1 Taylor Swift - Karma NEW

Taylor Swift is at the top again - this time with "Karma". She also reigned with "Anti-Hero" at the end of 2023. The question is whether she scored another number 1 in the meantime?
I missed the chart of February 18, 2023. For some reason during that period there were 2 editions of the chart broadcast on MTV Hits (which usually is the same as this one) - the chart-toppers in those 2 editions were another song by Taylor Swift - "Lavender Haze" - and "Boy's A Liar" by PinkPantheress.

1 Olivia Rodrigo - Vampire NEW

I had been wondering recently when Olivia Rodrigo would come back... Well, here she is and "Vampire" debuts straight at the top! It becomes her third number 1 after "Deja Vu" and "Good 4 U".
...But what about "Drivers License"?
It's complicated... While the song was a number 1 in MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20", it only peaked at number 2 in the European chart broadcast on MTV Europe...

5 Dave & Central Cee - Sprinter 3 Down
4 David Kushner - Daylight 1 Down
3 The Weeknd & Madonna - Popular NEW
2 Olivia Rodrigo - Vampire 1 Down
1 Anne-Marie & Shania Twain - Unhealthy NEW

The song at number 14 - "Barbie World" - uses as background music "Barbie Girl" by Aqua, which topped the chart in 1997. Aqua were last seen in the chart in 2000 with "Cartoon Heroes" - which actually also became number 1!
Thanks to Madonna's collaboration with The Weeknd on "Popular" she appears at number 3 this week. The last time she occupied a higher position in MTV Europe's European chart was in 2009, when "Celebration" peaked at number 2.
"Unhealthy" becomes Anne-Marie's third chart-topper after "Rockabye" (with Clean Bandit and Sean Paul) and "Kiss My" (with Little Mix).
...And what about Shania Twain?!...
In 1999 she appeared in the chart for the first time with "That Don't Impress Me Much" (it peaked at number 5). Then she reached number 2 in 2003 with "Ka-Ching!" - which remained her peak position... until now!
Because now, TWENTY-FOUR YEARS after her first appearance in MTV Europe's European chart and TWENTY YEARS after reaching number 2, Shania finally scores a number 1!

"What Was I Made For?" becomes the fifth number 1 of Billie Eilish after "Bad Guy", "Therefore I Am", "Your Power" and "NDA".
In addition, I'm not sure whether a similar situation to this week's edition of the chart has ever happened before - there are THREE songs from one and the same soundtrack (for "Barbie") in the Top 10: "What Was I Made For?", "Dance The Night" (which also topped the chart, 5 weeks ago) and "Barbie World".

Unbelievably, Jonas Brothers score their second number 1 with "Do It Like That" after "Wings" earlier in 2023.
As for TXT, they become the fourth South Korean group to reach the top in MTV Europe's European chart after BTS, BLACKPINK and Fifty Fifty.

4 Olivia Rodrigo - Vampire 2 Down
3 Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice & Aqua - Barbie World 3 Up
2 Jungkook - Seven 1 Up
1 Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For? 3 Up

THIS IS A HISTORIC EDITION OF THE CHART!
Until now, every single week during 2023 there was a new number 1! Now for the first time this year a song returns to the top - "What Was I Made For?" by Billie Eilish spends its second week there.
We had to wait until the middle of August to see an edition of the chart where the number 1 is not there for the first time...
This is actually a big accomplishment for Billie Eilish as all of her four previous chart-toppers - "Bad Guy", "Therefore I Am", "Your Power" and "NDA" - scored just one week at number 1.
And there are THREE songs from one and the same soundtrack (for "Barbie") in the Top 5: "What Was I Made For?" at the top, "Barbie World" at number 3 and "Dance The Night" at number 5.

