3rd October 2021
It's 3 weeks on top for Don't Shut Me Down, and 5 in total for ABBA, their longest run with new material since The Day Before You Came had 6 weeks on top in 1982. Billy Idol gets his highest chart slot since 1984's chart-topping Eyes Without A Face, not leaving a Bitter Taste at all, and Tori Amos gets a first-ever top 5, 20-odd years late. Great Van Fleet rocket into the top 10, Heat Above and there's more Heat Waves with a 40 place leap from Glass Animals to 16. Sneaker Pimps get a 2nd top 10 23 years on from 6 Underground hitting the top spot. Dermot Kennedy gets his first top 20, and Duran Duran are well over 20 top 20's on their 40th Anniversary. Blossoms have a 30-place climb for a 7th top 40, and Stereophonics a 10th. Highest new entry is from Agnes, at 32 Here Comes The Night unrelated to previous songs of the same name (eg The Beach Boys), for a 6th chart entry in 12 years, including 2 huge chart-toppers in Release me and I Trance in 2009 and 2019. Another Agnes, Obel, gets a 5th chart entry in 9 years with Fuel To Fire. Mariah Carey's Fantasy is to feature in a great RomCom fantasy movie - and she bounces back now at 50 I've seen Free Guy, a great fun movie with Ryan Reynolds. Sufjan Stevens joins Angelo De Augustine for his 4th chart foray, 15 years since Chicago went top 10, and 4 years since Mystery Of Love topped my chart. Back To Oz following in the traditions of previous Oz-titled or themed records from Scissor Sisters and many others. Ding dong! Also new in, Purple Disco Machine return with a bit of Dopamine, BURNS boogie in with dance track Talamanca, Tom Grennan follows-up, and Ewan McVicar revamps Rufus' 1974 chart debut for Rufus, Tell Me Something Good, a Stevie Wonder song gifted to Chaka Khan and friends, and US smash but not a UK hit, annoyingly. I charted it though, as by the time I was 16 I was getting very annoyed at the numbers of non-US-hits when UK dross littered up part of the UK charts. Can't say that these days as both US and UK charts are littered up with the same dross. 1 1 1 5 DON’T SHUT ME DOWN - ABBA 740000 2 2 1 5 I STILL HAVE FAITH IN YOU - ABBA 685000 3 4 3 6 BITTER TASTE - Billy Idol 257300 4 7 4 6 A NIGHTINGALE SANG IN BERKELY SQUARE - Tori Amos 184900 5 3 3 8 DIRT - Keane 445400 6 6 4 6 ON THE WRONG SIDE - Lindsey Buckingham 299000 7 39 7 2 HEAT ABOVE - Greta Van Fleet 67100 8 9 8 6 GOODBYE - LP 184200 9 14 9 5 ALIBIS - Sneaker Pimps 104600 10 10 10 6 SUNSHINE - Liam Payne 159450 11 8 8 6 I DON’T MIND - Lindsey Buckingham 171150 12 5 3 11 WAVES OF BLUE - Majid Jordan 566700 13 15 13 19 DON’T LET THE SUN CATCH YOU CRYING - Gerry & The Pacemakers 262350 14 18 14 2 MY UNIVERSE - Coldplay x BTS 51000 15 12 12 8 IF SOMETHING’S GONNA KILL ME (IT MIGHT AS WELL BE LOVE) - The Stranglers 173900 16 56 16 4 HEAT WAVES - Glass Animals 45600 17 11 7 8 COLD HEART (PNAU REMIX) - Elton John & Dua Lipa 309000 18 13 1 19 YOU - Regard, Troye Sivan & Tate McRae 1201000 19 40 19 4 BETTER DAYS - Dermot Kennedy 55600 20 58 20 2 ANNIVERSARY - Duran Duran 30200 21 25 21 7 YOU & I - Navos & HARLEE 84900 22 24 22 4 LOVE UNDER PRESSURE - James Blunt 55100 23 17 9 8 PSYCHO - Maisie Peters 212050 24 16 5 8 YOU CAN CALL ME - Texas 325250 25 19 13 8 HOPE - Sigma & Carla Marie 175950 26 20 4 11 MOVE WITH ME - Mad Circuit 319700 27 23 10 11 