New album is coming in the Summer.

Posted by: LMLou 5th March 2020, 09:16 AM

It somehow feels too soon, even though it’ll be more than 3 years after Witness
Think she should wait till she gets at least another NRO sized hit

Might not even happen.

I'm glad to hear an album is coming. I hope it's an improvement on Witness, and I'm intrigued to see what makes it out of what we've had so far.

Posted by: Juliano 5th March 2020, 04:18 PM

Well I want it, as long as it's on par with atleast Prism I'm great with it.

She probably doesn’t want to do a lot of promo after giving birth, I’m guessing we could possibly have a world tour early next year though

Posted by: Jordan Lee 5th March 2020, 06:34 PM

I think this will be more of a album for fans than a full on return to music / touring.

I expect this will tide fans over until 2022 perhaps.

I think she might shoot a load of videos before she gives birth to promote tracks on the album.

Posted by: slowdown73 5th March 2020, 07:56 PM

While I’m a big fan, I think Katy will struggle to have a strong comeback unless the material is stronger.

Posted by: Scene 29th March 2020, 09:07 AM

She should take a breather until 2022 imo. Never Really Over was a return to form for her but the following singles didn't cut it. I'd rather she waits, spends time cooking up great pop and making the general public miss her than to release her album too soon and it bombs more than Witness.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 29th March 2020, 06:49 PM

I wonder what way Katy’s gonna go after she becomes a mum.

Will her career go down the Xtina route or the Pink route?

Posted by: Scene 30th March 2020, 01:11 PM

I just hope we don't get a postnatal equivalent of Never Worn White.

Posted by: JulianNial 1st May 2020, 11:32 AM

So it's called either 'Smile' or' Grateful' right?

They never do it to the male ones - well, not that Drake and Kanye are aryisys. They force people to camp out in studios making songs for them whilst rhey eat expensive food, staring at the camp aggressively as they do so, in order to try and intimidate them.

Posted by: legendsglory 7th May 2020, 04:04 PM

The first single is called 'Daisies' and will be out Next Friday.

Posted by: LMLou 7th May 2020, 04:07 PM

Surprised she seemingly isn't putting NRO on the alum after it's massively positive response

Posted by: Juan Carlos 8th May 2020, 12:39 AM

The album is reportedly to be called Smile and it's expected to be released on June 26. There are going to be 13 songs in the standard version, including "Never Worn White". "Never Really Over" will be attached to the album as a bonus track and "Harleys In Hawaii" will be on the deluxe edition.

QUOTE(JulianNial @ May 1 2020, 06:32 AM) *

The track was going to be called "Smile", but it was changed to "Grateful". FYI, it's been said that this is the next single.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 8th May 2020, 12:44 AM

June 26 is rather soon!

I’m here for some new music from her though as her first three albums all had quite a few many individual tracks that I liked on them. Teenage Dream is her magnum opus at this point in her career but I’m excited to see what this album sounds like and if her pregnancy has played a part / influenced the sound.

I can see this peaking higher than both Witness and her debut as well here in the UK there’s definitely still interest in her and i think this has potential of perhaps winning back some casuals what were lost during witness she’s definitely getting more positive press lately anyways!

Posted by: 365 8th May 2020, 04:15 PM

Katy has given away the standard track list using an e:flower site.

www.katysdaisies.com

1. Never Really Over
2.
3.
4.
5. Daisies
6.
7. Grateful
8.
9.
10. Harley's in Hawaii
11.
12.

It seems Never Worn White and Small Talk have not made the standard. Good choice.

Posted by: Liam.k. 8th May 2020, 04:18 PM

Well that looks much better with 'Never Really Over' opening! Not fussed about 'Harley's in Hawaii' but it has its fans so I guess has a place.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 8th May 2020, 04:23 PM

So Daisies isn’t the lead single after all or is it laugh.gif

Posted by: Scene 8th May 2020, 04:31 PM

Great to see NRO opening the album. clap.gif It would have been a DUMB decision excluding it when it's her best song ever. kink.gif

Posted by: Andrew. 8th May 2020, 05:39 PM

Omg it's happening it's happening

Posted by: Beef Curtains 8th May 2020, 06:20 PM

I bet they're kicking themselves that Harley wasn't just the second single laugh.gif

Posted by: Liam.k. 8th May 2020, 07:17 PM

'Small Talk' was such a weird choice. They just had a well-loved, decent performing pop hit and they follow up with something so non-eventful and plodding.

Posted by: Juan Carlos 9th May 2020, 03:09 AM

Glad that "Never Really Over" and "Harleys In Hawaii" made the cut and they are in the album.

Posted by: Bjork 9th May 2020, 01:26 PM

NRO had to be on the album, would have been crazy not to
her post calling Daisies 1st single was a tad misleading smile.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 9th May 2020, 10:35 PM

So relieved the suggestion that 'Never Worn White' is on there but not 'Never Really Over' isn't accurate. I would have gone spare.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 9th May 2020, 11:44 PM

I wonder what the vibe of this album is gonna be like.

I don’t see it being experimental like Witness yet also can’t see it being a pure pop return like Teenage Dream.

I think this might be Katy’s toned down era (the Joanne in her discography) Ryan Tedders worked on it and I think he said she’s showing how great a singer she is on this record. I think it’ll be pop but in a more toned down kind of way.

Fans can now pre-order "Daisies"-themed bundles http://katy.to/KPshopPR. They can also visit the singer's digital flower shop, Katy's Daisies, and send virtual bouquets and messages to friends and loved ones.

"Daisies" is the latest single off Perry's as-of-yet untitled upcoming album. It follows previously released tracks "Never Worn White," "Harleys in Hawaii" and "Small Talk."

Her fifth album is out August 14 via Capitol Records.

