Yes great musically, extremely atmospheric tune, I like the way it switches between the sweeping slow synths and the faster bits

But like Re-Rewind, Lola's Theme, Call On Me and Yeah Yeah/Put Your Hands Up For Detroit it was one of those songs of the 2000s that would start a new dance trend for the next year or so, so was also a very important track in the history of dance music.

So Solid Crew - 21 Seconds

Date 12th Aug 2001
4 Weeks
Official Chart Run 1-3-2-6-8-16-21-29-32-38-40-43-63-x(2)-64-69-x (15 weeks)

Taking the official and dance #1 next are the largest collective we'll be seeing in this thread, So Solid Crew - which throughout its lifetime had as many as 30(!) members. A similarly large rap/dance collective would have two #1s in 2010 so we may well see them appear in a future thread.

The song's verses would be performed by (in order of appearance) Megaman, Asher D, Mac, Lisa Maffia, Face, Scat-D, Harvey and Romeo; with the chorus being sang by Kaish followed by the bridge "21 seconds, t - t - t" from G-Man. Former dance #1 artists Oxide & Neutrino are also listed as members of So Solid Crew but they do not appear in this song. The theme is based around the amount of time each MC has to deliver their rap, which is approximately 21 seconds.

It would enter at #1 selling nearly 120,000 copies - kicking Atomic Kitten off in the process, and would also be the third 2-step garage song to top the UK charts following 'Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty)' and 'Do You Really Like It?'. In total it would sell 350,000 which at the time was enough for it to be at #19 in the end-of-year charts, making it one of the most successful garage songs of all time. It's not hard to see why too, it's a very catchy song and despite the minimalistic production it clearly made a big impact on UK listeners. Its success was limited to just this country though. It would make the top 40 in Ireland as well but nowhere else.

The Crew would have four more top 20 hits and we would see solo hits for some of the group's members, most notably Lisa Maffia and Romeo who both went into the top 3 with solo efforts.

QUOTE(TheSnake @ Aug 25 2016, 10:15 AM) *
Perhaps the fact it is dream trance is why it has such enigmatic lyrics about 'building castles in the sky'. When I hear the song, I am reminded of altocumulus castellanus (Doctor Blind will know about this cloud type).

Altocumulus Castellanus (of which there was a lot in the sky yesterday across eastern England) is indeed named in Latin after its turreted castle-like structure, and it is what I always thought the song was about as the cloud is often described (and indeed was named) after looking like castles in the sky.

So Solid Crew performed this at my high school about a week before it was released. It was a pretty big deal, there were huge cars with blacked out windows arriving and high security...! Oxide and Neutrino had performed the year before, just before No Good 4 Me was released, it's fair to say our music teachers had their ear to the ground (and apparently a keen interest in UK rap laugh.gif)

I never loved it but it's incredibly catchy.

That reminds of the time that the head of RE used Billie Piper in one of his assemblies to get our attention (I'd never heard of her).

The RE teacher more in touch with modern pop music than me! laugh.gif

The production of 21 Seconds is a bit minimalistic for my taste. There were better grime tunes in the 2000s imo. with better production like Hype Hype by SLK and Pow (Forward) by Lethal Bizzle.

Having said that it is a very catchy song and will probably be in my head for the rest of the day. The video is amazing too.

My RE teacher (also my form tutor) was a DJ by night. Maybe it's something in the water.

We used to spend those weeks just before school holidays when there were no lessons talking about dance music laugh.gif

Castles In The Sky was one of the few big hits of 2001 not to peak in its first week (What Would You Do by City High being the other main one). It is also one of the few songs that would quite likely not have been such a big hit if it had been released 2 months later than it actually was...

Interestingly, the CD cover on Wikipedia lists it as 'featuring Marsha', who I have never seen credited anywhere before.

A quick search reveals that the name Ian Van Dahl came from a Flemish song about a kid named Jan van Daal.

Why's that? I'm sure it would have done fine in September too! The charts were still very receptive to trance, as seen by N-Trance's seminal trance reworking of Set You Free hitting #4 that month.

The Supermen Lovers (feat. Mani Hoffman) - Starlight

Date 12th Aug 2001
4 Weeks
Official Chart Run 2-3-7-12-15-19-24-27-35-42-46-56-62-69-x(3)-75-70-x (16 weeks)

The Supermen Lovers (Guillaume Atlan) is a French house musician, named after the song 'Superman Lover' by Johnny "Guitar" Watson. No, it's not a group. His debut single 'Starlight' would be a hit across Europe, reaching a worldwide peak of #2 in both France and the UK. So who cruelly denied this of the #1 position it deserved? It was none other than Bob The Builder with his pointless reworking of 'Mambo No. 5'. :|

The following week DJ Otzi entered the chart at #1 with 'Hey Baby', which deserves a little mention in this thread as it is a little bit dancey even though it was decided it wasn't quite what this thread was looking for. If eligible, it would have spent 7 weeks at #1 here.

