Hope the mods don't mind me posting this! Given that it's my 5-year anniversary this contest I thought I'd go through the archives documenting Niceland's journey throughout the years, but mainly to the songs I gave my top points to.

Here's what I'm going to do:
- I'll go through my time in 10-contest groups (88-97, 98-107...). For each set, I have taken my +18, +15 and +13 from each contest and ranked the 30 resulting songs. To give a little bit of inter-year competition, the top 3 from each 10-contest group will go through to a 'big final' where I will reveal my favourite BJSC entry of all time!
- I'm well aware that a lot of my favourite songs didn't actually get a medal position so I'll stick an 'honourable mentions' section before my ranking, so if you've never gotten a medal position from me you could still appear here!
- And of course I'll be looking back over my own entries and reliving my successes and (mostly) failures.

Hope you enjoy this!

BJSC 88-97

Niceland's Entries

BJSC 88: MÖWE & Daniel Nitt - Lovers Friends DNQ - 26th in Semi - 28 points
BJSC 89: Royce Lovett - I Wanna Love You DNQ - 33rd in Semi - 4 points
BJSC 90: AJR - I'm Not Famous DNQ - 29th in Semi - 18 points
BJSC 91: Captain Cuts ft. Nateur - Love Like We Used To 11th - 219 points
BJSC 92: NINA - Beyond Memory 16th - 188 points
BJSC 93: OHEY ft. Emily Jean - Remember DNQ - 30th in Semi - 23 points
BJSC 94: Project Jenny Project Jan - Train Track DNQ - 26th in Semi - 21 points
BJSC 95: Torul - Monday DNQ - 22nd in Semi - 41 points
BJSC 96: ARIA - Astrolove 24th - 153 points
BJSC 97: The Isles - Eve of the Battle DNQ - 30th in Semi - 5 points

Our first year in the contest was... well, let's say very grey. Obviously starting out I had no idea what songs would do well, so I went with a song I liked in the hope others would as well. Some people did at least, but sadly not enough to get near the qualifying positions. I followed that up with another song I liked very much in the form of Royce Lovett, and... the fact this only got 4 points still baffles me. It's not that bland! I tried again on the catchy-factor for the final contest of 2016 with future stars AJR and I'm Not Famous, which despite getting a couple of Q preditions was once again a DNQ.

My luck turned for the better at the start of 2017, where I [s]stole Cameron's entry[/i] entered Captain Cuts, with a song which I very much enjoyed at the time but I can't say I love so much now. Anyhow it got my first qualifier, and I followed that up with a chosen-from-potential song in NINA, a song I still like very much now (and she actually managed a win with a different song not too long ago!) After posting potentials did so well for me that time round, I did it again for the next contest... resulting in dead-last in the semi for the obscure OHEY. I then went back to just sending songs I liked, which also didn't do too well with a low score for Jenny and Jan (who sound strangely like men).

My next entry, Torul, has been described as one of my most unlucky DNQs by a couple of people, however it still DNQd, leading to me selling myself out with ARIA and her French cheesy-pop track. I was on holiday for the next contest so just entered a song I enjoyed - the result, again, a single-digit result. Not last though somehow!

BJSC 88-97

Honourable Mentions

Feed Me - What It Feels Like (ft. Nina Nesbitt) (Cadelicia - 88 - +7)
Nina Nesbitt really excels on dance features, and this was one of those brilliant ones where it works so well. Combined with the rather bizarre music video, this song really clicked with me both during the contest and afterwards.

Foreign Air - Echo (Florina - 88 - +5)
When I thought about doing this I genuinely thought this had been my +15, it sticks in my mind a lot more than a lot of the songs above it in my debut contest and definitely deserved more than 5 points! One of the few indie songs in my first set of points and I enjoy it very much, especially the instrumental drop in the chorus!

Indaqo - Boom Boom Boom (Land of DW - 88 - DNQ (+12))
My first ever semi-final +12 was sadly a DNQ, but did better than people expected if I remember correctly! It really is one of the best European dance tunes of its time and like the above had a great drop.