Posted by: Atonement 15th May 2020, 07:26 PM

Has it been confirmed that 'Harleys in Hawaii' and 'Never Really Over' are on the album? If so, she made exactly the right call by including those two bops and excluding 'Small Talk' and 'Never Worn White'.

I actually prefer the other two !

Posted by: Juan Carlos 19th May 2020, 03:03 AM

There are references of "Never Really Over" and "Harleys In Hawaii" in the site below, while there aren't from "Small Talk" and "Never Gone White", so it's most likely that the first two song made the cut in the album.

Posted by: slowdown73 20th May 2020, 08:04 PM

I suspect never worn white and small talk could be bonus tracks on the deluxe edition. It would be nice to have both on a physical cd!

Posted by: slowdown73 30th June 2020, 10:33 PM

I wonder if this album is still coming on 14th August? I would have expected more news by now.

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 1st July 2020, 12:30 AM

I don’t think we’ll get another single until either July 31 or August 7.

But we should get some news at some point soon like the albums name and track listing followed by the cover.

I’m quite looking forward to hearing the full album. I think vocally it could be her best yet and could manage to perhaps win over the critics too even if commercially it ends up as her lowest seller.

Posted by: Cameron 2nd July 2020, 08:24 PM

She said in an interview that not all of the released tracks will be on the album (as we know) but she is putting Never Really Over on it.

As already mentioned a few times in the thread the flower website gives away the track listing. Since then she has revealed more song titles that match the lyrics so we have:

1. Never Really Over
2.
3.
4. Daisies
5. Resilient
6. Teary Eyes
7. Smile (feat. Diddy)
8. Champagne Problems
9.
10. Harleys in Hawaii
11. Only Love
12. What Makes a Woman

No lyrics match NWW or Small Talk but you never know they could be on a deluxe?

Posted by: Andrew. 4th July 2020, 02:52 PM

Champagne Problems to be a Megatron cover please

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 8th July 2020, 06:42 PM

I like Smile as a title but that cover not so much.

It would’ve looked better textless (if that’s actually the cover) but the red clown nose is making it look like a charity single cover for Red Nose Day.

She’s had some great covers though. Witness had a really good album cover tbh.

We’ll soon see if that’s the real cover. She’s revealing it on socials soon.

Yeah I've appreciated all her covers but Witness is breathtaking. I don't think that, along with her general IMAGE that era helped it with the casuals though.

I really don't like the font on the bottom half but the top half is gorgeous. Apparently one of the versions of the album doesn't have the giant Smile, and is just the top picture in full - I'll look forward to that.

I'm not sure I like it, but an album cover doesn't always represent the album so I'm not too bothered and maybe it'll grow on me.

I really liked the 'daises' style and was hoping for something more like that.

I like the concept but it's very B-tech art. The second one looks better.

They're really not particularly short for pop album tracks in 2020, 8/12 are over 3 minutes which doesn't say anything these days.

Posted by: Jay* 9th July 2020, 11:10 PM

I personally don't have any issue with the time lengths right now, given that we've not heard them yet to be able to judge whether they make sense being the lengths they are. Sometimes a song is great for being short and sweet!

It’s kinda the new norm now for tracks to be shorter for some reason!

Arianas thank u, next and Gagas Chromatica for instance have tracks which are kinda short in length.

It’s better for streaming sites supposedly but it’s unfortunately just the way music is at present. Maybe they’ll be good tracks though who knows.

What’s on the deluxe what isn’t on the standard? I may have missed this. 12 tracks feels quite good for an album tbh.

I’m still not sold on that cover I like the concept behind it though I just keep picturing Red Nose Day though laugh.gif the font is worst thing though that Smile text in huge letters on the bottom. I’d like it more as a textless cover but trying not to focus on album artwork as sometimes fantastic covers doesn’t mean great albums and then there’s cases of brilliant albums with meh covers.

Not long to go until this is is fully out though!

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 10th July 2020, 12:13 PM

I think she should be able to get a top 3 debut tbh. Sales will be around Witness or slightly lower which would be enough for top 3 in today’s charts.

Can’t see her missing the top ten.

Posted by: J🐠hq 10th July 2020, 12:33 PM

Witness included a top 5 hit, was following a much more successful era and was released in a better time. But even if her opening week sales halved, that would still have been enough for top 3 last week so fair do's.

Posted by: Andrew. 10th July 2020, 02:22 PM

Yeah you need 4k to get top 10, if Katy actual Perry couldn’t get that through Buzzjack sales alone I’d be shook kink.gif IIRC Witness was only on pre-order a few weeks before it was released and far less fan bundles. This has a good month of pre-order and all the bundles should hopefully mean she can scrape 10k at least.

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 10th July 2020, 02:32 PM

I think she’ll be on around 12k this time. That’s my prediction.

I think there’ll be some people buying multiple copies with the different formats what will help her and she should also stream quite good too.

Deluxe edition has 4 bonus tracks according to Amazon.

According to insiders at ATRL that leak all her info, Smile isn't a single for now - and Teary Eyed is the follow up to Daisies.

3. "Teary Eyes"
4. "Daisies"
5. "Resilient"
6. "Not The End Of The World"
7. "Smile"
8. "Champagne Problems"
9. "Tucked"
10. "Harleys In Hawaii"
11. "Only Love"
12. "What Makes A Woman"
13. "Small Talk"
14. "Never Worn White"
15. "Daisies" (Acoustic)
16. "Daisies" (Oliver Heldens Remix)

Yep delayed until 28th August due to "production delays"? Mess.

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 28th July 2020, 12:46 AM

This might actually help her get a better peak position tbh! Gives an extra two weeks of potential pre orders anyways.

She’ll now be competing with Drakes third week on sale if he’s really releasing on the 14th and Taylor’s album would’ve been available on all formats for four weeks by then too.

