So we've come to the end of another series of Doctor Who (the 10th since 2005 and the 36th (!) overall). This was the last full series of the 12th Doctor and saw the introduction of Bill Potts as his new companion. We also saw Nardole return as anoher full companion after his appearance in The Husbands of River Song. The series saw the return of the Ice Warriors, the Mondasian Cyberman, Missy and John Simm's Master! New threats also came from the Monks (in a three parter), emoji robots and a puddle. Which episodes were your favourite and which ones disappointed? This is your opportunity to rate each episode from 0 and 10 with one 11 allowed. xx The Return of Doctor Mysterio xx The Pilot xx Smile xx Thin Ice xx Knock Knock xx Oxygen xx Extremis xx The Pyramid at the End of the World xx The Lie of the Land xx Empress of Mars xx The Eaters of the Light xx World Enough and Time xx The Doctor Falls |

07.0 The Return of Doctor Mysterio
I've not seen this since Christmas so I'm a little bit vague on it by this point but it was good Christmas fun, if not entirely essential. The alien threat was cool and I'm actually surprised now that we didn't see them again in series 10, I think I might've preferred them over the monks? It certainly felt like it was setting up the series ahead anyway. I enjoyed Nardole, and the supporting cast were good but the superhero and alien threat parts were entirely separate for most of the episode. Fun for Christmas but not hugely essential. 08.5 The Pilot Strong opening episode, love the introduction to Bill and the mystery of the Vault is set up well. The puddle wasn't the most exciting threat but I guess episodes like this often lack on the plot side in favour of setting up the new companion, and they did that brilliantly so no complaints I guess. The Dalek scene felt a little bit pointless and a way of shoehorning in Pearl's introduction scene from last year, but it didn't detract from the episode. Ultimately it kinda set the tone for the rest of the series - solid, enjoyable episode but not a classic. 09.0 Smile I really enjoyed this one, partly due to the fact it was almost a two-hander for a lot of it. Peter and Pearl's chemistry sells the episode brilliantly, and Bill is such a breath of fresh air, with no strings attached - just a young girl who wants to see the universe. I liked the Emojibots, which were nowhere near as cringeworthy as they could've been, although the solution of basically hitting the reset button was what lets it down. 07.0 Thin Ice I think this was my least favourite of the main series, which I guess is pretty good going cause I most definitely did enjoy it. I think what lets this episode down for me is that we don't get much in the way of an explanation as to what the creature is, or why it's there (unless I missed some details, I've not rewatched it yet). The threat ultimately feels a little bit weak, but once again, it's a fun episode and Peter and Pearl carry it really well, particularly when it comes to the discussion of racism in those days. 07.5 Knock Knock An episode that promised so much and started off so well but tailed off a bit at the end! The haunted house concept was great, and the supporting cast, while not spectacular, seemed to be good fits for the episode at least. The bugs could've been a little bit more interesting but while David Suchet was superb, his character and his stone daughter wasn't quite the reveal I wanted. Once again, not bad by any means, but not quite as good as I'd hoped. 09.0 Oxygen This is more like it! A really interesting concept with the spacesuits, and it felt brilliantly executed too within the claustrophobic base-under-siege style setting. I actually think there was more they could've done too, so perhaps a two-parter might've been good so we could learn more about the supporting characters? The Doctor becoming blind was a great twist, and I'm glad it wasn't solved quite so easily. 09.5 Extremis The only episode I've rewatched thus far, and that was just so I could get all the details! Extremis confused me at first, I felt lost until the final 10 minutes or so, but with my second viewing, I realised it was a pretty genius concept for an episode. The comedy scenes were perfect, such as the Pope interrupting Bill's date (!!) and Nardole's "nothing secret about it, babydoll", but the serious scenes were executed great too. For the average viewer, this was surely a total mindf*** and I know my parents were totally confused, but this is one of my favourite "confusing" Moffat stories because the concept was so unique, with the simulation. My criticism is that the scenes with Missy felt a bit out of place, and made the episode harder to follow than necessary. 