That version of Everywhere
Is the worst dance cover
I've heard in a while

I initially did think the vocal was a bit fast when I rediscovered it, but I do quite like it now even if it wasn't the best dance cover of the 00s (that probably goes to Freemasons Watchin' or Kelly Llorenna's Tell It To My Heart for me wub.gif ), it is also quite nostalgic as I do remember it quite a bit from the time.

It's not one of the best Basement Jaxx songs, it reminds me a bit of BJSC93's Bip Ling - Curry in its sort of light hearted spoken vocal and funky house instrumental.

I expect danG will post the next two once he has done BJSC93 duties, one of them has quite an unusual chart run for the time!

I'm the only one probably but I prefer Cabin Crew's Star to Fall to the Sunset Strippers version!

The latter had that 'in and out' type bass effect that gives me a headache, and is the same reason I don't like Call On Me sad.gif

That in and out bass effect started (at least in the 00s) with iio - Rapture I think? I don't mind it, the bass effect I didn't like was the minimal deep house songs between 2013-5 that were so minimally produced that the instrumentation was about the bassline and beat and nothing else, like Kiesza - Hideaway, Karen Harding - Say Something and DJ SKT - Take Me Away etc. I just found the instrumentals a bit dull and cold sounding. But those sound great now imo compared to today's beige tropical house and future bass songs, even if I still prefer early/mid 00s house.

Anyway the dance number 1 in 2005 with the most prominent bassline will happen after the next one!

Does anyone know how the Dance Chart was actually compiled in the 90s and 00s? It clearly wasn't based on pure sales like it seems to be now. Was there club plays added? Or was it only based on sales from specialist dance record shops?

Well it is weird as for the official charts apparent 'Dance Chart' for 2005 Slam by Pendulum reaches dance number 1, same with Technotronic ft DONS - Pump Up The Jam, even though there were much higher dance songs in the official chart those weeks.

Yes and going back through 90s charts you've got records that didn't even make the top 75 make the top 3 on the dance chart.

Sunset Strippers - Falling Stars

Date: 13th March 2005
Weeks at #1: 3 weeks
Official Chart Run: 3-5-9-14-18-18-23-26-40-42-52-66-69-x (13 weeks)

Following Cabin Crew's "Star To Fall" making it to #4 in the chart, Sunset Strippers set out to release their near-identical cover version the following week and ended up charting one place higher. Cabin Crew fell to #6 this week so it must have been an awkward moment for the chart presenter at the time having to play the two versions within minutes of each other, though not half as ridiculous as some of the events seen in the charts of 2017 so far! "Falling Stars" completed an all-"new" top three; we were in the middle of Elvis re-release season and "Good Luck Charm" entered at #2, with the year's Comic Relief single "All About You" by McFly entering at #1.

Whilst the two songs were very similar, "Falling Stars" had a different theme for its music video, being set in a launderette, whilst a guy wearing headphones singing and dancing to the song pictures himself performing it with women dancing sexily in the background when in reality he just looks like a crazy person as it turns out he is using a mop as a microphone and the sexy women were only there in his mind.

As Lenny explained in the last entry, the "Falling Stars" cover came about after Sony BMG refused to clear the sample for the release of "Star To Fall" so that they could make their own version to release on their label. "Star To Fall" did of course get a release though as the vocalist liked the remix so much he re-recorded his vocals for it. Ultimately it was the "Falling Stars" version that became the more successful, perhaps thanks to it being out on a larger label, as well as it winning an on-air vote on Radio 1 against "Star To Fall" as to which version the station should play, getting it an airplay advantage.

Two months later the sample would appear yet again in the chart, when Mylo sampled it for his #13 hit "In My Arms". It also contained a sample of "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes which helped it to be distinguished from Cabin Crew/Sunset Strippers.

The group were seen earlier in the thread under the alias Lost Brothers for their #21 hit 'Cry Little Sister (I Need U Now)'. They would have no further hits.

Studio B - I See Girls (Tom Neville Remix)

Date: 3rd April 2005
Weeks at #1: 2 weeks
Official Chart Run: 12-14-13-13-15-19-23-34-44-40-32-25-34-42-51-63-60-65-x(2)-67-x (19 weeks)

Studio B are a trio consisting of Harry Brooks, Simon Hulbert and Lewis Coleman. They released their debut single "I See Girls", with uncredited vocals by Romeo of So Solid Crew, in December 2003 but it could only reach #53 at the time. For its re-release in 2005 it was given a remix by electro-house producer Tom Neville, who had his own top 75 hit in March 2004 titled "Just f***" (#60). "I See Girls" then reached #12 in the charts and spent twelve weeks in the top forty, a lengthy amount for any single in 2005 let alone one that missed the top ten.

