Discuss classic dance songs, underrated or well-known, credible or novelty, put it all here
I'll get the ball rolling with one of the best trance songs EVER
everyone seriously needs to hear this, every minute of it is absolutely lush
Also discuss more recent classics right here, there's quite a few great dance songs from the 00s! Like this one which used to be my favourite song ever before it was beaten multiple times by more recent releases
I wouldn't call these classics, more unknowns but boy they're ace!
2 of my faves of 04
Best dance song ever
One of my favourite classic dance hits is "Killer". It was released in May 1990 and it was No.1 in U.k for 4 weeks!!! There are also two other versions (George Michael & ATB).
Pete Heller ~ Big Love (#12, 1999) [House]
Still tearing up dancefloors today!
A few of my faves:
A few of mine for starters:
Can't believe it has been nearly 20 years since I used to go out clubbing to these
Shakedown ~ At Night (#6, 2002) [House]
Yeah Yeah Yeahs ~ Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Club Mix) [#89, 2009] {Electro House}
MUCH LOVE for the A-Trak club remix of "Heads Will Roll". I was more a mid-late 00s club-goer, but a track that gets mentioned here a lot and definitely makes me pine for those heady days of 2008 is Armin Van Buuren's "In And Out Of Love" which made it to the lofty heights of #198. : (
Extended remix obviously.
Well from this weeks 2000 chart retro, this trance gem:
Reached #5 this week 15 years ago
didn't love In And Out of Love at the time but now it sounds amazing. How even was that not a chart smash?!?
anyway I'm sure Armin's not complaining though as the radio edit video has over 150m views. To put that in perspective, This Is What It Feels Like only has 53m
I'm kinda shocked at how many UK dance hits have appeared in DanceDanceRevolution
'In And Out Of Love' is one of the defining songs that got me into dance music, absolutely euphoric and brilliant
in and out of love is one of THE best songs ever never mind best dance songs!
Ooh yes at Shakedown - At Night
A few that came to mind:
And loads more like 'Toca's Miracle', 'Castles In the Sky' etc...
the new Chicane album being released reminds me of this CLASISC
\
best listened to in all its 9 minutes, lush from start to finish
A couple of underground gems~
Âme ~ Rej (2006) [Tech House]
Nathan Fake ~ The Sky Was Pink (James Holden Remix) [2004] {Tech House}
such an underrated gem
MSTRKRFT - Easy Love (2006)
can't believe it's already that old!
Lovefreekz 'Shine' (2005)
debuted at #6 10 years ago now (yes it's that old) samples Electric Light Orchestra (not that I knew that at the time) and makes a great job of it!
Ian Van Dahl's follow up to 'Castles In The Sky' was 'Will I'. It was a Top 5 hit, but it's pretty much forgotten now, which is a shame as I think it would still have been a hit today.
Classic gem from Faithless from 2001.
Rui Da Silva ~ Touch Me (feat. Cassandra) (#1, 2001) [House]
Justice Vs Simian ~ We Are Your Friends (#20, 2006) [House]
They were my ringtones for many years..
Reviving this thread with a fave:
BT f/JC Chasez - "Somnabulist (Simply Being Loved)" (2003)
haven't heard of that before, not bad. Although this will always be BT's best effort for me
BT - Flaming June (BT & PvD Original Mix)
Olive ~ You're Not Alone (#1, 1997) [House]
DJ Quicksilver ~ Bellissima (#4, 1997) [Trance]
Watergate (aka DJ Quicksilver) ~ Heart of Asia (#3, 2000) [Trance]
You're Not Alone is not house Breakbeat
Sandy B - Make The World Go Round (Deep Dish Remix) [1996]
for those of you who haven't been on plug.dj to rediscover this~
Love Inc. - Broken Bones
even better than the song they're best known for (You're A Superstar), well worth a listen!
Another 50p buy from Woolworths bargain trance bin that I picked up during a stolen lunch hour back in the previous decade.
Josh Damon Gabriel & David Mitchel Dresden collab. with Jes Brieden on vocals which reached #11 (after selling 9,600 copies) on the UK singles chart in January 2004.
Sounding just perfect this morning, a big favourite of mine from 1997.

SuReaL was an early alias of Lange.
One of my favourite classic dance hits is "Killer". It was released in May 1990 and it was No.1 in U.k for 4 weeks!!!
Been playing this a lot recently
Overshadowed by Pump Up The Jam, Get Up was the second single released from Technotronic's debut album. It managed the same feat as its predecessor and reached #2 on the UK Singles Chart way back in early 1990.
