Dizzee Rascal ft Calvin Harris & Chrome - Dance Wiv Me

Date: 06 July 2008
Weeks at #1: 8 weeks
Official Chart Run: 1-1-1-1-2-3-5-6-8-9-13-19-24-28-31-34-37-43-49-46-57-65-82-84-90-50-31-38-49-48-59-65-66-80-77-76-82-90-98-89-84-75-68-62-48-42-62-67-77-78-90-xx-99-86-90-80-70-68-87-99-xx-89 (39 weeks top 75 +21 top 100)

A match made in heaven: grime star Dizzee Rascal and rising star DJ Calvin Harris collaborated for "Dance Wiv Me", featuring the additional vocal talents of R&B unknown Chrome. The clash of grime, dance and R&B bought the three of them monumental success unreached by any of them before, particularly pushing Calvin Harris into a spotlight he hasn't since left.

The collaboration came about after Dizzee and Calvin met at Radio 1's Big Weekend 2007. Dizzee was a big fan of "Acceptable In The 80s" and was keen to work with Calvin. The pair never actually met during the making of the track, with Dizzee sending a sample of his acapella over the top of another track to give Calvin some ideas.

Dizzee was quoted as saying in the Daily Star that "experimenting with dance music is a good way for British rappers to get on the radio and into the charts. Some people might see this as me selling out but no way. Every track I write I try to make different from the last and as my profile has risen with all the festivals and live shows I've done; I've wanted to experiment more." It is also of note that Wiley had recently had success with his grime-dance crossover "Wearing My Rolex".

"Dance Wiv Me" ended up being the lead single from Dizzee's "Tongue n' Cheek" which spawned further hits in his Armand van Helden collaboration "Bonkers", a further Calvin Harris and Chrome collaboration "Holiday", the Adventures Of Stevie V sampling "Dirtee Cash", and from a deluxe re-issue of the album, the One True Voice singer Daniel Pearce featuring "Dirtee Disco". "Dance Wiv Me" was also included on Calvin's 2nd album "Ready For The Weekend". Both Dizzee and Calvin are to feature further in this thread before the end of the decade.

At the time, these big genre hybrids weren't so regular and so really stood out. It could be said that "Dance Wiv Me" led to a huge trend in mainstream dance-urban tracks that were to come. This was also the beginning of Dizzee's foray into the mainstream. Spending 8 weeks at the top of the dance chart, 4 weeks at the top of the UK singles chart with 10 weeks in the top 10, 12 in the top 20, 17 in the top 40, 39 weeks in the top 75 and 60 in the top 100, "Dance Wiv Me" was inescapable in 2008 through 2009.

The extended mix of "Dance Wiv Me" contained a soulful intro and outro from Chrome. The music video showed Dizzee Rascal and Chrome on a night out in a club, with Calvin Harris behind the bar. Official remixes were provided by Niteryders, Agent X, DJ Rap, Dirty Vegas, Jason Nevins, Shazam, The Aston Shuffle and DJ Frizzo.

it's a bit of a tune but not one I revisit all that often, Calvin's got lots of better songs and I prefer 'Holiday' and 'Bonkers' for Dizzee.

Its a great fun tune, but yes like you dang, not one I revisit that often.

I don't think I remember it that much from the time, but then I wasn't really keeping up with modern music much at that time.

Wow at that chart run though. ohmy.gif

Eric Prydz - Pjanoo

Date: 31 August 2008
Weeks at #1: 5 weeks
Official Chart Run: 2-2-6-11-20-24-32-44-56-56-57-66-69-83-x-100-x (15 weeks top 100)

Following his massive #1 hit 'Call On Me' in 2004 and #2 hit 'Proper Education' in 2007, Eric Prydz would grace the top end of the chart once more with modern day house music classic 'Pjanoo'. Similarly to 'Education' this unfortunately stalled at #2 behind a huge pop hit, this time it was unlucky enough to be behind the debut chart appearance for Katy Perry and 'I Kissed A Girl', on its 4th and 5th of its five weeks spent at #1. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this is my favourite Dance #1 of 2008, and a fine example of a brilliant progressive house track.

