I would be surprised if the winners of League B in A & D would stay in League A if they played in the tournament.

True. The biggest shock was Bermuda making League A (they also are going to make their Gold Cup debut in 2019 along with Guyana), I expect some massive blowouts versus Mexico. El Salvador have had some down years, much like Guatemala but have had better results lately. A decade or so ago they would be almost equal to Costa Rica, Panama, and Honduras much of the time. Guatemala is only in League C because FIFA had a ban on them when qualifying began so they decided to just tack them onto League C to be fair when they really belong in B at least.

Also, watch for Montserrat, known globally as a minnow. Remember they lost 0-4 to Bhutan in the "Other Final" in 2002 on the same day as the World Cup Final. It pitted the two worst ranked nations against each other. That ranking they have now is no fluke as they were legit during CONCACAF Nations League qualifying. They now field a team with many English born players that would never make their own national team and play on English clubs at the lower levels (not Premier League) so they now have more talent than many nations around them.

You make a good point there about Montserrat^ however it was Bhutan who beat them 4-0 in 2002, not Sri Lanka.

Oops and I knew that too, I just for some reason had Sri Lanka pop into my head when I typed it.

The first matches for the 2022 World Cup Qualification have been drawn. Asia starts things off with their first round, the six winners of the home-and-away fixtures will advance to a 40-team / 8-group round 2 involving the rest of Asia's region. (^^ Added to the summer schedule above)

FIFA sill hasn't decided on 32 or 48 teams for the Qatar World Cup, so most other regions have not firmed up how their qualification will go. CONCACAF for one, is thinking of doing away with the "hex" and coming up with a format that involves more of its teams in the final qualifying rounds. This will likely be decided in June after FIFA has their annual conference.

I would think that it will be 32 teams for the Qatar World Cup.

Yes, it is much more likely the 2026 cup across North America will be the first to feature an expanded tournament to that degree.

That was the thought originally but FIFA has since not confirmed Qatar yet and says 48 teams is still on the table. A vote on it will be a part of the upcoming conference.

Not sure how Qatar would cope if it was expanded. The schedule would have to be changed wouldn't it?

In April 2018, CONMEBOL (South America) requested that the 2022 World Cup be expanded from 32 to 48 teams. FIFA President Infantino expressed a willingness to explore the idea. At first the idea was rejected, but would first discusss the idea with the host country; Qatar was receptive. Studies concluded that it was "feasible" to have a 48-team tournament in Qatar if some matches were played in neighboring countries (probably UAE). There was a fear that after this change, countries that lost the hosting bid for the 2022 World Cup could take legal action but they concluded the risk of that was low. FIFA and Qatar will discuss possible new 'joint bids' in June 2019 and a final vote will be taken on June 5th 2019 at the 69th 69 FIFA Congress in Paris.

That's now going to stay at 32 teams for 2022, the World Cup.

Again, really appreciate you doing this, 'Summer 2019 Match Schedule', DJHazey.

I'm glad it's 32 teams again, to be honest. I wish they hadn't changed it at all. To me, the World Cup is THE elite tournament and anymore than 32 starts to water it down.

I have to say I'm not a massive fan of the possibility of an expansion, I feel like it would take a bit of the limelight away from the teams that did qualify, even though I do like a good underdog.

First tournament winner this month is Zambia winning the COSAFA Cup over Botswana, their fifth such title and first tournament victory of any kind since their upset win over Ivory Coast in the 2013 African Cup of Nations.

Asia has Guam, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Mongolia, and Bangladesh advance to the second round of its 2022 WC Qualifying where they will join the 34 nations with a first-round bye. Groups for that are drawn in July.