'Starlight' would be the only hit for Atlan but he would go on to release four studio albums and a number of EPs, the most recent of which was released just a few months ago. Singer Mani Hoffman would go on to have another UK top 40 hit as singer of Jealousy with "Lucy" before too disappearing from the charts. The song would also be treated to an animated video with potato people (linked above) directed by the Frenchman Numero 6 (David Nicolas) who would go on to direct a prize-winning video for Super Furry Animals ("It's Not The End of the World").

The song is an example of French house, a genre pioneered by Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk, and taken to #1 last year by Modjo. It takes influences from funky house and disco, which are both noticeable in the production of the song. In the end-of-year chart it would be in the top 40 having sold 260,500 copies.

I heard this at the time but thought it was a Jamiroquai song because the vocals are similar to him.

Didn't really like Jamiroquai at the time, as he was over played on the radio/TV shows at the time.

But now I like it particularly the way Mani Hoffman sings at the end 'And Starlight...' at 3.27 in the video

It is French house, similar in style to Daft Punk, particularly Get Lucky. The singer even sounds a bit like Pharrell in it.

Still however not one of my favourite funky house songs, it is not at the level of Salsoul Nugget for me or some of the tunes around 2004 to 2006.

I actually prefer Lucy by Jealousy...but Starlight is catchy. I was never majorly into house at the time to be honest, and it's a shame this blocks the Rob Searle remix of Set You Free from featuring in this thread (I believe it was #4 on the second week of Starlight's run).

I don't consider the big room boom in 2014 much like that Norman Bass track myself, nowhere near enough "wub" wub.gif it was heavy yes but still quite "watered down" heavy, with the exception of Animals, Wizard & Tsunami (and not that awful Tinie version ta)

Something like Swedish House Mafia - Greyhound does have the 'wub' though. That is a very early 2000s style song I think.

the weather's really hot, I'd quite like to drink a smoothie right now. unsure.gif

Feel free to speculate on what will be coming up next in this thread over the weekend, just know that I'm out at Reading Festival so the next entry in this won't be coming until Monday.

'Castles In The Sky' is fab. I have always been pretty wowed by its chart run also! 7 weeks top 10 and then 6 weeks left in the top 40 after that. ohmy.gif

'Starlight' is a pretty catchy song. The most standout thing about it is of course that video. Much like the animated video for 'Reet Petite' outshines the song for me too.

Castles In The Sky is very good and is still a pleasant listen. My favorite Annemie-sung Ian Van Dahl track is Try.

The Superman Lovers' follow up to Starlight, Hard Stuff, is worth a listen and its video is definitely worth a watch.

Castles In The Sky is one of my faves from this year, was a huge club hit everywhere in Europe. At that time I heard it a lot on the Hungarian Dance radio stations.
Ian Van Dahl had later also some great great tunes but I guess they weren't as high on the charts to be included in this rundown.

Honorary Mention

DJ Ötzi - Hey Baby

Chart run: 94-77-70-55-41-47-45-1-2-3-2-3-3-3-6-9-10-11-18-23-24-13-14-18-33-43-58-54-54-58 (30 weeks) + 2 weeks from 09/03/2002 69-88

We were going to include this in the countdown, but decided against it, so this deserves an honorary mention in the form of a mini-post.

DJ Ötzi is an Austrian entertainer, real name Gerhard 'Gerry' Friedle. He was briefly homeless when he was younger, before working as a student cook, and then was discovered at a karaoke competition where he went on to become a DJ, entertainer and singer in discotheques in Austria, Majorca and Turkey. He was named after Ötzi the Iceman, the name given to the mummified remains of a 5,300 year old man found in the Austrian Alps

As well as suffering the setback of early homelessness, Friedle also endured another setback in the form of testicular cancer, which he beat.

Hey Baby is a cover of Bruce Channel's 1962 song of the same name. It was originally released in 2000 in many mainland European countries before being released in the UK in August 2001 where it made number 1 upon release. The song was, and still is, a frequently played song at children's disco's, from which I keenly remember the song.

On the back of the success of Hey Baby, a world cup version was released in 2002, reaching number 10 in the UK charts. The original version of Hey Baby is guitar led funky house with dance beats and a trance influenced beat after the chorus.