The track, appropriately titled 'Pjanoo' (I guess that's how they say 'piano' in Sweden, Prydz' home country) is based around a piano riff, and the music video also prominently features the instrument, playing by itself too. It is also one of the few tracks we see in this thread to feature no lyrics at all, as quite rightly the instrumental was great enough to stand on its own and no pointless vocal mix was commissioned.

The track apparently started its life in 2006 when Prydz played it in a club, but the song did not take off until he played it again in 2008 and a rip of the song made it to YouTube, prompting him to release a studio version, which was picked up by Ministry of Sound's Data Records in the UK, and Ultra Records elsewhere. It made #6 in the Swedish chart, and its highest peak position was achieved in the UK, most likely helped a lot by BBC Radio 1's love for it, including its usage in adverts for their Big Weekend and Weekend in Ibiza events.

Around this time Prydz became friends with a group of three other Swedish DJs who called themselves the "Swedish House Mafia", but eventually chose not to be part of the group prior to their official formation and their short but stellar career, which we'll get into more a lot later whenever we have a 2010s Dance Chart #1s thread.

A re-edit of the song titled 'Eric's Intro Edit' was included on his debut compilation album 'Eric Prydz Presents Pryda', a triple album released in 2012 with new material on the first disc, as well as a documentation of a number of songs he had produced over the previous eight years over the remaining two discs. It may appear odd that none of his other hit singles were included on the compilation in any form, but Prydz himself was attempting to distance himself from the song that made him really famous, 'Call On Me', as he had grown tired of the song and wished to be seen as a more credible producer and DJ. Despite that, it did make it to #40 in the UK chart, and Prydz to this day is very well respected in the dance community for what he has done for the genre of progressive house music.

He would make the album chart again with debut studio album 'Opus' in 2016, this time 'only' a double album (both discs consisting of mostly unreleased material), which went to #23. In the singles chart he would have no other top 40 hits, as unfortunately he left it too long to follow up the success of 'Pjanoo' with another commercial single, and when he did with 'Niton (The Reason)' in 2011 it could only make it to #45. He had one last minor hit, 'Liberate', in 2014, which went to #71, whilst a remix of CHVRCHES 'Tether' released in 2015 just missed the official chart, making it to #107. Most recently he won DJ of the Year at the 2017 Electronic Music Awards and was nominated for Live Act of the Year. He also to this day regularly puts out non-commercial singles under the aliases Pryda and Cirez D.

The reason Pjanoo was his only hit track on the album was that Pjanoo was actually released first under his Pryda moniker, the commercial release was, understandably, released as Eric Prydz. The album was supposed to track his Pryda releases. However, "Niton" was the same case and does not appear on the album even in its original instrumental form.

Basshunter - Angel In The Night

Date: 05 October 2008
Weeks at #1: 1 week
Official Chart Run: 54-24-22-21-14-17-21-31-40-50-64-76-87-xx-96-xx-77-75-84 (12 weeks top 75 +5 top 100)

Scandinavian DJ Basshunter grabs a 2nd dance number 1 with "Angel In The Night" ("All I Ever Wanted" missed out thanks to the mammoth hit that was "Dance Wiv Me").

"Angel In The Night" takes the synth riff off a previous Basshunter track - a collaboration with Ozo called "Storm Of Fantasy" - and was included on "Now You're Gone - The Album". It was fashionable at the time for European dance/dance-pop acts to release albums titled after their big hit single.

The song is a eurodance track as was Basshunter's style at the time, crossing over into hardcore techno. It is perhaps even cheesier than "Now You're Gone" and "All I Ever Wanted".

"Angel In The Night" peaked at number 14 in the UK singles chart, Basshunter's first to miss the top 10 after his 5-week stint at number 1 with "Now You're Gone" and the #2 hit "All I Ever Wanted". Parent album "Now You're Gone - The Album" peaked at number 1 in the UK albums chart knocking Coldplay's "Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends" off of the top - and subsequently being knocked back off by the same album after a week at the top.

A further single from the album, "I Miss You", made the UK singles chart - peaking at #32 in December 2008 - the same week Basshunter's Christmas single "Jingle Bells (Bass)" peaked at #35. The lead single from "Bass Generation" called "Every Morning" looked set to be a huge single before limping in at #17 in the UK singles chart. One further single, the Reel 2 Reel "I Like To Move It" sampling "Saturday", reached the UK singles chart top 75, peaking at #21 in 2010.

