Svala - Paper

Posted by: Ryan. 20th September 2016, 05:32 PM

Söngvakeppnin is returning as expected although it is happening weeks later than usual, which will mean no time for a revamp that Iceland often exploit so well. Nevertheless, I really hope they get back on track with their qualifications this year - Maria and Greta were better than quite a few of their other acts in recent years. Greta in particular was just sensational and is definitely the biggest Eurovision shock like ever!

QUOTE
Icelandic broadcaster RÚV has opened the submissions process for Söngvakeppnin 2017, therefore confirming that the much-loved national competition will return as their Eurovision selection process once again. Artists and composers can send in their entries via the advertisement on RÚV’s Eurovision website before the deadline on October 28th.

The official 2017 rules have also been published, and they confirm that the Söngvakeppnin 2017 will take place slightly later than it has done in previous years. The first semi-final will take place on February 25th 2017, the second semi-final on March 4th, and the final on March 11th. Winners of Söngvakeppnin in recent years have tended to revamp their entries between their victory and the final submissions date for Eurovision in mid-March. However, this change will mean that the winner will be extremely limited on time with the deadline for Eurovision 2017 submissions likely to be at a head of delegations meeting on March 13th judging by schedules in previous years.

This year Greta Salóme returned to Eurovision but sadly failed to qualify for the final in Stockholm. This was the second successive non-qualification for Iceland who, before 2015, had been on a run of seven consecutive final appearances.

Well I'll be missing the entirety of this due to clashing with Melodifestivalen, what happened to Nordic selections happening in January.

Posted by: Martyn 21st September 2016, 08:22 PM

I've decided Daniel Oliver of finalists of 2015 Cadem, will be looking to enter this. Recording a song in Icelandic recently... I smell a contestant.

Posted by: Ryan. 20th January 2017, 11:34 PM

Biggest name in this selection is Svala Björgvíns who is very popular both as a solo artist and as member of the band Steed Lord (was in BJSC I think?) in Iceland!

Posted by: LexC 20th January 2017, 11:54 PM

They're all up http://www.ruv.is/songvakeppnin. Since it's a well known but unacknowledged fact that they're usually written in English first and then translated into Icelandic for the first round of qualification for the National Final, pretty much all of the songs have both an Icelandic and an English (and we presume, Eurovision-ready) version to listen to which is a nice touch on their part.

Posted by: LexC 21st January 2017, 12:00 AM

Svala Björgvíns's entry in this is called 'Paper' and it sounds like a pop-ified version of 'Love Injected'. Fairly sure she's got the selection wrapped up if she's as popular as they're saying she is.

Posted by: LexC 21st January 2017, 12:12 AM

The full list be:

Arnar & Rakel - Til mín/Again
Aron Brink - Þú hefur dáleitt mig/Hypnotized
Aron Hannes - Nótt/Tonight
Daði Freyr - Hvað með það?/Is this love?
Erna Mist - Skuggamynd/I'll be gone
Hildur - Bambaramm
Júlí Heiðar & Þórdís - Heim til þín/Get back home
Linda - Ástfangin/Obvious love
Páll & Kristina - Þú og ég/You and I
Rúnar Eff - Mér við hlið/Make your way back home
Sólveig - Treystu á mig/Trust in me
Svala - Ég veit það/Paper

Both of the Arons have rather good tropical pop numbers so I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed to see 'Hypnotized' be a bit of a surprise winner (I guess we'll see come March which of the two would stand out more in the Kyiv lineup).

Posted by: Ryan. 21st January 2017, 12:20 AM

I'm really liking Paper, getting the Love Injected comparisons and would be a great winner. Gave Hypnotised a listen as well and that's going to be quite the guilty pleasure, very standard tropical pop bop but you can't help but have a little groove to it and there's a little key change in there too. Iceland giving us a summer calypso tune would be quite the oxymoron but maybe it is what they need?

Posted by: ScottyEm 21st January 2017, 10:22 AM

Paper is good. Not sure about paper as a metaphor but the icy production and 80s tones has won me over. Iceland would sail back to the finals with this.

Posted by: AdamAloud 21st January 2017, 02:27 PM

'Tonight', 'Paper' and 'Hypnotised' would be my top 3, 'Bammbaramm' is quite good as well.

'Hypnotised' is like Freddy Kalas does SaRaha, I think I prefer it in Icelandic.

Posted by: Qassändra 22nd January 2017, 01:57 AM

Paper is wonderful but - and I know this is UTTER HERESY - for my sins I actually prefer Hypnotised.

