Sunday Chart Predictions
Predicting the 14/12 to 20/12 chart

Will bringing 'Uptown Funk' from the horizon drown Oliver's chances of #1?
This chart marks a rather mysterious one since, as things stand today, there is no clear idea as to what will be #1 tomorrow or next weekend. Oliver Heldens & K Stewart's 'Last All Night (Koala)' is a hot contender although, after surprising all and shooting to the top spot on iTunes with 'Drown', British metalcore band Bring Me the Horizon could potentially claim the top spot in tomorrow's update. The physical copy of Band Aid 30's charity single has been released which could also disrupt things at the top. Not only this, but following its release date being brought forward six weeks to today, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' 'Uptown Funk' could snatch the number one before the end of the week. Elsewhere in the chart, new entries should come from Fifth Harmony's 'Bo$$' and CHVRCHES' 'Get Away'.

With a busy week of promotion, Ed Sheeran could re-climb to #1 with x for a 10th week. Previous #1s from Take That, One Direction, Sam Smith and George Ezra are continuing to sell well which could see them all complete the Top 5. Popular new entries this week should include Union J's You Got It All - The Album and Bastille's VS. (Other People’s Heartache, Pt. III), with others coming from Andre Rieu, J. Cole, Smashing Pumpkins and The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies OST and re-entries from Collabro and Sam Bailey.

Predictions:

01 (NE) Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars "Uptown Funk"
02 (01) Ed Sheehan "Thinking Out Loud"
03 (12) Band Aid 30 "Do They Know It's Christmas"
04 (04) Taylor Swift "Blank Space"
05 (NE) Oliver Heldens ft. KStewart "Last All Night (Koala)"

Union J to fall 2-18.

Posted by: FrostytheWallaby 8th December 2014, 10:26 PM

Possibly the most unpredictable chart of the year? Although Mark Ronson are probably looking like a safe number 1 even without Sunday sales/streams. I'm really interested to see how Band Aid's physical sells, can't really predict it, it'll need something big to make up for this huge decline.

Posted by: Dobbo 8th December 2014, 10:26 PM

Oh so Uptown Funk has been brought forward? Sensible decision really. Might still not be enough to dislodge Sheeran.

Posted by: Reindeer Froot 8th December 2014, 10:32 PM

Mark Ronson for number one cheer.gif

Posted by: Robbie 8th December 2014, 10:32 PM

We may get one or two more Christmas songs in the chart tomorrow as both iTunes and Google Play are selling a number of them at knockdown prices.

iTunes has a number of Christmas songs for 59p including The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl, Wizzard and Bing Crosby. Google Play are selling them for a mere 19p! In addition to the three acts mentioned Google Play also have Slade, Shakin' Stevens and John Lennon for 19p. And even more of a bargain - both 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' by Mariah Carey and 'Last Christmas' by Wham are currently free to download on Google Play. I don't know if sales from Google Play of the last two tracks will be chart eligible though. However, if they were sold for a mere penny then they definitely would be chart eligible so long as Google Play pays the minimum dealer price of 40p to the record label so does selling them for 1p less make those sales chart ineligible?

Posted by: SNOWING ADAM 8th December 2014, 10:32 PM

But Gecko had a bit of streaming support. So it may end up like this:

  1. Uptown Funk
  2. Koala
  3. Band Aid
  4. Taylor
  5. TOL (Fingers crossed!)

sales will probably get Baid #2 and Taylor #3.

Posted by: Dobbo 8th December 2014, 10:37 PM

It is all a bit up the air this week but that's exactly why it's so interesting! Already had a fair few changes of iTunes #1 this week and could be in store for more. Incredibly open, just a shame some have a massive streaming advantage because if it were a sales only week I would have absolutely no idea who'd be #1!

Posted by: Doctor Blind 8th December 2014, 10:40 PM

It's not up in the air at all. Mark Ronson will very easily be number 1 on sales, and quite possibly Top 10 on streaming too. Had he not been released then the #1 on sales only would've been difficult to call but there would have been no stopping Ed Sheeran on yet another low sales week.

Posted by: Santa Martin 8th December 2014, 11:09 PM

Uptown Funk should easily dislodge Ed Sheeran 57k for last week should easily surpassed 95k+ surely, it be interesting to see how well Band Aid 30 will do on physicals, also not forgetting all the promo on TV with Ed performing, its going to be an interesting week.

Its a shame really as it might go back to #1 in the new year, after the X Factor winners single, if the track gets there. If Fleur wins she might even release her version of Uptown Funk as her winners single, Simon knows he be on the money with it.

Posted by: girl_from_oz 8th December 2014, 11:11 PM

I wonder where Fleur would have ended up if her song had been allowed to chart, also Uptown Funk being brought forward could actually cost the x-factor winner a number one

Posted by: GTH 8th December 2014, 11:17 PM

Will be interesting to see how well the Band Aid 30 physical CD is selling. Will get a better idea of how much it will impact the chart tomorrow. Unless that sells a ridiculously large amount, I can't see anyone beating Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars this week.

There's no way they'd be allowed to do that. You can't just push a single that is a cover of a song that's been released the week before, especially one that's guarenteed to be at least Top 2 laugh.gif

I can guarantee the XF winner won't be in any danger laugh.gif i'm assuming that Sam Bailey's piss-poor sales from last year were just a blip and the winner (i'm guessing it's likely this Fleur East person will win?) will be back to selling around 300k+ or so~

It would be a turn up for the books if Cowell got Uptown Funk to be the winners single but I doubt he'd get the permission. At any rate this should be the most interesting week of the year with Band Aid, Bfing me the Horizon and stack of ofher tracks getting loads of promo - roll on the update tomorrow and Wednesday!

