John and Thady Gosden's three-time Gold Cup winner Stradivarius has been retired to stud.

The eight-year-old, who is owned by Bjorn Nielsen, has also won four Goodwood Cups, three Yorkshire Cups and two Doncaster Cups.

He was a late absentee in the Lonsdale Cup at York last month because of a bruised foot after taking longer than expected to recover.

The son of Sea The Stars retires having won seven Group One races.

He will now join the National Stud as a stallion after winning 20 of his 35 outings and earning nearly £3.5m in prize money.

Tom Scudamore has paid tribute to Grade 1-winning hurdler Adagio, who died after suffering a heart attack on the gallops on Thursday morning.

The five-year-old rose to the top level to land the Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow in January 2021 before finishing second at the Cheltenham Festival and Aintree's Grand National meeting that same season.

The David Pipe-trained gelding was due to run in Saturday's Club Godolphin Cesarewitch for which he was second favourite.

Pipe tweeted: "It is with enormous sadness I have to report that Adagio has suffered a fatal heart attack on the gallops this morning. His owners and everyone at Pond House are beyond heartbroken."

Adagio earned £140,698 in prize-money, winning four of his 13 races and finishing runner-up six times in a career spanning three seasons.

For me Bay Bridge would be the one to follow Baaeed home and therefore the forecast selection. His win at Sandown Park, in May, was extremely noteworthy and think he's the only one of Baaeed's opponents capable of showing a significant amount of improvement. Also, re Adayar, I do fear for him over this distance and feel that he is so, so much better over 12 furlongs.

I think it's an insult that a connection of Emily Upjohn still reckoned she should have won The Oaks; she stumbled badly and nearly unseated Dettori. Also, post the race Dettori and Mr Gosden thought the filly was running out of puff ie 12f stretched her stamina; she pulled too hard in the King George which put paid to her Arc participation.

Great horses get beat. Sea-Bird, Brigadier Gerard, Mill Reef, Nijinsky, El Gran Senor, Dancing Brave, Sea The Stars. It doesn't diminish them.

Plenty of chances for Elliott / Russell at Cheltenham today. Might be worth playing the multiples.

Mick Channon has announced he will retire and hand over his training licence to son Jack at the end of the year.

A week ago, Channon trained a landmark 2,500th domestic Flat winner in Britain in a career dating back to 1989.

A former highly successful footballer for England and Southampton, he trains in the famous West Ilsley Stables, situated just north of Newbury, formerly used by Dick Hern.

His most famous horse was Youmzain, who finished second in the Arc on three occasions, and won the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and Preis von Europa.

Former Derby winner Kevin Manning announced an end to his 40-year career after riding Vocal Studies to victory at Galway.

The 55-year-old Irishman rode his first winner in 1983 and had been stable jockey for trainer - and father-in-law - Jim Bolger since 1993.

Together the pair won eight British and Irish classics.

"I've had a great career, I can't complain, things have gone well and I've enjoyed some great days," he said.

"I was suspended for this weekend, which is the end of the grass season, and I had some good rides today and said to myself it is time to call it quits if one of these wins."

Arguably Manning's biggest success was in the 2008 Derby at Epsom on New Approach.

He also won the Irish Derby aboard Trading Leather in 2013.

Hermes Allen made all to win the Grade 2 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle with a neat, nimble round of jumping proving too much for his rivals to overcome.

Trained by Paul Nicholls for owners including Sir Alex Ferguson, Hermes Allen and his jockey Harry Cobden dictated the contest from the moment the tapes went up and were able to extend away after the last for a comfortable success.

Former champion apprentice Marco Ghiani has had his licence withdrawn for six months after testing positive for metabolites of cocaine.

Ghiani was tested at Newcastle on 25 August and subsequently given an interim suspension while disciplinary proceedings were arranged.

He admitted taking cocaine on two occasions, the second time two days before the positive test.

His licence has been withdrawn for six months, backdated to 5 September.

Via his legal representative, Rory MacNeice, the 23-year-old Italian, who was leading apprentice in 2021, did not challenge the findings of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA).

Shishkin, Greaneteen and Edwardstone were on Thursday among the final field of six declared for the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase (2.55) at Sandown on Saturday.

Shishkin, a four-time Grade 1 winner, has not been seen since disappointing when pulled up in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March behind Energumene.
