There are numerous stories this week week about the UK and race — main one being that the government-led Race and Ethnic Disparities Commission found that the UK should be seen as an international exemplar of racial equality, and that institutional racism doesn’t exist.

Why does the UK have such a blindspot when it comes to race? This is not just the government — there is always fervent anger and flat-out denial whenever racism in the UK is brought up. Just look at how people reacted specifically to the accusations by Meghan about the skin colour of her child. Why?

Saying institutional racism doesn't exist is an ideological necessity for the UK government, if they accepted that it exists as they should then every incarnation of the Tory Party would be found to be institutionally racist, as would lots of large companies.

More broadly in society I see it as people who are naturally racist comparing the UK to most other countries, using the idea that the UK is comparatively good on racism to downplay those who are still experiencing it. As if it's not something to continually work at getting better on.

These 'UK not Racist' headlines that are being peddled are dangerous because it's just cherry-picking. The report clearly states there IS still overt discrimination and people suffer from this every day, people may like to claim they're not, but that doesn't stop them from being it. I mean, yeah we're not quite as bad as the US and some other areas of Europe, but this in no way makes us a 'role model'.

But all these sodding reports just seem to be a massive pat on the back for the establishment, making me gag.

You have to live in an entirely different reality to think that the UK was not structurally discriminatory. From the very very very top of Government right down the UK is a discriminatory shitshow. To deny that the UK has a problem with race is just to bury it in the sand and hope when the ticking time bomb goes off they’ll be far away and insulated from the resulting backlash and calls for change.

You just have to listen to minority ethnic Brits to hear the stories they all have of discrimination to know just how deeeeeep it actually goes in our society

There clearly are issues with racism in the UK. This is just the government trying to pat their backs and say good job down without really doing anything. It seems clear to me that racism was at least partly a motivator for all those who voted leave in 2016 and since then previously closeted racists have seen the result as a reason to become actively racist. Hate crimes have certainly been on the rise.

As for whether it’s institutional, it’s not a great look to have the prime minister we currently have who has made the remarks he has previously made.

I agree completely. The paper itself is actually fairly critical but what turns my stomach a little bit is the press have been briefed with the narrative before the reports publication, so it does almost seem as if the Government are trying to sweep everything under the carpet.

There are definitely problems in the UK, I'm not sure institutional is the right word, but there are definitely problems. Societal factors plays a huge part, certainly in the UK I think there is a real lack of spread of different minorities. I don't think it helps matters. I kind of feel the report highlights that I have read does kind of miss the point a little bit, but I do feel sometimes with these things unless you get the popular answer there's always going to be massive discontent.

David Lammy dealt with that caller very well and with the kind of respect and politeness towards her that she probably didn't deserve... ugh, as for the report - I'm afraid this was grimly predictable, those apointed to lead it were deliberately chosen to ensure that the conclusions were the ones that the government wanted, although I think they've overreached with that 'model to the rest of the world' garbage. It's just another load of complete and total bollocks from this government designed to piss me off.. yeah, I'm afraid they are now brazenly trolling, bullying and gaslighting those well meaning members of the public who just want to see equality and fairness for all. A total missed opportunity to have a serious public debate and look in detail at these important issues, hijacked as political fodder to shore up their culture war and score some good election results in May. : (

Several of the academics listed as having been consulted for the report or as having done some research for the report have said that it didn't happen. As the report was commissioned by someone who was once sacked for making up a quote, this shouldn't come as a surprise.

I actually feel sick. I can’t believe the government we have and I can’t see when we’re ever going to shake them off.

Not to mention that you’re reducing the value of an intelligent Woman’s contribution to an important topic of which she has first hand experience to her looks. Gie yer heid a wobble

This completely. It’s what she’s saying that’s important. It doesn’t really matter what she looks like.

He might not have been referring to her looks when he typed that, although the word 'stunner' when applied to people usually refers to looks.
