Really? I've never seen them as a Steps-like act and in Germany they were a dance act.

At the time, there was definitely a discrepancy of what Paffendorf actually was (a producer-driven dance act) and how it was being promoted (a Steps-like showcase with two girls and two guys )

From the NOW 52 booklet:

Formed in Germany in 1998, Paffendorf are twin brothers Patrick & Alex (who, incindentally, are both trained dentists!) and vocalists Tanja and Camilla

The same happened with other dance acts at the time like Alice Deejay (I remember Judy saying on an interview that the group was her and the two dancers that accompanied, and that the three of them were all DJs) and Ian Van Dahl (with Annemie being quoted as stating that Ian Van Dahl was her DJ pseudonym).

Imagine someone at the time thinking Paffendorf were like Steps when they were being hyped and then listening to Be Cool laugh.gif

It reminds me of in the mid 00s when I thought the Shapeshifters were a Steps like group designed to get people who were overweight to lose weight through exercise (hence the name The Shapeshifters and the lyrics 'I'm a different person' in Lolas Theme). Weird theory, I know laugh.gif

Speaking of later trance influenced songs, what about Afterglow by Wilkinson and Becky Hill, I know it is drum and bass but I think that is quite trance influenced with the build ups in the synths.

Elvis VS JXL ‎- A Little Less Conversation

Date 16th Jun 2002
4 Weeks
Official Chart Run 1-1-1-1-3-6-11-21-30-32-45-60-x(3)-98-100-x (14 weeks)

Date 01st May 2005
1 Week
Official Chart Run 3-36-48-74-93-93-x- (6 weeks)

Dutch big beat producer Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie XL, occasionally shorted to JXL to avoid offense, helped ‘The King’ Elvis Presley retake the record for most UK #1’s (18) in the summer 2002. ‘A Little Less Conversation’ was originally composed for Presley’s’ 28th film ‘Live A Little, Love A Little’ in 1968, and returned into public consciousness after featuring in the 2001 blockbuster ‘Ocean’s Eleven’.

Prior to this monster Junkie XL had only managed to chart once with trance flavoured 'Zerotonine' reaching #63 in July 2000. With an ‘ELV1S: 30 No. 1 Hits’ compilation scheduled for the fall, Junkie XL became the first artist to receive authorization to remix an Elvis track by his estate. The remix was extensively used in a £10 million Nike 2002 World Cup advertising campaign. Thus when activated in mid-June ‘A Little Less Conversation’ stormed to #1 on stellar sales of 243,301 and went on to spend a month at the summit. ‘A Little Less Conversation’ returns as dance chart #1 for a week, 3 years later, in May 2005 courtesy of the 70th Birthday re-issues of Elvis Pressley’s UK #1’s reaching #3.

Unfortunately the success of the Elvis remix didn’t herald an upturn in Junkie XL’s solo chart fortunes. A Tiësto collaboration 'Obsession' peaked at #56 in November 2002, before a final chart appearance with 'Catch Up To My Step' featuring Solomon Burke #63 in June 2003.

Ah the first of our real retro revival tracks. There was also a remix by Paul Oakenfold of Elvis, is this still eligible?

Obviously this had massive crossover appeal like a certain remix of a Leo Sayer track later in our thread.

Its really good I think if dance tracks can have crossover appeal to older people like this one, this is rare as dance seems to have a mostly younger fan group and the last big crossover one this decade was probably Rather Be.

Yes I did like this one and know it well at the time as it wasn't hard dance music so I did appreciate it back then. Wouldn't be my favourite as it has been overplayed as a TV soundbed and on adverts like the one that iirc follows it as dance number 1 in 2005 used to be (but isnt as much any more).

I'm DYING for a commercial trance comeback, surely all it takes is for someone like Bieber to release a trance-leaning single to lead his next album and the floodgates will reopen.

As far as I can recall the last big trance influenced hit in the UK was I'm Not Alone by Calvin Harris, I definitely don't agree with Wiki that the Example song was trance.

Porter Robinson and Mat Zo's Easy is probably one of the most trance influenced tracks to make the top 40 this decade.

I know it didn't make the top 40, but in terms of this year I do think Kygo ft Kodaline - Raging is quite trancey too in the buildup.

David Guetta also came close to trance with Just One Last Time, again like I'm Not Alone, there is probably too much of a drop on this one.

I would also say that the Alesso remix of One Republic's If I Lose Myself is quite trance influenced, even if it isn't trance.

Yeah, this one was inescapable - even in early 2003 you could put a music channel on and expect to see the video of this at some point in the day. Have to embarrassingly admit I had a bit of a crush on one of the women in the video when I was 13 blush.gif Think it was the Spanish dancer...

Also major LOL at this being the dance #1 again in 2005 tongue.gif And that was even after downloads had been added! Combination of extremely low sales and the state of the charts at the time I think, like how half the big hits in 1992 seemed to be re-releases. No idea it got as high as #3 on the re-release, that really does seem ridiculous.

Cant think of a drum & bass song with trance influences tbh. Although I can think of a song that brings together trance and breakbeat.

From 2002, made #16 on the charts.

Anyway, the genre has been dead in the UK charts since 2004 imo.

Everyone says 2005 was a bad year for the charts because of sales, but at least in 2005, the charts are fast unlike today.

I remember the Pump Up The Jam and Insomnia remixes/ rereleases in 2005. I knew Insomnia was a rerelease (I had heard it before) but I had never heard Pump Up The Jam before. I just thought it was a song for exercise routines when I heard it (the lyrics about pumping up). In early 2006, You Got The Love (Candi Staton/ The Source) was re-released for some reason too and reached number 7.

