75. Michelle Fowler

JosephStyles 2, HausofGhibli 7 = 9 points

Michelle Fowler (also Holloway) was played by Susan Tully from the first episode in 1985 until the character's departure in 1995. On 24 December 2016 Michelle returned after 21 years, with Jenna Russell taking over the role. In her first stint, Michelle made some huge mistakes during her time in Albert Square mainly through having a habit of choosing the wrong men and her stubborn nature meant that she rarely accepted help or listened to good advice.

Early in the series, the character of Michelle became central to the programme and was the focus of a controversial storyline involving her teenage pregnancy. Press interest in the show escalated to "record levels" as journalists continuously tried to guess who had fathered her baby. In whodunnit fashion, the audience had been kept in the dark as to the father's identity and were offered teasers implicating several Square residents. The culprit was finally exposed in October 1985 on episode 66. Written by series co-creator/script editor Tony Holland and directed by co-creator/producer Julia Smith, it was considered to be a landmark episode in the show's history. 4 possible suspects were seen leaving the Square in the episode's first half: Tony Carpenter, Ali Osman, Andy O'Brien, and Den Watts. As Michelle waited by their rendezvous point, a car pulled up and the fluffy white legs of Roly the poodle bounded out of the car, revealing that the man who was meeting Michelle, the father of her baby, was Den Watts. The rest of the episode was one long scene of Den and Michelle discussing whether or not to keep the baby. Until that time, that 15-minute scene was the longest ever done on a soap opera. Writer Colin Brake has suggested that this was a bold experiment for a series that had established a reputation, in its first 8 months, for being fast-moving and rapidly cut. It relied on only 1 story and 2 actors to hold the audience for over half an episode. Tony Holland's handling of the awkward scene between a teenage girl and her best friend's father is considered one of the highlights of the programme's first year. The finishing touch was the use of alternative end-title music, "Julia's Theme", a variation of the usual one which replaced the dramatic drum beats with a longer, gentler piano-solo introduction.

Since the recast to Russell in 2016, Michelle's storylines have revolved around her having had an illegal relationship with her student, Preston Cooper, in America; a love triangle involving her niece Bex Fowler; stealing a car that belonged to Sharon's husband Phil Mitchell and subsequently crashing the vehicle into the local chip shop; having to take care of Phil's daughter Louise and Sharon's son Denny Rickman on her own when the couple later go on holiday; and being stalked by Tom Bailey over his scheme to defraud her. Russell's departure from the show was announced in March 2018, and Michelle soon departed the programme on 17 April 2018.

74. Steven Beale

Hide&Seek 11 points

Steven Beale was played by Edward Farrell from 1989 to 1990, Stuart Stevens from 1992 to 1998, Edward Savage from 1998 to 2002, and Aaron Sidwell from 2007 to 2017. It was announced on 22 February 2008 that the character would be written out at the end of Sidwell's contract, and he made his on-screen departure on 9 May 2008. On 2 May 2016, it was announced that Sidwell had returned to the role. Steven returned on 27 May 2016 and made his final exit on 8 September 2017 when the character was killed off during a high-profile stunt week.

In the 1990s, Steven's storylines mostly concerned his paternity and the ongoing custody battle between his mother, Cindy Beale and his stepfather, Ian Beale. In the early 2000s, a darker side to adolescent Steven emerged as he began writing poison pen letters to neighbours, before moving to New Zealand to be with his father, Simon Wicks. In the late 2000s, Steven's storyline focused on his hostile relationship with Ian, and involved stalking Ian, taking Ian hostage, multiple suicide attempts, and accidentally shooting Ian's new wife, Jane. Steven also dates Stacey Branning but struggles with his sexuality and an attraction to Jane's brother Christian Clarke, and he attempts to murder his grandmother, Pat Butcher. Since his 2016 return, Steven becomes deceitful with his girlfriend Lauren Branning by having an affair with her sister Abi which sparks the events of the character being responsible for Abi's pregnancy; fabricating a lie about having a brain tumour; and nearly killing Jane again after Lauren and Abi's father, Max, blackmails him into setting fire to the restaurant in his plan to kill her as revenge for her contribution to getting him wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of half-sister Lucy, who was previously killed by their stepbrother Bobby. Ultimately, Steven contemplates rescuing Jane and ends up getting injured in the fire by Max, which consequently triggers the character suffering a fatal cardiac arrest in hospital; Steven dies and his lies are soon discovered at his funeral a week later.