Cobi - Don't You Cry For Me (Mulgracia - 89 - +11)
One of my first steps away from my dance stronghold! This was an incredibly moving track, a brilliant chorus but the music video really does add so much more to it as well. This ended up appearing in my EOY despite not getting the points it deserved in this contest.

Skylife - Why (ft. Summer Rayne) (Ajanaeda - 90 - +12)
Another song which ended up in my EOY, a fantastic tropical dance song which really caught me both during and after the contest. I really should visit it more!

Somewhere Anywhere - A Short Love Story (ft. Claude Eman) (Palmyra - 91 - +12)
Well this is quite the bizarre dance anthem wink.gif I really can't do the dance/opera mashup justice without playing you it so go and listen if you haven't!

CoCo and the Butterfields - Battlegrounds (Greenfroze - 92 - +8)
This is single-handedly the best song to never get my +18, and the best artist I've ever discovered solely from this contest. A bit odd at first, I very quickly learnt to love this song by this quirky band and it grew on me significantly after the contest and ended up being a Top 5 in my Personal Chart and a song I was absolutely obsessed with for a few months, and whilst their initial follow-up songs didn't grab me as much as this, their music from 2020 and 2021 has grown back on me and pushed them back into my Top 5 artists of all time. A massive thank you, Freeze!

Ryder - Nirvana (Hushkanukia - 93 - +12)
Another dance tune! Different to the others but I still love it, reminds me of a holiday I had in the remote parts in the Lake District after adding this track to my playlist.

BGRZ - Agolo (ft Angélique Kidjo) (Cor Lupus - 95 - +9)
As a family we do country nights, and coincidentially Angélique Kidjo was my choice for an artist for Benin! This is a remix of one of her classic tracks, and it is done so well, bringing a classic African piece into the Western dance world in a fantastic way.

Billy Lockett - Old Man (Aelandor - 97 - +12)
I've become quite the fan of Billy Lockett over the last few years, but ironically it took me a long time to compute that this was the same artist who performed the BJSC track Old Man! That's partially down to the fact he deleted this from his Youtube account in order to follow a new 'style' - which I still like, but this doesn't detract from it at all, in fact it's still one of his best songs! Really gives me nostalgia back to the mid-00s.

BJSC 88-97

Medallist Ranking

30/30: Hayley Orrantia - Strong, Sweet & Southern
(BJSC 89 - Oslol - +13)

Fair to say, this is one of the songs which I pointed in my early contests, where I threw points at anything which sounded catchy on first listen, which explains how this ended up getting points, and unfortunately I have to say now it makes me cringe a little bit! Apparently Hayley is singing about how she likes her men ‘like she likes her tea, strong, sweet and Southern’. I’m presuming the South in her country is different to the South in the UK, in that she’s not wanting a man who speaks the Queen’s English and is happy to pay £5 for a cup of coffee. The music video adds to the strangeness, showing how ‘tough’ her gang of ladies are as opposed to random men. Why I pointed this I’m not quite sure!

29/30: KREAM - Taped Up Heart (ft. Clara Mae)
(BJSC 91 - New Lexico - +15)

Beyond Miss Orrantia, all the rest of the songs in this ranking are actually ones I’d be pretty happy still listening to! Next up is KREAM (I’ll avoid making a reference to that Buzzjack thread) One of the songs I have to say I’d completely forgotten before I went through the songs, granted this has grown on me a little bit but it’s still nothing I’d write home about. Whilst the tune is catchy enough, it is ruined a tad by the fact that the lady singing decides to swear in the chorus. Keep it clean, love!

28/30: Troll - Jimmy Dean
(BJSC 92 - Hendinia - +13)

This one is difficult because I remember really loving this when it came out, but when I listened to it going through this I didn’t feel the same enjoyment as I did originally. Listening to it again now I’m actually quite enjoying it again! Either way it is cheesiness at its peak, and I can’t say I’m surprised that it did as well as it did! I also remember it being compared to the far-inferior ‘Dub-i-Dub’ the contest later, which won. Ironically I’m not entirely sure who Jimmy Dean actually is – based on my ignorance of films I assume he’s some sort of actor.

