BuzzJack Music Forum _ Dance _ Just Us - Cloudbusting

Posted by: lewistgreen Nov 24 2016, 09:32 PM

Just Us is a collaborative project between Steven Lee and Carl Kennedy. Sampling Kate Bush's 'Cloudbusting' for their debut single, 'Everytime It Rains' has picked up widespread support from Radio 1 even though they are still unsigned!

EDIT: They got signed but have changed the name of the song and re-recorded it.

Heard it on radio as well <3

Uses the same Kate Bush sample as 'Something Good' tongue.gif

Liking this myself, great reworking dance.gif

Cool violin sound.

Posted by: The Emperor Nov 25 2016, 07:13 PM

I really like this....it is much better than the Utah Saints 2008 version anyway.

The violins are very good...a bit Freemasons - Uninvited sounding...although I prefer this one.

Big big sound dance.gif. I assume this'll have the 'You Want Me' and 'Trouble' treatment, get an official iTunes release in a few weeks and airplay support from then. biggrin.gif

I assume this is the right video? Production wise very mid 00s reminiscent indeed with the big sound and the funky violins (and also the fact it is an 80s remix).

This needs a release date NOW

Posted by: Taylor Jago Dec 4 2016, 10:33 AM

I usually consider anything that tries to rework Kate Bush a disaster from the get go but I actually do like this!

I mean, it's obviously not in the same league as the original, but it's decent enough. Probably because they kept her vocal instead of replacing it with some dreary warbling. I wouldn't mind seeing this become a hit.

Posted by: Auld Lang Snake Dec 31 2016, 08:00 PM

This could be the new Thunder In My Heart Again (remix of an old song by an iconic artist with funky violins in it), hoping it can be a hit early next year, any news on a release date?

good to see it's getting a release! was starting to think it'd never happen but then again we had to wait a long time for the 99 Souls official release and look how well that ended up doing.

Thank goodness...at least one funky house tune has a possibility of being a hit in 2017 dance.gif

Out 10th Feb according to Music Week!

(they should've kept the 'Everytime It Rains' title tho)

Posted by: mdh Feb 8 2017, 10:05 PM

YASSS. Assumably it'll do an Offaiah/Tom Zanetti and do pretty well on iTunes initially, but I'm so sure this is gonna be a massive hit in the long term!

Ughhhh I tend to HATE Kate Bush covers but I'll keep an open mind as this is SUCH an underrated gem and probably 3rd for me only behind Running Up That Hill and Wuthering Heights. I am so over old songs being ruined by dance remakes though, just write your own laugh.gif

Posted by: danG Feb 8 2017, 10:38 PM

This remake stays very true to the original! It's not another tropical house trend jumping remake, so you may even like it.

Oops I meant Wuthering Heights, that's like in my top 5 of all time wub.gif

Oh I've found the original and like it, at least it's actually Kate, I'm not sure about the singer on that clip :/ I am so fussy with people singing Kate, there are probably barely 5 covers of her songs I like but like I said it's amazing to see this get recognition properly (I know there was the Utah Saints track but that was just the little sample line).

Indeed thank goodness it is not tropical house (or future bass either). It is more 00s dance in style than today's, which is why I compared it to Thunder In My Heart Again , like it, it is a remix of a violin driven song, which keeps nearly all of the original sound as well as the structure. The only change iirc other than the addition of a dance beat compared to the original is a light whoosh sound for the drop and a couple of added funky disco strings in the chorus that weren't there in the original. dance.gif

Wow... this is actually quite good, it practically uses the original, it gives the track a fresh sound to it.

Never heard of Just Us, the production sounds like a Clean Bandit track with the use of violins, I wonder if Jess Glynne will return with a collaboration with Just Us.

I don't like it as much as the original remix that was originally played on Radio 1.

They seem to have got rid of the bit from 1:12 to 1:42 with the additional disco strings and disco house style looped vocals which was my favourite part of the song and made it different to the original. It seems to just be more of a straight cover now sadly.

I sort of agree, the finished version just seems incomplete in some way. huh.gif

The live rip in that video I posted flowed brilliantly, and had an amazing climax with additional strings that weren't in the original in the bit from 1:12 and disco house style looped vocals in the bit from 1:27 made it different to the original. As the finished version is it doesn't really add much to the original. It was also more of a progressive house song building to the climax from 1:12 and one near the end at 3:50 too.

The verse starting 'On Top Of The World' should have been replaced with the bit starting from 1:12 of the original live rip I think, that verse isn't really needed, a euphoric climax is needed there rather than another verse.

