BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Brit Award: Critics Choice

Posted by: cqmerqn 29th November 2017, 12:26 AM

So the Brits have announced the Critics Choice for the Brits in 2018.

Who do you think has the most potential to be a chart force in 2018?

Posted by: cqmerqn 29th November 2017, 12:29 AM

I went for Stefflon Don. Her new single will bomb but she should be back on track soon for a great 2018.

Posted by: Lenny 29th November 2017, 12:31 AM

I've gone for Jorja Smith. Her track with Drake was great and I think I heard another track from her at some point that appealed. Can't say I remember it though!

This feels like a bit of a weird list, it contains 2 acts that were on Sound of 2017 and one that was on Sound of 2016 laugh.gif All three of them are semi established already, could they find no appropriate new acts? (They're all pretty similar musically as well...)

Jorja is probably my favourite of the 3 but they're all pretty much on the same level. Absolutely no idea who is most likely to win it.

Posted by: Jonjo 29th November 2017, 01:55 AM

I actually can't see any of these 3 being any bigger than they currently are? Maybe that's just me.

But I'll go for Mabel.

Posted by: Jupiteer 29th November 2017, 08:39 AM

I imagine Mabel might get it due to her existing industry connections

Posted by: Bjork 29th November 2017, 09:41 AM

Mabel is the best out of the 3, but I'd say Stefflon Don will get it

Posted by: HarryApa 29th November 2017, 10:39 AM

I said Mabel out of the three.

Also, who won last year I can't remember who?

Posted by: ML Hammer95 29th November 2017, 10:48 AM

I like all 3 so don't really mind who wins! I think it'll be Mabel, but should be Jorja Smith.

Drag'n'Bone Man

full list:
2008 - Adele
2009 - Florence + The Machine
2010 - Ellie Goulding
2011 - Jessie J
2012 - Emeli Sande
2013 - Tom Odell
2014 - Sam Smith
2015 - James Bay
2016 - Jack Garratt
2017 - Rag'n'Bone Man

Posted by: M4NG0 29th November 2017, 11:16 AM

I think Stefflon Don will be the new Nicki Minaj for a year or two.

Posted by: FleetSeb 29th November 2017, 11:48 AM

At least it will be a female winner again for the first time in ages!

Hope it's Jorja Smith, saw her in NYC this summer and she was great.

Posted by: DouglasLisboa 29th November 2017, 12:05 PM

I quite like Jorja Smith, but where’s her album? Her career isn’t going to nowhere only that appearance on Drake’s album.
I don’t know the situation with her label, but there’s clearly a lack of management there.

Posted by: danVember 29th November 2017, 02:48 PM

Well she did just have a minor hit single with 'On My Mind' (#54 peak), she needs more than that before she puts out an album though.

I expect Mabel will win this as 'Finders Keepers' was a top 10 and they've never given it to a rapper before so Stefflon seems less likely.

Posted by: CardiiB 29th November 2017, 04:15 PM

None will be as big as the 3 nominees last year (Dua, Rag N Bone man and Anne Marie are all still doing really well) so not as interested

I'll predict Mabel
I would like Stefflon

Posted by: Bjork 29th November 2017, 04:23 PM

what happened to jack garratt?

Posted by: Klumzee 29th November 2017, 04:34 PM

I voted for Jorja as I misread the question and thought it said 'who would you like to win?'

As for I think will win... well I'm fairly undecided! Stefflon Don is the biggest of the three currently but gut feeling tells me she won't have longevity with her success (not just because of Ding-A-Ling), I feel like Mabel is still yet to establish herself as I think her success is based on the strength of Finders Keepers rather than meriting her artistry, she could be a one-hit wonder, although hopefully not as she has some excellent previous material. My personal favourite is Jorja and seeing as she hasn't had any big hits unlike the other two I'm hoping for her - she does have potential but her only moderate success, 'On My Mind', was a bit average and rightfully didn't blow up so I'm unsure!

