Ooh nice to see Complicated in here! I've not heard too much of the original but been listening a lot to the VIZE remix (actually listening to the original now it's almost identical to the remix interestingly enough!) C'est La Vie is sounding pretty nice as well.

26 The Kid LAROI - ALWAYS DO | 2-1-3-8-18-20-29-16-… The release of F*CK LOVE (SAVAGE) left me intrigued. Would the re-issue of my favourite album of the year live up to the original tracks? Would the new tracks justify their addition? Quickly I realised it was very much worth it, and ALWAYS DO was the song that spearheaded my love of the new tracks. SO DONE had come out a couple of weeks before so excluding that one, ALWAYS DO made the biggest impact. With five of the seven new tracks reaching my top 10 (plus NEED YOU MOST climbing back in, and TRAGIC making it 6/7 a week later), ALWAYS DO was the top track that I hadn't already heard before, initially lagging behind SO DONE but overtaking a week later to become Laroi's third #1 single. The track is one of the most important in the story of his break-up, because it's a true admission of everything wrong that he did - "said I wouldn't drink but I did same day, shit I lied to your face like I always do." It's an insight into how toxic the relationship had been on both sides and I'd argue this song actually helps to understand the emotions felt in breakthrough hit WITHOUT YOU more clearly. End of Year History 2020 | 000 | NEED YOU MOST (So Sick) 2020 | 000 | SELFISH 2020 | 000 | SO DONE 2020 | 000 | WITHOUT YOU 2020 | 026 | ALWAYS DO 2020 | 028 | GO (The Kid LAROI & Juice WRLD) 2020 | 033 | WRONG (feat. Falling of course came out on Fine Line at the end of 2019, and placed #161 in my EOY chart that year. 2020 saw it promoted to a single, and it reached a new peak of #5, notching up a very impressive chart run in full. Ranking it gets that bit tougher when I first fell in love with the track in 2019, though! I've tried to base this only on 2020 as a result, so perhaps it's not truly indicative of the song as a whole. Nonetheless, Falling is a true beauty of a song. Its production is sparse, leaving Harry's voice and the piano to do most of the work, and it's all the better for it. Harry's at his best, he sounds amazing and the emotion in his voice is truly heartwrenching. The music video is one of the best of 2020 too, so stunning, as was the BRITs performance. Hey Joseph! Great chart and I love format!
Sad to see Kylie & Physical go but rooting for these songs: Bastiaan & jens feat. Wiktoria - Someone Else Cardi B feat. Megan Thee Stallion - WAP Conan Gray - Wish You Were Sober Doja Cat - Say So Dua Lipa feat. DaBaby - Levitating FELIX SANDMAN - BOYS WITH EMOTIONS Isac Elliot - Weekend Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande - Rain On Me The Pussycat Dolls - React Why Don't We - Fallin' (Adrenaline) Not so secretly hoping Weekend wins or in the very least places top 10! Haven't checked out The Kid Laroi yet, always assumed he made hip hop so I just kinda sidelined him but now I'm thinking I may be missing out. Will be watching which one of his songs places highest for you and may check it out then! |

Thanks so much!! Laroi's music is generally hip-hop but the fact it appeals to me is pretty good going for that genre! There's plenty of catchy hooks and emotive tracks, and there's less hip-hop tracks to be heard as well!