I’m kinda 50/50 on if that’s the real reason it’s been pushed back I was under the impression the albums been completely finished for a while now.

Posted by: Nick Jonas 28th July 2020, 06:52 PM

Surely it’s not been delayed because of the competition? It’s not like it’s going to be a #1 smash anyway?

Nah she wanted it on the 14th because that's when she's due. It was genuinely production issues.

Do you know what the production issues were, because they've had this date for ages and i've read on ATRL that copies of the album were already printed so seems odd to suddenly jump into issues (coincidentally around the time Drake's release was heavily rumoured - just to add to the conspiracy theorists!). Many websites (such as Urban Outfitters) have/had the vinyl ready to be shipped from August 14th too, so again it seemed like everything was largely ready!

One reason could be due to the Diddy version of the title track and them switching between which to include on the album? Idk~

? Either way, this is shaping up to be an even bigger disaster than Witness was. We have heard 8/16 of the tracks on the deluxe fan album, and she has done HEAPS of live performances and interviews etc, so it's not even like more promo will help.

It's actually specifically because of Diddy that there are production issues, some of the vinyls were already manufactured but he (or his people) wants off.

Well apparently, in the lyrics to the original version of the song they say "n*****" so I don't think it's just Diddy that now wants out manson.gif

https://genius.com/Katy-perry-smile-original-version-lyrics / https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/katyperry/smile.html

If the above tweet is to be believed, the vinyl still contains this version so I assume they are frantically shredding those copies and making new ones ~

Posted by: HausofGhibli 28th July 2020, 08:30 PM

And therefore, not "production issues", but removing racist issues from a song that must have been OK'd initially. huh.gif

Posted by: 365 28th July 2020, 08:33 PM

So that's why there's a gaping hole in Smile where the rap once was and the song goes nowhere. I assume there just wasn't enough time to get something else done in terms of feature. Not that there was much saving that song but i think the rap gave it a bit more life and it brought it from a 5 to a 6/10.

I'm so confused? In those 'original lyrics', only Diddy says that word and unless I'm missing something...loads of rappers do that?
QUOTE
[Verse 3: Diddy & Katy Perry]
I gotta crack a smile, even laugh a while (That's right)
Been through a lot, but I ain't backin' down (Let's go)
See, I came in the game with the flashy style (Woo)
Now I'm looking at the wealth that I'm passin' down
I'ma seen the light, it's a pleasing sight
Girl, we even manifestin' when we sleep at night (Right)
Fell down couple times, now we reachin' heights (Ha)
Yeah, to be precise, I'ma lead the fight (Woo, let's go)
Been appointed, light on your life so anointing
Catch me two-steppin', n****, stressin' is pointless
No need to worry 'cause the truth is here
And I'm smiling, bitch, with my new veneers, yeah (Oh no no no no)

I smell BS

Yes, but Katy sings along through that verse with her adlibs. I can hear it in my head now "woooo smile.gif", "n*****", "ooooh yeah smile.gif" Regardless though, it's on a Katy Perry song on a Katy Perry album. You'd be OK with it being said on that? I can't in any way see how it would be a good move for Katy...

But if you read the alleged lyrics you'll see she has no adlibs during that part of the rap:
QUOTE

Wouldn't they just cut that line anyway?

I'm sure it probably is wise for them not to have the n-word on her song but I don't get what you're trying to say. The rap isn't on the song, so obviously they realised that it'd be a problem and changed it. It hardly seems a massive deal.

I am discussing the reason her album has been delayed in a thread for... her album? I am not "trying to say" much more unsure.gif

Whether you or I think that her having a song with "n*****" on it is ok or not, doesn't really matter because her team clearly thought it was an issue if they have pushed back the entire album because of it and are redistributing the vinyl (if that is the case). Nothing has been confirmed, we are just discussing the reason and 365 has identified the Diddy verse as being that reason.

Posted by: Andrew. 28th July 2020, 11:05 PM

Fine then.

I wouldn't rule out a #1 debut for this, going by his last mixtape Drake's 3rd week won't be that much to compete against. The thing that might stop her getting #1 is actually HRVY's album, ik he's had very little success in the singles chart but the bundle-buying will be off the scale laugh.gif

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 28th July 2020, 11:24 PM

The Drake album is an album this time around but I don’t know if we’re looking at a Scorpion type debut or a Dark Lane Demo tapes.

Katy could perhaps do similarly to Ellie Goulding’s first week sales?

Posted by: George.keh 29th July 2020, 12:19 AM

dk whether anyone’s seen it trending on twitter but Bastille’s website page has just posted and deleted a song “coming soon” called Drunken Hearts with Katy Perry

Posted by: 365 29th July 2020, 12:06 PM

It was actually more to do with Diddy wanting off, than anything to do with him using the N word on the song.

Posted by: Cremey 29th July 2020, 12:43 PM

Diddy not being on there doesn't really make a difference (well, apart from the delay...), it's not as if he's a big selling point as a featured artist in 2020 laugh.gif
It's probably a blessing in disguise anyway – regardless of who was saying the word, it wouldn't be great to have that word on a Katy Perry album.

It's annoying none of the alternate covers are outside the U.K. I love the fan made one; the canon and the pink wig the most. In fact the only one I'm not keen on is the balls one.

Posted by: Jay Something 3rd August 2020, 11:01 AM

I like them all, the canon/matchstick one in particular is a serve!

I wish they were on her UK store! I would have wanted a picture disc, but I can't justify the postage charge and probable customs charge... that would make one vinyl end up costing over £50.

I wonder if Katy's people had to clear the usage of the fan made one, because it's copied from an American Horror Story poster: https://www.graphis.com/media/uploads/cache/d3/ea/d3eade5976847993f1ba7edb87e840a7.jpg

Rappers use the N word on white people's songs all the time. Cardi B on Maroon 5's song for example.

