Was Something New a flop or just an underperforming single? I’m going to say the latter as it did get to #2, but it obviously had a terrible chart run and was expected to do much better as it was a comeback single.

What do you guys think?

I would maybe say an underperformance, but I suppose after 3 and a half years away from the chart, it's kind of difficult to gauge how well it should have done. The music industry moves fast, and I think that left Girls Aloud in a weird position of having been away long enough for a lot of the public to have moved on from them (out of sight, out of mind...), but it had also not been anywhere near a long enough break for nostalgia to have kicked in.

Undeniably #2 is a great peak, but it did indeed plummet down the chart. As comebacks go it did a whole lot better than Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) did for the Spice Girls, we can at least say that. kink.gif

Something New has held up fairly well for them on Spotify - it's constantly within their most popular Top 10 - so I think despite how frontloaded it was in 2012, it's gone on to be a reasonably well remembered song by them.

It wasnt a flop but it didnt do aswell as expected but thankfully it has continued to get trickle a sales and has built of fairly ok sales. I wish it had been bigger though as I love it.

You sum up my thoughts perfectly here. Looking back, I actually think it's quite impressive it managed to debut at #2 when the rest of the chart run suggested it was a very fan-favouring release. It had the charity tag to help it but it was completely different to the usual Children in Need sound. It was also so unlike everything else in the charts; I know Girls Aloud singles were often quite unconventional pop songs but I think there's a difference when the public are used to having Girls Aloud in their conscious and then three years down the line which is a long time in the pop world yet not long enough to have nostalgic value, as you say.

Imagine if they did return with 'Beautiful 'Cause You Loved Me' omg. Would make 'Headlines' look like a Platinum hit.

Beautiful Cause You Loved Me would have made for an awful comeback single.
Something New underperformed and lost ground quickly after a strong debut.
It is successful in the streaming era for Girls Aloud which I greatly welcome as I have great love for the song.

I wouldn't ever call a #2 single a flop, but it had definitely a disappointing chart run and deserved more. Did it underperform? Maybe for their standards, at the same time we must not forget the music industry had changed a lot during the time they were away (not just the music style that was 'hot', but also the way music was consumed). When they did come back, they were more a legacy act than a current chart-topping act. And frankly only released the song and album to support their tour the next year. So it was always going to be a different scenario. It is good to see it's now one of their most streamed and popular songs on Spotify and doesn't seem to be forgotten, so looking back it did quite well after all. Also compared to the already mentioned Headlines, but also MKS's Flatline or All Saints' Rock Steady comeback single.

Yes when its pitted against comeback singles from other girl groups it looks like a huge hit, but its great that its one their most streamed and popular songs on Spotify as that will continue to help increase its sales.

I'd agree it's quite well-remembered as far as Girls Aloud songs go, I've heard it played twice during the daytime on Radio 1 recently and I'd often hear it on nights out (pre-pandemic!)

It was quite late in their career so it was harder for them to do amazingly but it got to #2 which is great and it is such a bop wub.gif

It would have been amazing if it did better but it didn't do too badly so I'd say underperforming single.

Yes. It flopped. Their previous lead single, The Promise, was their most successful hit, so expectations for their "comback" single were very high.

I suppose it flopped a bit, should have stayed in the chart for a while longer

I loved it at the time but it really hasn't aged well in my opinion, especially the production and chanted vocals in the verses.

I’ve never really liked this song, for me it’s one of their worst.

On topic though I felt it did under perform a little, though the landscape had changed over their hiatus.

I quite like Something New honestly but I didn't even know they had a comeback at the time laugh.gif and eventually I listened to the song a couple years after it was released kink.gif

That was four years previously, that is a lifetime in pop music to be away.
