BuzzJack Music Forum _ Katy Perry _ Would you change any of Katy's single choices?

Posted by: Josh. Sep 19 2016, 06:24 PM

I think it's pretty much agreed that Katy always picks the majority of her best tracks as singles but is there anything you would change about her eras? I've made a few tweaks below for my choices.

ONE OF THE BOYS
I Kissed a Girl
Hot N Cold
Waking Up In Vegas
One of the Boys
If You Can Afford Me

TEENAGE DREAM
California Gurls
Teenage Dream
Firework
ET
Last Friday Night (TGIF)
Hummingbird Heartbeat
The One That Got Away
---------
Part of Me
Wide Awake

PRISM
Roar
Dark Horse
Walking On Air
Unconditionally
Legendary Lovers

Honestly I think the first two eras were perfect (as much as I'm not here for Hot N Cold), but I'd change Prism to be like this:

1. Roar
2. Dark Horse
3. Walking On Air
4. Unconditionally
5. Birthday (this was a decent sized hit even if it wasn't massive)

Thinking of You: switch with I'm Still Breathing (maybe, I'm not too keen on that album)
The One That Got Away: switch with Not Like The Movies
Part of Me: switch with Peacock
Birthday: switch with Walking On Air

why was the one that got away ever released tbh

I feel offended at this TOTGA hate mellow.gif

(also Peacock would never have been a hit imo, and Part of Me was a #1 on both sides of the pond)

This is How We Do did really well considering Birthday and Unconditionally had done badly before it. It got nowhere near as much support as those two, and would have been a much bigger hit had it been released earlier.

I'd say for Prism:
Roar
Walking On Air
Dark Horse
This is How We Do
Legendary Lovers

The One That Gor Away BUT!! it was a U.s no.1 helping her record so no complaints even if it was ://

Also Screeching Of You, which gave Pink the whole idea of Screech in the first place!! Awful awful.

Unconditionally did its job of selling the album and letting Roar settle down before Dark Horse, although Dark Horse at Halloween!!!

Also This is How We Do was lol as a single. It shoulda been EOA or Legendary Lovers with a rap feature.

Why would you wait to release the album after 3 big singles? That would really hurt the album sales.

Except that it was not a US no. 1. It was the single that broke her record streak.

The One That Got Away is her absolute BEST.

Yah makes no sense to wait, especially with her big profilr and good brand.

Omg really?! laugh.gif Ehy was it released!!! As bad a decision, welll nearly, as How Do You Do which was album filler.

Unconditionally is the worst song of the last ten years. And it's only because Katy's voice is so grating on it. Sometimes she sings amazing (Rise), but her voice on 'Unconditionally'... it makes me want to fight somebody.

^ it's also such a NONE EVENT

I genuinely think Birthday would have been a hit if they got the video right (Sugar but with birthday parties) and waited a little longer for Dark Horse to die.

Yas it is awful and she is Mini Screech on it, just as she was Proto Screech on Thinking of You, but it sold the album.

The video was also better than the song.

I am still surprised Birthday flopped. It shoulda followed WOA and LL as a single though to close off the campaign.

I love 'Unconditionally' too 👀

Birthday & TIHWD were 2 tragic choices. Walking On Air & Legendary Lovers would both do much, much better and are much better songs also.

Posted by: skankhunt42 Sep 30 2016, 11:57 PM

I still think she wanted the flops and didn't release the 2 hits to move onto next era without being overexposed.

Ew at this Uncondictionally and Thinking Of You Hate sad.gif

For Prisim Id change it too

1. Roar
2. Dark Horse feat Juicy J
ALBUM RELEASE
3. Walking On Air
4. Unconditionally or By The Grace Of God
5. Birthday

Posted by: skankhunt42 Oct 1 2016, 05:33 AM

That's ... really floppy!!! laugh.gif

With ha profile at the time, One huge hit is needed only before the album. Not two. BTW and Unconditionally would flop, esp in that singles order.

Tragiiic.

Esprcially as Yhinking of You is face-punch rage-inducing Proto Screech!!

Posted by: Tyler Oct 1 2016, 07:07 AM

1. Roar (I hate it but it's a smash)
2. Dark Horse
3. Legendary Lovers
4. Walking On Air
5. This Is How We Do OR Birthday

Posted by: skankhunt42 Oct 1 2016, 08:13 AM

Tyler's is mostly correct but Dark Horse and Roar were so huuuge there needed to be a pause between them.

Posted by: mr_pmt Oct 1 2016, 08:43 AM

The big mistake I can think of is not factoring in 'Walking On Air' somewhere, I'd have probably had it following 'Dark Horse'.

I did really think before PRISM that the big thing she had going for her is that her team always managed to get the single choices spot on and it kept her at the top of her game.

One Of The Boys Era

I Kissed A Girl
Hot N' Cold
If You Can Afford Me
Waking Up In Vegas

Wouldn't change much, the first 2 singles were perfect and 'WUIV' was a fantastic ending to the era, but I would change 'TOY' with 'IYCAM', as to be honest the former just wasn't a very good song and it's chart performance proved that, maybe it would have worked better as a promo single, something to sell the album instead of being an actual single, which just didn't work at all and nearly ruined her career before it started. If the latter got released, then it would have definitely performed better and created more hype for 'WUIV' and given that a better chart position in the UK at least.

Teenage Dream Era

California Gurls
Teenage Dream
Firework
E.T.
Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)
The One That Got Away
Part Of Me
Wide Awake
Hummingbird Heartbeat

Again would change very little for this era, it was perfect as it was, just thought it would have been nice if 'HH' would have got released, but that's more of a personal choice on my part, to be honest I doubt it would have been a smash hit, considering that it would have been the 9th single from an already fantastic era, but it would have been nice to see a colourful music video and it would have been interesting to see how it would have performed, I'd predict top 10 in the USA and top 20 UK.

Prism Era

Roar
Unconditionally
Dark Horse
Waking On Air
Birthday,
Legendary Lovers

Now this is the era that would have the most changes, firstly 'Unconditionally' was a decent choice, but came a tad too soon, especially following something as massive as 'Roar', and was just a hard act to follow, even if 'DH' got released 2nd, yeah it would have been a smash, but I just feel it would have been too much too soon. Again 'Birthday' was a good song and a definite standout on the album, but releasing it after 'DH' was a huge mistake, if 'Walking On Air' was released instead, then it would have sustained more momentum and driven more sales instead of basically flatlining. 'Birthday' would have worked better as the 5th single and with a better music video, might have performed slightly better. Then scrap 'This Is How We Do' altogether, because that just didn't work at all and didn't do anything for the album at all, the era was dead by this point. Personally then following 'WOA' & 'Birthday', release 'Legendary Lovers' in a remixed form with a rapper, featuring Drake as it was rumoured at one point, now that would have definitely created more interest and definitely ended the era on more of a high.