Pjanoo is very good, possibly THE track that started the whole boom in progressive house from 2009 to 2012. Angel In The Night is cheesy but fun.

'When You Touch Me' is a great funky house tune I sadly didn't appreciate that much at the time, as I was being snobby and had largely gone off chart music in general at that stage.

I loved Pjanoo and I can't believe that it is almost 10 years old!

Can't Stop Moving was a #1 for me - but in 2007, think the Mirwais remix necessitated a welcome re-release; I think I've got both releases on CD single too!

I always thought that Pjanoo was just a very long intro to a trance anthem. I was disappointed when it never developed into that.

Platnum - Love Shy (Thinking About You)

Date: 12 October 2008
Weeks at #1: 1 week
Official Chart Run: 20-12-19-26-29-41-48-71-x (8 weeks top 100)

Bassline garage group Platnum were seen not too long ago in this thread with 'What's It Gonna Be', and managed to get a second hit single. The song 'Love Shy' was originally recorded by Danish singer Kristine Blond which made the top 40 on two occasions, #22 in 1998 and #28 upon 2000 re-release. In 2007 the song was given a bassline remix by Shaun 'Banger' Scott which became the inspiration for Platnum's own version (subtitled 'Thinking About You'), which as with 'Gonna Be' was released on Hard2Beat. They had no more hits but the success of the song landed them a support gig for N-Dubz in 2009.

Platnum are a vocal trio from Manchester consisting of two female singers; Mina Poli and Michelle McKenna, and male singer Aaron Evers. They formed in 2004 and are still going now. Their most recent release comes from January of this year, with a song titled 'Looking For Love' which is in collaboration with another dance act very much long gone from the charts, Sweet Female Attitude. It has a whopping five thousand plays on Spotify, which really highlights just how irrelevant both acts have become.

The production in 'Love Shy' is very similar to 'Gonna Be', unsurprisingly as with the bassline sub-genre more than most all the songs sound really samey and the sound got stale fast. People generally seemed to agree as by this point the genre started to fade out in mainstream popularity, becoming completely absent from the chart by 2009, minus possibly one or two minor hits that I don't remember. I'm not much of a fan of this, and like Basshunter just before, it is better left in the past. A nice listen and a bit of a bop, but one of the weaker Dance #1s of the year. Generally speaking bassline garage doesn't really do that much for me, with the exception of T2's 'Heartbroken' which really was the genre's commercial and creative peak.

Eleven more weeks of 2008 to cover but only two songs left, what could they possibly be?

This is very cheesy but still good. dance.gif

KCat and Deliquent - My Destiny is another rather cheesy but good bassline garage hit from 2008 which hasn't been mentioned on this thread so far I don't think.

Sash! featuring Stunt - Raindrops (Encore Une Fois)

Date: 19 October 2008
Weeks at #1: 1 week
Official Chart Run: 9-9-11-18-29-32-40-50-62-77-55-50-43-58-84 (13 weeks top 75 +2 top 100)

Sash! was one of the biggest DJs of the 1990s, and also grabbed the third dance number 1 of the 2000s with "Adelante", but it wasn't until much later in the decade that he'd return to the top. It was in fact a track based on 1990s smash hit "Encore On Fois" that would break him back, a melodic and vocal heavy version titled "Raindrops (Encore Une Fois)" featuring Stunt - a dance music project consisting of producers/remixers Pete Kirtley, Simon Wills and Dave Valler, and Molly Smitten-Downes on vocals.

The updated version of "Encore Une Fois" was in fact a mash up with Stunt's 2006 track - coincidentally titled "Raindrops" - which was initially picked up by Ministry Of Sound in the UK and Ultra Records in the US in the early part of 2006, however it was the mash up in 2008 - released through Hard2Beat Records - that propelled "Raindrops (Encore Une Fois)" to the UK Singles Chart Top 10 and the number 1 dance track for a week. Numerous remixes were released in support, including the Fonzerelli remix I'd often hear on nights out and would play on my university radio show! The Kindervater remix was also popular. Kindervater were also involved in the main mashup version released.