The reason was because a week before the song Smile was meant to be released Diddy decided the message of the song was wrong with BLM/corona/ what's going on with the world, which halted production of the album.

I agree, this should debut higher than 'Witness' in the top 5, but got a feeling that this will drop down the charts pretty fast & sell less than her last album (which I wasn't keen on) & judging by the lack of decent or successful hits (although 'Never Really Over' & 'Daises' are great), but the title track, 'Harley's in Hawaii' aren't very good at all, their poor chart performances speak for themselves.

Posted by: Jonjoliday 25th August 2020, 09:13 PM

I've heard the album. I (genuinely) can't say how, but here is my ranking on first listen!

Never Really Over
Harley's In Hawaii
Teary Eyes
Cry About It Later
Not The End of the World
Tucked
Champagne Problems
Smile
Small Talk
---
What Makes A Woman
Only Love
Daisies
Resilient
Never Worn White

I loved it. Such a return to form (coming from someone who actually doesn't hate Witness either - oops). But everything above that line (YES Small Talk too you heathens! mad.gif) is fantastic! 'Tucked' gives me 'Teenage Dream' meets 'Prism'-era Katy and I mean that in the best possible way. Just so FUN! Everything below the line is nice enough, but they're strictly filler (but I wouldn't remove any of them from the album - if that makes sense)

The way that the main pop girls have SLAYED 2020... amazing. Kudos to her - so, SO good! wub.gif

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 25th August 2020, 09:48 PM

Ooh a review! So is it more mature throughout the whole album than her previous albums without giving much away and was the Teenage Dream meets Prism description you mentioned just on that one song or like throughout the entire album?

Posted by: Jonjoliday 25th August 2020, 10:36 PM

More noticeable on that one song, just because it's the most fun, pure pop track. The whole album definitely feels more mature in it's content but is quintessential Perry at the same time (ala Never Really Over). This is very much a 2020 Katy Perry album.

I don't want to give too much more away coz I always get nervous about over hyping aha. But I should imagine 90% of the forum will stan.

Posted by: Jonjoliday 25th August 2020, 11:24 PM

Adding onto those:

Not the End of the World is very Iggy/Rita - Black Widow/Dark Horse with the dramatics of L Mix - Lightning. The more I think about this the more I think it's my fave of the previously unheard - it's tied with Teary Eyes and Cry About It Later rn.

Champagne Problems wouldn't sound too out of place on Future Nostalgia. Imma pretend it'a on there over Good In Bed tbh. It's cute.

Someone prefers Smile to Daisies?!

I don't know if I can trust your judgement.

Posted by: Andrew. 26th August 2020, 08:12 AM

Daisies AND Smile might be top 10 Katy for me now ;o

Posted by: dannjohn 26th August 2020, 09:01 AM

'Smile' has to be the worst thing Katy's done in years, alongside most of 'Witness' and 'This Is How We Do'

Posted by: Jack 26th August 2020, 11:07 AM

This Is How We Do is one of her best singles though.

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 26th August 2020, 11:16 AM

This Is How We Do was her worst single at the time for me but then Bon Appetit and Swish Swish topped it not long after.

Everything so far from this era has been better than those at least. Daises is her most underrated and under appreciated song since Rise for me.

Posted by: 365 26th August 2020, 11:18 AM

This is How We Do has aged like a fine wine.

Posted by: Jonjoliday 26th August 2020, 12:36 PM

This Is How We Do is amazing. Top 5 Katy for me.

But yeah. I find Smile cute, but some of her vocals in Daisies are a bit :') (even if the song is lovely).

Teary Eyes is fantastic!

'Teary Eyes' is everything - that's the album she should have aimed for.

The sample used in 'Not the End of the World' cheeseblock.png wub.gif

Her best album since TD. Nothing comes close to the absolute pop masterpiece that is 'Never Really Over', but it's a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Posted by: 365 26th August 2020, 08:15 PM

They really went and f***ed up what could have been a great singles campaign didn't they?

Cry About it Later, Not The End of the World, Teary Eyes, Champagne Kisses, Tucked are perfection? Teary Eyes and NTEOTW are a bit dated sounding bangers, but CK and Tucked are so fresh, almost Future Nostalgia sounding?

Yup

1st single: Never Really Over
2nd single: Not the End of the World
3rd single: Teary Eyes
4th single: Tucked/Cry About It Later

...if they'd have gone with something like that, I'd imagine we'd be looking at a much more accomplished era.

Posted by: Jonjoliday 26th August 2020, 09:19 PM

Tucked gives me Say So vibes!

Posted by: JulianNial 27th August 2020, 07:20 AM

I actually love/like every single song, I hope 'High On Your Supply' is available on streaming because It's good! 'Teary Eyes', 'Not The End Of The World', 'Champagne Problems' and 'Tucked' are my favourites after first listen. I have to praise the flow of the album too, each song complements the one before/after pretty well!

Posted by: Andrew. 27th August 2020, 09:48 AM

The album is up 50 places on Amazon since she gave birth, can Rih have a baby before R9 tyvm

(Jk of course Gaga.png)

Posted by: jsweetxe 27th August 2020, 02:08 PM

Her lyricism on this album is really.. not that great, neither is the cohesion of sound. I'm always so conflicted with Katy's albums because she has the makings of what makes a strong pop star, she just never fully puts that into her music. We always get a few tracks which are amazing, then some that are great and then some that are meh.

Never Really Over / HIH being on the album really helps with boosting the high points because the intended-for-Smile tracks aren't that great for the most part.

