Booty Luv - Shine

Date: 20th May 2007
Weeks at #1: 2 weeks
Official Chart Run: 25-10-10-13-15-26-39-58-68-64-x (10 weeks)

We first saw British dance duo Booty Luv in this thread when 'Boogie 2Nite' spent two weeks at number one in December 2006. Now their follow-up single does the same, despite a peak of just #10 in the real chart. It was the second single titled 'Shine' to make the top 10 in 2007, following Take That's unrelated song going to #1. Like 'Boogie', this was also a cover version. This time they covered Luther Vandross' 2006 single of the same name, which reached #50. The real inspiration for this cover however was the success of the Freemasons remix of Luther's 'Shine' in the clubs. Freemasons were not involved in the production of this version though, with production being credited to T&F & Moltosugo, whoever they are. It was released on MoS' Hed Kandi label.

It's an alright song, but not one I ever loved or go back to all that often. It doesn't excite me in the way that 'Boogie' does, and all their follow-ups seemed to be riding on the success of that. They would score three more top 20 hits but by the decade's end faded into irrelevance. With the funky house vibes in it, I'm sure Snakey would view this more favourably, but I am more into the electro house and European crossover hits of that era.

There are no other dance songs to report that made the charts in the two weeks covered here, though Snakey seems to think 'Dancing Lasha Tumbai' counts I don't.

Definitely not one of the best funky house songs, its OK though. The vocal is too poppy/Girls Aloud style for my liking, and the 'your time to shine, shine shine ' etc bit is a bit cheesy. Boogie 2 Nite sounds more dancey to me both vocally and with the production.

'Dancing Lasha Tumbai' sounds as dancey as Gunther - Ding Dong Song I think (which made dance number 1 for this thread) and is also a bit 90s eurodance-esque with the production I think. But I suppose if Verka Serduchka is mostly a pop artist, maybe you shouldn't include it as a dance song.

Speaking of international pop stars going dancier the real start of that becoming a trend I would say was in 2008 with 'Please Don't Stop the Music' and 'Give It 2 Me'.

There are two funky house songs in mid 2007 which I prefer to 'Shine' which both flopped in the low top 40, Corenell vs Lisa Marie Experience - Keep On Jumping and Sunfreakz ft Andrea Britton - Counting Down the Days (Axwell remix), the first one was a bit more understandable in flopping as it was just a new remix of a 90s track albeit a good one, whereas Counting Down The Days definitely should have done better imo.

I think the Counting Down The Days Axwell remix was on music channels a lot as I definitely think I remember it from the time.

I don't think I remember Keep on Jumping from the time though.

Bump.

The vocalist in our next song sounds rather pleased with themselves about something, that is a (quite subtle) clue to our next entry. I think its still danG's turn to post.

Shine was the weaker of all the Booty Luv singles for me.

The next one isn't among my faves of 2007, and the artist's previous single outshines it for me.

Calvin Harris - The Girls

Date: 3rd June 2007
Weeks at #1: 5 weeks
Official Chart Run: 9-3-6-4-9-18-25-30-34-35-31-43-59-x (13 weeks)

The next song to top the chart in the alternate universe where only dance songs exist is 'The Girls', the first of many dance number ones for Calvin Harris. If you've been living under a rock, Harris (born Adam Wiles) is a Scottish singer, DJ and producer. His first chart hit 'Acceptable In The 80s' could only reach #10 officially, and #2 in the dance chart, but this follow-up single instantly smashed those peaks to get to #9 on its first week and climbed to #3 in time for the release of first studio album 'I Created Disco' which he recorded at his home studio in Dumfries. The album reached #8 and eventually passed 230k chart sales and unlike later work it featured his vocals on all of the tracks.

'The Girls' is an electroclash song, a sub-genre that borrows heavily from the sounds of 1980s electronic music. Calvin of course made the 80s influence apparent in previous single 'Acceptable' and the theme was present in the album. Calvin hadn't yet properly broke outside of the UK, though the song reached the top 40 in Ireland and Australia. Lyrically it is a fun tongue in cheek song about Calvin being into any kind of girl and that he's a playa. And it's fair to say now that he does get all the girls, having had high-profile relationships (and break-ups) with Rita Ora and Taylor Swift (and lower-profile ones with some models).