Terribly disappointing recast.
I don't believe Jennas acting was the issue, it was very bad storylining.

Michelle Fowler is ICONIC. Such a shame that her return was handled so badly. A recast could have worked (look at Martin for example) but the way they used her/wrote for her was poor.

73. Nana Moon

Feel The Fever 12 points

Victoria "Nana" Moon was played by Hilda Braid. Kate Colgrave Pope played her as a 24-year-old in a flashback episode from 1944. She was introduced alongside her grandsons, Alfie and Spencer Moon, and made her first appearance on 3 December 2002. A decision was made to kill off the character in 2005 following the announced departures of her on-screen family, and she made her last appearance on 16 December.

Braid appeared in 210 episodes as Nana Moon. Her storylines included meeting Wilfred Atkins, a fraudster who wanted to con her out of her possessions and fulfilling a list of things she wanted to do before she died. During later storylines, Nana's health began to fail and she developed dementia. Nancy Banks-Smith from The Guardian criticised the portrayal of dementia, but praised Braid's performance. Dek Hogan from Digital Spy said the dementia scenes were "a welcome change."

One of Nana's final storylines saw her visit Normandy with Alfie to see her late husband William's grave. The episode featured a two-minute silence, flashbacks to Nana's backstory, and a guest appearance from the actor Trevor Peacock, who played Sid, a war veteran. The episode won "Best Single Episode" at the British Soap Awards in 2006. Braid's final scenes saw her character killed off, after dying of aortic aneurysm. The decision to kill off Nana was criticised by fans and critics, who did not see why she had to be written out of the series, just because Shane Richie had announced his departure.

72. Lucas Johnson

Hide&Seek 12 points

Lucas Johnson, played by Don Gilet, made his first on-screen appearance on 3 April 2008. Lucas is introduced as a reformed drug addict and criminal-turned-preacher who appears as the estranged father of established character Chelsea Fox. He has a son, Jordan, and goes on to marry Chelsea's mother, Denise. Gilet has described Lucas as having "Jekyll and Hyde" aspects to his character. Despite his religious convictions, Lucas leaves his former wife Trina to die; murders Denise's ex-husband Owen Turner; drowns his son's dog Sugar; and strangles Denise before locking her up in a basement while allowing her family to believe that she is responsible for the murders - with Lucas killing another woman to use as Denise's supposed body so that her family could believe that she committed suicide. The character served as the show’s main antagonist until his departure on 30 July 2010 after getting arrested for the murders of Trina and Owen, both of which were publicly exposed after he allowed Denise to escape and she subsequently revealed his crimes to her family - which resulted in Lucas briefly holding Denise and her family hostage until he eventually turned himself in. Lucas made another appearance on 1 January 2016 before making a temporary return later in the year, after escaping prison, and then departing again on 10 March the same year.

71. Louise Mitchell

Cameron 12 points

Louise Mitchell (also Fowler) has been played by four different actors since her on-screen birth on 6 November 2001. She has been played by Rachel Cox between 2001 and 2003, Danni Bennatar in 2008, Brittany Papple in 2010, and Tilly Keeper from 2016 to 2020.

Louise is a member of the Mitchell family and briefly part of the Fowler family. She is the daughter of Phil Mitchell and Lisa Fowler, stepdaughter of Sharon Watts, granddaughter of Peggy Mitchell and the half-sister of Ben Mitchell. Louise's early storylines include Lisa lying about her paternity; her nearly being killed in a road collision caused by Phil's archenemy Steve Owen; subsequently becoming caught up in her parents' relationship; and a feud with Ben that involves him physically torturing her.

