Spice track: where are they now?
(Times 2 Tiday) Posh Spice Since cancelling Christmas 2003 to frantically promote double A-side single Let Your Head Go/This Groove, yet still failing to get her much-coveted No 1 solo hit, Posh has abandoned pop to concentrate on what she does best. Just what that is she has yet to disclose, but in the meantime she has been constantly thin and brown and dressed in garish sheaths, much like a human Pepperami. Baby Spice The only Spice one could imagine speaking to for any length of time without jumping down a well, Emma Bunton has quietly gone about building a dignified solo career. Admirably, this career took as its starting point the fact that Bunton looks at her best in videos in an above-the-knee shift dress, and based a whole album of finger-clicking Sixties pop around it. Genius. Ginger Spice Despite having clocked up four solo No 1 singles, old Orange is now irreducibly doomed by the taint of “desperate mad-eyed loser” — attained by carrying a small incontinent dog around in a bag, eating chocolate cake out of George Michael’s bin, basing a whole video on her anorexic yoga skills, having a baby with a man who looks like Herbert Viola from Moonlighting and never, ever being quite as entertaining as she was when she was two stone heavier and had hair like Ronald McDonald. Scary Spice Loud in her intentions to become an actress, Melanie Brown had, perhaps, figured that she had better find something else to do when her last solo album sold 670 copies. Always credited as being the “maddest” Spice, an image borne out by her last two decisions: to veto a surely-triumphant Spice Girls reunion at Live 8, and to start dating Eddie Murphy. Sporty Spice Melanie Chisholm bizarrely “blamed the Spice Girls” for her latterly dismal solo career, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the public also “blamed the Spice Girls” for her having a solo career at all. Except for that single she did with Bryan Adams. That one was good. |