Anyone remember this Des Mitchell track from January 2000? Got to #5 (briefly!)
I remember it vaguely, hearing it though what a tune.
Anyone remember this:
From 2003 which got to #9.
Has to be Daft Punk for classic dance electro.
Back to Moby and one from 1994 where he started to sound like The Prodigy ! Got to #30.
Set it up DJ!
the original and Nalin & Kane versions of Loveparade are both certified JAMZ
OK just listened to this song a couple of times back to back. Wonderful, soulful dance track
Chicane feat. Tom Jones - Stoned In Love
I love the appearance of Tom Jones at the end of the video
I like this one from early 2005, great funky dance track with so much disco influence I decided not to post the notoriosly dreadful video though
I remember this one from 2003. Such a great tune in an otherwise bad (imo) year for dance music in the charts
2003 really was a bit dry in terms of dance music, though we got some great songs out of it. Notably;
• Benny Benassi - Satisfaction
• Tomcraft - Loneliness
• XTM & DJ Chucky - Fly on the Wings of Love
• Room 5 - Make Luv
2003 a bit dry?
The summer that brought us “Pretty Green Eyes” and “Deepest Blue”. Just because you are too young to remember it doesn't mean you can brush it aside like that. Brilliant chart year!
I was never a fan of 'Deepest Blue'. Don't even remember it at the moment.
'Pretty Green Eyes' is quite good too but there have been better years for dance music.
I've been listening to this 1999 masterpiece ALL WEEK. I love those dreamy dub guitar melodies laid over bubbling and intricate techno/house. <3 <3
Love the Modestep shoutout! That was amazing when that charted, they would then go on to produce the masterpiece that is Sunlight which did even better
This one from 2003 I remember and I really liked it at the time.
In my top 100 songs of all time^
Are you also a fan of DJ Marky feat. Stamina MC - LK from 2 years prior? He really had the BEST voice ever for Drum & Bass songs.
I dont really remember it but I will listen to it now
This funky house song from 2004 is great
This is a tune as well .
One of the best dance songs from a pop act. It even has some trance influences.
I love The Saturdays' dance songs tbh
My favourite of the "dancey" Saturdays tracks is definitely Not Giving Up.
I know this is from 2010 but I am sure you wont mind me posting it. For me this is better than any of the Avicii records and the uncredited vocal from Amanda Wilson (on the Freemasons' first two tracks Love On My Mind and Watchin') is insanely good, I think it is one of the best vocals on a dance track in the 2010s at least.
Yeah I actually think looking back it's one of my faves of his for sure, the vocal melody is one of the best on any dance song & I miss that uplifting euphoric sound he had in his first few tracks - see Levels & Silhouettes of course (although the vocals are a little more downbeat in the latter).
I cant believe I am posting a Will.I.Am song but this one was quite different and was less commercial sounding with the heavy bassline than the rest of them. Easily my favourite will.i.am song.
The 'No Limits' of the 2000s. Was this the only rave track in the 2000s?
Early 00s style
Mix of UK and EU hits.
Livin' Joy are currently playing through my earphones at the moment, so thought I'd share their classics! 5 Top 20 hits *.* (but Deep In You isn't here because it's more of a ballad).
Yes Attention.I remember really well because it got played quite a lot on The Box at the time and that video with the woman on the chair I remember too.
This one I remember a lot from The Box too in 2005 despite the fact it didn't chart that highly in the top 40
Remix of a 90s dance tune, which had a lovely vocal but a rather boring piano based house sound imo, so I prefer this remix as this style of synths in dance tracks is something I like as it is so relaxing - similar style of synths in Sunfreakz Counting Down The Days and Cahill's Trippin on You, and more recently Michael Calfan's Nobody Does It Better.

Major Europe-wide hit way back in 1990, bafflingly I don't think it was even released here. Surely a huge UK top 3 smash was missed, hugely 'on-trend' sound for the era given the success of Soul II Soul, Beats International etc.
Dr. Alban would of course finally get a massive (and deserved!) UK hit single two years later.
well this is a bit of a jam that I just discovered.
Was (Not Was) (feat. Madonna & Ozzy Osbourne) - Shake Your Head (Let's Go To Bed)
the above version features Madonna but she refused to let them use her vocal in the end so it was re-recorded with Kim Basinger and made UK #4 in 1992.
Was (Not Was) (feat. Kim Basinger & Ozzy Osbourne) - Shake Your Head (Let's Go To Bed)
Astonishingly the album Now Dance 92 features the unreleased Madonna version of Shake Your Head, but only on the vinyl and cassette versions - the (much inferior) CD version has the normal Kim Basinger radio mix. I think it's the only album in the world to feature it, and god knows how Now acquired it and how they got away with using it!