From her return in 2016, Louise's storylines included her blackmailing Abi Branning over her fake pregnancy; helping her father cope with the death of his mother Peggy; forming a friendship with Bex Fowler; being the victim of bullying by Alexandra D'Costa and Madison Drake, in the early midst of which Louise briefly bullied Bex. After the bullying storyline ended with Louise suffering burns in her prom disaster, Lisa made a brief return to the series and appeared to have abducted Louise – albeit this was part of the feud between Lisa and Phil. In addition, Louise's storylines have also included being kidnapped by a gang that are in dodgy dealings with Ben and Phil and relationships with fellow student Travis Law-Hughes; Steve's son Hunter; local classmate Keegan Baker and Phil's employee Keanu Taylor which results in the birth of their daughter Peggy Taylor. Louise played a pivotal role at Christmas 2019 when she discovered that Keanu had been sleeping with her stepmother Sharon Watts and is the father of her unborn child. After leaving Keanu for dead, Louise departed to Portugal to escape imprisonment.

70. Jim Branning

Pippa 1, HausofGhibli 11 = 12 points

Jim Branning, played by John Bardon, first appeared on 29 April 1996 and became a regular character in 1999. He remained in the series until 2011.

In 2000, Jim was paired romantically with pensioner Dot Cotton, played by June Brown; a slow courtship was featured, with Dot often shown to be outraged by Jim's advances, resulting in numerous rejections. Dot finally succumbed and accepted his marriage proposal in an episode that aired in November 2001; the scenes were filmed inside one of the carriages of the London Eye on the South Bank of the River Thames. Their wedding aired on 14 February 2002, Valentine's Day.

Jim was temporarily written out of the show in August 2007 due to Bardon suffering a stroke, and a storyline was created in which his character also suffered a stroke. Bardon returned to film four episodes in the latter half of 2008, and returned permanently from the episode broadcast on 20 August 2009. On 1 April 2011 it was reported that Bardon had filmed his final scenes and had left. He departed on 26 May 2011, and, although it was said the character may re-appear in the future if Bardon's health improved, this did not happen and the actor died on 12 September 2014, more than three years after leaving the series. Following Bardon's death, it was announced in March 2015 that EastEnders would pay tribute to him and the character by staging a funeral for Jim.

69. Jamie Mitchell

Lukuzz 13 points

Jamie Mitchell, played by Jack Ryder, made his first appearance on 9 November 1998. Jamie's story arc mostly resolved around his on-and-off relationship with Sonia Jackson. Their relationship faces many struggles after Sonia gives birth to Chloe (now known as Bex) at the age of 15 - who is fathered by Jamie's best-friend Martin Fowler, whom she was with before she met Jamie; and is put to the test again when Jamie sleeps with her close friend Zoe Slater.

During that time, Jamie develops a close interaction with his godfather Phil Mitchell – who, originally appearing as Jamie's second cousin once removed figure – takes him in after discovering that his uncle Billy used to beat Jamie on a regular basis. Overtime, Jamie gradually mends his situation with Billy and supports Phil against his two archenemies – Billy's boss Steve Owen and Phil's ex-business partner Dan Sullivan. Following the events of the Who Shot Phil? storyline and its aftermath, however, Jamie's relationship with Phil deteriorates after he helps his former girlfriend Lisa Shaw escape to Portugal with their daughter Louise. This results in Phil beating Jamie up in October 2002, a moment that sparked thirty-one complaints to the Broadcasting Standards Commission. Two months later, the character departed from the programme when Jamie – after getting engaged to Sonia – gets run over by Martin and dies in hospital on Christmas Day of spleen damage.

