This may have been discussed before (and probably has), but I was just wondering what were some of the best selling songs not to make the top 10, 20 or 40 - or indeed which only spent a week or two there before disappearing into the nether regions. I know for certain that "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons is the biggest seller not to make the top 10, but it would be great to know some of the others.

'Amazed' by Lonestar peaked at #21 and I think it was once the record-holder for the biggest-selling single not to reach the top 20.
'I'm Yours', 'I Won't Give Up', 'Let It Go' and 'Set Fire to the Rain' have to be four of the biggest-selling #11s, surely? I wonder how much '212' has sold now? It had such an extraordinary chart run for a #12 single from what I can remember. I'm sure it must still get a lot of trickle sales too. |

Isn’t “Gold Dust” by DJ Fresh the biggest selling single to not make the Top 20?

It probably won't be getting too many trickle sales now though, considering certain recent events (On a serious note, it's probably somewhere between 450k and 500k at a rough guess...) |

Incorrect : Idina Menzel - Let It Go had sold 1083k to 7/1/16 (and probably 50k more since then), while Radioactive had sold 984k to 28/4/16 Adele - MYFML was at 1032k at 31/12/15 Jason Mraz - IY was at 969k at 21/4/16 This post has been edited by vidcapper: May 30 2016, 03:12 PM |

The ones that come to mind are Do You Want To Build A Snowman which only reached 26 and Clarity which only reached 27. Both have certifications for 200,000 copies according to Wikipedia.
There are always loads of songs which stay a long time outside the top 40 without entering, last year, it was Go by The Chemical Brothers, I don't know how many that sold though. This post has been edited by TheSnake: May 30 2016, 06:39 PM |

The Right Song did enter the top 40 for a solitary week.
As 'Let It Go' has been mentioned I'm sure the Demi Lovato version is one of the highest sellers to miss the top 40? |

I just remembered TRS did enter for one week. Stopped on a big run by streaming. There were loads of dubstep songs which spent a long time outside the top 40 if i remember in 2011 and 12, Bonfire by Knife Party and the Nero and Skrillexremix of MONSTA's Holdin On and Wild For the Night by ASAP Rocky and Skrillex. Speaking of dubstep songs Bangarang only peaked at 24 and sold 400,000 copies. This post has been edited by TheSnake: May 30 2016, 06:52 PM |

Back in the physical era “Over The Rainbow” by Eva Cassidy used to be the biggest selling single that never went Top 40.
It first charted in 1999 at #138, entered the Top 100 for the first time in February 2001 at 88 and eventually made #42 in May spending a total of 36 consecutive weeks in the Top 200. I think it is “Summer Of '69” which has sold over 500K. |

This is the list of singles that have been certified Platinum despite missing the Top 10:
Adele - Set Fire to the Rain (#11) Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? (#11) Birdy - Skinny Love (#17) Bruno Mars - Marry You (#11) Christina Perri - A Thousand Years (#11) DJ Fresh - Gold Dust (#22) Disclosure ft. Sam Smith - Latch (#11) Ed Sheeran - I See Fire (#13) Ed Sheeran - Photograph (#15) Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks (#18) Florence & the Machine - Dog Days Are Over (#23) Idina Menzel - Let It Go (#11) Imagine Dragons - Demons (#13) Imagine Dragons - Radioactive (#12) Jason Mraz - I Won't Give Up (#11) Jason Mraz - I'm Yours (#11) Jay Z & Linkin Park - Numb/Encore (#14) Lady Antebellum - Need You Now (#15) Mumford & Sons - I Will Wait (#12) Of Monsters & Men - Little Talks (#13) Train - Hey, Soul Sisters (#18) There's not question that Idina Menzel's 'Let It Go' is the best seller not to reach the Top 10. In regards to the best seller not to reach the Top 20 but make the Top 30, 'Dog Days Are Over' would be the answer if you went off the list above. However, if you combine all editions of 'Sweet Home Alabama' and 'Free Bird' by Lynyrd Skynyrd (I believe the two songs were originally released as an EP together before charting separately in years prior, or something like that), that has sold well over 700k. Pretty sure Bryan Adams' 'Summer of 69' has sold about/approaching/over 600k despite never reaching the Top 40 and I'm sure that's a record. It's also worth pointing out that the likes of 'Eye of the Tiger', 'Sweet Child O' Mine' and 'Livin' on a Prayer' have racked up huge downloads and streams despite very low peaks in the download era (although, of course, all reached higher in the charts on original release). All three of those songs have passed 600k in downloads and streams, not including their original physical sales. |