Euro Top Chart - (as broadcast on MTV Europe)
Here is the chart of August 19, 2023:

20 Harry Styles - Daylight NEW
19 Jain - Makeba 2 Down
18 Halle - Angel NEW
17 Troye Sivan - Rush 4 Down
16 Calvin Harris & Sam Smith - Desire NEW
15 Kali - Area Codes 1 Down
14 Peggy Gou - It Goes Like Nanana 1 Up
13 Fifty Fifty - Cupid 2 Down
12 Stormzy & Raye - The Weekend Stay =>
11 TXT & Jonas Brothers - Do It Like That 1 Down
10 The Weeknd & Madonna - Popular 1 Down
9 Travis Scott, Bad Bunny & The Weeknd - K-POP 1 Down
8 David Kushner - Daylight 1 Down
7 Dave & Central Cee - Sprinter 1 Down
6 Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice & Aqua - Barbie World 3 Down
5 Olivia Rodrigo - Vampire 1 Down
4 Dua Lipa - Dance The Night 1 Up
3 Jungkook - Seven 1 Down
2 Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For? 1 Down
1 Zayn - Love Like This 19 Up

There are two songs titled "Daylight" simultaneously in the chart - by David Kushner at number 8; and by Harry Styles at number 20.
Another (ex) member of One Direction occupied the number 20 spot last week. However, now Zayn is at the opposite end of the chart as "Love Like This" jumps 19 places!
I think it's quite sad that Zayn scores his very first chart-topper in such an undeserving way... "Love Like This" hasn't been anywhere near as successful as his previous hits... yet until now Zayn always stopped at number 2! That was the peak position of three of his previous singles - both "Pillowtalk" and "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" (with Taylor Swift) spent two weeks at number 2 while "Dusk Till Dawn" (with Sia) did one step better as it spent THREE weeks at number 2...
Thus Zayn becomes the FOURTH member of One Direction to reach number 1 in MTV Europe's European chart as a solo artist. Harry Styles did it with "Sign Of The Times", "As It Was", "Late Night Talking" and "Satellite"; Niall Horan - with "Slow Hands" and probably "Heaven" (during the chart of March 4, 2023 - MTV Europe repeated the previous week's chart but "Heaven" was at the top in the corresponding edition of the chart broadcast on MTV Hits); and Liam Payne - with "For You" (with Rita Ora).
So only Louis Tomlinson is yet to reach number 1...
(By the way, One Direction haven't been able to top the chart as a group...)

1 Calvin Harris & Sam Smith - Desire 15 Up

Last week's number 1 and number 16 exchange their positions - "Love Like This" by Zayn falls 15 places while "Desire" by Calvin Harris and Sam Smith climbs 15 places.
This is the second collaboration of Calvin Harris and Sam Smith to become number 1 after "Promises" in 2018.
As a matter of fact, both artists have already topped the chart this year. Calvin Harris did it with "Miracle" (with Ellie Goulding). When it comes to Sam Smith, they reached number 1 with "Gimme" (with Koffee).

1 Doja Cat - Paint The Town Red 19 Up

Just 2 weeks ago Zayn climbed 19 places from the very bottom to the very top of the chart with "Love Like This". Now Doja Cat does the same with "Paint The Town Red". This is staggeringly her SIXTH number 1 after "Kiss Me More", "Need To Know", "You Right", "Vegas" and "Attention"...
However, "Paint The Town Red" might turn out to be the most deserving chart-topper of them all as it seems like it will actually become a big hit!

"Speed Drive" by Charlie XCX debuts at number 14. It joins "Barbie World" (at number 7), "Dance The Night" (at number 5) and "What Was I Made For?" (at number 3) and thus there are FOUR songs from one and the same soundtrack (for "Barbie") simultaneously in the chart! I really doubt that such a thing has ever happened before!
"Used To Be Young" becomes the third number 1 of Miley Cyrus in 2023 after "Flowers" and "River".

1 Selena Gomez - Single Soon 11 Up

V debuts at number 12 with "Love Me Again" and thus becomes the SIXTH member of BTS to appear in MTV Europe's European chart! It's absolutely certain that no group until now has had SIX of its members chart as solo artists!!!!!!
The other BTS members to chart as solo artists are Jungkook (who is incidentally currently at number 4 with "Seven"), Jin, RM, J-Hope and Jimin. Only Suga has yet to make an appearance here.
Selena Gomez scores her very first chart-topper with "Single Soon", which jumps 12-1. Before that her peak position was number 3 - achieved by "We Don't Talk Anymore", her duet with Charlie Puth.
