A thread to discuss the highs and lows of chart hits that are acronyms. There are too many to list, so I’ve gone with a selection of some well known hits from the past few years, a couple which are older, and some which may not have charted in the UK but widely known.
For an incomplete list of other acronym hits, try the following links; https://www.songfacts.com/category/songs-with-initial-titles I also discovered a public Spotify playlist containing a selection of acronym song titles; https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0NlMPUuemEyPbZvi9KSmbU If there are songs you wish to be added to the poll, just say in this thread and I’m sure a chart moderator can consider adding them. |

ET, IDGAF and LDN stand out for me in that list.
BTW I'm kinda surprised you didn't add SOS by Abba considering it's one of their well known songs! (FTR, I would have voted for that too). |

Justice D.A.N.C.E would be my favourite from the website you linked - although not sure it is exactly an acronym.

I don't know about some of those, but I definitely wouldn't consider LDN (a lazy way of writing 'London') or LIFEGOESON (literally 'life goes on', spelt out) as acronyms
[even if they are both great songs! ] |

I’ve added the suggested Abba and Justice - as well as Avicii‘s which is my personal fave from the list now.

All these acronyms hurt my eyes!! But most are pretty good songs actually! My faves from that list would be LDN, WAP, SOS (Rihanna & ABBA), YMCA, E.T. and TKN. Take That also have a song called SOS from the Progress album that I believe was a single?

Justice D.A.N.C.E would be my favourite from the website you linked - although not sure it is exactly an acronym. I don't like that one so much any more since it was the song that meant no more Zanmatony in BJSC Still picked it in the list as a favourite along with RIP which was one of the best popstep tracks, WMCA which is cheesy but great fun and THE with its interesting sounding production that I liked. What about LFO by LFO, that isn't on the list. Discovered that song a while back while looking up official chart archive from the early 90s. We also have 'GTO' and 'FLM' from the 80s. Fun fact: what do the songs GTO and WAP have in common? They both use a vehicle sound effect in them. This post has been edited by Garden Snake: 22nd September 2020, 03:14 PM |

Thought of another pop blast from the 90s past - MFEO by Kavana!

They've missed off “S.M.D.U.” by Brock Landers.
It stood for Smack My Dick Up ( a mash-up of Blur’s “Song 2” and The Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up” ) they bottled it and changed it to the acronym at the last minute and so having failed to generate any commercial draw with its original name, nobody now knew what it was called. Anyway it charted at #49. |

'SOS' by ABBA, is the only case in UK Chart History, where both the Title and the Artist are Acronyms. They are also Palindromes - which are words that read the same both backwards and forwards... |
