Wasn’t a fan of Hearbroken to be honest. I forgot it even existed tbh. I’ll have to play it when I’m out DJing tonight, it should go down quite well!

"Heartbroken" I liked but it also felt a bit chavvy at the time - it led a sort of garage mini revival with songs like "What’s It Gonna Be" and "Daddy-O" in 2008.

Basshunter ft DJ Mental Theo's Bazzheadz - Now You're Gone
Date: 19th January 2008 Weeks at #1: 6 weeks Official Chart Run: 14-1-1-1-1-1-3-4-4-6-10-11-15-18-25-26-31-34-40-46-54-63-73-76-75-58-57-53-38-41-59-60-67-89 + 2 weeks (18/10/08) 92-98 + 4 weeks (03/01/09) 93-79-86-91 (20 weeks top 40 + 20 more weeks top 100) 2007's chart dance music was dominated by electro house, but the very end of 2007 and start of 2008 there was definitely a big change (although electro wasn't completely gone as we see later on in the year). We saw the bassline garage revival with the last dance number 1 "Heartbroken", and now another genre was being revived with 'Now You're Gone', eurodance. These two genres would largely dominate dance music at the start of 2008. Now You're Gone was originally 'Boten Anna' a song in Basshunter's native Swedish about a female Internet Relay Chat bot, which was a big hit in Europe in 2006-2007. For Now You're Gone the English language version, the tempo was speeded up and the lyrics changed with a new vocalist, Sebastian Westwood, singing them. I had wrongly assumed before it was Basshunter himself (Jonas Altberg) who sung them on this track. Production-wise it has a similar hard bouncy beat that a lot of 00s eurodance has, and it builds up to a dramatic drop which forms the climax of the song, announced by the words 'ready for take-off' . There is also a nice atmospheric part without a beat about half way through. Now You're Gone stayed at #1 for 5 weeks in the UK, and made #8 in the 2008 year end chart. It started the eurodance revival we would see in 2008 in the charts. We will see more from Basshunter later in this chart. |

It's good fun and all but I never got into this one to the extent of its 5 weeks at number 1 - which still shocks me immensely!

I wonder what started the whole eurodance revival of 2008, I read somewhere before it was started by fans of the genre on the internet.
Anyway, 'Now You're Gone' is brilliant I think, love the way it builds up to the climax 'ready for take off' and the drop. Would love to see a revival of that style of dance in the charts, although I can't see it happening any time soon. Really didn't like it at the time, the hard dance beat put me off. I preferred 'All I Ever Wanted' (which to my ears now sadly sounds a bit weak and lacklustre compared to 'Now You're Gone') This post has been edited by The Snake 🐍: 26th April 2018, 04:39 PM |

I remember disliking ‘Now Your Gone’ at the time probably because it was everywhere at the time and I was never really into the eurodance scene. I do t mind it as much nowadays.

H "Two" O feat. Platnum - What's It Gonna Be
Date: 24 February 2008 Weeks at #1: 4 weeks Official Chart Run: 7-2-2-2-3-10-14-15-21-24-28-33-43-50-52-67-87-97-x (16 weeks top 75 + 2 weeks top 100) Not too long since T2 brought 'back of the bus' bassline garage bangers into the chart in come H "Two" O and Platnum (correct spelling) with 'What's It Gonna Be', which followed in 'Heartbroken's footsteps even also spending three weeks at #2 behind a huge pop smash (Duffy's breakthrough hit 'Mercy'). The song is rather good, but pales in comparison to T2's hit from just a few months earlier in my opinion, it's a bit on the cheesy side with its overly happy lyrics and male to female call and response, not to mention the short 'rap' section. Not a huge fan really, don't regularly listen to it. H "Two" O consist of Selim Ben Rabha and Simon McDevitt who go by the names Solution and Oz, and they come from Leicester. The name H "Two" O is a reference to the name of the radio station where the pair first met before they started producing music themselves. They were a true one-hit wonder act, never having released another commercial single. Platnum are a vocal trio from Manchester consisting of two female singers; Mina Poli and Michelle McKenna, and male singer Aaron Evers. They were slightly more lucky, getting a second hit later that year with a cover of Kristine Blond's 'Love Shy', which we'll get to later in this thread. Both acts are still active, apparently. The track was popular in underground clubs which led to Hard2Beat picking it up for commercial release. Its music video was filmed in Dulwich College and features teenagers dancing in their school uniform before one of the girls unbuttons her shirt and shows off her legs and bra, because it's the 00s and you can't have a dance music video without any sex appeal!! The single was eventually certified Gold for passing 400,000 units in January of this year. |

I went from HATING this one to LOVING it! I mean, really, it's SO tacky, but I came to love that sound at the time in my early clubbing days. This track, the T2 one and also "Daddy-O" by Wideboys/Shaznay Lewis (which I was surprised at the time when it flopped) all went so well together.
I don't find myself revisiting it much, funnily enough. Tbh it feels like the equivalent of today's tracks like "Vroom" by Yxng Bane or "German" by EO - clearly naff songs from a genre that is just really popular at the moment with youth culture. It felt "cool" at the time |