Daisies is a really nice song, especially considering what she has been through. Smile / Resilient and End of the World are quite lacklustre, they don't have those catchy, blazing KP hooks. Teary Eyed is good, but it's very dated and doesn't go anywhere towards the end when it really could have. (Roulette remains superior)

Y'all said Champagne Problems was good so I raised my expectations and eh.. not sure if they were met? I enjoy the production and flow of the song but that "crust in my eyes" lyric is so horrible, it's very "i don't wanna shower, even if i stink" from Zara. Her vocal runs/belts at the end, especially the climax, are some of my favourite Katy vocal moments, though. Not all bad.

Tucked was okay as well, I enjoyed the guitar riff but GOD going from Champagne Problem's sort of 80s/disco inspired-tinge to a 00s guitar-heavy led song is really giving me whiplash. Only Love is probably my favourite, lyrically. It's quintessential Katy, very honest with just a touch of cheese, but given what she's gone through in the last few years, it's a given.

What Makes a Woman is short but sweet, the melody is easy-going and I feel like its very telling of the album's sound and what she wanted to achieve. But the completely different sounds just.. let it down.

Posted by: JulianNial 27th August 2020, 02:55 PM

I've just realized I need 'Not The End Of The World (feat. Ariana Grande)' as a single at some point. It would suit her so well! laugh.gif

Posted by: dannjohn 27th August 2020, 03:14 PM

I flip flop on ‘Smile’ way too much. I actually like the song now.

The album is leagues ahead of ‘Witness’ and isn’t as patchy as ‘Prism’. I’m loving ‘Teary Eyed’ & ‘Cry About It Later’. ‘What Makes A Woman’ is very sonically catchy also. I’m impressed.

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 27th August 2020, 03:41 PM

Just listened and wow. I'm so impressed, wasn't expecting it to be anywhere near this good.

Ranking on first listen (this will probably all completely change laugh.gif ):
1. Only Love
2. Never Really Over
3. Cry About It Later
4. Teary Eyes

5. Smile
6. Resilient
7. Daisies
8. Champagne Problems
9. What Makes A Woman
10. Not The End of the World
11. Tucked

12. Harleys In Hawaii

The main thing that I love about Only Love is the lyrics, especially in the chorus. cry.gif

The top 4 are all amazing. I actually quite like Harleys in Hawaii but it's definitely my least favourite on the album.

Posted by: Andrew. 27th August 2020, 06:32 PM

I’ve only listened once, but there were no lowlights. A fab and very Katy Perry album. It’s not even been that long and I’ve missed her so much omfg wub.gif

I’d love a top 3 debut but we’re looking at #5 minimum so at least it’ll be better than Witness. I’m trying not to be bothered about numbers, she’s just had a baby she doesn’t give a f*** :’)

Posted by: HarryEzra 28th August 2020, 12:03 AM

Loved it was way more cohesive than Witness

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 28th August 2020, 12:45 AM

This is definitely a LOT better than what Witness was a whole piece.

It was cohesive enough that all the tracks flowed well and the story of the albums message seemed clear too.

Smile the song being a single was questionable when she had Not The End Of The World right there! That was my favourite album track on first listen. Only Love a close second.

I’d say a few songs feel too short and could’ve done with like an extra 30 seconds length or so the closing track definitely ends a bit abruptly.

Posted by: JosephStyles 28th August 2020, 01:37 AM

It's a GREAT album and mostly really cohesive!! I don't think the title track fits all that well but I do actually really like it these days.

I think she's totally f***ed up the singles though. At this point, we should have had a run of:

1 Never Really Over (unchanged)
2 Harleys In Hawaii (instead of Small Talk as originally planned)
3 Cry About It Later (when Harleys got released, so November-time, but with a full push)
4 Daisies (unchanged)
5 Teary Eyes (leading into album)

And then Not the End of the World for a post-album single if they wanted to do that. I think we'd be in a better position with the above! sad.gif

That aside, I can already tell I'm going to peep this album so much more than Witness heart.gif I enjoyed every song to some extent, Resilient is the weakest moment on first play but that was still pretty great.

Posted by: ...ready for it 28th August 2020, 05:38 AM

Teary Eyes is so good.

Posted by: Brightest Blue 28th August 2020, 06:32 AM

Not the End of the World is a rip off of Ellie Goulding’s ‘Hollow Crown’, but I am HERE for that! wub.gif

Posted by: Jonjoliday 28th August 2020, 07:39 AM

OK so Resilient was my least fave of the new tracks... but it's an ear worm and I've come around to it already :')

NTWOTW lends itself to being a post album release with an added feature too! I could lowkey hear Post Malone on a verse.

Posted by: Slick 28th August 2020, 08:06 AM

I've just listened to this while having my breakfast and really like it on first listen. 'Cry About It Later' in particular sounds great.

Posted by: 365 28th August 2020, 09:27 AM

Listen I'm a fan of Small Talk and Daisies... but imagine sitting on songs like Cry About it Later, Not The End of the World, Champagne Problems and letting Katy's star fade with these bizarre choices?

Posted by: troublepink 28th August 2020, 09:27 AM

Just given this a first listen on Spotify. My top 3...

1. Only love
2. What makes a woman
3. Resilient

Overall its a good album. There are some tracks that aren't really what I would normally listen to, but certainly will grow on me.

Posted by: J00psyMethyd 28th August 2020, 10:09 AM

Decent. Better than Witness, not quite as good as Prism but more cohesive, not a patch on Teenage Dream.

Posted by: J00psyMethyd 28th August 2020, 10:11 AM

Teary Eyes is my early standout. Not The End of the World isn't bad (also would've been a MUCH better single to drop this year than Daisies) but is a wee bit too much like Dark Horse lite as well - production could've switched up just a bit.