KISS MY (UH-OH) - Anne-Marie & Little Mix 233700 28 28 22 8 FLY AWAY - Tones And I 126100 29 32 29 4 DUM DUM DIDDLE - Abba 66550 30 60 30 3 CARE FOR - Blossoms 32000 31 22 8 12 I AM WHAT I AM (COPENHAGEN 2021 WORLDPRIDE ANTHEM) - Aqua 258650 32 NEW 32 1 HERE COMES THE NIGHT - Agnes 17800 33 26 1 20 LEAVE BEFORE YOU LOVE ME - Marshmello x Jonas Brothers 1321850 34 38 34 6 FLASHBACK (COLLRBONE REMIX) - Javiera Mena featuring Collrbone 70300 35 35 35 3 ONE MORE TIME - Rod Stewart 52500 36 27 18 11 BELIEVE - Anna Of The North 171850 37 53 37 4 HANGING ON YOUR HINGES - Stereophonics 43850 38 29 29 7 WILD HEARTS - Keith Urban 85200 39 48 39 3 SEASIDE - Diane Warren, Rita Ora, Sofia Reyes & Reik 35800 40 30 30 9 DON’T GO YET - Camila Cabello 130750 41 21 14 9 TAKE MY BREATH - The Weeknd 188250 42 31 31 7 LOVE LIKE THAT - Lola Lennox 98050 43 47 43 4 AS GOOD AS NEW - Abba 47850 44 63 44 3 ON MY WAY - Natalie Imbruglia 25250 45 36 36 5 ETERNAL LOVE - JLS 62450 46 50 46 6 DO THE TELEVISION - Jake Shears 51350 47 42 1 13 IT MUST BE LOVE - Labi Siffre 645050 48 79 48 2 SPIRIT POWER AND SOUL - Johnny Marr 16500 49 49 49 6 MY HEART GOES (LA DI DA) - Becky Hill & Topic 58600 50 RE 50 6 FANTASY - Mariah Carey 43600 51 33 23 7 TAKE ME FOR A RIDE - Steps 110450 52 37 2 15 MORE THAN A WOMAN (SG’S PARADISE EDIT) - Bee Gees x SG Lewis 907800 53 34 34 9 GOOD 4 U - Olivia Rodrigo 121500 54 NEW 54 1 BACK TO OZ - Sufjan Stevens & Angelo De Augustine 11000 55 44 44 7 DRIVE - Clean Bandit & Topic featuring Wes Nelson 66350 56 66 56 3 IF IT’S LOVE - Sting 21800 57 54 1 19 GYPSIES, TRAMPS AND THIEVES - Cher 726600 58 77 58 2 JUSTIFIED - Kacey Musgraves 14800 59 51 1 21 GOD ONLY KNOWS - For KING & COUNTRY & Dolly Parton 928200 60 65 60 6 HONKY TONK WOMEN - The Rolling Stones 42200 61 43 6 14 FOLLOWING THE SUN - SUPER-HI and Neeka 378550 62 64 62 8 OUT OUT - Joel Corry x Jax Jones featuring Charli XCX & Saweetie 52400 63 41 26 9 SKATE - Bruno Mars & Anderson .Paak & Silk Sonic 147500 64 68 64 4 BROKEN LAND - The Adventures 25100 65 52 10 13 CALL ON ME - RAYE 250650 66 72 66 4 RISK IT ALL - Ella Henderson, House Gospel Choir & Just Kiddin’ 22600 67 45 10 11 RED BUTTON - AJA 178800 68 74 68 3 WHO - Donny Osmond 16800 69 55 3 18 TOO MUCH HISTORY - Jack Savoretti 750550 70 46 46 6 ONE NIGHT - Griff 48300 71 67 1 21 SARA - Fleetwood Mac 635600 72 75 72 5 MISTY BLUE - Dorothy Moore 24200 73 NEW 73 1 DOPAMINE - Purple Disco Machine featuring Eyelar 5400 74 78 74 4 SHE’S A RAINBOW - The Rolling Stones 18000 75 80 75 2 THAT’S WHAT I WANT - Lil Nas X 9000 76 NEW 76 1 TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD - Ewan McVicar featuring Rufus & Chaka Khan 4800 77 62 18 12 CHASING KITES - Georgie 182050 78 NEW 78 1 TALAMANCA - BURNS 4400 79 NEW 79 1 DON’T BREAK THE HEART - Tom Grennan 4200 80 NEW 80 1 FUEL TO FIRE - Agnes Obel 4000 57 38 7 PRESSURE MACHINE - The Killers 80750 59 39 6 SECRET LIFE - Jack Savoretti 63950 61 50 5 WHILE YOU’RE STILL YOUNG - Sophie Ellis-Bextor & The Feeling 46100 69 69 5 MAGICAL - Laura Mvula 27600 70 39 7 SAY WHAT YOU MEAN - Raleigh Ritchie 69050 71 61 6 THE SECRET HE HAD MISSED - Manic Street Preachers featuring Julia Cumming 39100 73 15 11 WAIT AROUND - Kyle Falconer 177950 76 50 5 FLYING ON THE GROUND - Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds 41600 |

