A year after the original album was released, looking back on the year Gaga has had with the album is quite spectacular. Globe-stopping performances, tender moments of heart break, eye-opening documentaries, wild music videos and everything in between, it's been an explosive year!
Over the next short while (I promise it will be short too - mass posting ahead so KEEP UP), I will be reliving every key significant moment of the era. Please feel free to comment as we go on what you enjoyed or didn't enjoy.
This will be very thorough so STICK WITH IT PLEASE xo

1. Perfect Illusion single reveal
On 6th September 2016 after several teaser posts previously, Gaga took to Instagram and Twitter to post the delightfully colourful single reveal of first new music from the era. The song was to be called 'Perfect Illusion' and it was set to be released on September 9th. The hype began...
How did you feel when she announced the new single (before you heard it?). Isn't it the best feeling EVER?
2. Perfect Illusion single release
And it DROPPED. With a Radio 1 premiere and chat with the star, the song was unleashed. Totally different to what she had released and a video that divided the masses it seemed Gaga meant business and the Joanne era was well and truly underway.

US Billboard Hot 100 15
Can we relive the fake gaga song too x
I remember still being so excited about PI, I listened to it like 50 times a day when it came out, it still slays!
3. Gaga performs Dive Bar Tour
Gaga went on to reveal several other songs that were to feature on the new album. She performed Million Reasons, A-YO, Sinner's Prayer, and Joanne in Nashville, New York, and Los Angeles. She requested that we just call her "Joanne"...
Loved those Dive Bar gigs, great way to introduce Joanne, wasn't sure about some songs though at first listen
4. Million Reasons vs A-Yo
Both released as promo singles. One went on to absolutely SMASH the other was A-Yo. The entire confusion of what the second single would be was VERY reminiscent of Do What U Want vs Venus, but in both cases the correct choice was eventually decided. Both promo singles showed more of what the album had to offer and the album was heating up and just about ready to drop.
Which promo single were you rooting for at the time? I remember being ADAMANT that she should scrap A-Yo and continue with MR but at the time everyone was confused with what was to happen :')
I actually thought both of them were good but Million Reasons was the stronger single all around. It was the perfect release for the season and its impact was augmented by the Super Bowl so the right decision was made.
I was at the FOREFRONT of the fan argument, INSISTING that Million Reasons get released and Ayo get the messy Gypsy treatment. I always knew it would be the biggest smash on the album.
Million Reasons is a future classic, glad it became such a hit after the SB
5. Joanne album release
On October 21st 2016 following on from these promo singles, Gaga eventually released the album but it was not without its messy build up. Firstly amazon.com released 30-second snippets of each song in advance but later disabled them. And then three days prior to the official release date of October 21, the album was mistakenly put up for sale in shops in Belgium, resulting in people posting the album on the internet - Gaga was undergoing treatment for her pains at the time of the leak and it obviously upset her deeply. Despite the mishaps, the album went on to sell well in its first week globally. But that was just the beginning of its chart success...

