Biography

Shawn Mendes once said the best advice he ever got about how to handle pre-show jitters came from his then-tourmate Taylor Swift. “Just remember,” Swift said. “Everyone’s here to have fun.” Fun? Yeah, sure. But they were also there to see Mendes perform, share his feelings, bare his soul. “When you’re writing something super-honest and about people you care about and things you’ve been through, the last thing you want to do is re-live upsetting experiences,” Mendes told Apple’s Music around the release of his 2018 self-titled album. “But that’s the music that travels and connects with people.” And therein lies the rub. Soulful but soft, wholesome without sounding like he’s hiding something, Mendes is the rare artist who has managed to find audiences in both the teen-pop and adult-contemporary set, blending singer-songwriter conventions with the lighter sides of R&B and dance music, bucking trends in part by ignoring them to begin with.

Born in the Toronto suburbs in August 1998 (a Leo—confident and optimistic), Mendes started out by uploading six-second covers of pop songs onto the video-sharing service Vine. Like Justin Bieber on YouTube before him, he navigated the leap from covers to original material, from making content to forging a career, modelling himself on the sound of artists, like John Mayer and Ed Sheeran—superstars whose charm lies, in part, in how un-super they seem. Within a couple of years, he released his first album, Handwritten. Success was huge and immediate. Illuminate arrived in 2016, followed by Shawn Mendes in 2018, marking transitions toward adult themes—anxiety, sexuality—without shedding the brightness or earnestness that made him appealing to begin with. “The hardest thing in the world is to wake up in the morning and be, like, ‘Today I’m me, regardless of how big of a song “Stitches” was,’” Mendes told Apple Music, referring to his 2015 breakthrough single. “The best way to do it is to ignore that and take your step forward in what you think sounds amazing. And that’s kind of all you can do.”

He has has applied his touch to over 200 records, including the work of Sam Smith, Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, Lana Del Rey, Disclosure, Wiley, Jamie XX, London Grammar, Underworld, Krystal Klear & Morgan Geist, as well as influencing flocks of other producers to drop their inhibitions and embrace bolder sounds. Woolford has recorded 5 Essential Mixes for BBC Radio 1, released 3 mix compilations including most recently FabricLive91: Special Request which was a Recommended release by Resident Advisor. As a DJ he tours relentlessly and held down a 9 year residency at Space on Sundays in Ibiza, as well as a 7 year hometown residency at Back To Basics in Leeds, in addition to playing pretty much every respected serious venue of note globally. Woolford sites a combination of the raw energy & diversity of the pirate radio airwaves, a lifetime of collecting records and the enlightenment of his art school days as key influences. - Spotify

Diplo
Thomas Wesley Pentz (born November 10, 1978), known professionally as Diplo, is an American DJ, songwriter, and record producer based in Los Angeles, California. He is the co-creator and lead member of the electronic dancehall music project Major Lazer, a member of the supergroup LSD with Sia and Labrinth, a member of electronic duo Jack Ü with producer and DJ Skrillex, and a member of Silk City with Mark Ronson. He founded and manages record company Mad Decent, as well as co-founding the non-profit organization Heaps Decent. Among other jobs, he has worked as an English teacher in Japan and a school teacher in Philadelphia. His 2013 EP, Revolution, debuted at number 68 on the US Billboard 200. The EP's title track was later featured in a commercial for Hyundai and is featured on the WWE 2K16 soundtrack.

During his rise to fame, Diplo worked with British musician M.I.A., an artist who is credited with giving him exposure in his early career. Later, he and fellow M.I.A. producer Switch created a Jamaican dancehall project and cartoon series titled Major Lazer. Since then, Diplo has worked on production and mixtape projects with many other pop artists, such as Gwen Stefani, Die Antwoord, Britney Spears, Madonna, Shakira, Beyoncé, Ellie Goulding, No Doubt, Justin Bieber, Usher, Snoop Dogg, Trippie Redd, Chris Brown, CL, G-Dragon, Bad Bunny, MØ and Poppy. His alias, short for Diplodocus, derives from his childhood fascination with dinosaurs.

Kareen Lomax
Atlanta-born Kareen Lomax’s forthcoming 7-track project, Hard Feelings, is an honest and uplifting soundtrack to her own little world that was inspired by her brush with fame and the belief that it was over. After living the rose-tinted life of a hotly tipped pop newcomer in 2016, gaining hundreds of thousands of listeners overnight thanks to a $50 Facebook ad for then single Melatonin, she lost sight of why she began making music to start with and returned to her hometown to be a dog groomer, picking up her life where she left it years before. Now, thanks to a chance discovery from Diplo in 2019, one of the world’s biggest producers, 2020 is set to be Kareen Lomax’s second coming.