"Raindrops (Encore In Fois)" stayed in the UK Singles Chart Top 10 for 2 weeks, adding to Sash!'s tally of 8 top 10 hits including FIVE number 2 hits: the original of "Encore Une Fois", "Ecuador", "Stay", "Mysterious Times" and "Adelante". I always felt "Colour The World" deserved to do much better than it did - a surprisingly low number 15 peak, falling out of the top 40 after just 3 weeks, following a run of 6 consecutive top 10 hits. Stunt's "Raindrops" actually reached a number 51 peak itself in January 2006 - however Stunt otherwise never had another top 75 hit. Album "Neon Nights" was shelved after singles "I'll Be There" and "Fade Like The Sun" did nothing in the charts.

Of course, one member of Stunt would go on to have another moment in the limelight: Molly Smitten-Downes went on to represent the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014 with the rousing "Children Of The Universe". Initially one of the favourites to win the contest after having been selected through the BBC Introducing system, Molly was drawn to perform last on the night at the contest in 2014, finishing in 17th place, way behind eventual winner Conchita Wurst with "Rise Like A Phoenix". The "Children Of The Universe" single which was supported with a remix by none other than Scott Mills, but not Stunt, reached number 23 in the UK Singles Chart.

Sash! has not returned to the charts since this appearance though his legacy goes on.

Raindrops (Encore Une Fois) is a great update I think on the original Encore Une Fois and is wonderfully euphoric. One of the last hits from the eurodance genre in the UK, the 2008 revival was coming to its end sadly.

After the excellent "Dance Wiv Me" and incredible "Pjanoo", it has been hard to get excited about the batch since - the Sash! one much better at least than the trashy Basshunter track, and the cheap sounding Platnum track, though I quite liked that at the time.

Guru Josh Project - Infinity 2008

Date: 26 October 2008
Weeks at #1: 12 weeks
Official Chart Run: 3-4-6-9-8-11-13-17-24-21-18-18-18-31-34-41-47-63-65-60-47-49-59-66-83-93-93-97-x (28 weeks top 100)

The final Dance #1 of 2008 belongs to Guru Josh Project with 'Infinity 2008'. The song started its life in 1989 as an acid house track titled 'Infinity (1990s... Time For The Guru)' which peaked at #5 in the UK in 1990, released by Guru Josh (real name Paul Walden). He followed the song with 'Whose Law (Is It Anyway?)' which peaked at #26 in 1990 also before disappearing from the chart until 2008. Between these years he quit music to have a successful career in Ibiza focusing on art and running a promotions company.

The title 'Infinity' was inspired by the name of a warehouse party his friend had which he was given money to produce a song for. Though he was told he was crazy for putting a saxophone in the song and had the record thrown in the bin initially, it eventually got played at Hacienda which helped it become a hit single the first time around. The sax remains focal point of the song in the remix version that appears in this thread, which became an even bigger hit than the original.

In 2008 Darren Baile formed the Guru Josh Project alongside Anders Nyman and Guru Josh to release 'Infinity 2008', which was remixed by German DJ Klaas for the single release. Updated for the times, it did not have any resemblance of acid house/rave, instead being a progressive house anthem. I very much prefer this version unsurprisingly and it is one of my faves of the era.

It peaked at #1 in Belgium/Flanders, Denmark, France and in the Eurochart Hot 100, and made the top 10 all across Europe. It spends 12 weeks at #1 in the UK dance chart mostly due to a lack of other significant dance releases at the time, but it also had a very impressive chart run. It debuted at #3 behind a #1 debut from Girls Aloud ('The Promise') and the previous week's #1 from P!nk ('So What').

Following the success Guru Josh made somewhat of a return to music, though no album was released (his debut 'Infinity' from 1990 remaining his only studio album). The follow-up to 'Infinity 2008' was released in 2009 titled 'Crying In The Rain', which received no commercial push in the UK nor did it make the chart anywhere. An 'Infinity 2012' was also released, remixed by Swiss producers DJ Antoine and Mad Mark. This also failed to chart except for in a few European countries. His final single release was 'Ray Of Sunshine' in 2013 which charted nowhere.

In December 2015 Guru Josh at the age of 51 was found dead by his manager, which was ruled as a suicide.
