I don't feel that she's criticizing sex workers: the point of that tweet was that she wasn't casting trans actors in the typical roles you might expect, i.e. sex workers (who will be quickly victimized). Maybe people are no longer as aware of that trope these days?

Points on the rest though. Although on the flip it is refreshing to see a celeb actually replying without a PR dictating it to them.

I don't believe autistic characters have to be played by autistic actors as a general rule, but I think it depends on the character and the storyline. Sometimes, for sure, more authenticity can be added to the role by an autistic actor. However, as long as the approach is sensitive, well-researched and accurate, I'm happy for a neurotypical actor to play an autistic character. Many autistic actors would be able to play neurotypical characters too - as long as it's something that can work both ways, I've got no qualms.

This is the key caveat, I think here. The actors don't always need to be from the group they're representing, but this seems to be a film that deals with autism in a major way. If successful, it could really influence how people think of autism. And so any undertaking like this needs to be done sensitively and appropriately to ensure it doesn't leave people with a false impression of what living with autism is like.

It doesn't seem like Sia was the right person to make that movie.

(aside: yes, good that she isn't casting trans people in stereotypical roles, but phrasing it that way she's also disparaging sex workers as lesser. Though that's probably an unintentional slip so I won't assume she's sex-worker-exclusionary from just that alone)

Another day another pointless 'scandal'.
These tweets cannot be defined as 'disgusting'. Rude and tone-deaf, definitely. Also, where the f*** did you read her 'bashing sex workers'?! :/

The tone of this first post is very Crazy Chris if I'm being honest and that's NOT a compliment.
Honestly this. While I do see how the tweets can come across as crass and rude, there’s such a delicate line between going over the top and stereotyping, or being too scared to go the extra mile and it comes off as weak and devoid of effort. Idk I get that her heart was in the right place but is it bad to say that I kinda saw the backlash coming? And it’s sad, because it’s starting to send the message that not only are non-neurotypical actors limited but non-neurotypical characters are as well. It seems like absolutely NO ONE is taking this situation well.

Also regarding the other tweet, good on her for at least noticing the stereotype and making an effort to subvert it.

While I agree with the statement that an actor with Autism should be the person chosen to act as the person with Autism, I also feel a great actor should be able to act like they have Autism, even if they don't and portray it perfectly.
I would say the same for a gay actor portraying a gay person in a movie or TV show.
An actor by definition is acting, therefor a good actor should be able to act as anyone but I would never agree to a white actor being cast as a black person and vice versa (but that's a whole different kettle of fish.)

As for Sia's responses, they are pathetic. The way she's handled this is very eh.

Not to get my #controversial reputation back but, I legit don't see what's wrong with the first tweet either?

Like, it's a shady response obviously, but... maybe that person ISN'T a good actor, or wasn't the right actor for the part.

I mean if someone said that to me I would be pissed off of course, but I don't think its discriminatory, just a rude remark probably posted in anger and (maybe) with a kernel of truth to it.

I've not got jobs before, for example, and tbh, if I pressed the employer on why in a rude way, they probably would be perfectly entitled to turn round and say "look you just weren't right for it". It's not like Sia is saying 'you arent a good actor BECAUSE OF YOUR AUTISM', or 'you arent a good actor AND NO PERSON WITH AUTISM COULD EVER BE A GOOD ACTOR'. To my reading, anyway.

The problem with the first tweet was that she didn't read the room. People were trying to educate her on why her decision to cast Maddie has been controversial, and instead of taking time to read the replies and respond accordingly, she took a cheap shot. It showed a complete lack of care for the concerns of the autistic community.

Her tweets were all kind and respectful but it's clear that she was getting more angry tweet by tweet. And you can't blame her when the film that she has put the last 5 years of her life into is being ripped apart by people (based on a 1 minute teaser, might I add).
the 'bad actor' tweet is just unfortunate tbh, she didn't help her case AT ALL

the problem is people think she said it because they're autistic. they love jumping onto hate trains for no absolute reason!

I guess that's one reading.

I would say she responded genuinely rather than crowdsourcing an answer that wasn't truly from her & was calculated.

Do all celebrities have a responsibility to be always 'on' abd community guardians for every single demohraphic? I guess your take just depends on how you answer that question.

I would say no. And I think to an extent to do that is to treat a community with kid gloves, which isn't perhaps ideal either. Essentially that take says that you can't ever clap back to any autistic person, which I also don't think is the solution.

But that's just my take & I'm not looking to argue that it's The take.

I don't see it as treating the autistic community with kid gloves, but there's a time and place for "clapbacks." This really wasn't the one in my opinion. Sia's chosen to represent a community in her film, but she's not done it delicately or accurately from the little we know so far. Naturally, it's upset some autistic people and they have the right to express their concerns. If Sia really cared to make this film, the least she could do is listen to those she's chosen to represent. Her response basically says "I don't care for your opinion." It's a slap in the face, and being "genuine" doesn't excuse that in my view.

We can’t say she hasn’t represented the community delicately or accurately until the film has been seen. She should probably have been more delicate in response to those tweets but the claims in my first sentence are uncalled for until Maddie’s performance has been seen.

Exactly - people cannot judge the entire movie based on a 1 minute teaser

That's the biggest issue I'm having with this. Twitter mob is claiming a teaser/trailer is "part of the movie" which it is but those are just the tiniest excerpts. Watch the whole thing and then judge. If there is room for criticism then I will absolutely get on board. I think that's the biggest problem Sia is having with this backlash hence the anger. And if the same thing happened after the release then it would be a completely different story.

Also isn't the scale extremely large overall? There are so many people out there and Sia decided to include that one character. Also has she EVER claimed she'll be representing the entire autistic community with this movie?! If you include an LGBTQ+ individual in a movie you don't suddenly claim you are representing everyone.

Everyone is just assuming and extrapolating 1 individual onto entire community / 1 minute video onto a feature length film. Both parties are coming off terribly and I honestly would rather stay on the sidelines.

It's a difficult conversation... was she in the wrong for not casting an autistic actor? Perhaps. Were are tweets helpful to her cause? Not at all.

At the end of the day, it's a movie to sell and it needs names to sell. Is Kate Hudson a big enough name or does the help of Maddie's name bring in more audience?