Posted by: Ryan. 22nd January 2017, 08:43 AM

I think I do too! It's like when I secretly preferred Bombo to I Feed You My Love despite how good the latter was and still is.

Posted by: Conderella 22nd January 2017, 09:19 AM

Paper is fantastic. I am fully backing it.

Bammbaramm is really good as well.

Hypnotised is catchy but it is so damn exhausting to hear this tropical shit everywhere. Tonight is the better of the two evils so if we need to have a tropical bop then I would prefer the latter definitely.

Rúnar is quite good as well but of course it's far from the ESC material.

Can't get over the perfectly shaped head of Júlí. Countries have chosen this type of song to represent them before so I am fearful it could be the case here.

Is This Love could be great but it's not quite there.

The rest is tragic.

Posted by: gooddelta 22nd January 2017, 11:44 AM

Oh god, of course this is the year of Eurovision goes tropical house. The contest is always a year or two behind commercial trends!

Anyway Hypnotised is catchy, though it sounds like Dangerous Love by Fuse ODG. Paper is very good, as is Bammbaramm.

The whole compilation is on Spotify now btw.

100% HERE for Paper *.*

Posted by: Conderella 4th March 2017, 08:47 PM

The first semi completely came unnoticed. Probably because of Loreen last week and that's understandable.

Either way, its a true peenfest so far in the final.

Posted by: Conderella 4th March 2017, 08:48 PM

Omg Hildur of the 2010 ikonec host fame *.*

Posted by: Conderella 4th March 2017, 08:49 PM

Aron with the tropical shit is on. I think he is winning. Ugh

Posted by: Ryan. 4th March 2017, 08:53 PM

I have 2 big favourites in each semi. In the first semi 'Tonight' made it but 'Get Back Home' didn't, hopefully 'Hypnotised' and 'Paper' will both make it tonight!

My overall favourite is Hypnotised, so if that has a chance of winning I'm down for it. I think I'd actually prefer both of the Arons over Svala. I do love Paper but I think either Aron would be fantastic for variety.

Posted by: Conderella 4th March 2017, 08:55 PM

Just watched Svala's performance and she was UTTERLY SENSATIONAL. The song is absolute perfection and she gives off such an amazing vibe. It's a bit weird and I absolutely love it. A bit of Dinah Nah too, let's be honest. If she wins this goes straight at the top of my rankings.

Posted by: Conderella 4th March 2017, 09:03 PM

Silvia Night *.*

Can't help but feel Hypnotised will win by a landslide and the best song will not.

Posted by: Ryan. 4th March 2017, 09:27 PM

Svala, Aron and Dadi through, I shall have to catch up on their performances!

Posted by: Conderella 4th March 2017, 09:28 PM

Yassss wildcard being Bambarramm

Posted by: Conderella 4th March 2017, 09:29 PM

At least one scandinavian country didnt disappoint

Posted by: AdamAloud 4th March 2017, 09:30 PM

Purely coincidental that the wildcard went to the act that put in a formal complaint about the handling of their performance I'm sure.

Posted by: Conderella 4th March 2017, 09:32 PM

Someone tweet Loreen the idea plz

Posted by: Ryan. 4th March 2017, 09:42 PM

Hypnotised is staged PERFECTLY, it'd be straight into the top 10 in Kyiv. I do think the Arons could cancel each other out in the final, although if one of them makes it I can imagine either of them winning the superfinal.

Posted by: Ryan. 4th March 2017, 09:45 PM

Svala's performance is pretty fab too though I'm not going to lie!

Posted by: AdamAloud 10th March 2017, 10:42 PM

TOMORROW'S NATIONAL FINAL...
ICELAND

Söngvakeppnin

11th March 2017
Begins at 7.45pm in Iceland and the UK, 8.45pm Central European Time.
The show is scheduled to last 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Watch the selection via the http://www.ruv.is/songvakeppnin.

Running order
01. Aron Hannes - Tonight
02. Arnar & Rakel - Again
03. Aron Brink - Hypnotized
04. Hildur - Bammbaramm
05. Rúnar Eff - Making Your Way Back Home
06. Svala - Paper
07. Daði Freyr - Is This Love?

Voting format
There will be two rounds of voting. The first round will be determined by 50% jury voting and 50% televoting, with the top 2 songs progressing to the super final. Here, the overall winner will be chosen by 100% televoting.

The favourites to win
Svala is the favourite win, if anyone were to cause an upset it'd be between Aron Hannes, Daði Freyr and Aron Brink.