1. Teary Eyes
2. Cry About It Later

09.0 Champagne Problems
10.0 Tucked
08.5 Harley’s In Hawaii
09.5 Only Love
08.0 What Makes A Woman

This is just what I need right now lmao. Wonderful album, not a bad song and contrary to the reviews I actually think Katy explores some new ground both lyrically and sonically. Resilient, Only Love, Tucked And Not the End especially sound so fresh for her.

I am so happily and pleasantly surprised.. I loved NRO & Daisies, but had really low hopes for the whole album/era... and..
The album is better than the previous 2 for me. Feels more mature and yet still captures that signature Katy Perry pop sound.

Never Really Over
Resilient
Only Love
daisies
Teary Eyed

These are my favourites.. but I appreciate the other songs too! I now love HIH, and Ive never listened to it after the single release day

Teary Eyes 8/10
Daisies 7/10
Resilient 6/10
Not the End of the World 9/10
Smile 4/10

I wish 'High On Your Supply' was on streaming, really like that one too. For me I'm actually enjoying this more initially than I was 'Prism', but obviously not quite near the heights of 'Teenage Dream'.

With her just having a baby in the last few days has all the promo she’s done deliberately been done before hand and is there nothing else to come in terms of singles?

I wonder if there’s a pre recorded video / single choice lined up for the coming weeks.

Posted by: Calum 28th August 2020, 07:45 PM

Been listening to this non-stop, and it really is such a return to form. wub.gif Not quite at the heights of either Teenage Dream or Prism, but this is the typical Katy Perry I love, and she's still managed to mature a lot and just make music that's meaningful to her and do what she wants.

Shame to see Resilient getting a bit of a hard time though, because I love the lyrics and it's pleasant to listen to.

1. Never Really Over
2. Only Love
3. Tucked
4. Daisies
5. Teary Eyes
6. Not the End of the World
7. Smile
8. Resilient
9. What Makes a Woman
10. Cry About It Later

12. Harleys in Hawaii

Not even sorry about Harleys being last; it's by far the worst thing there. Should have been replaced with Never Worn White.

5. Resilient
6. Only Love
7. Daisies
8. Tucked

Just listened! Liked it, not complete love yet but it's a cute album. It starts fantastically with the huge pop moments, then dips a fair bit in the middle, but returns to form towards the end with the majestic Only Love being a real highlight for me. It doesn't reinvent the wheel or really progress much from what she has done in the past, but in her own unique lane, this fits in nicely. She clearly has things to say and put right with this so I can imagine it was a very cathartic experience for her especially coinciding with Daisy's arrival <3

Who knows how it will perform commercially or critically, and I think for her at this stage, it doesn't matter? She beat herself up in the aftermath of the reception towards Witness but retrospectively seems to have come out stronger as a result of that, so I hope this is a wholly more positive experience for her and can enjoy life as a mother without the pressures of being a popstar.

Posted by: Andrew. 28th August 2020, 09:40 PM

No matter what the charts show, I think this era has restored a lot of goodwill amongst the GP towards Katy even if she’s not the hitmaker of the 10’s. Such a contrast from the backlash she received during Witness for...idek now lmao which was horrible to watch.

Posted by: Jonjoliday 28th August 2020, 10:27 PM

With this album, I think it's clear that Katy isn't going for success with this (although it would obviously be a bonus).

She's just showing that she is happier and it's showing in her music and like someone else said, making this album seemed very therapeutic for her. In similar ways that Joanne, Blackout, thank u next etc.. were.

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 28th August 2020, 10:55 PM

Whilst Katy isn’t going for huge success with this album I do think that if this was the album to follow PRISM it would’ve done better than what Witness did three years ago *if* the right singles were picked.

She’s been sitting on proper bangers here though and releasing tracks what are less GP friendly (but perhaps she chose what’s most representative of her rn who knows) she definitely seems happier though and I guess that’s the main thing whatever happens she’s already made it and she doesn’t have much left to prove at this point she’s just releasing music but in a more healthy way this time.

Honestly I really get Xtina vibes from Katy’s mainstream career (UK wise) laugh.gif

Posted by: JulianNial 29th August 2020, 08:11 AM

I was curious to see what the reviews were for the album and they're mainly mixed positive which I then thought I'd compare to 'Teenage Dream' since it's so highly regarded and 'Teenage Dream' only got mixed reviews (about the same as Witness), a lot more negative than 'Smile'. Interesting. laugh.gif

Posted by: Sour Candy 29th August 2020, 11:03 AM

I'm positively surprised! There are some clear standouts (such as NRO, Teary Eyes and Tucked to some extent) but none of the tracks are bad which is always nice. Hope it does decently on charts. The single choices are a bit weird I must say, even though I like Daisies a lot myself.

Posted by: Bjork 29th August 2020, 12:58 PM

And Pitchfork also gave it a bad review

Posted by: Jonjoliday 29th August 2020, 01:08 PM

EDIT: When it comes to pop albums I really don't take most critics seriously in all honesty, but those 2 publications are always at the very bottom of my list for who I trust with pop album reviews laugh.gif

She hasn’t had one critically acclaimed album, or one even well reviewed. It’s not a surprise. I don't think her career, in general, has been received particularly fairly in comparison to some of her peers.

I'm sorry, but whoever was behind the decision making of single choices on this album is a total idiot.

I don't think they necessarily represent the best of the album, the two songs in the 'fan favourite' poll - Cry About It Later and Teary Eyes as well as the album closer What Makes A Woman are worth checking out to get a better picture of the album.

Absolutely. The general consensus seems to be "why the hell were the songs which were picked as singles outside of NRO chosen when there's SO much better on the album"

What’s the official first day Spotify streams for this?

Stan Twitter has multiple different figures and they’re so far apart from one another I don’t know which one is real

I’ve heard 7.8m but not sure how true that is?