24 Mishaal feat. Powfu - Friends | 3-2-2-4-1-2-11-14-19-28-35-x I said earlier that I thought Powfu would probably end up a one-hit wonder in my chart. It didn't end up taking him long at all to score a second hit in the end, though. Saudi Arabian singer Mishaal enlisted Powfu for his track Friends, a track that really wormed its way into my affections with an irresistible chorus. It's most definitely my favourite Mishaal track to date, I didn't like his immediate follow-ups, but he eventually scored a second top 5 hit with Peddle Bike. Powfu's verse on the track is also brilliant, and it earned him a second #1 in a row. I also sent the track to BJSC, where it unfortunately but unsurprisingly failed to qualify. Your loss guys x End of Year History Mishaal 2020 | 024 | Friends (feat. They announced in January, having released a new single every month in 2019, that they were taking time off social media to create their new album. Fast forward to September and the lead single finally arrives. Fallin', later retitled Fallin' (Adrenaline), was quite the change in direction. Produced by member Daniel Seavey, with instruments played by the group themselves for a change. That's before we get to the Black Skinhead sample...! It all makes for an amazing package though, a huge singalong chorus and it paid off - Fallin' (Adrenaline) became Why Don't We's first top 40 hit on the Hot 100, and twelfth #1 in my chart, just one behind The Vamps' record! 22 Sista Prod feat. Powfu, Alec Benjamin & Rxseboy - Eyes Blue Like the Atlantic, Pt. 2 | 3-7-12-13-11-14-17-21-22-26-29-35-x As far as my chart goes, this song registers as a pretty big name collaboration. I actually know pretty much nothing about who Sista Prod is - he's an Italian producer but that's about it. His original version of Eyes Blue Like the Atlantic featured Subvrbs was a TikTok hit, the vibe being very chilled out while the same lyric was repeated through the song - "eyes blue like the Atlantic and I'm going down like the Titanic." This version is technically more of a sample and I'm not sure how much Sista Prod actually had to do with it, but Sarcastic Sounds produced it and worked with frequent collaborators Powfu and Rxseboy on the track initially. They approached Alec Benjamin about adding a verse and the result was this superb new version of the track - a big improvement on the original! I found out about its existence via Alec's mailing list and it won me over on first play. It unfortunately lost out on the #1 behind the power duo of NEED YOU MOST (So Sick) and WAP, both of which are still to come so not an unfair outcome, but Eyes Blue was a big hit nonetheless! Sista Prod and Rxseboy have no songs left, but Powfu and Alec have one more each. End of Year History Sista Prod 2020 | 022 | Eyes Blue Like the Atlantic, Pt. 2 (feat. Powfu, Alec Benjamin & Rxseboy) Powfu 2020 | 000 | death bed (coffee for your head) [feat. beabadoobee] 2020 | 022 | Eyes Blue Like the Atlantic, Pt. 2 (Sista Prod feat. Powfu, Rxseboy & Sarcastic Sounds) 21 Conan Gray - Wish You Were Sober | 8-1-2-3-4-8-13-16-23-32-x The chart history below looks a bit strange for Conan Gray. Maniac's #69 position last year felt reasonable at the time, but the song had a whole new lease of life in 2020, re-entering the top 10 and becoming the longest running #4 hit in my chart's history. However, it peaked in 2019 so I opted not to allow it in for a second year. Wish You Were Sober therefore registers as by far his highest EOY position to date, and it figures - it was his first #1, after all. Though I'd say I prefer Maniac, I still adore Wish You Were Sober. It's got a catchy, singalong chorus and lyrics that are surely relatable to most young people...! Conan's songwriting skills are evident and this one even won the approval of Taylor Swift! It's still his only #1 in my chart, though I suspect his second album will produce some big hits when the time comes. 20 Isac Elliot - Weekend | 1-3-10-11-12-20-24-27-27-37-x When New Way Home came out as budding Finnish popstar Isac Elliot's debut single in 2013, I don't think I'd ever have expected him to still be delivering in 2020, let alone releasing songs that are worthy of being among his very best. In fact, I think I'd say Weekend is in his top three tracks, alongside New Way Home itself and my top fave Mouth to Mouth. Weekend slots in nicely with Isac's dance-pop material but has an added edge to it, brought about by maturity from the now 20 year old and those pulsating synths running through the chorus. Weekend became Isac's third #1, and secured him an eighth consecutive year of top 10 hits (every year from debut, a stat he's now extended to nine years with my current #1 single Waving at Cars). I also sent it to BJSC, and against the odds, Weekend gave me my joint highest position ever (2nd!) and highest points total in over eight years of taking part. Not only did this one connect with me, it connected with so many others too! Now it's given Isac his best EOY position since New Way Home. Will 2021 be the year he finally gets an EOY