As Bre says most of these have been about for ages!

Aside from Jack Garratt that list is pretty extraordinary really. This award is really huge.

I love many of Mabel’s songs. I don’t know much of Jorja’s but I love On My Mind and Teenage Fantasy. Stefflon isn’t for me although Instruction is great.

He sold fewer albums than Bradley Walsh?

Posted by: André 30th November 2017, 12:39 AM

The Critics' Choice winners usually have huge debuts and the full support of the industry.

Everyone 'cept for Ellie Goulding, Tom Odell and Jack Garratt went on to sell over 1 million with their debut albums, with at least three of them surpassing 2 million copies sold. Ellie reached the 1 million mark with her second album (helped by a reissue, of course) and Rag'N'Bone Man will also probably reach the mark soon. Until Jack Garratt, the worst performing winner was Tom Odell which still went Platinum (and had a super messed-up roll out because the album was released a long time after his hit since since it was postponed to match the US release date).

They generally pick pretty safe choices to be fair (again, Jack Garratt aside).

Posted by: Jack 30th November 2017, 09:10 AM

I don't know if I can see any of Mabel, Stefflon or Jorja being huge album sellers tbh. I'd say Mabel would be the safest bet.

Posted by: D0bz 30th November 2017, 07:33 PM

Stefflon cos she'll snag the features to stay more in the limelight.

Posted by: SLlewellyn 30th November 2017, 11:11 PM

I’ve gone for Jorja Smith - excited to hear the result in a few days’ time (we never have to wait long to find out).

Posted by: cqmerqn 4th December 2017, 12:26 PM

WINNER: Jorja Smith (!?)

Posted by: Jack 4th December 2017, 12:29 PM

Interesting choice, I can't see her being that big but we'll see.

Posted by: Mistletheo 4th December 2017, 01:11 PM

Oh.

Literally the most disappointing outcome of the three. She's still riding the wave of appearing on Drake's album. I've only heard "On My Mind" of her own songs but it sounds like something that AlunaGeorge/Disclosure would've released in 2013. Still hoping Stefflon has a proper smash follow up to "Hurtin Me" soon.

Posted by: Michael Bubré 4th December 2017, 01:25 PM

Good winner, I hope she can go on to have some success. She has a lot of potential based on 'Blue Lights' and her Drake collab ('On My Mind' is decent as well).

Posted by: Bjork 4th December 2017, 01:43 PM

surprising

Posted by: SevenSeize 4th December 2017, 01:57 PM

Jorja is the best of the three from what I've heard so far (especially Blue Lights and On My Mind <3), not that fussed about Stefflon or Mabel honestly even though they'll likely have more commercial success

Posted by: ML Hammer95 4th December 2017, 02:03 PM

Good news, she is probably the one who needs the boost the most (although she is doing fine anyway) but at the same time, she is the safest choice. Imagine the statement of backing Stefflon Don.

If she has considerable backing - think J Hus, Stormzy or Stefflon Don, she'll have a smash single next year. And with the right exposure, she'd sell albums. I mean, there is a massive gap for a female British R&B artist right now (applies to Mabel too).

Posted by: omrimayo 4th December 2017, 02:23 PM

I don't like this years choice. At all.

Posted by: burbe 4th December 2017, 10:04 PM

Jorja *.* She really needs this exposure to elevate her success up a level so very pleased to see this!

Tom Odell's album was released just a week after Another Love's re-issue and top 10 placing! It did have a messy release though, it was postponed to several months after the BRITs unlike most cases (certainly in recent times anyway with Sam, James and Rag'n'Bone Man). All things considered, I'd say he did pretty well, he was certainly the least commercial winner of the award up to that point (and I must say, he's my personal favourite, which is no mean feat when the list is so strong).

Jorja's an interesting pick, I loved Blue Lights but wasn't so keen on On My Mind. I remain optimistic anyway, hope she can bring something good out!!