27/30: Brooke Fraser - Kings & Queens
(BJSC 94 - Unovia - +15)

The first song I have no recollection of voting for whatsoever, like Jimmy Dean I didn’t think too much of it when going through initially but it’s also sounding quite nice now! Although I guess I should expect them all to sound quite nice given that I gave all of them lot of points. Brooke Fraser is one of those unfortunate people who has a surname as a first name and a first name as a surname, and even more unfortunate that her surname is a man’s first name so she can’t just swap them around. The song is nice though, with a good distinction between the verse and chorus.

26/30: Isabell Otrebus - Voiceless
(BJSC 93 - Unovia - +18)

Aaand we finish off this section with my fifth female-vocalled track in a row, sorry ladies. It’s also the second Unovia song in a row and the first +18! And also sounds quite nice giving it a listen too, in fact I’m pretty sure it made my Personal Top 10. Isabell Otrebus entered this into the Polish Eurovision Selection, coming from the lovely Polish city of… erm, Sweden. It’s a nice ballad but I think the dance influences of 2017 are probably both what gave it my top points back then and why I’m marking it down a bit now.

I'm interested to see how many songs from the first set you recognise as I think quite a lot of them made their way into my Picks of the Week videos back in the day magic.gif Glad you liked Cobi though, I think MOWE were at their peak when I sent them but AJR were still relatively new, sadly it didn't make a difference sad.gif Thanks Jack!

(I'll be resuming the countdown on Monday, hopefully at a slightly quicker pace as I'll make it my ambition to not spend two years on this thread tongue.gif)

I'm planning to do something similar to this for my 100th (if I can remember to) next year so I'm glad to see someone else doing something to commemorate their entries and contest favourites and I'll try to follow along, also to partly see if we do have the odd crossover favourite x I know I've enjoyed a fair few Niceland entries over the years despite the low points given total.

I'm still a big fan of Jimmy Dean myself, it's complete trash but in a very unique, 80s way compared to other trashy entries.

BJSC 88-97

Medallist Ranking

25/30: Lauren Alaina - Road Less Traveled
(BJSC 90 - Harmonica - +13)

I definitely had a 'country period' which coincided with the early years of Niceland in BJSC, which explains why this made my Top 3. Whilst it really is a song I've not been back to at all beyond a couple of months after the contest, I still recognise it quite well and enjoy it now, taking the idea of trying something different with your life to a twangy guitar backing.

24/30: BB Diamond - Praying
(BJSC 88 - New Lexico - +18)

Ah I'm in two minds about this one. Back in 2016 I didn't have Spotify so my memory of songs was basically the 10-15 seconds of them I would put in my videos. It just happens that this song has about 10 seconds of brilliance in the chorus, which definitely pulled the rest of the song up for me. Don't get me wrong, the rest of the songs is of course good! It's just potentially not 18-points good. BB Diamond doesn't seem to have released anything other than this on her Youtube channel, which is a shame as I'd be interested in hearing more from her.

23/30: Fjokra - Sick Kids
(BJSC 96 - Alteria - +13)

This sticks out like a sore thumb from absolutely everything else I pointed in my first 10 appearances in this conontest. Clearly it was a foresight of where my musical tastes were going to take me. This one is still pretty nice-sounding, but some of the lyrics are a tad... not nice, something I clearly didn't pay too much attention to back in the day!

22/30: ARIA - Maze
(BJSC 90 - Ultraviolenceland - +15)

BJSC really seems to have a thing with artists called ARIA for some reason (if my memory serves me correctly there's been at least 3?) This artist couldn't be any further away from the bunny-eared Franch lady I sent though, with much more mature instrumentation and a fabulous Paloma Faith-esque voice. I still really like this and it's growing on me again, although as with BB Diamond this is the most recent thing on her Youtube channel sad.gif

21/30: Theia - Roam
(BJSC 88 - FSR Rontvia - +13)

Everywhere she roams is home. Although why that means she has to lay in a bath of milk I'm not entirely sure! This one is more subdued and listening to it now it isn't grabbing me as much as Maze did, but clearly I thought different when I listened to them to make this ranking. I'm sure it's a grower, although sadly her rap-influenced newer music really isn't my thing!