6. Performance on The Bitter End roof
On the evening of the album release Gaga took to The Bitter End to give fans an exclusive performance of tracks from the album. You can see the passion in her and just how much the album and the music means to her. An understated way of launching the album for her, but it did the trick wonderfully.
The era means world to her however that Angel Down performance is a bit off somehow, she tends to oversing some of her ballads
7. Apple Music commercial
Featuring a clip from A-Yo, Gaga is frantic, fun-loving, sexy and wild in a commercial promoting the album on Apple Music.
Oh had forgotten about this!!
A-Yo has grown a lot since the release, at first I thought it's a bit meh but now loving it
8. Gaga performs Million Reasons and A-Yo on SNL
THE VOCALS.
THE MOVES.
YAASS that A-Yo performance is everything!
MR she has done better since
9. Gaga takes part in Carpool Karaoke and performs on The Late Late Show
Iconic. The carpool karaoke took the internet by storm and rightfully so.
YESSS BOTH ARE ICONIC <3
10. Gaga absolutely ANNIHILATING the Victoria's Secret's Fashion Show <3
AND BEST OF ALL (one of the best moments of the entire era):
A MOMENT OF LIFE <3 <3
LE.GEN.DARY <3
11. Gaga promotes Million Reasons! AMAs and X Factor performances.
I much prefer the AMAs performance. Her vocals are a little forced (and her facial expressions) on XF make it the weaker of the two. AMAs one is just stunning though.
That X Factor performance is pretty awful by her standards tbh. The dress is gorgeous though.
12. Million Reasons video is released
The campaign continued and Gaga gave us an early Christmas present on the 14th December. The music video, which is a continuation of the Perfect Illusion video, shows Gaga's most refined and simple video to date. The video tells not of a traditional love story, but of Gaga's love for her team and her sister. It's a cute twist and not a typical narrative but the substance of the video (or lack of it) does leave to very little replay-ability.
I disagree, I LOVE the MR video, been watching it on a monthly basis since it came out. So touching!
The story in MR can be transferred to several situations in lives, family, friends, religion, loneliness, relationship. It's so UNIVERSAL, adore it so much!
WE HAVE SO MUCH MORE TO COME. Resuming soon ~
13. SUPERBOWL.
Needs no introduction.
With many ranking it among the top Super Bowl halftime performances in history the show features a celebration of the LGBT community, the use of a swarm of lighting-equipped drones for a pre-recorded intro scene, and perceived political undertones. With 117.5 million television viewers, the Super Bowl LI halftime show was the second-most-watched Super Bowl halftime show and the NFL has claimed, based on a composite of television, digital, and social media viewership, that the Super Bowl LI halftime show was the "most-watched musical event of all-time".
A TRUE MOMENT. Perhaps the biggest of Gaga's entire career to date?
The Super Bowl performance definitely feels like THE iconic moment of this era for me such a showstopping medley with a great replayability factor. It was wonderful of Gaga to take us on a journey back to her older hits after switching it up with 'Joanne', because as much as I do enjoy the album, most of her utmost highlights come from The Fame/Monster and Born This Way albums for me <3 it was amazing to see her as such a talking point again amongst the general public *.*
I still watch the halftime show at least once a month. It's BEYOND iconic <3
The Super Bowl is her greatest live moment. It really was everything. After some people wrote her off after Joanne came out (PopGa is no more!!) there she was, giving the biggest pop performance of her career, with an amazing stage, fantastic choreo, great outfits and LIVE vocals.
I was genuinely in utter awe when I watched it live. It was more than I expected and I felt the biggest swell of absolute pride at what she'd just done.
She absolutely, no doubt about it, nailed it and cemented her reputation as a force of nature when it comes to live performance ability.

14. John Wayne music video gets a surprise release
Pretty much straight after the hype of the Superbowl, Gaga dropped a surprise music video for non-single John Wayne. Continuing from the MR video, but with a zany, fun-filled and high-octane approach, it's Gaga visuals at their best. Directed by genius Jonas Åkerlund, the video attempts to show how reckless love can be. Reminiscent of a more BTW/Fame era Gaga, the video is fantastic, it's just a shame the song didn't get a full push in the wake of this surprise drop.
Incredible visuals. Her best video since the 'Born This Way' era! 'John Wayne' is one of my favourite songs from 'Joanne' too so a great package on the whole. <3
The song is average Gaga but love the video, great sense of humour and colors
15. Performance at the Grammys with Metallica
It happened. We support her doing something different. And we'll never discuss it again. xx
ONLY LEGENDS go to Grammys to mess like that
16. Oh. My. Gaga! Season premiere of RuPaul's Drag Race season 9
Lady Gaga dropped by to meet the 13 new queens competing to become America's Next Drag Superstar. The contestants were tasked with making a runway look adapting a previous, iconic Gaga outfits.
I'd never watched an episode of Drag Race before this, but I had to for the Queen... and i've since become a huge fan of the show LEGENDS ONLY.
17. COACHELLA
Gaga headlined the festival with soft piano moments, huge choreography and soaring vocals. Plus a surprise...
18. The Cure surprise release
After its premiere at Coachella, Gaga then released the dancehall inspired beauty 'The Cure'. Created as a response to travesties across the world, the song also seems to have personal implications with the illness Gaga is battling through and the health (and eventual passing) of her best friend. Multi-layered in meaning, the song charted top 10 in several countries, became a top 20 hit in the UK and peaked just inside the top 40 in the US. Another radio friendly song for Gaga, it seems like the public were cured and were continuing to embrace Gaga back in their hearts. Who knows if it's to remain a standalone single or part of a bigger project, but it did enough to fix us with its beauty.
VERY LATE TO WHAT IS AN AMAZING THREAD
the superbowl performance really is EVERYTHING. i don't think i've ever been so proud of someone i stan before, an absolute moment of pure perfection
I wasn't impressed by the Coachella performance but she was in severe pain at that time. You can see it the way the dancers carry her a lot during the show :/
The Cure is still a bop!
19. Five Foot Two
Doesn't really need an introduction. Perhaps the most revealing moment of Gaga's entire career, the enigma popstar is (almost) no more. The film documents Gaga before the release of Joanne and the build up to her epic Superbowl performance. It had a fantastic response from critics, fans and naysayers and revealed a completely new side to the star.
Five foot two definitely made me look at her in a completely different light. <3
What a document!! One of the best movies this year
The tour continues to slay, and new music video coming too. Era not over yet !! Stay Joanne <3