08.5 The Pyramid at the End of the World Not quite as good as the episode before and the pacing was a bit messy but I really liked what we saw of the Monks in this episode, and their need for consent. The lab stuff was interesting too and I loved how the two locations became interwoven with each other. The idea that the Doctor's blindness could kill him in the lab was brilliant, and it felt realistic that Bill would give consent to save him. 08.0 The Lie of the Land A bit of a mess but I can't say I didn't find it pretty gripping TV. I enjoyed the general concept of the Monks taking over Earth and planting the idea that they've always been there into people's minds, but I wish we saw more of that side of things. The fake-out regeneration was a bit silly and the conclusion felt underwhelming, particularly as the Doctor said Bill would die if she tried to erase the Monks from history, but she didn't? A mixed bag, could've been executed better, but I definitely enjoyed it. 09.0 Empress of Mars A pretty standard episode but it was very much welcomed after the Monks trilogy. I enjoyed the return of the Ice Warriors and felt they were utilised better here than in Cold War. Wasn't so keen on Nardole being written out so quickly although I guess he wasn't due to star in this at all initially so it does make sense. The cameo from Alpha Centauri was a fantastic little addition and the geek in me very much enjoyed that What I didn't like was the idea of the humans being from Victorian times - it felt incredibly unrealistic and whilst Doctor Who always requires a suspension of belief, this felt like a step too far. Nevertheless, a solid episode. 08.0 The Eaters of Light Pretty enjoyable, and for once I actually thought the supporting characters were rather well developed (although still not quite on the level of many RTD era characters). The creature seemed pretty interesting although it didn't really get used to its full abilities, especially as it was said to be able to devour the entire world or whatever. An interesting concept and an enjoyable episode but 11.0 World Enough and Time Where do I start? I think this could be my favourite episode of the Moffat era. It was scary, tense and gripping from start to finish. Bill being shot was a huge shock, and a bold move considering it was relatively graphic for a show aimed partly at kids! The patients at the bottom of the ship were absolutely horrifying, as was the idea that they're constantly in pain but their volume is simply turned down. Really dark stuff. It didn't twig with me that Razor was the Master until just a few minutes before the reveal either, although I wouldn't have guessed at all had they kept his return a secret! Him tricking Bill into being converted was really shocking and incredibly sad when the Doctor arrived and found he was too late, plus finally, the Cybermen actually felt scary! The whole cast were on top form and Moffat really seems to be saving his best for last, just a shame we knew about the returns of the Cybermen and John Simm in advance (I guess the former was necessary for the street scenes but still). 10.0 The Doctor Falls A common feature of the Moffat era seems to be that part 2 is never as good as part 1, and although I'd say it's true of this episode, it's not such a drastic difference because this was also excellent and World Enough and Time was always gonna be hard to top. The pace and tone of this episode was pretty different to its opening part, but it worked really well. The idea of switching between human and Cyber Bill to emphasise her state of mind was perfect, and both Peter and Pearl gave one of their best performances to date. The Cybermen seemed to take a back seat but I still enjoyed them more than usual, and the newer designs didn't feel out of place. John Simm and Michelle Gomez had exceptional chemistry and it was the perfect multi-Master story, as they both end up killing each other! Perfect. The endings for Bill and Nardole both felt quite appropriate, and I find it quite sad that none of them really know what became of each other in the end. Overall Series 10 didn't end up being quite as good as I'd hoped on the whole, but it's certainly the most consistent series for a while. Peter, Pearl and Matt are one of my favourite TARDIS teams, and they carry a lot of the episodes where the plot may be lacking. Unfortunately a number of episodes slipped into "great concept, poor execution" territory. Nothing truly bad, but a lot of wasted potential with some superb concepts (students living in a haunted house, an old folklore explored, Monks taking over the planet <- all a bit wasted). I'd be interested to see how much these scores change with repeat viewings! Thankfully, the finale was exceptional and was quite comfortably the best story of the series. |

05.0 The Return of Doctor Mysterio