With all the hype at the end of 2016 surrounding the release of this song, I'm surprised it flopped so badly. I really thought it was going to be a hit. blink.gif

Still might, it is doing well enough on iTunes now it is now at #89 (not too bad considering the presence of the Ed Sheeran tracks) due to a couple of Radio 1 plays even in daytime according to the R1 schedules, looks like R1 might playlist it next week then.

Still wish it was the 'Everytime It Rains' version but by today's chart dance standards, 'Cloudbusting' is lively and less minimal so I would still like to see it go top 40.

I think it is the orchestralness of it and the talk about rain that reminds me of Cloudbusting! The Journey Continues does sound a bit Kate Bush-y too!

Posted by: danG Mar 28 2017, 03:19 PM

Annoyingly they've changed the version of it on Spotify, now it begins with the chorus and cuts out the middle 8 strings solo (which is like the best part of the song)

mad.gif

Posted by: awardinary™ Mar 28 2017, 03:22 PM

This release has been a right mess, why couldn't they have just stuck with Kate's vocals originally.

Well they cut out the best bit anyway imo on the Cloudbusting one, the original drop on Everytime It Rains.

I thought there was something different about it when I heard it this morning, more beats to the intro as wel instead of just strings

I feel like this is going to be a common occurrence of future songs aka the chorus starting the song. It's a tactic to attract more streams as people will go 'oo I like this song' rather than potentially going 'wtf is this, I don't know it' and skipping. Its like the tactic that commercial radio stations often use and I think Charli XCX's 'After the Afterparty' is really guilty of it, there's even that sound effect as if its going back to the original song, like what radio starions often use.

Posted by: danG Mar 28 2017, 10:42 PM

I hope that doesn't become the new norm, I don't want to feel like I'm listening to commercial radio and I've never been a fan of choruses being cheaply tacked in at the start of the song.

Still doesn't explain why they screwed up the middle eight either, or why they re-recorded the vocal again (or is that Kate? I'm not sure)

Posted by: Liаm Mar 29 2017, 11:40 AM

I feel like that actually is Kate ohmy.gif I should recognise if it's one of my all time faves remixed but I feel like it sounds a lot like her but not fully so perhaps it's a really good tribute act or something? Idk, there is one called Cloudbusting laugh.gif I 100% prefer the new vocal but I agree the chorus being first is really jarring. Not just because it was like that in the first place, I'd get used to that, but it also meant the original was a bit closer to this and the string introduction and "I still dream of Organon" just works.

Posted by: liamk97 Mar 30 2017, 01:37 PM

I usually dislike this sort of jumping on a popular song and just making it a little bit dancy as an easy way of achieving a hit (hello Jonas Blue's 'Fast Car'), but I actually quite like this! I think it helps that it basically emphasises the original components and gives them a 2017 HD experience and the vocal is as close to being Kate Bush's without actually being hers. There's no horrid breakdown or anything like that, it's as if Clean Bandit have done a cover of it.

Posted by: Вuzzjack Mar 30 2017, 02:57 PM

I am confused, Radio 1 was playing a version yesterday with the original climax from Everytime It Rains (the one I liked with a different strings tune to the original) after the first chorus. unsure.gif Can't remember the whole song but I think they must have played Everytime It Rains by accident instead of Cloudbusting ohmy.gif (great as it is a much better tune to Cloudbusting imo).

This is Everytime It Rains btw (minus the radio announcer of course). Carl Kennedy and Steven Lee are the members of Just Us. The climax with the different strings tune I am referring to is at 1:12.

Posted by: danG Mar 30 2017, 04:40 PM

I don't think it's a mistake, I also heard the other day Nick Grimshaw play the bootleg version of 'Cloudbusting'. Suppose they're allowed to play it on radio but don't have the rights to sell that version.

Posted by: lewistgreen Mar 30 2017, 05:02 PM

Radio 1 often play the original version of the track they started playing first or the one that had loads of hype when it was played by specialist shows.

If I recall correctly, they always played the bootleg version of Sigma's Nobody to Love and continued to play the original of Chris Malinchak's So Good To Me even though the vocals were changed for release.

Yes but those people that still download singles will download it on iTunes expecting it to be the same as the bootleg version ohmy.gif

The bootleg one is so much better as a dance record than the Spotify version imo, so I would rather Radio 1 play that version anyway. I love the way it builds to a euphoric climax after the first chorus with strings which are different to the original!
