https://www.mixcloud.com/1869300/uk-top-40-...-5th-july-1992/ Here is the chart for 5 July 1992... with Top 5 debuts for Smart E's(!) and Jimmy Nail - at the time the #3 debut by Christopher Howell, Tom Orton and Nick Arnold (Smart E's) was the joint-highest ever for a uncharted act matching the #3 debut by Crystal Waters' “Gypsy Woman” a year earlier. The track is based around the piano refrain from the theme from Sesame Street and latched on to the so-called Toytown Techno trend of remixing children's TV theme/information films into rave tracks that was started with The Magic Roundabout sampling Mark Summers “Summers Magic” in 1990. That was eventually a #27 hit early the following year - and was followed quickly by the Prodigy's “Charley” which stormed into the UK Top 10 months later. This trend appeared to reach its peak this month with the #11 by Urban Hype “A Trip To Trumpton” being a remix of the theme from Trumpton, and would the following week jump to #6. No idea why Jimmy Nail was so popular at the time (Auf Wiedersehen, Pet?) but “Ain't No Doubt” was his first hit in 7 years, went straight in at #5 and would be the song that would depose the current #1 the following week. Erasure sat at number 1 for their fifth and final week at the chart summit with their only ever #1 in a career of 16 Top 10 hits - The “ABBA-Esque EP” - a four track EP of ABBA covers, featuring among others “Take a Chance on Me” which was played in the re-cap at the head of the show and “Lay All Your Love On Me” which was played at the end, and was the one I assume with most of the video/airplay, although videos were made for all four tracks. Lots of other new entries here, including the rather bizarre but wonderful Was (Not Was) at 20 with Kim Bassinger and Ozzy Osbourne on vocal duties- I kid you not! http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singl.../19920705/7501/ WKS - LW - TW - Artist - SONG 05 - 01 - 01 - Erasure - ABBA-ESQUE (EP) ***5th WEEK AT No.1*** 03 - 02 - 02 - Mariah Carey - I'LL BE THERE 01 - NE - 03 - Smart E's - SESAME'S TREET 10 - 03 - 04 - Richard Marx - HAZARD 01 - NE - 05 - Jimmy Nail - AIN'T NO DOUBT 02 - 13 - 06 - Snap! - RHYTHM IS A DANCER 06 - 05 - 07 - Utah Saints - SOMETHING GOOD 02 - 06 - 08 - Electronic - DISAPPOINTED 05 - 04 - 09 - Nick Berry - HEARTBEAT 04 - 10 - 10 - Diana Ross - ONE SHINING MOMENT 01 - NE - 11 - Urban Hype - A TRIP TO TRUMPTON 12 - 07 - 12 - KWS - PLEASE DON'T GO 01 - NE - 13 - U2 - EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING 05 - 08 - 14 - George Michael - TOOFUNKY 02 - 26 - 15 - Roy Orbison - I DROVE ALL NIGHT 02 - 16 - 16 - Altern 8 - HYPNOTIC ST-8 02 - 27 - 17 - Sophie B Hawkins - DAMN I WISH I WAS YOUR LOVER 06 - 09 - 18 - Take That - IT ONLY TAKES A MINUTE 03 - 12 - 19 - Def Leppard - MAKE LOVE LIKE A MAN 01 - NE - 20 - Was (Not Was) - SHAKE YOUR HEAD 04 - 11 - 21 - Orb - BLUE ROOM 02 - 37 - 22 - Joe Cocker - UNCHAIN MY HEART 06 - 14 - 23 - Elton John - THE ONE 01 - NE - 24 - Dina Carroll - AIN'T NO MAN 04 - 15 - 25 - Tori Amos - CRUCIFY 04 - 21 - 26 - B-52's - GOOD STUFF 01 - NE - 27 - Wet Wet Wet - LIP SERVICE 02 - 31 - 28 - Sinitta - SHAME SHAME SHAME 1 - NE - 29 - Jose Carreras And Sarah Brightman - AMIGOS PARA SIEMPRE (FRIENDS FOR LIFE) 04 - 20 - 30 - Messiah - TEMPLE OF DREAMS 07 - 17 - 31 - Kris Kross - JUMP 01 - NE - 32 - Sonic Youth - 100% 01 - NE - 33 - Iron Maiden - FROM HERE TO ETERNITY 02 - 22 - 34 - Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine - DO RE ME SO FAR SO GOOD 03 - 23 - 35 - Urban Shakedown - SOME JUSTICE 04 - 19 - 36 - TLC - AIN'T 2 PROUD 2 BEG 01 - NE - 37 - Del Amitri - BE MY DOWNFALL 01 - NE - 38 - DJ Seduction - COME ON 01 - NE - 39 - Praga Khan - RAVE ALERT 02 - 42 - 40 - Bump - I'M RUSHING 08 - 28 - 41 - Guns n' Roses - KNOCKIN' ON HEAVEN'S DOOR 03 - 32 - 42 - Londonbeat - YOU BRING ON THE SUN 04 - 18 - 43 - U2 - EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING 01 - NE - 44 - Joe Public - LIVE AND LEARN 01 - NE - 45 - Various Artists - FOURPLAY (EP) 01 - NE - 46 - Sabrina Johnston - I WANNA SING 04 - 25 - 47 - Loose Ends - HANGIN' ON A STRING (KNUCKLES REMIX) 01 - NE - 48 - Thomas Dolby - I LOVE YOU GOODBYE 03 - 34 - 49 - Kim Wilde - HEART OVER MIND 02 - 48 - 50 - Farm - RISING SUN 01 - NE - 51 - Finitribe - FOREVERGREN 05 - 38 - 52 - Beautiful South - BELL BOTTOMED TEAR 04 - 29 - 53 - Crowded House - FOUR SEASONS IN ONE DAY 03 - 30 - 54 - Kym Sims - A LITTLE BIT MORE 06 - 33 - 55 - Cyndi Lauper - THE WORLD IS STONE 01 - NE - 56 - Curtis Stigers - SLEEPING WITH THE LIGHTS ON 05 - RE - 57 - Arrested Development - TENNESSEE 01 - NE - 58 - Thousand Yard Stare - SPINDRIFT (EP) 05 - 35 - 58 - Oceanic - CONTROLLING ME 09 - 36 - 60 - Ugly Kid Joe - EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU 02 - 51 - 61 - Fish - SOMETHING IN THE AIR 03 - 24 - 62 - Megadeth - SYMPHONY OF DESTRUCTION 01 - NE - 63 - Ragga Twins And Junior Reid - SHINE EYE 05 - 40 - 64 - Manic Street Preachers - MOTORCYCLE EMPTINESS 02 - 41 - 65 - Jesus And Mary Chain - ALMOST GOLD 03 - 39 - 66 - Prince And The New Power Generation - THUNDER 02 - 43 - 67 - Gun - WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD 03 - 44 - 68 - Des'ree - WHY SHOULD I LOVE YOU? 06 - 47 - 69 - Incognito - DON'T YOU WORRY 'BOUT A THING 02 - 60 - 70 - Celine Dion - IF YOU ASKED ME TO 02 - 68 - 71 - Tom Jones - DELILAH 04 - 45 - 72 - Martyn Joseph - DOLPHINS MAKE ME CRY 03 - 46 - 73 - House Of Love - YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND 01 - NE - 74 - Hue And Cry - PROFOUNDLY YOURS 05 - 52 - 75 - Prefab Sprout - THE SOUND OF CRYING |

“Motorcycle Emptiness” by the Manics is probably my fave here - I loved a lot of their 90s output but that was their peak for me. : )

I used to obsess over Erasure around this period and I was so happy when they got to #1, even if it was with a covers EP. I still like their version of Lay All Your Love On Me and they did choose the best ABBA track to lead with.