I was very meh on this at first but honestly it's good and the video really improved it so much! Kiss My Uh Oh slightly descending but it's all good. 11 weeks is a great run for this. Tell Me Something Good is one of my favourite songs right now. I really slept on this in BJSC but I'm wow into it now. Good chart! |

Hi there! Nice to see ABBA in the top 2, the big gains for "Heat Waves", "Better Days", "ANNIVERSARY", "Care For", "If It's Love" and "Justified", the debuts for "Tell Me Something Good", "Talamanca", "Don't Break The Heart" and especially my #1 "Dopamine" and the return for "Fantasy"! Great chart! Thanks Sergej! I just tried to comment on your charts but they were closed off, oops! So I'll just do one here Ive not heard the Oh Wonder and Years & Years tracks, so those are must-hear's, shame Billy Idol & Duran are dropping, top 10's for me now Dopamine is growing on me fast, so great to see it on top still - I was trying to think what it reminded me of, and it reminds of the whooping whoooOOooooOOOoooo hook off Crown Heights Affair You Gave Me Love from 1980 Drive & Elton top 10 Coldplay up, Glass Animals back, Blossoms and Ewan McVicar new in, and that concludes the highlights! good stuff! |

Thanks as always for the huge supporting! 5 weeks in the official chart for a group who's average age is 70-odd is still amazing, and download sales are still holding up well for both tracks. Go back to 1974, when they debuted and the thought of a band of 70-somethings charting with new material would be the equivalent of Al Jolson getting a substantial hit - cos there WERE no bands from 1927. Especially given charts in those days gave equal weighting to all sales from all age ranges, it wasn't skewed towards teenagers who didn't buy records at all So it's a pretty unique achievement! I think only Frank Sinatra has had a new top 10 after a longer span from debut to new track - and that was only cos it was tagged onto a U2 hit as a technical double A with Bono duetting, and it was also an old song anyway! (Elton and Macca don't count as they tagged along on younger artists hits) Blossoms can indeed go higher Mariah came close to topping my chart with Fantasy and Dream Lover, both fab, and did top my chart with that Christmas song. In 1994! No waiting 20-odd years for me! |

Hi Sven! Thanks for the picks! Re Chaka Khan, I've not been able to get a definitive answer from googling, some seem to say it's a sample, some a cover, but it sounds like a distorted speeded-up version of the original Rufus track so I've gone with that for now until it's announced it is or isn't another singer entirely |

I will never not love and support Abba My Universe is so catchy hook-wise, and they grabbed a US number one thanks to BTS (I suspect) Kiss My has suprisingly long legs for a catchy pop ditty, it certainly stands out from the crowded pop ditty field, I think. Tell Me Something Good I liked right off in BJSC but I didn't buy it as it was quite a radical version of a song I really rate - but it's grown on me even more so I bought it in the end anyway, I might as well have bought it weeks earlier |