Third and final single of the era 'Merrymaking At My Place' underperformed, only reaching #43, but as we all know this wasn't the end for Calvin. In 2008 he went on to get a top 10 hit as the producer of 'In My Arms' for Kylie Minogue, and a number one single as producer and guest vocalist for Dizzee Rascal's 'Dance Wiv Me' before getting a number one in his own right in 2009 with 'I'm Not Alone'. Back to those later on though.

Other dance hits at the time

Armand Van Helden - NYC Beat (#22)

Great electro house hit from the legend AvH.

Bob Sinclar & Cutee B - Sound Of Freedom (#14)

Inspired by Rozalla's 'Everybody's Free', this was the follow-up to their big #3 hit 'Rock This Party' and their last chart hit.

Corenell vs. Lisa Marie Experience - Keep On Jumping (#37)

Remake of the 90s hit originally by Lisa Marie Experience.

Cascada - A Never-ending Dream (#46)

How the hell did this miss top 40?!

That Keep On Jumping remix is brill, better than the original imo (although that is good too). Shame about the awful video though.

The Girls is nowhere near as good for me as Acceptable In The 80s. It is more dancey though I would say, AITE is more in an upbeat synthpop or post disco style that was popular in the early 80s before house came along.

A Never Ending Dream is my favourite Cascada song!

NYC Beat is good but not as good as his next charting single, the 80s hi-NRG influenced I Want Your Soul imo.

While I really liked (not loved, though) "The Girls" at the time, it does sound kind of naff looking back at it now and given the career that really took off in the coming years. I guess the whole "I'm a playa, I get all the girls" thing makes this one seem more novelty than anything. In fact, I suppose his whole first era was, really. Just him having fun with a keyboard and his voice.

The Chemical Brothers - Do It Again

Date: 8th July 2007
Weeks at #1: 1 weeks
Official Chart Run: 25-23-12-12-13-18-25-44-59-x (9 weeks)

We saw The Chemical Brothers earlier on in this thread way back in 2005 when 'Galvanize' topped the dance chart for four weeks. 'Do It Again' was released in 2007 as the lead single from their sixth studio album 'We Are The Night', the follow-up album to 'Push The Button' which 'Galvanize' was featured on. It peaked at #12 but its sole week as dance #1 was when it dropped to #13, the same week Calvin Harris dropped from 9 to 18. To date it is their final top 20 hit, and it is unlikely that they'll ever get another one. 'The Salmon Dance' followed this, peaking at #27 in the same year and they have not made the top 40 since, though came close with 2015 comeback single 'Go' (#46).

'Do It Again' is more of an electronic song, but like most of The Chemical Brothers' songs it is dancey enough to feature in this rundown. The song features Ali Love (born Alexander Williams) on vocals, who you may know as one of the members of Hot Natured ('Benediction', #40) and also half of the duo Infinity Ink ('Infinity', DNC). He also had a minor solo hit in 2007 with 'Secret Sunday Lover' (#45), and he sang on the Justice track 'Civilization' (#53) in 2011 and also Secondcity 'What Can I Do' (#85) in 2014.

The music video takes place in Morocco and follows two brothers who run away from home before getting hit by a cassette tape with the song on it, causing uncontrollable dancing to anyone who hears it, which they use to help rob a bank. The song was nominated for a Grammy for best dance recording, but lost to Justin Timberlake 'LoveStoned'. They did win the Grammy in 2006 for 'Galvanize' however.

The album 'We Are The Night' entered the chart at #1, becoming their fifth consecutive #1 album, and it was certified Gold. Follow-up album 'Further' (2010) was chart ineligible but they returned to #1 for a sixth time in 2015 with 'Born in the Echoes'. A greatest hits album, 'Brotherhood', was released in 2008, peaked at #11 and was certified Silver.

Personally I like it a fair bit, and it is one of their best songs, though 'Galvanize' to this day remains their absolute standout, and 'Hey Boy Hey Girl' I would call their second-best.

Really liked that track by the Chemical Brothers, played it loads at the time! Did better in the chart than I remember (in the sense it sustained it's position rather than free-fell). Deserved top 10 for sure.

Do It Again is good enough actually, a bit too indie influenced and cool sounding for me to really like though!