I think yes, Jimmy Dean does have something different to it, it must have done for me to give it so many points laugh.gif I am quite enjoying it again now, I think how much I like it changes depending on the context I listen to it in. BJSC 88-97

Medallist Ranking

20/30: UNKLE - Looking For The Rain (ft. Mark Lanegan & ESKA)
(BJSC 96 - Fljotavik - +15)

I remember guessing UNKLE as an answer for a BJSC back in the day and Jade asking what on earth that was. Hopefully you're all better educated now magic.gif They've appeared in various on-site contests since this appeared but I think this is the highest I've ever pointed them, and it was definitely partially down to my like for UNKLE rather than the song itself, but clearly lots of other people like it as well as (if I remember correctly?) it also did very well overall. It's a very dark-sounding track and certainly worth listening all the way through to.

19/30: Le Grind - Bricks
(BJSC 97 - New Lexico - +13)

We're not even into the top half and already everything left is a massive tune! This is an incredible disco-influenced dancce track that I had almost forgotten but really gets me dancing. The vlog-inspired music video is a stroke of genius as well. Sadly Le Grind are another act to fall under the BJSC curse and vanish off the face of the Earth after their entry!

18/30: Tal - Are We Awake
(BJSC 88 - Unovia - +15)

Tal has had some tunes over her existence, my favourite remaining Slow Down the Flow which was a Top 5 in my chart, but this is the song which introduces me to her initially. A mix between English and French, the track starts off quite ballad-y but morphs into a really punchy pop track. What are all those rusty cars doing in the forest though?

17/30: Perttu - Waves (ft. Alexandra)
(BJSC 89 - Greenfroze - +15)

Back to a song I haven't been back to at all since BJSC but is a fantastic example of 2016 dance at its peak. There really isn't too much else I can say about this but it really does hold its ground amongst some of the better-remembered tracks.

16/30: The Beach - Bite My Tongue
(BJSC 93 - TARO Bellamia - +13)

The Beach is one of those artists whose name begins with 'The' but are not a band, confusing everyone. I did realy love this though, at this time it wasn't my style but the almost-mellow pop track grew on me throughout the contest and ended up in the Top 10 of my personal chart. Also - he looks a lot younger than I remember him being!

Obligatory YAY for 'Road Less Traveled' biggrin.gif It's so anthemic that I'm not surprised it's aged as well as it has, such a timeless feel to it.

Always nice to rediscover entries from several years ago, giving 'Are We Awake' a listen as we speak and 'Nirvana', 'Don't You Cry For Me' and 'Jimmy Dean' were big faves of mine.

BJSC 88-97

Medallist Ranking

15/30: Norda & Mike De Ville - Gypsy (Catch Me If You Can) (ft. Joanna Jones)
(BJSC 97 - Quintessa - +15)

Oh we do love a brillant dance track, particularly one where I'd completely forgotten how good it sounded. Despite the incredibly low-budget music video, the song was and remains fantastic. There are very few songs I've heard like it!

14/30: Pale Waves - There's A Honey
(BJSC 95 - #00274E - +15)

Imagine someone trying to send Pale Waves to BJSC nowadays - there'd be a national outcry! But back when this came out they were basically completely unknown, and this track quickly became one of my favourites. I believe they had some influence from The 1975 in their early album and that really shows in this track, incredibly pop-py and catchy. I'm surprised to find out that their most popular song on Youtube is actually 'Television Romance' - a weird choice given that it's basically an identical twin of this track!

13/30: FRENSHIP - 1000 Nights
(BJSC 90 - Florina - +18)

I'd actually discovered this one before it was sent to BJSC, and having only remembered the chorus, had gone off it a bit in between the contest and starting this up. FRENSHIP were one of those acts who had a couple of really good songs and then completely went off my radar, but thankfully this is one of the good ones and remains so!

