The winner will be revealed on this date: 20/09/2018

Possible contenders:

Ghostpoet
Young Fathers

Liam Gallagher

Nadine Shah
Arctic Monkeys
Benjamin Clementine
Shame
Baxter Dury
GoGo Penguin
Jon Hopkins/Daniel Avery/George Fitzgerald (at least one of the three)

Jorja Smith

Personal wishlist: Bicep, Gwenno, Willie J Healey, Django Django, Robert Plant, Everything Everything, Gaz Coombes, Hookworms, King Krule, Superorganism, Boy Azooga, Years & Years, Phil Selway's Let Me Go (if a soundtrack album gets nominated like with Plan B's ill manors in 2012)

Posted by: lewistgreen Jul 14 2018, 03:53 PM

I REALLY want Bicep to be there. Genuinely the best dance album over the past year.

Posted by: SevenSeize Jul 14 2018, 03:58 PM

Let's Eat Grandma and Superorganism absolutely have to be on there!

Everything Everything deserve a spot by default after that fucking TRAVESTY of Get To Heaven being snubbed (i'm guessing it's unlikely though). another personal wish would be Cosmo Sheldrake's album but that's a bit too left field probably

I think they need their first nom since Man Alive in 2011

Ideal wishlist:

Parquet Courts
Young Fathers
George Fitzgerald
Jon Hopkins
Superorganism
Let's Eat Grandma
Bodega
Nilufer Yanya
Snail Mail
Everything Everything

Unfortunately I can't see any of them winning, aside from MAYBE Jon Hopkins?

Snail Mail and Bodega are from USA.
The entries have to be from artists based in UK and Ireland (and sometimes Scotland [Biffy Clyro, Belle And Sebastian] and Wales [Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics]), or have at least half of the members from Britain or Ireland in order to qualify.
Anthony And The Johnsons won the prize in 2005 with I Am A Bird Now, depsite being based in New York City, however at least half of the members (including the lead singer ANOHNI) were English-born so they managed to qualify.

I'd love to see LG be nominated, it would be well deserved after his successful comeback!

Posted by: SLlewellyn Jul 16 2018, 10:36 PM

I really hope Arctic Monkeys DON’T get nominated - so much more deserving records. Fingers crossed for Superorganism, Everything Everything, Jorja Smith, and George Ezra.

Posted by: blacksquare Jul 26 2018, 10:12 AM

Lily Allen: No Shame
Arctic Monkeys: Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino
Everything Everything: A Fever Dream
Everything Is Recorded: Everything Is Recorded
Florence + the Machine: High as Hope
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds: Who Built the Moon?
King Krule: The Ooz
Novelist: Novelist Guy
Nadine Shah: Holiday Destination
Jorja Smith: Lost and Found
Sons of Kemet: Your Queen is a Reptile
Wolf Alice: Visions of a Life

thoughts?

Posted by: DalekTurret32 Jul 26 2018, 10:14 AM

YAY for Arctic Monkeys, Everything Everything and King Krule!
No Bicep?

Posted by: blacksquare Jul 26 2018, 10:15 AM

I am shocked at what has to be the most mainstream list in years?

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Jul 26 2018, 10:21 AM

Arctic Monkeys 100% deserve to win.

If not them, I'd be happy with Everything Everything or Noel winning.

Posted by: SevenSeize Jul 26 2018, 10:22 AM

oh wow they actually nominated Everything Everything! <3 that alone should make this worthwhile (but the lack of Superorganism and Let's Eat Grandma is a total farce so this thing is still cancelled)

Sons of Kemet album is really good so I'd be down with the 'jazz pick' somehow winning this time

I was just thinking about how many albums I not only recognised but have listened to! laugh.gif

Posted by: blacksquare Jul 26 2018, 10:33 AM

I think it's a pretty awful list, especially when there are plenty of obvious omissions. Hookworms, SOPHIE, Let's Eat Grandma, Jon Hopkins, Young Fathers...

Nothing is quite as bad as Ed Sheeran making it last year though.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Jul 26 2018, 11:07 AM

Could a poll be added to this thread?