top 10? End of Year History 2013 | 014 | New Way Home 2013 | 077 | Dream Big 2013 | 086 | A.N.G.E.L 2014 | 083 | Just Can't Let Her Go 2014 | 162 | Tired of Missing You 2015 | 055 | Lipstick (feat. Match in the Rain is the most recent of them. The seventh single from a ten track album (!), Match in the Rain came out alongside parent album These Two Windows. Before seeing the music video, Match was already the highlight of the new songs, and I preferred it to most of the songs I already knew too. The production gives the song an added edge that Alec doesn't usually have in his music, contrasting with his typically innocent and youthful vocal and strong lyricism. That chorus is just too good to resist, too - "the clouds are rolling in, I feel you drifting away and though my intuition tells me that it's too late, that in these conditions tryna bring back the flame is like tryna light a match in the rain." A true gem and one of his best songs yet! (it diving out from #25 looks so weird but I've checked back to see it was "Laroi week" that did it, that figures x) End of Year History 2016 | 224 | End of the Summer 2017 | 067 | I Built a Friend 2018 | 010 | Let Me Down Slowly 2018 | 073 | 1994 2018 | 077 | Outrunning Karma 2018 | 100 | If We Have Each Other 2018 | 117 | Steve 2018 | 194 | Annabelle's Homework 2018 | 205 | Water Fountain 2019 | 008 | Must Have Been the Wind 2019 | 018 | Mind Is a Prison 2019 | 022 | Jesus in LA 2020 | 019 | Match in the Rain 2020 | 022 | Eyes Blue Like the Atlantic, Pt. 2 (Sista Prod feat. 18 Dua Lipa feat. DaBaby - Levitating | 4-3-3-7-9-13-14-20-23-30-33-38-20-… I feel like the concept of an unlucky #2 hit is discussed quite a lot, but Levitating is probably the most unlucky #3 hit for a while in my chart (the only other one that sticks out in my mind is my longest running #3 hit, Another Love by Tom Odell, which was more of a slow burner with never quite enough steam for the #1 spot). Levitating got stuck behind two bigger hits - Boy In Space's Therapy and Fin Argus' Clouds, and though the tracks swapped in the second week, Levitating remained at #3! In many weeks, the impact of Levitating at #3 would've been enough. It's strange to think, though, because the song's been a bit of a rollercoaster. I loved the album version and was so excited by the news of a Madonna and Missy Elliott version - only to find it to be the biggest disappointment of the year. Amazingly, it was the DaBaby mix that captured me more, thanks to a fun guest verse with some great lyrics - "left foot, right foot levitating, popstars, Dua Lipa with DaBaby." The production of the song is just so euphoric and Dua sounds amazing, and it's become firmly my favourite Future Nostalgia track - and my favourite (lead artist) Dua single overall! Having said all that, it's actually not the highest #3 hit in the countdown, there's one more but I'd say this was much less lucky! End of Year History Dua Lipa 2016 | 046 | Blow Your Mind (Mwah) 2016 | 061 | Hotter Than Hell 2016 | 140 | Be the One 2017 | 010 | Scared to Be Lonely (Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa) 2017 | 028 | New Rules 2017 | 147 | No Lie (Sean Paul feat. React therefore had no previous chart runs to be compared to, but a lot of hype to live up to. React sounded AMAZING in the clip they performed as part of their comeback medley on The X Factor in 2019. Then... silence. It all went far too quiet and it took AGES for the song to come. I kept rewatching the clip and my excitement built. Finally, React drops - the same day as Boy In Space's Caroline, another song I was anticipating hugely. Caroline won the battle AND the war (it's still to come), but React didn't do badly at all - it's the highest #2 hit of the year and second highest non-#1. More importantly, I'd say it actually lived up to expectations - a big achievement in itself, before you consider the excellent video and the excitement around its surprisingly strong chart performance! Now for the tour - please go away covid x End of Year History 2020 | 017 | React |

16 Harry Styles - Watermelon Sugar | 1-2-2-2-4-8-9-12-17-24-24-31-31-30-39-29-29-38-38-x-40-33-4-6-11-15-19-23-26-26-23-17-23-35-34-37-40-x There's no clearer example of how a song split between two years can be very difficult to rank! Watermelon Sugar reached its #1 peak in 2019 as soon as it was released, and though most of its initial top 10 run happened in 2019, most of its top 40 weeks happened this year, even without the re-entry as a result of its single push. I'm so pleased Watermelon Sugar was finally released as a single, because it would've felt wrong to see it snubbed from his discography particularly after it was such a hit first time round. I really didn't expect it to be much of a hit again, so to see it peak at #4 in the UK and #1 in the US was incredible and so richly deserved, and now it's on track to be the biggest 1D-related single full stop...! In my EOY, Watermelon Sugar reached #20 last year, and now #16 a second time - the only track to have ever made my EOY top 20 twice, its single