I thought it was called the Sea as it was recorded a lot on Brighton by the sea and she walked by the reason while writing and recording it.

I think after coming up for a year now on reflection I prefer The Sea to Melanie C. Whilst I think Who I am trumps anything on The Sea after Who I Am, Blame it on me and In and out of love I give the rest of Melanie C a miss these days. I definitely get more out of a listen to The Sea.

I agree Sammy. I prefer The Sea as well. I feel there's a little more substance on The Sea than Melanie C. Think About It, Drown, Burn, Weak and Enemy are some of my favorite Mel C songs.

One of my favourite songs of that summer I never quite enjoyed this to be honest, mainly because of the screetching in the chorus and some cringe lyrics But I do admit that it is the type of song that really comes alive when it is done live. Like Headlines and Mama, they are elevated in the live setting. (yes this is me warming up to it 10 years later ) |

I loathe TAI. Too screamy. Same for Burn, love the song, hate the vocals. The vocal journey she started with Version Of Me helped Melanie find a healthier way of singing. The Sea has some great moment, like the titletrack, Drown, Weak, One by One.. the rest is ok. She improved a lot vocally. To me Melanie C and VOM are way more interesting records because of the vocals.

I don’t like it but I recon it’s a fan fave. Think About It gives me headaches, not fond of those high pitched belting notes Burn had potential, but it screams headache as well The other songs are not that good. I’m so glad VOM was so different and she fully embraced a more interesting type of pop in MC. 1. Northern Star 2. Melanie C 3. Version Of Me 4. Beautiful Intentions 5. The rest This post has been edited by dancinqueen: 5th September 2022, 10:05 AM |

The rest I never got the love for The Sea either. It has interesting songs but the production value is a bit bad, the lyric content sometimes are too cringe and she does sound too pichy for my liking... My ranking would be: 1. Northern Star 2. Melanie C 3. Beautiful Intentions (bad production, great songs!) 4. Version of Me (too many bad songs though the production value is ok actually!) 5. the rest |

The Sea is the true follow-up to Northern Star. Almost every track on the album is a killer: the mesmerising & majestic title track, the epic Enemy, the beautiful Weak, the dramatic Get Out of Here, the sinister Stupid Games, the heartfelt One By One (which should have been a duet and released as a single!), the pop gems Burn & Think About It - and my absolute favourite Drown.

Stupid Games, Cruel Intentions (b-side), and Drown > Think About It One By One is not bad, but nothing new. I think it would have worked as a duet though. With James from Starsailors or whatever that band name is The problem of The Sea is that nothing is a surprise, everything sounds like a bland version of things someone else had done already - and I still get that patchwork effect that personally bothers me. At least, Northern Star was cohesive in terms of production. To me, Melanie C is her best along Northern Star, hands down. I hope her new album will be at least among her top3. |

11 years!
There was a lot I appreciated from albums 2-4, but I agree that it's The Sea as a body of work that felt like the proper successor to Northern Star. It'll always be a shame that it missed the UK Top 40. I'll always consider Think About It to be one of her very best singles. Clearly she's belting a lot but for me it isn't unpleasant, for me it adds a feeling of urgency to the track. Bop! |

'Burn' is a killer, it still baffles me why that wasn't singled over certain weak(er) tracks.

I love this album, imo it's her best indie release.