Posted by: Conderella 10th March 2017, 11:01 PM

I would actually not be too upset if Is This Love won. It's so quirky and super catchy. Svala to slay though, there are no words to describe how I love Paper ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Hopefully the Aron overload in the first half will mean neither of them is winning. Let's hope.

Posted by: ScottyEm 10th March 2017, 11:06 PM

Paper to win and kick some belated arse in May.

Posted by: AdamAloud 10th March 2017, 11:07 PM

Paper is utterly sublime.

But I'm team Hypnotized tomorrow *.*

Posted by: Conderella 11th March 2017, 08:31 AM

Svala was a judge on The Voice so I hope the fans will vote. Because we can't have a winner decided by the entire population of 10 year olds in Iceland. Talking about Aron Brink of course. But I have a dark feeling Svala won't be winning and it's making my insides hurt

Posted by: Ryan. 11th March 2017, 08:35 AM

I feel like momentum is with Dadi if anyone so I can definitely see him winning from the pimp slot.

Posted by: AdamAloud 11th March 2017, 02:22 PM

Spotify in Iceland suggests Aron Hannes will be winning the televote tonight (Image courtesy of ESCNation)

Posted by: Conderella 11th March 2017, 03:56 PM

Arnal and Rakel apparently having either 10000s or negative streams.

Posted by: Conderella 11th March 2017, 03:57 PM

Surely Svala will slay the jury vote? And if the difference in the popular vote is small enough, not everything is lost.

Posted by: Ryan. 11th March 2017, 04:20 PM

Svala will be a cert for the superfinal, she could be joined by either Dadi (who I expect) or an Aron - but I think the Arons could split votes and jury won't love either.

Then it just depends on who the televoters prefer in the superfinal!

Posted by: Conderella 11th March 2017, 09:09 PM

Now that we had an okay winner in Sweden i am hoping for some quality here. Preferably Svala but Dathi will do as well

Posted by: Conderella 11th March 2017, 09:24 PM

How the f*** did they get Måns?!

Posted by: Conderella 11th March 2017, 09:30 PM

I guess it got worse for Greta judging by that outfit oops

Posted by: Conderella 11th March 2017, 10:11 PM

Yasssss its between Svala and Dathi *.*

Posted by: Ryan. 11th March 2017, 10:16 PM

Paper landslided the round 1 televote there, almost double Dathi's votes - a record for first round votes as well apparently under the current system. However, Maria and Greta both lost round 1 to their fellow superfinalist and turned it around in round 2, although both Maria and Greta were only 1,000 or less behind whereas Dathi is 20,000 behind.

Votes get wiped though so who knows? Svala fans, please don't get complacent!

Posted by: Conderella 11th March 2017, 10:50 PM

Yasssssss Svala

YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS NEW FAVOURITE

Posted by: Ryan. 11th March 2017, 10:51 PM

She's done it loves! I would've preferred Hypnotised but Svala is an amazing entry nevertheless.

80s inspired synthpop the tropical house of Eurovision it seems with Belgium, Azerbaijan and Iceland all taking (very) slight influences!

Posted by: AdamAloud 11th March 2017, 10:54 PM

WHAT AN ENTRY *.*

If this doesn't bring Iceland back to the final then I'm at a loss.

Posted by: Ryan. 11th March 2017, 11:00 PM

Official music video for those who have yet to see it!

Posted by: Cameron 11th March 2017, 11:03 PM

All the songs from the past few days have really saved the contest *.*

Posted by: Cal 12th March 2017, 04:29 PM

This is amazing. Shouldn't have expected anything less as I absolutely ADORE Steed Lord.

Posted by: djgrafdemon 12th March 2017, 08:44 PM

hoped for the best, now I wonder if this can qualify... seems like the first entry from Iceland in recent years that left me disappointed a lot.

Posted by: Liаm 12th March 2017, 09:25 PM

This is bloody incredible, it's challenging Blance and Anja to be my favourite entry of this year!

Posted by: Conderella 12th March 2017, 10:03 PM

Erm it would be quite ridiculous if this didn't qualify. The best Icelandic entry ever realness.

Posted by: Ryan. 13th March 2017, 01:34 AM

Who knew Svala was marketed as a Christina/Britney hybrid back in 2001, this apparently got airplay on MTV USA and UK and charted top 40 in the US. Her 6 album contract with Capitol was the biggest ever for an Icelandic artist.

Posted by: pippa 14th March 2017, 03:03 PM

This must qualify.