push deeming it eligible a second time. As to where it would appear if my adoration all occurred within one year, it's hard to say, but I think it could easily have ended up being a huge contender for the top. Swedish singer/songwriter Ulrik Munther has been a regular in my chart since 2013, with, before 2020, six #1s to his name. 2019 was a pretty quiet year for Ulrik, with no new tracks released, so Gloom. was the follow-up single to 2018's Are You Alright? EP. Gloom. would actually work pretty well on that EP - it serves really nicely as a follow-up in particular to lead single Before, which reached #2 and, similarly, #15 in my EOY. The weekly chart peak of Gloom. did one better, though, becoming Ulrik's seventh #1 and his first in two and a half years. It's well-deserved for a special track like this, lyrically uplifting despite a sombre tone, and of course, Ulrik's vocal sounds divine. 14 The Kid LAROI - SELFISH | 6-3-4-6-11-14-15-25-27-27-27-32-37-37-23-21-30-39-x-30-… The highest non-#1 single this year manages to place as high as #14! Not quite as high as last year, where Bea Miller's it's not u it's me placed at #5 and Bodin's So Good at #9, though SELFISH's achievement is still pretty huge. Though the lines are blurred with Laroi's career at times between what is and isn't a single - Wikipedia doesn't consider this one, nor several other tracks that also got videos, but video-less NEED YOU MOST (So Sick) is counted as one - SELFISH is also officially the highest non-single in the countdown. If we compare to last year, it's a huge improvement on the #40 placing of last year's highest non-single, which was Greyson Chance's black on black. SELFISH is quite a notable track in Laroi's F*CK LOVE narrative. It's the last track on the standard mixtape, summarising how hurt Laroi feels by his ex and promising revenge - "imma be savage." His next release was the SAVAGE re-issue, so he certainly delivered on his promise. It's a powerful closing track and still excellent in isolation as well. That video too - one of the most impactful of the year! The Melodifestivalen entry didn't perform quite as well in its heat, making it to "andra chansen" (second chance) rather than going direct to the final, but there was a silver lining. Songs that go direct don't get released on digital platforms until all heats have aired (and Felix was in heat 1 of 4!), so we got BOYS WITH EMOTIONS three weeks earlier than expected. The track soared to the top of my chart, beating stiff competition from Dua Lipa's Physical to become Felix's first solo #1. Of course, Felix topped the chart twice as a member of FO&O, including on their group Melfest entry Gotta Thing About You (EOY #7, 2017). Fellow FO&O member Oscar Enestad topped last year's EOY with his own Melfest song I Love It, so Felix hasn't quite managed that feat, but nonetheless it's by far his best EOY position to date! 12 Boy In Space & NOTD - Therapy | 6-1-2-6-8-12-13-19-22-26-29-30-18-… Just losing out on two appearances in the top 10, Swedish singer Boy In Space places at #12 with Therapy, his third of three #1s achieved in 2020. The track intrigued me from the start, being a collaboration with production duo NOTD, who had scored a top 10 hit in 2019 with I Miss Myself, one of my favourite tracks from singer HRVY. Therapy lived up to my expectations and more. It's a powerful track about struggling in the aftermath of a break-up, detailing specific feelings in the way Boy In Space does so well. The track debuted at #6 on just one day of availability, climbing to #1 in its first full week, becoming Boy In Space's fourth #1 and NOTD's first. Wiktoria - Someone Else | 37-5-9-9-11-8-1-3-11-18-22-25-31-32-x Sadly just losing out on a top 10 spot is another of my BJSC entries from 2020. I know very little about Danish producer Bastiaan, though he's now scored two hits in my chart so he's doing something right. Someone Else caught my eye more because of the vocalists attached. I know Wiktoria from Melodifestivalen, though I'd never charted her before this track, and of course jens has been one of the rising stars of my chart in the past two years. Someone Else proves to be a triumph on all levels - the production is great and made for a perfect summer anthem, while Wiktoria and jens' vocals blend together expertly! After hanging around my chart for a while, it took advantage of a quiet week to steal a #1 peak, becoming Bastiaan and Wiktoria's first each, and jens' second. Artists: Top 10
