A very timely show being shown on BBC1. The show's a documentary about landlords who move into the houses lived in by their tennents for a week to see what life is like when the shoe's on the other foot.
Just watched this! Quite a good concept for a show and was good to see the landlords step out of their comfort zone, live in their tenants shoes and make some changes
Well, that was a rather eye-opening program to watch. The show featured two landlords who moved in to their tenant's house. In one case, they moved into a 2-bed house lived in by a 66-year-old woman who had to work 3 jobs to pay her rent, with only £50 left over after bills. The house had mold growing in all rooms, among other issues, and she said that because she was on a rolling tenancy agreement, she was afraid to contact the landlords as they could kick her out in 2 months.
The father/son landlords moved in for a week, and when they noticed that the place for making food was disheveled, at first they said that they'd consider renovating it, but that she'd run it down within a few years anyway, then realised that it they renovated it, they could straight away rent it out to someone else for £300 a month more straight away.
Without spoiling anything more, I will say that there was a happy ending to it all, of sorts, but it was a very affecting programme, especially given the current housing situation that I was in. Seeing what went through the landlords' heads made me thankful that I've never had to rent, and has given me a greater respect of those that find themselves trapped within the rental system. It's the sort of program that could turn even a member of the 1922 Committee into a Corbynite in the space of an hour.
And the show is now already causing a storm on social media...
This sounds so good, I have gotta see it!