In 2008 there was loads of re-released dance songs from the 90s and early 00s (Rhythm Is A Dancer, Toca's Miracle, Something Good)

charts were fast in 2005 cos sales were very low, that's it, things needed to be changed, who wants a chart based on low sales when you sell 100 copies to 3 fans and go top 10... thankfully downloads were added for good

I'm just thinking that Tinchy Stryder's You're Not Alone in 2009 is quite trancepop influenced if you listen to the music (because of how the Olive sample is used and the rest of the background music).

Would the end of Dizzee Rascal - Holiday be trance?

Maybe Time by Chase and Status ft Delilah with the synths buildup before the chorus and the trancey synths in the chorus.

I think the closest thing we have come to trancepop this decade were the Matrix and Futurebound singles, similar synths and buildups before the chorus, but drum and bass. The start of All I Know in particular is very trancey.

Reason is a very good song though of course not quite Castles In The Sky level, certainly one for many a playlist nevertheless.

Hadn't actually heard Will I before, sounds really nice!

ADORE Be Cool though, you wouldn't believe the moment of euphoria when I finally refound it (you can categorically put it in the ungoogable songs bracket) trawling through the early 00s Now albums. It's an utter stonker of a song dance.gif

Ahhh good old A Little Less Conversation, one of the very few songs of which I don't personally know anyone who doesn't like it. Inescapable is certainly the understatement with that song that year! Only negative with it keeping the masterpiece that is Scooter's The Logical Song off of #1 pirate.gif

Urgh I detest that Elvis song (although I don't really like any Elvis songs to be fair!) - the standard of late isn't getting any better for me.

well if only dance songs were eligible for the charts then maybe The Logical Song would have a #1 peak... dance.gif

Scooter ‎- The Logical Song

Date 14th Jul 2002
4 Weeks
Official Chart Run 7-5-2-4-2-2-4-8-10-18-21-27-33-48-73-x (15 weeks)

Next up the genius that is Scooter’s ‘The Logical Song’, heavily sampling the 1979 #7 English rock Supertramp hit of the same name, in a glorious techno/trance hybrid for one of the most instantly recognizable dance anthems of the 2000s... dance.gif dance.gif

Scooter formed in late 1993 out of synthpop band Celebrate The Nun, with vocalist/mc Hans Peter Geerdes (aka H.P. Baxxter) and producer Rick J. Jordan at its core. The bands first foray into happy hardcore ‘Hyper Hyper’ was a runaway success in their native Germany reaching #2 in 1994 and selling over 750,000 copies. ‘Move Your Ass’ (#23, Oct 1995), ‘Back In The UK’ (#18, Feb 1996) & ‘Rebel Yell’ (#30, May 1996) made waves in the UK. Towards the end of 1996 their sound tilted more towards hard house/trance ‘I’m Raving’ (#33, Oct 1996), ‘Fire’ (#45, May 1997), ‘Break It Up’ (#83, Jun 1997) & ‘The Age Of Love’ (#76, Nov 1997) paving the way to a five year exile from the UK charts. It was a different story on the continent where the hits kept on coming as Scooter became Germany’s most successful singles act.

It was with ‘Ramp! (The Logical Song)’ that they made a stunning comeback in the summer of 2002, defying the odds and entering at #7 before climbing to the dizzying heights of #2 for 3 non-consecutive weeks. Chart behaviour which very much went against the grain in the early years of the new millennium, initially blocked by Elvis VS JXL, they overhauled the king only to be thwarted by Pop Idol’s Gareth Gates awful ABBA ripoff ‘Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake)’. ‘The Logical Song’, with a number of lyrical references to the legendary KLF, sold over 400,000 copies and was the 15th biggest selling single of 2002. *.*

SCOOTAH! ARE YOU READY!!!!
(it's actually 'Are you Ratty' based on their pseudonym that reached #51 in the UK with 'Sunrise' in 2001, but still)

Don't care how much some sneer at them for being naff Euro nonsense, I f%@&ing love Scooter. Their album reaching #1 in 2008 is one of my favourite chart moments ever just cus of how much it shut the haters up, I saw them live twice that year and they were AWESOME both times.

Am I right in thinking The Box was a huge factor in this song's success thanks to them adding their video onto their playlist? That would explain the astonishing (for the time) chart run of entering low and rising high later. I remember the live Top of the Pops performance with a slightly baffled audience wondering what the hell they were witnessing, but being well and truly won over a few hits later! Love this track to bits and hugely deserved worldwide hit, even a #1 in Australia of all places.

One of my all time favourite bands! Their consistency is remarkable really, still loving them to this day on album #18!!! (Check out Mary Got No Lamb off of that - superb stuff)

Anyway The Logical Song... well what's there to say really other than it couldn't possibly be any more up my street. That album Push For The Beat For This Jam was the first CD I think I ever bought so it holds fond memories. I would always wind a friend up about this, saying it was far superior to the Supertramp original, well soz but I genuinely think it is!

Nessaja is even better IMO, one of the best of the decade.

The Logical Song is great, didn't like it much at the time, it was too heavy dance for me at that time.

My father hated it as he is a Spertramp fan. I think I do prefer this to the original, and concerning Supertramp nobody can forget the horrific Gym Class Heroes cover of Breakfast In America in 2007, showing how not to cover a Supertramp song.

But this Scooter song takes the operatic art-rock qualities of the original and adds the power of trance/techno to it, and is one of my favourite dance songs now.
