75. Michelle Fowler

JosephStyles 2, HausofGhibli 7 = 9 points

Michelle Fowler (also Holloway) was played by Susan Tully from the first episode in 1985 until the character's departure in 1995. On 24 December 2016 Michelle returned after 21 years, with Jenna Russell taking over the role. In her first stint, Michelle made some huge mistakes during her time in Albert Square mainly through having a habit of choosing the wrong men and her stubborn nature meant that she rarely accepted help or listened to good advice.

Early in the series, the character of Michelle became central to the programme and was the focus of a controversial storyline involving her teenage pregnancy. Press interest in the show escalated to "record levels" as journalists continuously tried to guess who had fathered her baby. In whodunnit fashion, the audience had been kept in the dark as to the father's identity and were offered teasers implicating several Square residents. The culprit was finally exposed in October 1985 on episode 66. Written by series co-creator/script editor Tony Holland and directed by co-creator/producer Julia Smith, it was considered to be a landmark episode in the show's history. 4 possible suspects were seen leaving the Square in the episode's first half: Tony Carpenter, Ali Osman, Andy O'Brien, and Den Watts. As Michelle waited by their rendezvous point, a car pulled up and the fluffy white legs of Roly the poodle bounded out of the car, revealing that the man who was meeting Michelle, the father of her baby, was Den Watts. The rest of the episode was one long scene of Den and Michelle discussing whether or not to keep the baby. Until that time, that 15-minute scene was the longest ever done on a soap opera. Writer Colin Brake has suggested that this was a bold experiment for a series that had established a reputation, in its first 8 months, for being fast-moving and rapidly cut. It relied on only 1 story and 2 actors to hold the audience for over half an episode. Tony Holland's handling of the awkward scene between a teenage girl and her best friend's father is considered one of the highlights of the programme's first year. The finishing touch was the use of alternative end-title music, "Julia's Theme", a variation of the usual one which replaced the dramatic drum beats with a longer, gentler piano-solo introduction.

Since the recast to Russell in 2016, Michelle's storylines have revolved around her having had an illegal relationship with her student, Preston Cooper, in America; a love triangle involving her niece Bex Fowler; stealing a car that belonged to Sharon's husband Phil Mitchell and subsequently crashing the vehicle into the local chip shop; having to take care of Phil's daughter Louise and Sharon's son Denny Rickman on her own when the couple later go on holiday; and being stalked by Tom Bailey over his scheme to defraud her. Russell's departure from the show was announced in March 2018, and Michelle soon departed the programme on 17 April 2018.

74. Steven Beale

Hide&Seek 11 points

Steven Beale was played by Edward Farrell from 1989 to 1990, Stuart Stevens from 1992 to 1998, Edward Savage from 1998 to 2002, and Aaron Sidwell from 2007 to 2017. It was announced on 22 February 2008 that the character would be written out at the end of Sidwell's contract, and he made his on-screen departure on 9 May 2008. On 2 May 2016, it was announced that Sidwell had returned to the role. Steven returned on 27 May 2016 and made his final exit on 8 September 2017 when the character was killed off during a high-profile stunt week.

In the 1990s, Steven's storylines mostly concerned his paternity and the ongoing custody battle between his mother, Cindy Beale and his stepfather, Ian Beale. In the early 2000s, a darker side to adolescent Steven emerged as he began writing poison pen letters to neighbours, before moving to New Zealand to be with his father, Simon Wicks. In the late 2000s, Steven's storyline focused on his hostile relationship with Ian, and involved stalking Ian, taking Ian hostage, multiple suicide attempts, and accidentally shooting Ian's new wife, Jane. Steven also dates Stacey Branning but struggles with his sexuality and an attraction to Jane's brother Christian Clarke, and he attempts to murder his grandmother, Pat Butcher. Since his 2016 return, Steven becomes deceitful with his girlfriend Lauren Branning by having an affair with her sister Abi which sparks the events of the character being responsible for Abi's pregnancy; fabricating a lie about having a brain tumour; and nearly killing Jane again after Lauren and Abi's father, Max, blackmails him into setting fire to the restaurant in his plan to kill her as revenge for her contribution to getting him wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of half-sister Lucy, who was previously killed by their stepbrother Bobby. Ultimately, Steven contemplates rescuing Jane and ends up getting injured in the fire by Max, which consequently triggers the character suffering a fatal cardiac arrest in hospital; Steven dies and his lies are soon discovered at his funeral a week later.

Terribly disappointing recast.
I don't believe Jennas acting was the issue, it was very bad storylining.