Hard Feelings represents her life coming full circle, back to the place to where it all began and back to what she loves doing the most. Recording sessions in the city and a remote cabin in the mountains of Georgia ushered in Kareen’s new musical project, a shimmering, spell-binding R&B masterpiece set to be her best yet.

Biography

Cardi B’s come-up reads like a 2010s Cinderella story. In just a handful of years, the sharp-tongued New Yorker went from viral Instagram phenom to one of hip-hop’s most exciting voices, establishing herself as a bossed-up feminist icon along the way. Born Belcalis Almanzar in the South Bronx in 1992, Cardi got a job as a stripper at 19, quickly building a social media following—in addition to her devotees at the club—for her viral videos and hilarious catchphrases. In 2015, she scored a spot on VH1’s drama-filled reality show Love & Hip Hop: New York, where her brash personality turned her into an immediate fan favourite among her more established costars. That same over-the-top charisma made Cardi a natural fit for rap dominance; witty, unfiltered and totally fearless, her early tracks doubled as mantras for self-made women who put themselves first. But it was “Bodak Yellow” that launched Cardi into superstardom; a trap anthem that rang out from cars and clubs throughout 2017, it begging you to shout along. Her 2018 debut album, Invasion of Privacy, fused the Latin music of her childhood with hardcore New York hustlers' anthems, and squashed any doubts as to whether Cardi was here to stay. Meanwhile, her scene-stealing guest verses span the pop charts, from Bruno Mars (“Finesse [Remix]”) to Ozuna (“La Modelo”) to Maroon 5 (“Girls Like You”). Not bad for a self-proclaimed regular girl from The Bronx. - iTunes

Biography

Distinctively emotive, soul-inspired vocalist Sam Smith has been among the most commercially successful artists to arrive during the early 2010s. Prior to their breakthrough at the age of 21, the London-born singer and songwriter balanced their studies and music, sang in choirs and in bands, and performed in musical theater productions. They developed a passionate approach to singing exemplified by their favorite artists at that time: Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan. They were barely out of their teens when, in late 2012, they appeared as the featured vocalist on "Latch," the fourth single by production duo Disclosure. A loping mixture of U.K. garage and contemporary dance-pop, the song went to number 11 in the U.K. Over in the U.S., it took significantly longer to take hold, but eventually hit number seven there and was certified platinum three times over.

The singer's debut solo single, released in February 2013, took a more tempered path. Produced by the favor-returning Disclosure, "Lay Me Down" recalled the stripped-back material that had proved successful for Adele. Only three months later, producer/songwriter Shahid "Naughty Boy" Khan followed his Emeli Sandé-fronted U.K. Top Ten hit "Wonder" with "La La La," featuring a powerful lead vocal from Smith (who had just finished a series of dates in support of Sandé). It was an instant number one U.K. hit. In October 2013, Smith issued the Nirvana EP, which included an acoustic reading of "Latch," and by the end of February 2014 they were back at the top of the U.K. chart with "Money on My Mind," which inventively married their relaxed vocal with a frenetic beat. Smith's debut full-length, In the Lonely Hour, was released that May in the U.K., and topped the album chart. It arrived in the U.S. the following month and peaked at number two there. The singles "Stay with Me," "I'm Not the Only One," and "Lay Me Down" hit the Top Ten in both the U.K. and U.S. In the Lonely Hour led to awards from organizations as varied as the BRITs, the Grammys, Billboard, and BET. It was the second best-selling album of 2014 in the U.K. and U.S., behind only titles by Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift.

In 2015, Smith recorded another Disclosure collaboration, "Omen," eventually placed on the duo's Caracal. Smith also earned the honor of being chosen to record the theme for a James Bond film. "Writing's on the Wall," recorded for the Spectre soundtrack, was the first Bond theme to go to number one in the U.K. An expanded version of In the Lonely Hour, the "Drowning Shadows Edition," was released that November with new material and previously released stray tracks added to the original album content. Following Golden Globe and Academy Award wins for "Writing's on the Wall," Smith spent most of 2016 and early 2017 in the studio recording their follow-up album with previous collaborators Jimmy Napes and Steve Fitzmaurice. "Too Good at Goodbyes," the lead single from their second album, was issued in September 2017. The ballad went to number one in the U.K. and the Top Five in the U.S. just prior to the release of The Thrill of It All the following month. In 2018, they released the single "Fire on Fire" as part of the soundtrack to the BBC and Netflix animated miniseries Watership Down, based on the 1972 Richard Adams novel. The year 2019 saw the release of a pair of Smith singles: the Normani collaboration "Dancing with a Stranger" and the solo cut "How Do You Sleep?"