Thoughts - This is my least favourite because while it is fun it didn't excite me as a plot. The supporting cast wasn't great if I am honest too. I however, like the baddies and would like them to feature again. Seemed rather filler on the whole. 07.0 The Pilot Nice good episode to start the series with. I liked Bill in this episode although we are never enticed by her until the later episodes. I like her story with Heather too who was a nice character to have. 08.0 Smile I loved this episode would have been a 9 if the ending was done better. None the less, I loved the chemistry between Doctor and Bill and the care they had for each other was really nice. I also loved the dark undertone to this about how robots can't tell emotions and if you are sad they have to kill you. 07.0 Thin Ice This is an episode where while does have great character development from Bill i.e her empathy, shock and her all round human reactions to the death of the boy. I thought the monster and villain to be rather weak. Plus 1 for tackling racism in that day and age. 10.0 Knock Knock I personally loved this episode. I loved the supporting cast and wish they were shown again as they were friends of Bill. The house is creepy and the main villain is just as creepy. The ending wasnt as exciting as I thought but was a nice change to see people get saved rather than die. So contrast to the last episode. 09.0 Oxygen I love the political undertone to this episode. Added some great character moments from Bill and doctor., particular when he goes blind. The ending made sense to me to but on the whole a rather good rewatchable episode. 07.5 Extremis I found this episode rather confusing at first because I never got what was going on. I re-watched it and understood it more. The introduction of the monks left me with intrigue and I also liked whole virtual reality twist. Not forgetting some hilarious moments from Bill and Nardole. 07.0 The Pyramid at the End of the World I personally thought this had a lot going on at once just needed to be simplified a bit. I rather liked the monks though still on the whole my least favourite of the three parter. 08.0 The Lie of the Land This was such a good episode. I loved Bill's reaction to finding the doctor on the ship and the tense conversation that followed. I love the whole propaganda and fake news theme that follows along with the scene where soldiers tape recorder got broke so he became Immune to the doctor's change of what the fake news/lie was. My only criticism is the whole ending where Bill's love for her mom conquered all and the monk's exit fell very flat to me. 06.0 Empress of Mars Equally my weakest of the proper series along with the next one.I didn't warm to the Ice Warriors that much If I am honest just never invested in this episode as I would usually. The Ice Warriors felt more like CBBC Sarah Jane Adventures type of villains to me. I loved the cameo from Alpha Centauri at the end too. 06.0 The Eaters of the Light Again a weak villain but nice character moment from Bill where she came out to the Romans and they were surprisingly okay with it. The scene with Missy at the end pretty much saved it. 11.0 World Enough and Time Such a chilling episode. It's been ages since I have proper been hooked on an episode. First of all, the time slowing down at part of the ship was such a unique part of the story. Adds to some character moments from both Doctor and Bill. Secondly, the scenes with the patients in that room were very creepy and chilling. Finally, I loved the John Simms return as the master as well as the original Cybermen designs coming back. My only wish was I wish I didn't know the Master or Cyberman return as both would have been huge reveals as both got a lot of hints. Loved this episode though. 10.0 The Doctor Falls I loved this episode too. My highlight was the story for Bill where she combated that she was indeed human rather than a Cyberman. Elsewhere, the master and Missy chemistry was phenomenal and the fact they caused each other's death was satisfying . The exits for Nardole and Bill could have been better in my opinion but all round good and a nice shocker of a cliffhanger. Side note my other small critic is that My only criticism the Cybermen were not utilized in the second part as they were in the first like although we didn't see Bill as the Cybermen until the end we saw hints and really chilling scenes before. Then they just didn't have that scary edge in the second episode. Overall Enjoyable series although not as much as I thought I was going to. Thought Monks could have been used more same with Cyberman in the second half of the two parter. Nice run of episodes and Bill is now one of my favourite conpanions. |

08 The Pilot 08 Smile 08 Thin Ice 06 Knock Knock 09 Oxygen 09 Extremis 08 The Pyramid at the End of the World 07 The Lie of the Land 05 Empress of Mars 05 The Eaters of the Light 11 World Enough and Time 09 The Doctor Falls i'll save my comments for the results, don't want to be repeating myself It was a solid series overall, it just lacked stronger highlights and, once again, compelling monsters. The Monks could have been great villains but I don't think their potential was utilised effectively. I liked the general feel of The Lie of the Land but I don't think it was executed as well as it should have been. Bill definitely helped to benefit my opinions for the first three episodes. |

I wish I wasn't so behind on watching this series! I would have posted my thoughts about each one but it'd mean a long out of place post and I'd risk reading spoilers *puts them messily in the rate instead*