When Ryder decided to quit his role, executive producer John Yorke said that the 'door would be left open' for Jamie to return, though when Yorke was succeeded by Louise Berridge, the decision was made to kill Jamie off. The decision was highly criticised, and Ryder said it was a shock for him, but said that if he had not been killed off, he would not have returned anyway.

68. Archie Mitchell

Pippa 14 points

Archie Mitchell, played by Larry Lamb, first appeared on 8 July 2008 as the newest member of the Mitchell family. The character's story arc began with Archie being reunited with his two daughters Ronnie and Roxy. While it quickly grew evident that Archie had seemingly shared a closer bond with Roxy, his relationship with Ronnie became volatile and tempestuous — after it had transpired Ronnie was previously forced by her father to give up her newborn baby, Amy, for adoption shortly after she gave birth to the child. He soon instigates trouble between his two daughters by destroying Roxy's marriage with Sean Slater and later manipulating Ronnie into disbelieving the fact that her employee Danielle Jones is actually her long-lost daughter Amy - the latter of which consequently resulted in Danielle being killed in a hit and run on the day Archie married his sister-in-law Peggy. He was then kidnapped by Peggy's son Phil and subsequently forced to leave Walford for good, but Archie ended up returning with the intent of getting revenge on his family. His plans gradually came to light when Archie forged a romantic partnership with Peggy's hated stepdaughter Janine Butcher; exploited Phil's sister Sam while she was on the run for her involvement in the murder of Den Watts; and blackmailed Phil's stepson Ian Beale with the knowledge that he cheated on his wife Jane — which were all part of his scheme to successfully swindle his family from their beloved home, The Queen Victoria public house. He thereupon caused the death of Ronnie's unborn child and later betrayed Janine by leaving her temporarily homeless upon finding out that she and her boyfriend Ryan Malloy plotted to defraud his wealth in their get-rich-quick scheme. Shortly afterwards, Archie got his comeuppance when he was murdered on Christmas Night 2009 after an unknown assailant pushed the Bust of Queen Victoria onto him. This had both ended the character's reign of terror scenario in 2009 and triggered the events of his own whodunit storyline, dubbed Who Killed Archie?, that occurred in early 2010.

It was soon revealed two months later in the show's first live episode, that Archie's murderer was in fact Sean's younger sister and Danielle's best friend,Stacey Branning, whom he had raped on 6 October 2009 to cover-up his revenge scheme by escalating her bipolar disorder trauma, which led to Stacey being sectioned as a result of Archie raping her. During that same live episode, it also transpired that Archie had previously raped Ronnie and she would eventually describe this revelation to her family on 20 July 2010

67. Keegan Baker

HausofGhibli 14 points

Keegan Butcher-Baker (also Baker), played by Zack Morris, was introduced as a friend of Shakil Kazemi in the episode broadcast on 9 January 2017. He moves into Albert Square with the rest of his family five months later.

In March 2018, it was announced that Keegan and Shakil would be involved in a "hard-hitting" knife crime storyline that "will place the Kazemis and Taylors at the heart of the show", following Keegan and Shakil being attacked in "tragic scenes" that sees their lives turned "upside down." The storyline will explore the "wide-reaching ramifications of knife crime for those for all those involved." For the storyline, the show is working alongside the Ben Kinsella Trust, which was founded by former EastEnders actress Brooke Kinsella, who played Kelly Taylor from 2001 to 2004, after her brother was stabbed to death. Kinsella said that she "commends" EastEnders for choosing to "portray the realities of knife crime" and with it still rising, "people need to understand its lasting impact" as "It simply destroys lives forever." Executive consultant John Yorke added that "the brutal reality" of knife crime was "brought home" to everyone at EastEnders through the murder of Kinsella's brother. He described knife crime still as "prevalent today" and the show has "a long tradition of tackling serious public issues" and described the knife crime storyline as "the most important the show has ever embarked on", calling the episodes "powerful, heart-breaking and dramatic" as well as hoping they make "it clear that knife crime destroys the lives of everyone it touches."