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 29th August 2020, 04:47 PM

7.8m sounds the most true to me.

I seen one saying she done 32m but that sounded very high laugh.gif

I’ve also seen 17m and 25m too. Looking at Apple and Spotify’s single chart data though 7.8m feels the most like the real figure to me but iirc I think even Witness outdid that

Posted by: Nick Jonas 29th August 2020, 04:59 PM

Yes I saw Witness did 10-11m.

I'm not surprised that the album is excellent, as I liked most of the singles (Small Talk & Harleys in Hawaii are so underrated!). cheer.gif

Don't forget Witness had actual hits leading into the album... not a hit that was over a year old.

But yeah I don't really care for the success of this album so much, I mean it'd be nice, but I don't think we need to be worrying about Katy's future whether this does well or not. She's happy and given us a really enjoyable, good pop album with it and it was more of a personal journey for her to get this out.

Posted by: slowdown73 29th August 2020, 10:49 PM

Well I’ve heard the album in full now. It plays very safe. There are some nice songs but it doesn’t hit any of the high notes from prism or teenage dream. I’m really glad they included small talk and never worn white on the deluxe. The Japan edition also has two bonus tracks namely; message from Katy and high on your supply. Has anyone heard these?

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 29th August 2020, 11:16 PM

I think as a whole album this could be better than Prism for me! Prism had some instant standouts and higher highs but as a whole piece Smile is stronger all the way through and it’s an album I could say I’d listen to all the way through without skipping. Yeah this is mostly a hit for me just questionable single choices.

Posted by: Liаm 29th August 2020, 11:24 PM

I'm really impressed by this album, didn't expect a lot but I don't think there's a single dud here tbh! It does play it safe, it's nothing groundbreaking but sometimes, you don't need to be. It just feels like the right album for her right now, you can tell she has released what she wants to and it's been a healing process for her. From the new tracks, my highlights would be Teary Eyes, Cry About It Later and Not The End O The World, but like a said not a single dud. It's not 10/10 after 10/10 but it's a consistent album with some bops that I love, you can just feel that she's happy and that's priceless.

Yeh I like it!

I'm very upset to see some reviews of the album (Namely British articles) being both ageist and misogynistic. Disgraceful journalism. Why does everyone act like 35 is old and that when you have a child your life is over. Makes me sick.

Kylie was at the peak of in her career in her mid 30s, Whitney had hits and major albums in her her 40s and Madonna was having hits in her 50s just to name a few. Then look at all of the men 35+ who've maintained a strong presence in the charts and people don't even flinch.

Posted by: Andrew. 30th August 2020, 03:54 PM

I’m finding a lot of the reviews very inconsistent and unfair but Katy’s never gotten a good critical reception so I’m not bothered. Much. Even Teenage Dream got a meh reception from critics (OF COURSE when it smashed they suddenly changed their minds and put it on the decade-end lists)

Posted by: Andrew. 31st August 2020, 06:59 PM

I wasn’t sure what to expect but I’m kind of disappointed with the US projection, I know she had a tour bundle but it’s weird to think she’ll probably debut with less than Xtina’s Liberation. If she gets top 3 here that’ll make up for it x

The deluxe is down to #23 on Amazon and the standard is #56 but I’m not too worried, webstore sales will be most important and she’s only behind Metallica and Gregory Porter out of the new releases. Question, as Small Talk and Never Worn White are only on the deluxe physical edition of the album will they count towards the streaming?

Posted by: Nick Jonas 31st August 2020, 07:17 PM

Not sure, but they’d have to be in the Top 12 streamed tracks on the album...

I've totally noticed how every review has mentioned her age, and framing it as if 35 is ancient. It's really not cool!

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 31st August 2020, 08:06 PM

It’s definitely a female thing that age is always mentioned. I remember Gagas age being mentioned a lot in the Chromatica reviews and they’ve mentioned folklore being Taylor’s first album as a 30 year old quite a bit too. Not that it makes a difference.

I mean even recently P!nk who was 40 last year got herself a three week #1 album! Women still continue to dominate in their 30s. Beyoncé is probably another example too (and soon to be Rihanna when she finally drops R9!).

As for the streaming question I don’t think it’ll affect Katy as those tracks aren’t on the album on streaming platforms. I could be wrong though.

I'm trying not to think too much about the chart success for this but it's hard when you know people are monitoring it ready to denounce her and call it a flop etc..

We should be happy with #5 tbh (and apparently less than 3K separate the top 5!) considering it's 4 days of sales! I assume no lower than #7 for it? Don't forget this has one hit to sell the album on (and that was over a year ago). I also wouldn't be surprised if this album has missing pre-orders from the current mid-week total (ala 5SOS/Selena) especially as, like Joe said, it was a bank holiday this weekend.

I think no lower than 7, which is a good result all things considered I think.

Those sales are hugely underwhelming and disappointing nocheer.gif Did they count the bundle sales and physicals from the store because I can't see how the sales can be that low with those added in. I can't see any song from the album making a huge splash now so not even sure what can salvage the campaign.

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 4th September 2020, 06:57 PM

I’m surprised her sales are as low as that. Tbh though on my Twitter for example I’ve seen pretty much nothing about this album being mentioned by those I follow etc and I follow a lot of pop music pages and fan pages of artists too.

When I was out with some friends earlier too I mentioned this album and a few of them were totally unaware that she’d released a new album. So it could be that too.

I think the album could’ve stood a better chance if it had been released last year (like when Never Really Over was a genuine hit) by the time we got the album it felt like the hype kind of dried up and people lost interest. It’s a shame it’s performed this way as it is a step up from Witness.

I agree that I can’t see anything else making a splash on the charts either. She should just get some features under her belt like what Xtina did when her solo success dwindled.