Other dance songs in the chart from October 2007 to April 2008:
Samim - Heater (#12) Amazing instrumental house with an accordion, nothing we'd ever have seen before or indeed since Pendulum - Granite (#29) Drum n' bass as you expect, this was just before they properly made it big with 'Propane Nightmares'. Cascada - What Hurts The Most (#10) Their fourth top 10 hit single and a step up from 'Truly Madly Deeply' and 'Miracle' imo. Peter Gelderblom - Waiting 4 (#29) Great house track which samples Red Hot Chilli Peppers. David Guetta feat. Cozi - Baby When The Light (#50) Don't normally take note of top 40 misses but this was quite a big one, coming off the back of two top tens, didn't deserve to do so poorly. Filo & Peri feat. Eric Lumiere - Anthem (#39) I believe this is the last trance song to ever make top 40. Not a big fave but a decent last hurrah in the top 40 for the genre. Booty Luv - Some Kinda Rush (#19) A bit trashy and not one I go back to, like most of their songs. Hot Chip - Ready For The Floor (#6) Good electronic dance pop hit, don't get anything like it now. Mark Brown feat. Sarah Cracknell - The Journey Continues (#11) Or as you may know it, the Lloyds TSB advert music remix. Great underrated track. Delinquent feat. KCat - My Destiny (#19) Another bassline garage song but this wasn't quite as big as T2/H "Two" O. Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (#40) This is a bit more indie but still dance enough, which scraped top 40. |

NEVER thought ‘Baby when the light’ was Guetta’s! If so, it’s among my personal favourites, sunning house track!

Also really liked that Guetta track - he was so good in the 00s!
Love the Pendulum and Hot Chip tracks listed there too Just listening to the Hot Chip track again; it has aged SO badly This post has been edited by Midge: 20th May 2018, 10:34 PM |

Utah Saints - Something Good '08
Date: 24 February 2008 Weeks at #1: 4 weeks Official Chart Run: 31-21-25-13-9-8-12-13-17-17-19-23-33-37-35-46-45-53-60-71-83-74-63-88-x (24 weeks top 100) Originally released in 1992 and peaking at #4, 'Something Good' became the second of three consecutive top ten hits for English electronic music group Utah Saints and their biggest hit. As was often the trend in the 00s a remix of the song was done and it once again received a chart push, this time around peaking at #8 and belatedly giving them a fourth top ten hit (also to be their last). The song in both forms relies on a sample of 'Cloudbusting' by Kate Bush, itself a #20 hit in 1985. Utah Saints are a group from Leeds consisting of members Jez Willis and Tim Garbutt who met as music promoters and DJs in 1990 and described as "the first true stadium house band" by the KLF's Bill Drummond. They are still active as DJs/promotors but have not released any new music since 2000 when they released their second album 'Two'. 'Something Good' was remixed by a number of artists, including Australian electropop band Van She whose remix was used as the official single (though they received no chart credit). The Kate Bush vocal sample was re-recorded by West End singer/actress and former Pop Idol contestant Davina Perera for this version also. The music video is set in a bar in Cardiff and features a man doing the 'running man' dance, and others join him throughout the song. It won them an award for 'best dance video' of the year, and the song was also the most-played of the year on BBC Radio 1 (apparently, Wiki is saying citation needed on that one). Utah Saints took four years to follow up this success with another top 40 hit, a re-release of #10 hit 'What Can You Do For Me' which was remixed by Drumsound & Bassline Smith. The new version charted at #28, and they have not released anything since. Personally I prefer this version to the original by a long way, and it is quite possibly one of the best dance tracks of the late 00s, very energetic and just what the charts needed back when there wasn't a whole lot of house music in the chart. |

*really* liked "Something Good '08" - was on heavy rotation for me at the time! Prefer it to the original "Something Good" from the 90s.
Another Utah Saints track I really liked was "Funky Music" from 2000. So easy to forget they did actually go top 40 again with the Drumsound & Bassline Smith version of "What Can You Do For Me" - completely forgot about that, quite liked it. |

'What's It Gonna Be' is a good tune if a bit cheap and trashy sounding . It's not as good as Heartbroken though, as a bassline garage track.
As for Something Good 08 it is good, but I prefer the original of 'Something Good' with its rave synths tbh. 'The Journey Continues' I really liked at the time iirc, I especially liked the classical music influence in it. 'Granite' is excellent, apparently Goldie didn't like it much though. 'What Hurts the Most' is great too, I agree that it is better than their cover of Truly Madly Deeply and their song Miracle. 'Waiting 4' is great, I think I remember it from the time, great progressive house track. 'Anthem' is great, last unremixed trance top 40 I think, although Arty's remix of 'Hey Now' by London Grammar is arguably trance and that remix drove most of the sales for that song iirc. |

The original Something Good is one of my favourite dance tracks of all time. Unusually, for a remix, the Van She version was terrific too.

Bodyrox featuring Luciana "Yeah Yeah" thoroughly deserved to be a dance number 1 as well but that's what happens when there's a monster hit! Here it is below: Interesting fact, the original "Yeah Yeah" is a completely different track, the version we al know is the originally instrumental D. Ramirez remix with new vocals by Luciana.