Just seeing this thread now - so many classics!
I love some of these
Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You
Moloko - Sing It Back
Modjo - Lady (Hear Me Tonight)
Basement Jaxx - Red Alert
York - On The Beach
The last of the 00s eurodance tracks. There where two types of eurodance in the 00s, trancepop and the retro style (like this one), both were cheesy but I prefer the retro type as it was more fun. Anyway dance music shouldn't always be serious and thats why I like 00s dance music, there was a mix of serious and not so serious.
More seriously this 2007 track is fantastic, I don't like most 2007 dance music but this is a rare gem.
I really like this track too from 2007. Excellent chilled summery track which I remember quite a bit from the time, which is unusual as it undeservedly charted low in the top 40.
Featured on last night's EastEnders
Nice tune! Another one I've surprisingly not heard, given how much I was into dance classics back in 2013/14
On The Beach is great, I do like those instrumental trance tracks from 2000 (Sandstorm too).
There's so much I love about this.
1. The bassline is so simple but infectious, and instantly recognisable to anyone that followed music in the late 90's.
2. The fact it's totally instrumental just shows how you don't need vocals to make a hit.
3. The video is unique, humourous, and effective.
4. The simplicity of the song works in its favour, just so addictive.
5. It's literally just a looped bassline yet managed to hit #1, how strange is that?
6. Genuinely just an amazing track
We need more music like this in the charts. Opinions?
It's annoying af
Well it was only #1 because of the Flat Eric ad but still, a song doesn't get to #1 through mass publicity alone, amazing something like this actually took to the public & it sold a f***ton too iirc?
Yeah, I'm a huge fan of it myself!
The week this entered the http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singles-chart/19990328/7501/ with 284,000 copies in week 1, System F debuted at 14 with “Out Of The Blue” and Aphex Twin’s “Windowlicker” was new at 16. Both of those are FAR better IMO!
sold upwards of 270k first week(!!!) iirc, wasn't there at the time but the advert/video/song combination must've been the reason for it having such an impact.
I do like this a fair bit myself, it's a fun track - though going a bit too far to call it one of the best of all time personally.
Also I'm going to merge this with the Dance Classics thread, as that's what it should be used for.
'The Vengabus' is a bit of a choon tbh
I don't go back to 'Witch Doctor' though, it's a bit too novelty for me.
I'd actually say 'Flat Beat' is my fave in that top 10, though we have two great non-dance songs entering as well in 'You Get What You Give' and 'No Scrubs'.
'Flat Beat' definitely sold huge numbers on the back of this famous Levi's commercial, which aired all the time in early 1999.
Just rediscovered this beauty
Why don't we get dance music like this anymore
I think I jus came to the right thread. I love all your guys choices. I'm a big fan of "Deepest Blue" Nice choice JSG!
I cant add a link yet but I like Spencer & Hill "Get It On"
Nice rave track from 1991
Got recommended to listen to Enigma's first album last night. Amazing stuff
This is my favourite 90s dance track I think, just amazing! Featuring Vincent Covello (who isn't credited on this video).
Also one of the first vocal trance songs to become a hit in the UK (#28 in September 1995 and #14 in February 1996)
I would love the likes of Jonas Blue to do something like this today (he has had similar soulful male singers on a few of his records).
Following the unfortunate news of Marie Fredriksson of Roxette's death, I recommend this lesser known track of theirs, a Clubland classic with Dancing DJs which lifted from their 1991 track.
#18 in 2005.
think it might be time to revitalise this thread and now we're into 2020 you could even recommend something from the early 2010s. I'll start with a trance fave that hasn't popped up in this thread yet
Veracocha was the collab project of Ferry Corsten & Vincent De Moor.
Bumping this thread as I wanna introduce you to the Italian trio Datura.
Despite having zero UK hits, they had a couple of Italian hits in the '90s. With two of their tracks sampled by two different DJs this year, they surely became one of the most influential dance acts in 2023.
Infinity (#2 in Italy):
Gabry Ponte 2023 version:
Angeli Domini (#5 in Italy):
2023 cover by VIZE and Axel Cooper:
Don't know them, but know USURA from 'Open Your Mind' fame.
Wonder if anyone's familiar with this Castle In The Sky by Italian musician DJ Satomi (real name: Simone Bocchino). This has been covered on 2 different hardstyle songs in the last 2 years. Released in 2004, the original version has 11M Spotify streams and 24M YouTube views so far.
