The Official Top 40 biggest songs of 2020 so far

QUOTE
As we head into the final quarter of 2020, OfficialCharts.com can reveal that UK’s biggest song of the year so far is The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights.

The Canadian singer-songwriter’s mega hit leads the way on the year-to-date Official Singles Chart with 1.89 million chart sales, made up of 177,000 downloads and 211 million streams.

Blinding Lights spent eight weeks at Number 1 between February and April and features on his fourth studio album After Hours, which topped the Official Albums Chart in March.

At Number 2 is Tones & I's Dance Monkey which, despite first hitting the Official Chart last August, has continued to prove a powerhouse throughout 2020, logging 34 weeks inside the Top 40 since January. Its chart sales this year stand at 1.39 million, 2.5 million in total.

Dua Lipa’s hugely successful year is represented with three entries in the year-to-date Top 40 singles: Don’t Start Now at 4, Physical at 14, and Break My Heart at 37.

Other artists with multiple entries in the Top 40 are Lewis Capaldi with Before You Go (5), Someone You Loved (7), Bruises (23); and Harry Styles with summer hit Watermelon Sugar (12), Adore You (13), and Falling (36).

British DJ and producer Joel Corry cements his impressive run of form, landing two entries in the singles list with huge 2020 hits: Top 5 single Lonely is at 11, while seven-week Number 1 smash Head & Heart ft. MNEK is at 15.

Other chart-toppers from this year in the list are DaBaby’s Rockstar ft. Roddy Ricch (6), Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat) by 17-year-old New Zealand producer Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo (17), Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande’s Rain On Me (20), Drake’s Toosie Slide (22), and Eminem’s Godzilla ft. Juice Wrld (24).

Elsewhere, Zimbabwean-born British rapper S1mba places at 16 with his breakout hit Rover ft. DTG, a Top 5 hit in June. Megan Thee Stallion’s Savage – which peaked at Number 3 in May following a remix with Beyonce – is at 31, and British singer-songwriter Becky Hill bows at 40 with her Top 20 hit Better Off Without You ft. Shift K3y.

The Official Top 40 biggest albums of 2020 so far

QUOTE
Despite a healthy 30 albums reaching Number 1 this year, it’s Lewis Capaldi’s 2019 debut that continues to prove UK’s favourite album of 2020.

Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent recent topped 1 million chart sales in the UK, including 376,000 from this year. The album, which has logged 10 weeks at Number 1 – including four this year - has yet to exit the Top 10 since its release in May last year.

Meanwhile, Harry Styles’ second studio album Fine Line – released December 2019 - is currently the UK’s second-biggest album of the year, with 219,000 chart sales (289,000 in total). The record climbs two places up the year-to-date list since the last quarter, boosted by the success of Top 5 summer smash Watermelon Sugar.

The UK’s biggest album released this year is Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia (195k), in fourth place. Dua’s second album, which was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, logged four weeks at Number 1 across April and May.

The UK’s biggest debut album of 2020 so far is the current Official Albums Chart Number 1 - Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon by late US rapper Pop Smoke (120k), ranking 13th on the year-to-date chart.

Other big chart-topping albums released this year on the list include Lady Gaga’s Chromatica (14), Taylor Swift’s three-week leader Folklore (16), J Hus’ Big Conspiracy (17), The Weeknd’s After Hours (19), posthumous Juice Wrld album Legends Never Die (26), and BTS’ Map Of The Soul – 7 (32).

Several popular greatest hits albums also feature in the year-to-date rundown, led by Elton John’s Diamonds at Number 8, while Queen’s Greatest Hits (9) and Fleetwood Mac’s 50 Years – Don’t Stop (10) also feature in the Top 10.

Martin Talbot, chief executive, Official Charts Company said: "As we head into the final quarter of 2020, one thing that has kept music fans spirits up through this extraordinary period has been the continual turnover of new hits and great albums.

"To date this year, we have seen 45 new Number 1 singles and albums, including fantastic releases by the likes of Dua Lipa, Liam Gallagher, The 1975, Blossoms, among many others – all of them acting as a powerful antidote against the dispiriting mood of the times.”

I’m shocked to see that Everyday Life is nowhere to be found ohmy.gif

Does anyone know roughly how much Coldplay have managed to shift of their latest effort? I know that it debuted with 81,000 sales/stream equivalent sales at the back end of last year and wondered if it had reached platinum yet.

'Everyday Life' had sold 237k before it left the larger top 200 chart in April. With sales well below 1,000 a week I doubt it has now sold much more than 250k.

Thanks! Wow what a fall from grace - first album of theirs to not even go platinum let alone double platinum. Maybe if they’d pushed more singles from the album, but then again it wasn’t very commercial sounding idk what they could’ve released.

Well, yeah, but it's still one of the least popular number 1's of the year only ahead of Tootsie Slide and Godzilla. Considering it's two of the biggest names in the industry you'd expect it to be much bigger than it was.

Hardly! Number 1's these days are genuinely popular due to the introduction of streaming so we rarely get non-#1s like we used to when sales dominated. The fact it spent 9 weeks in the top 5 is more than enough and it's mainly just been overshadowed by an even bigger #1! I think it was very successful even for the two names involved, if you're talking weeks at #1 then yes, but as already mentioned we know the reason why for that.

Sales are "flat" these days - the number1, number 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 etc all sell roughly the same each week - and combined with tracks having very long chart runs it means that by the middle of the year nothing gets high in the top 40 of the year without having been around for most of the year. Plus ACR is only used to reduce sales for the weekly charts. For the YTD charts all tracks have full (SCR) sales counted.

Also commenting that "Rain on Me is a non-number one" thing - it was released in May and only two songs above it were released later (H&H, SL).

It really shows how low sales/downloads are now that "Times Like These" is 2nd and Jonas Brothers have snuck in with "What A Man Gotta Do".

What do you mean? YTD and YE charts are an indication of what's been popular on any given year, nothing more nothing less.
