It just makes total sense. Whilst the group was active, the solo records were also taken care of properly. After that, when the group closed shop due to them neglecting it to focus on lesser projects, the label lost interest. They were literally not interested in the group in favour of their solo projects, and their egos ultimately f***ed them up lol
Had they given that record proper focus, things would have been much different, I think. Mel C and Emma definitely would have stayed with Virgin, and probably Mel B too (and her campaign would have been given better focus, I think). In reality, Emma and Victoria managed to do expensive first albums in 2001 as those had been agreed and put in motion whilst the group was still active. Once their numbers were less than stellar (despite one #1), the label ignored them too. The odd one out would be Mel C, but we all know how that went after Forever was done and dusted too... |

It's taken me 3 years to feel motivated enough to do this lmao, but finally there's a post for the miscellaneous singles - England United, Artists for Children's Promise, Justice Collective and Artists for Grenfell - http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s...t&p=5795678
I'm also in the process of updating all the sales on the first page with the update from a few weeks ago. I've completed Spice Girls (group) posts so far. |

A few more sales!
![]() 301,026 - Holler/Let Love Lead the Way ( ![]() Some of these singles have sales that are split in the database, I'm not sure why that is - maybe because of different stage names? - 57,245 - Free Me 55,602 [8th May] + 1,643 [5th June] 88,848 - Maybe 77,379 [8th May] + 11,469 [5th June] 40,672 - I'll Be There 39,564 [8th May] and 1,108 [5th June] ^ I guess the larger figures remain static for Emma, whereas the smaller figures are what is added to every week. So we should be safe to assume that those overall totals are the actual totals as of 5th June. 79,930 - Word Up 2,903 [8th May] + 77,027 [5th June] ^ It's probably the case that the larger figure is static too, but it was the smaller figure that I was provided with last month. Not sure what it would have sold in the past 4 weeks. Judging by On the Horizon (see below) it could be as little as 20 sales. Soooo close to getting to 80,000. 42,006 - Here it Comes Again 39,941 [8th May] + 2,065 [5th June] 24,052 - On The Horizon 22,050 + 2,002 [Both 5th June] ^ I received a smaller figure on 8th May which was 1,974 - meaning that it's sold 28 copies in 4 weeks! An average of 7 sales per week, lol. 8,327 - Melt/Yeh Yeh Yeh (Both 8th May & 5th June - seemingly this figure remains static) 986 - Melt (5th June. It had sold 973 as of 8th May, so that's 13 more sales in 4 weeks) 934 and 27 - Yeh Yeh Yeh (5th June for '934' figure. It had sold 921 as of 8th May, so that's 13 more sales in 4 weeks) ^ Not sure why there's separate sales for Yeh Yeh Yeh! I've also no idea which separate figure out of Melt or Yeh Yeh Yeh is meant to be attached to the Double A Side. Perhaps it's best to keep them all separate. If you add them all up, it's 10,274. I queried these album sales because of the issues with the singles, but I've been reassured that these were the only sales showing in the database: 142,643 - Free Me [8th May] (931 sales since 21st June 2009) 102,550 - Reason [8th May] (661 sales since 21st June 2009) Still quite shocked that the sales increases are this poor, even with the inclusion of streaming these days. Particularly Reason, when you consider that Beautiful Intentions grew by 1,454 in the same period of time, and This Time by 1,432. All I can think is that by 2009 'Reason' CDs were no longer available and hardly anyone thinks to download it? Perhaps it's more feasible that her Red Girl era albums were attracting some sales when she released The Sea, for instance, assuming that they were still on her web store at that point. More: 402,407 - He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother 5,641 - High Heels 4,441 - Who I Am 91 - Around the World ![]() Unfortunately It's Only Rock N Roll couldn't be found in the database! I think that covers everything! ![]() ![]() |

Thank you Jay! Im so glad to see that Maybe has continued to sell ok at least. Not amazing, but at least it's a nice bump compared to the rest of the solo material.
I really wished she would have more of a streaming presence to be honest. I guess having 4 albums with three different labels makes it all a bit hard to manage... But the Free Me era is criminally neglected online. For instance, there is a case to put Maybe on her own channel. The fan upload has 2million hits -more than most solo tracks on there! It's a bit sad all these numbers, hey... Their solo careers never really took off in sustainable ways. Mel C has managed to continue because she is whilling to spend her own money on it and loose it. Good on her. But it really makes the case that if she wasnt a multi-millionaire, she really wouldnt be able to continue making music... High Heels was, by most metrics, another flop. Glad she didnt take it as a sign to quit lol I do hope things to turn around for them now that there seems to be more of an acceptance of Spice Girls across the world. Maybe that will give some further attention to their solo efforts too. |

Thank you so much for the update and once again it's so detailed. Much appreciated.
I wondered - is the 301k figure for the double A Side and not including the stand alone 17k sales for LLLTW? Thanks |

Great for Holler and Maybe the rest is pretty awful reading.
Holler will I guess go gold at some point it is just a shame any LLLTW downloads or streams wont help it. 318k looks nicer and is closer to gold than 301k. |

Some of these singles have sales that are split in the database, I'm not sure why that is - maybe because of different stage names? - That's a good observation - Emma did drop her surname on the releases during the Free Me era and of course Melanie B has gone under "Mel B", "Melanie Brown" and "Melanie G". Not surprised at the sluggish solo sales. I imagine that limited availability has completely stopped Reason dead in its tracks to gain more sales over the years - I doubt Mel C's former record labels gives a hoot about trying to keep it stocked in stores and I imagine that she's a very physical-heavy artist. Her Red Girl stuff are of course at least kept stocked online at her own online stores and anyone who is interested in listening to more Melanie C has easy access to it. |

I think I've figured out why the Melt / Yeh Yeh Yeh release is looking wonky - could it be that the seperate releases for Melt and Yeh Yeh Yeh in Europe is screwing things up somehow and the 27 figure might be from import sales of the Yeh Yeh Yeh EU single? https://www.discogs.com/Melanie-C-Yeh-Yeh-Yeh/master/87762 ETA: Yeh Yeh Yeh also has a seperate release on iTunes with just Yeh Yeh Yeh and Yeh Yeh Yeh (Shanghai Surprise Remix) - I think this might make up the 27 sales number. Yeah I think Free Me era being under 'Emma' only on iTunes and other platforms doesnt help it. Plus, it's a mess. Apart from Crickets, none of the singles are available on any platform on their own. I wonder why only Crickets ah (maybe to get the money back it lost lol). Also, Mel C's Reason was on iTunes for like £12 for years - never seen it below £10 anyway. So I imagine that didnt help either... Plus, it is not necessarily an album full of songs that she often revisits on her promotions... |

I think it might have to do with the iTunes store becoming available in the UK literally a few weeks after Crickets was released, so it might've just been added by them on the UK launch. |

Those Mel C sales for High Heels and Who I Am give you an idea just how much of a massive money pit her solo career is. When you consider the expense of videos, remixes, studio time, promo etc to sell so little must mean they make massive losses.
You can sort of understand why her videos up to this era have been so low budget. |

Do tell us once more how BMG must be THRILLED with Emma's sales. ![]() 6,691 - Baby Please Don't Stop 2,159 - You're All I Need to Get By 1,113 - Too Many Teardrops 620 - Coming Home for Christmas 155 - Santa Baby At least Melanie has her gigs, festivals, corporate events, DJ sets, etc. which make up for the costs of recording & releasing. |