12/30: MisterWives - Machine
(BJSC 95 - Medhelnia - +18)

Other than this song I was never really able to get into MisterWives (in fact the only other song I can think of by them is that 'we built aroOUUNDHOUUSE' one), but this song is really good, taking the topic of individuality into a really fab indie-pop song with a gripping music video as well. Really reminds me of my first year in college!

11/30: Studio Killers - Jenny
(BJSC 93 - Kluminican Republic - +15)

Another song I knew before it was entered to BJSC, which partially makes me feel a bit weird ranking it with all these other BJSC-only discoveries. But then again, I never paid it too much attention until it was entered here, it was just 'one of those songs in everyones chart', so I'm glad it was entered as it made me appreciate it in its fullness. I do really still like it though, even if Studio Killers remain largely mysterious!

BJSC 88-97

Medallist Ranking

10/30: Gaia - New Dawns
(BJSC 92 - Sandebörg - +18)

We really are into the big hitters now. I have to say I've paid no attention to Gaia's future work (apparently she released a collaboration with Sean Paul last month ohmy.gif ) but this is one of the best power ballads I've heard in a long time and it still hits just as hard now as it did 5 years ago. A beautiful song that was well worth my +18 (conveniently ignoring the fact there's still another song from the same contest yet to come)

9/30: Lucas & Steve - Up Till Dawn (On The Move)
(BJSC 96 - South Danaelanda - +18)

Oh we do love a fun tropical dance piece with a wacky music video. The main thing that I remember about this was accidentally deleting it from my Personal Chart and Dan complaining that it wasn't there laugh.gif Needless to say it re-entered the week after. I haven't gone back to it much since the contest but it continues to sound as fresh as it ever did!

8/30: Oh Wonder - Ultralife
(BJSC 94 - D'yermak'er - +13)

After its appearance in BJSC, this became a hit in my Personal Chart for Oh Wonder, and then I completely lost them until late 2019 when Hallelujah came out and now I'm a massive fan again, which has probably aided the position of this song in the rankings. It's such a happy feel-good song that you can't help but smile along to!

7/30: Britt Nicole - Through Your Eyes
(BJSC 97 - Avalonia - +18)

We love it when a Christian song slips through the cracks and makes it into a Final *.* I wonder if Grant even knew it was a Christian song when he sent it? Another song I knew well before its appearance in the contest but it certainly deserves some more recognition now, a great pop piece that I'll happily listen to all day long.

hooray for Lucas & Steve holding up well here, shame that us two were seemingly the only big fans of the song here as it limped in at the bottom end of the final!

if you've not heard their debut album, you may like, it is very Avicii inspired.

BJSC 88-97

Medallist Ranking

6/30: SMILO - Young Again
(BJSC 89 - Sandebörg - +18)

Another artist whose Youtube channel seems to only contain this song, but what a song it is! One of the best dance-y pop songs going, I adored this when it came out and still really love it now, everything about it is fantastic. It also means that Sandebörg manage two medallists in my Top 10!

5/30: Gareth Emery & Standerwick - Saving Light (ft. HALIENE)
(BJSC 92 - South Danaelanda - +15)

South Danaelanda (or Danaeviia as they're called nowadays join Sandebörg as a country to manage two songs in the Top 10. Whilst this is definitely one of those instances where the music video very much eclipses the song (I wonder whether it would have won without it?), it still is a solid track with some great vocals. But of course the music video makes it what it is, touching on something so emotional and I'm sure most people on here can relate to at least some part of it.

4/30: Tall Heights - Spirit Cold
(BJSC 91 - Harmonica - +13)

This song has always been really underrated in my head, it isn't 'punchy' and doesn't have something that 'grabs' me as most of the songs in this Top 10 do, but I would definitely rather listen to this than the songs below it any day. It's just a really good song, and even when they don't hit you initially really good songs do just continue to sound good as the years go on.