Posted by: Bjork Jul 26 2018, 11:07 AM

worst list ever, almost reads like a joke made-up list
Ben Howard should have been in that list
but they chose joke acts like Noel, best album ever, especially his cover of Ricky Martin-She Bangs :/

rather they give it to Jorja Smith, I'm a fan of Flo and AM but their albums are disappointing

Posted by: Bjork Jul 26 2018, 11:09 AM

this is like "List made by the NME" with the weekly payola from Noel and AM :/
should be renamed the Joke Prize

Posted by: Cremey Jul 26 2018, 11:12 AM

Shocked at no Young Fathers or SOPHIE nomination.
Really glad ‘No Shame’ is up there though, actually wasn’t expecting that.

Lily is the only one who deserves my vote wub.gif

Posted by: Chez Wombat Jul 26 2018, 01:25 PM

Feels such a dull list, all names that one can expect and have been relatively prominent even in just indie circles and no real risks at all apart from ofc. the token jazz nomination. I've always thought this to be the award that recognise under-the-radar genres and award music that isn't perhaps being as recognised as it should, but this list doesn't rlly reflect what likely any other award would so I'm wondering what the point is.

Posted by: mdh Jul 26 2018, 02:39 PM

What a shocking list. Everything Everything to win, please.

Posted by: Steve201 Jul 26 2018, 06:48 PM

No Father John Misty?

Wolf Alice for me!

Wolf Alice for me!

Father John Misty is ineligible as he is American!

(his album was fantastic though)

Posted by: gavindeejay Jul 26 2018, 07:22 PM

Out of that list I’d like to see Wolf Alice win!

Posted by: Midge Jul 26 2018, 07:53 PM

Was Isaac Gracie not eligible?

Also given some of those nominations, Snow Patrol have been robbed.

Posted by: Doctor Blind Jul 26 2018, 07:58 PM

I think out of those (quite disappointing if I'm honest) nominations, I think that King Krule would be my favourite - and I hope he wins. “Dum Surfer” is a bloody TUNE.

Posted by: SLlewellyn Jul 27 2018, 05:56 PM

Heard + love: Everything Everything, Florence and the Machine, Jorja Smith, Lily Allen, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Wolf Alice
Heard: Arctic Monkeys, Everything is Recorded, Novelist
Not heard: King Krule, Nadine Shah (in fact, I'd never even heard of her), Sons of Kemet (again, hadn't heard of them)

Hoping for Everything Everything or Lily Allen to win, though at the end of the day just being nominated is the achievement (though sad times for George Ezra, Liam Gallagher, Jon Hopkins, and Tom Misch).

I think all of them are brilliant, with 1-13 being candidates for my "favourite albums of all time" list.

Posted by: mdh Sep 19 2018, 04:44 PM

My top 3 would be

1. Everything Everything "A Fever Dream"
2. Sons Of Kemet "My Queen Is A Reptile"
3. King Krule "The Ooz"

Although I doubt any of those three will come anywhere near the top.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Sep 19 2018, 06:07 PM

My top 3:

1. Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino
2. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Who Built The Moon
3. Everything Everything - A Fever Dream

Posted by: Bjork Sep 19 2018, 06:41 PM

only semi-like the Florence album and even that is maybe a 5/10 :/
very poor choices in there especially Arctics and Noel
wouldn't be surprised if they give it to the Arctics

Wow... Amazing for Wolf Alice never expected for them to win it

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Sep 20 2018, 10:00 PM

After Sampha won last year, his single got to #92. Could Wolf Alice get their first ever charting single?

Posted by: Chez Wombat Sep 20 2018, 10:07 PM

A quite inspired choice compared to the acts there I guess, good for them, Don't Delete the Kisses is a great song.

Posted by: SLlewellyn Sep 20 2018, 10:53 PM

In the back of my mind something was telling me Lily Allen would nab it, but good for Wolf Alice! I had placed a bet on Everything Everything to win - that performance of "Night of the Long Knives" was just fantastic.

Posted by: Steve201 Sep 20 2018, 11:50 PM

That WOLfalice album is fantastic!

Posted by: Bjork Sep 21 2018, 05:22 AM

boo, for me it's almost like a worst album of the year prize :/
