After the Season 3 abortion I'll be taking a pass on this series. Once they wrap this show up I may go back and watch... But Season 3 was just awful.
Feel free to flag me down if this turns out to actually be good this season.

It’s funny how much of a disconnect there is between critical reviews and audience reaction when it comes to Riverdale Season 3. The season is certified fresh with 84% on Rotten Tomatoes (and every episode was positively received). Whereas the audience score is 48% rotten... even that feels generous imo.

Season 3 was just extremely heavy going! The quality of the writing was all over the place, to say the least (barely anything that leaves the lips of these characters sounds like anything an actual human being would say, or how teens really interact with each other lol... Veronica in particular is dreadfully written). The Gargoyle King was definitely one of the most bizarre plots I’ve ever watched, but sadly not enjoyably so. Archie’s boxing plot was incredibly boring, but hey, it was an excuse for him to be constantly shirtless. kink.gif I don’t think the speakeasy set should ever have happened, it doesn’t ring true and it seriously ages these characters that are meant to be 17. The Farm storyline took far, far too long to get going.

I definitely think a big reason why Riverdale doesn’t work well is because it’s stretched out over 22 episode seasons. Nothing in Season 3 was compelling enough to last that long. I feel like it could very easily have been condensed into 13 episodes... 16 at a push.

It’s funny, even the actors and actresses can’t hide their bewilderment about their own show (and in Lili’s case it seems to border on disdain laugh.gif )

Still, I kind of feel like... I’ve made it this far, so let’s give Season 4 a go. drama.gif I’m probably a clown to be hopeful for much improvement. I’d really appreciate Riverdale going back to its roots, return to being the melodramatic teen drama that was Season 1.

Yeah I think I'll be giving this a pass I found Series 3 such hard work to watch ended up stopping watching for weeks then going back to it then stopping. The only decent thing was Archie being shirtless all the time wub.gif

Really excited for this, and I’ll probably be crying at the Luke tribute. Although after that I assume we’ll be back to the same old stuff kink.gif

I saw it a couple hours ago and this was one of the most refreshing episodes after the wave of absurdity that rushed through S2 and S3. It's v. reminiscent of Glee's tribute to Cory Monteith.

Also peep Shannen Doherty (aka Brenda from 90210!!!) guest starring to pay respects heart.gif heart.gif heart.gif

I thought they did a very good job with Luke's death. I honestly expected for them to make it into an arch on the show and I would have been highly disappointed, and I almost turned off when they started to go down the revenge route but they solved for that quickly.

Good job. I'll read this thread to understand the "theme" this year, but I'm not anticipating being impressed or tuning in. I just wanted to see how they'd handle Luke's death.

Honestly the best episode in such a long time. heart.gif A very touching tribute to Luke.

I remain intrigued but cautious about where they'll go with this season though!!

I’m actually glad it came to end and so quickly too! These 3 episodes of Farm storyline have been better than the entire 3rd season laugh.gif

Agreed! I thought I was watching some strange comedy series when I saw him standing there in that suit and the whole idea of the rocket surfaced wtf rotf.gif

I must admit though that this season so far is 100x better than season 3. The problem with the Black Hood / Gargoyle King storylines was always that it really seemed like they were just making it up as they went along. But I'm actually really enjoying the episodes and I think (emphasis on 'think' x) they've got a clear idea of where they're going with it this time!

I'm finding Riverdale to be tedious again, after thinking that the earlier episodes of Season 4 were decent. sad.gif

Veronica and Cheryl's rum storyline is... well, it's happening, I guess? Really boring and it's yet another plot where we have to suspend all belief that these are two 17 years old girls. :')

The various other storylines are okay I suppose, but not overly compelling. It's hard to particularly care about Archie's Uncle Frank when he's such a new character (was he even referenced in past seasons?).

Idk, I'm asking myself why I'm still watching and I don't think there's a solid enough reason other than having seen 68 episodes and feeling like I need to see where it goes. Archie's even been keeping his shirt on recently, rude. x

I’ve stopped watching for now, might return to it at some point but it’s not enjoyable? Tedious is definitely the right word Jay

Honestly with the current writing Jughead's "death" is a Catch-22. Riverdale as a show just can't win with the fans. Him faking his death was painfully obvious since the season 3 finale and even though it was poorly executed, the mystery novel motif turned this into a good plot device. If they actually killed Jughead off it would turn off a lot of fans, some because they worship Cole Sprouse and have been since the Suite Life days and others because they'll say "they rushed this to make it more edgy". Plus the shoehorning of Jughead actually makes sense this time considering the central plot revolves around him, so his plots aren't suffocating the other core 4 plots.

I'm used to it considering CW shows have had a tendency to do this with varying degrees of success.

I'm watching this off the side of my desk again, still as silly as ever.
I wish they'd just strip this show back and give us a simple, enjoyable storyline.
No fake tickle porn, odd private school drama, farm nonsense and fake deaths.

They have great bones with a hot cast that can pull out something great. The fact they continue down the path with these disastrous storylines is beyond me.

Season 5 starts January 21st.
Fangs will a be a regular character this series and we will also be introduced to Tabitha Tate (Pop Tate's granddaughter).

I dropped the ball with this but picked it up again just before Christmas. Season 4 definitely got better towards the end.