5.5 The Return of Doctor Mysterio - Just seemed too much like a superhero episode than a Doctor Who sci-fi episode tbh (although I still like superhero shows!) 8 The Pilot - this was actually a great way to introduce the series. 7 Smile (down a little because emojis etc.) but a decent episode other than the loose ended ending 6 Thin Ice - this one seemed a bit dull and I wasn't much of a fan of the plot either. I might grow on it after watching it again 7.5 Knock Knock - I did like the mysteriousness of this one. 9 Oxygen - oh yess finally a classic outerspace themed episode I loved the idea of the future being a complete mess and people having to pay money to breathe :') the ending where it's revealed the Doctor is still blind was cool. 9 Extremis - I have a thing for storylines involving people being unsure of what's real or not, even themselves. Amy's Choice teas! The ending of the episode was great, how the Doctor recorded it all and sent himself an email 11 The Pyramid at the End of the World - This episode slayed. The storyline, the monks (and how they saw the types of consent), the danger etc. the situation the Doctor was in to make him admit of his blindness was well executed too. 10 The Lie of the Land - another monk episode and such a fab continuation. It reminded me of the end of S6 when the timelines were a mess after River refused to kill the Doctor. The false scenario of the Doctor regenerating was great as well, and the ending was very emotional 10 Empress of Mars - I'm so happy that the Ice Warriors had a full modern episode for them. It was very much like the Silurian episodes too with how the humans reacted to the warriors and vice versa. And I loved how they made peace with each other and both races showed their compassion, which I didn't think would happen after seeing quite a few shots taken to the warriors. Not to mention Victorians being so out of place (which the show has done before a few times and always works out great). Brilliant! 9 The Eaters of the Light - This could be pretty much a 10 but I've given out four of them already and want them to be ranked higher loved the CGI of the creatures and the whole "three sided" conflict with the humans and how they had to work together. The ending (showing they've been on top form this series ) was also well played and I loved seeing how adamant she was in guarding the gate which the Doc was very against! The thing about the crows talking until a couple of thousand years ago was hilarious 10 World Enough and Time - yass at Missy becoming a protagonist the scenes where she shows remorse are rather touching. Despite the show only recently having a companion convert a companion to a cyberman (Danny, and before that to an extent Craig) the ways Bill was converted were interesting. The Girl Who Waited style of time passing differently in different places is what I enjoy seeing too (upsetting at the same time for the companions!) seeing classic cybermen was also a highlight and I knew John Simm would be returning and his review was unexpected too  Missy pretending to be on the Master's side was acted well and I wasn't sure what to think at that point. Love a bit of suspense 10 The Doctor Falls - This could be my least (or second to least following the Death in Heaven episode) finale but the scene with Missy and Master was probably my favourite and it was well scripted. It IS a shame that we lose Missy JUST when she was becoming part of the team but I suppose she's no River and the show did make the right decision with killing her off. The Doctor getting shot my a basic cyberman (lol) was a bit sudden but good all the same, and it was great to see Heather return in the way she did. How very similar it compared to Clara travelling with Me (did Bill not know about regeneration then? I'm sure she would'nt have gone if she did). Regarding the Doc's "regeneration" in a way I did like how he was refusing to change but I think he's done that sort of thing before and it seemed a lil repetitive now. I'm very excited to see how the closing scene with Doc12 and Doc1 will play out! Only thing is (iirc) the next episode is a Christmas special and I'm not sure if it'll be as exciting as it might have been if the following episode was a regular episode. Pretty good series overall I think! It was the last series I think that had a few more dull moments than this one, although there were some great uses of sarcastic humour this series and there were some great storylines/characters. Bill does have some good companion qualities like empathy and enthusiasm but there's a few things she doesn't have, or at least as much as others did have in the past. I think one of them is not influencing the Doctor as much as previous companions, but that's probably just because she's not as confrontational. Nardole did seem to get too much after a while and his quirky character didn't really fit as a regular in the series I thought. He's great when he was less occuring and didn't feel like "forcing" humour into the show. This post has been edited by සුනුවිසුනු වී ඇත: 21st July 2017, 07:57 PM |