1 The Kid LAROI To anyone who's been following this countdown, or pretty much any post of mine over the past six or so months, this won't be a surprise at all. However, a year ago, if you'd have told me a hip-hop artist would be my favourite of the year, I'd have been gobsmacked. I'm not a hater of the genre, but not lots of it is to my taste. Typically, I prefer female rappers to male, though 2020 saw a strong year on both fronts in my chart thanks to the likes of Powfu, DaBaby, AJ Tracey and Young T & Bugsey. Enter Charlton Howard, a seventeen year old Australian singer and rapper who goes by the name The Kid LAROI. This time last year, Laroi had released three songs - quite honestly if you'd have shown me any of these songs and told me how much I'd end up loving his music, I'd never have believed you. His early music laid the groundwork for what's to come but none of it is hugely essential as far as I'm concerned. I didn't actually discover Laroi until the end of July, though. His single GO, with mentor Juice WRLD, had already been a minor hit and his mixtape F*CK LOVE was set to debut top 15 in the chart. Intrigued, I decided to give GO a spin - Juice's material is sometimes good after all. My first impression was that it was quite good, I didn't immediately love it but I liked it enough to listen to some more of his material. Before long I'd played the full mixtape, albeit not in order, and found one song I instantly loved - NEED YOU MOST (So Sick), complete with Ne-Yo sample. Ultimately, I was quite intrigued by Laroi. His vocal is distinctive and unique, almost jarring at times but he uses it well to complement the mood of various songs. His tone on MAYBE is harsh and his vocal performance isn't perfect as he sings "I'm not too good at admitting where I fuck up," but the more reflective SAME THING sees a softer tone. Completed when he was sixteen years old, this is just one element of what makes F*CK LOVE such an impressive body of work. Lyrically, while Laroi doesn't use elaborate metaphors or complex lyrics, he describes his emotions clearly so his audience can relate, and you can hear that he truly means every word he sings. After all, the project is about a break-up, and his ex-girlfriend is heard on actual phone calls used as interludes / "skits" throughout the album, spacing out each section and each set of emotions. I spammed F*CK LOVE so much in its first week - by the end of that, he was already my most played artist of the whole year. NEED YOU MOST became his first #1 in my chart and F*CK LOVE, #1 in the album chart, became the fifth album in my chart's history to see its entire tracklist make my top 40. Music videos for SELFISH, the emotive closer, and WRONG, one of the most fun tracks on a relatively sombre album, helped enhance Laroi's brand as an artist. Jump forward to October, and Laroi's already beginning to tease new music. Naturally, I was excited. SO DONE was released as the lead single from new EP SAVAGE (released as a re-issue of F*CK LOVE, the title taken from a lyric from SELFISH where Laroi says "imma be savage" to get revenge for all the hurt his ex made him feel). I really enjoyed SO DONE, and it became his second #1 when SAVAGE came out. Not only did the original album get a new lease of life from me, but I fell in love with the new tracks too. Re-issues bother me slightly as they either feel disjointed or like a load of rejects, but this was neither. SAVAGE was a direct continuation, lyrically and thematically, and it brought closure on the era. ALWAYS DO is an admittance of mistakes from Laroi himself, FEEL SOMETHING is Laroi's struggle in the aftermath, and F*CK YOU, GOODBYE is about getting up and moving on from something bad. Then, of course, there's Laroi's breakthrough hit WITHOUT YOU, the final track of the whole project where Laroi admits it's time to move on, but he's "scared to be alone" in one of his most emotional tracks so far. It's crazy to think all of this came from a new artist who's still not an adult yet. Laroi's got a clear vision of who he is as an artist already, and he's telling his story from start to finish. Every emotion, every sensation and every memory of a toxic relationship (on both sides). With new music coming this Friday and his first proper album due any time, Laroi's still at the start of what will hopefully be a long and successful career, and I'm truly excited for the day I can experience these tracks live! |

10 Greyson Chance - Dancing Next to Me | 1-3-4-5-8-11-11-12-16-18-24-27-28-31-x-34-30-35-x Appearing in my EOY top 10 two yeas running is Greyson Chance, one of my all-time favourite artists. I spoke a lot about Greyson's comeback story in last year's EOY with his exceptional portraits album, and naturally, my hype was sky high for whatever came next. Boots, released at the end of 2019, was revealed not to be on his next project and Dancing Next to Me was confirmed as the lead. Instantly, I loved the track. It was sexy and dark but also very danceable and fun. It quickly began earning its status as one of Greyson's best songs to date. It became his fifth #1 single, and third within twelve months after a gap of six and a half years between his second and third chart-toppers. I also sent the track to BJSC, my second entry of Greyson's - coming full circle as Running Away was my first ever entry! Though that one failed to qualify, Dancing Next to Me was a redemption arc - it came 10th! I've not quite loved any of his follow-up singles as much as this but Greyson's found a sound that works and it's paying off, he's consistently great and I can't wait for his third album to finally drop this year.