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 4th September 2020, 07:04 PM

Also.. is there a vinyl for this now available to buy? They can usually sell quite a bit and sometimes make the difference between getting to #1 on some occasions. If there’s one still to come that could boost it on that chart week. If there already is one though then idk.

The cream standard vinyl, red HMV vinyl and picture disc were all available, as well as standard CD, deluxe CD and cassette.

However the custard Spotify vinyl isn't shipping for a couple more weeks, while all the different limited artwork versions (5 CDs and 5 picture discs) won't count towards the chart until early November!

I wonder how many extra sales it could’ve gotten had the other editions mentioned been available and if it’ll randomly jolt back up the chart during that week when they’re available or if it won’t make much difference at all.

The fact she sold less than both Gaga and Taylor’s week 3 though oops. I mean I obviously wasn’t expecting her to match their debut week on sale but I thought she’d have managed around 4-5K more than what she did.

I know we're not focusing on numbers!!1 but this will surely now go down as one of the BIG defining underperformance eras for a big pop girl. Witness seems like a SUCCESS compared to this. Baffling, I thought she'd capture the streaming world with ease but it seems to have impacted her worse than a lot of other stars around in the past decade.

Posted by: Andrew. 29th September 2020, 08:27 PM

Yeah this has underperformed even relative to my expectations. I was kinda shocked she only did 6-7k pure sales with those bundles. But her reputation is still better than it was after Witness, even if they’re not obsessed with her music I feel the GP are liking Katy as a person a lot more so in those terms the era has been a success! She’s got a baby and a fiancé, she’ll cope with a worldwide top 5 album 🤷‍♂️ It’s certainly not up there on the relative flop scale with your Britney Jeans, Lotuses etc

Posted by: jlj 29th September 2020, 09:10 PM

Omg 172 in the midweeks so it’s fell like over 80 places and I take it her decade old album is ahead like this isn’t great at all!

She doesn’t deserve to underperform this badly especially with an album that’s actually half decent all the way through. I’m not completely shocked because I mean Katy has struggled with streaming and critics haven’t been kind to her but she actually really went quite big with promo so I don’t think the “maybe people don’t know she has new music out” excuse counts here like she went really went to town with promo and worked her ass off all through the pregnancy / lockdown and she’s barely been out the press through her pregnancy / birth.

Posted by: J00psylicious 29th September 2020, 09:14 PM

She just promoted it so poorly. Smile and Small Talk are both frankly not good songs, even at her peak they don't sell Katy Perry the brand well, and in 2019-20 especially both were just really tone deaf as promotional tools for the album - the point is meant to be that fans pick up the album based off what they've heard & liked.

Posted by: dannjohn 9th October 2020, 04:21 PM

But after the album was put up for pre order she didn't do a single bit of TV promo, sadly. I know she did a lot of online stuff, but most of that is stuff that only fans that are already invested will see. It would have been nice if she did the proper TV promo circuit like Miley has with her new single. but it is understandable given she was about to pop.

Yeah... it’s worse! BJ sold 13k first week and was released in the busiest period of the year, Lotus was released in Q4 too, and I’m certain both spent more than 4 weeks on the Billboard 200!

You can't compare sales from 2012/13 to now and say because someone sold more in 2012/13 than someone did now they were more successful. If anything 13k is less than 6/7k is in 2020. The second best selling album of the week sold 20k this week which shows how different sales are. BJ and Lotus were #34 and #28 compared to Katy's #5 which says it all.

I personally don't see the point in comparing them since they are at very different stages of each others careers btw, but if you are going to then the above applies.

Except they were released during the Christmas period and those sales would’ve been enough for top 5 or even #1 on a very quiet week. Bionic went #1 does that make it a smash hit? And In the Zone only peaked at #13, does that mean it did worse than Smile? And it’s not really a strange comparison. Katy’s been around 12 years now, she’s at the stage Britney and Xtina were in the early 10s.

Anyway, Glory outperformed Smile in every sense so I don’t see why the Britney Jean comparison is needed.

Also there were no bundles for BJ or Lotus... the only thing all 3 singles have in common is their lead singles underperformed and weren't any followup hits from any era... (BJ and Lotus were also ditched pretty much after release week).

Has she switched labels or something? I notice the latest EP has been released under 'Universal' instead of 'Capitol'.

No. The random (& useless) EPs are usually released by the parent record company.

I'm still annoyed they didn't push "Cry About It Later". sob.gif

I really enjoy the album still. It should've done better. sad.gif

To be fair, I've never seen such an awfully managed campaign in my life (in terms of the single choices). It's no wonder it performed as it did.

Harley's is picking up a lot of popularity thanks to TikTok, Popjustice is reporting streams have gone from 40k to 215k in around 2 weeks. Go throw it a stream or two for good skin!

cheer.gif i wonder if it will start charting at some point if the rise in popularity continues.

Posted by: Dangerous Julian 13th September 2021, 10:01 AM

It's almost top 40 on Worldwide Shazam and continuing to rise on Spotify and Apple Music globally. A few celebs including Ariana and a Jenner have used Harley's in social stories.

Posted by: Dill Doe 13th September 2021, 04:05 PM

It should have been pushed hard after NRO.

Posted by: Envoirment 13th September 2021, 08:34 PM

They're up to almost 500k now.

I've always found it bizarre how much Buzzjack seems to dislike this song.

People dislike Harley's? One of her best of recent times!

Posted by: 365 20th September 2021, 10:51 AM

Harleys is now #1 on Katy's most popular on Spotify for the first time.

Is she? The label have done nothing.

Still gaining and recently entered top 200 on Shazam in US. Plus it's getting added to spotify playlists...

It'll be top 200 on global spotify soon. It recently did almost 600k in its recent day, its highest so far!