Like other dance songs at the time this of course came with a gimmicky music video. In this one the premise is that a man is being chased by girls wearing helmets but very little other clothing. That's basically it.

This song is quite notable for being one of the first big electro house hits (though let's not forget 2003's "Satisfaction") and starting the shift in trends from looped house to electro house, but believe me we're not quite there yet; there's still a fair bit of looped house to come for now. It is also ahead of its time in that the verses are rapped, we will start to see more rap-dance crossover towards the end of the decade when the likes of Dizzee Rascal have big hits.

Studio B had one more hit single, "C'mon Get It On" which charted at #28 in April 2006. Perhaps they could've had a slightly bigger second hit if they didn't wait a whole year to release a follow-up.

crazy how such a saccharine song like Waiting for a Star to Fall could generate so much interested smile.gif I know the original is cheesy but always liked it, and has a nice story, written after seeing a real falling star at a Whitney gig, they passed the song to Whitney, she rejected it, then to Belinda Carlisle, she recorded but rejected it too in the end, so they finally recorded it themselves smile.gif

I'm guessing it just started out as a fun 80s track that got 'revived' in clubs (as many did) in the early-mid noughties, as a kind of ironic/nostalgic throwback to people's childhood. Do they still do that? Six/seven years ago it was S Club, Backstreet Boys and the Pokemon theme...what is it now, Chico and the Crazy Frog? I'm so out of touch and out of time tongue.gif

Pretty sure that by now, the theme from Baywatch was getting hammered in clubs for similar reasons to the above, and various DJs around the world begin to have an idea...

I think the original (non-electro) 'I See Girls' was used in an advert around this time, or at least just before the remix was released? I remember hearing it for the first time and recognising the lyrics but not the instrumentation. What a bizarre chart run though! Is this the first dance #1 in the download era?

Didn't mind all the versions of 'Falling Stars' cheesy yes probably. But a guilty pleasure.

Quite a run 'I See Girls' had there. It was quite good then and still is now.

I do personally prefer "Falling Stars" to "Waiting For A Star To Fall" - the former I often play in my DJ sets if I touch on that style on the night. The throwback dance rehashes always go down well because they appeal to a wider audience.

Really like the Studio B track too - it really did deserve top 10 at the very least. Different to anything that was out at the time, cool track. I suppose most similar to Bodyrockers track if any.

what cause the second life for I See Girls? (that jump from 44 to 25 in 3 weeks is indeed uncommon)

I See Girls is great, remember the drop from the time particularly which I really liked, and the video (I liked how the golf bit was filmed, definitely the highlight of the video), but forgot it since then when I heard it on the radio in early 2015 again, I thought it was a new track, definitely was ahead of its time especially with the emphasis on the drop, the strong bassline and urban influence, all reminding me a little bit of the likes of Tough Love's So Freakin Tight 10 years later (probably why I thought it was a new track when I heard it on the radio in early 2015), albeit in an electro style rather than tropical. We still have these rapped lyrics house tracks, like Do it Like Me (Icy Feet).

Anyway I See Girls, like the other early electro hit Satisfaction, is way better than most late 2006 and 2007 electro songs for me.

The Sunset Strippers one is superior to the Cabin Crew one imo, containing more of the original song and it flows better too. It may be cheesy but not as cheesy as the likes of Object Of My Desire.

It isn't all looped house up to the start of the electro boom in late 2006, the other trend is the vocal funky house trend started by Lola's Theme which tends to last until about early 2007. These tracks in general didn't do quite as well as the looped house ones (which usually made top 10) but still quite a few of them went top 20, particularly in early 2006.

They wouldn't have played such a slow song as the original Waiting For A Star To Fall in clubs at the time? ohmy.gif

About today's nostalgia, I am not sure, but you would have thought of the early 00s dance types there would be a trance revival soon, the other early 00s dance genres of UK Garage and funky house have provided a few hits over the last few years, but trance hasn't provided any hits in years, probably because progressive house has taken its market share this decade, especially with stuff like Million Voices that many people who are not dance music genre experts could get confused with trance. But even progressive house doesn't do well in the charts any more. If trance did come back though, it would almost certainly have to be more chilled types to be deemed inoffensive enough to become a Spotify hit.