Posted by: Michael Bubré 8th December 2014, 11:42 PM

Why would 'Uptown Funk' be the winner's single when it'll have been out for a week already?

Posted by: HonkBonkXMAS 8th December 2014, 11:50 PM

It won't happen but I'd love UF to be Christmas number 1.

but anyway it's pretty much a given it will be #1 this week giving Bruno his first #1 since 'The Lazy Song' IIRC ohmy.gif

Was funny in our big Asda yesterday! The lass making the instore announcements said "Band Aid single now instore, all money going to fight Ebola, oh sorry, half of it goes to charity" Really? I thought it was all profits! A couple of people muttering that it was only half so they wouldn't bother then. ohmy.gif

Whatever happens the XF winner & Uptown Funk should be big sellers in xmas week this year!

Posted by: slowdown73 9th December 2014, 11:31 AM

Mark Ronson could be a strong contender for xmas no1. Its clearly a popular song given its rapid climb to no1 on itunes within a short period and fact that a live performance from an x factor act has also been no1 on itunes. I hope it beats the x factor christmas release.

Posted by: MrIndependent 9th December 2014, 11:38 AM

TOL might actually have taken quite a hit in today's midweek update since the highest version was as low as #7 yesterday. Don't get too excited, though, SNOWINGADAM, because any drop it has today will be made up for as the week progresses, especially if Ed performs it at the BBC Muic Awards on Thursday.

If Fleur East wins on Sunday, I'm positive her sales will be far more impressive than Sam Bailey's, she could easily double that. Hopefully she be given a better track than a power ballad. A power ballad does not really suit Fleur, she needs something upbeat, maybe a cover of a Whitney Houston/Janet Jackson track would suit her far better. And if the track is really good could stay for a second week. And the following week Mark Ronson could return 1-2-2-1. Just thought I put it out there funky.gif

I'd love for this year's winner's single to not be the usual dreary ballad. I guess the song(s) in question are being recorded by the artists this week, so hopefully we'll soon find out.

Posted by: HonkBonkXMAS 9th December 2014, 12:22 PM

As long as it ain't 'All of Me or "Say something' then we'll be fine. I'm actually wishing X Factor misses it. Kinda bored of their stranglehold each year except 2009, 11 & 12 when they missed due to campaigns / charity records.

Posted by: krissykins 9th December 2014, 12:27 PM

I really hope X Factor change their minds and release the sales for all the performances that charted on iTunes, plus which position they would have been that week.

But they won't.

Fleur deserves number 1. So infuriating that Ronson and Mars haven't even acknowledged her. Or that she got their song to number 1.

It's not her song in the first place so she doesnt deserve to be no1 by doing a lazy cover. I also think the song would have done well anyway without her input.

I know that but it depend on the artist when it comes to the winners sales. Clear Fleur East would have a bigger following amongst younger fans and is more what is appealing in the charts!

Am I the only one who doesn't like this uptown funk rubbish? It's a lazy song which doesn't really go anywhere. I disliked fleurs version and I think the actual version is even worse! And I also think it's stupid that producers like mark ronson and calvin harris think that they can put their own name down as an artist when they've only produced the song. Sorry for the rant lol.

I think the song sounds quite refreshing in the chart at the minute - very Michael Jackson sounding and different to alot of other music!

Yes because the producing the song is such a small and insignificant role.

According to OCC Mark Ronson is at #22 at the moment (after Dec 8 sales)

No you're definitely not the only one smile.gif I don't think it's a bad song, I just don't seem to find it anywhere near as amazing as everyone else seems to. Having said that, I quite enjoyed Fleur's version of it but that was probably for the performance as a whole. Oh well, I guess we're just going to have to get used to the song though cos it's going to be EVERYWHERE over the next few months...

Wouldn't call it lazy, it was a big performance and quite a risk. The first time a song has been performed that isn't out. And although it has big views on YouTube, Lily Allen pointed out on Twitter it wasn't getting AirPlay here.

Secondly, you might "think" it would have done well without her performance. However that's wrong. It's release was brought forward 5 weeks BECAUSE Fleurs cover was number 1 on iTunes.

Come on, it was clearly going to smash with or without her performance, anyone can see that unsure.gif just look at the pre-orders and the hype for it!

Thats true, its premiere on UK radio was on the 12/11 i think as Zane Lowe had it as his Hottest Record and it was C listed on the radio 1 playlist last week. The video was getting rotation too moving into the video chart top 40 this week from the top 100. So there was SOME airplay but the XF brought it into the mainstream in a way peoplewouldnt have heard it much until the start of January!

Wow, Band Aid must be selling loads of physicals - they're out of the top 15 on iTunes! And they'll only sell more as the week goes on, with Christmas shopping on Saturday. It'll be an interesting battle between Band Aid and Mark.

Martin, can you by any chance tell me if Leona is in the top 100?

Posted by: Rush 9th December 2014, 02:19 PM

I assume Uptown Funk should be safe for #1 with that iTunes lead, but I'm pretty surprised how well Band Aid are doing. Big Google Play impact for The Pogues I guess? I hope BO$$ holds well, probably no chance at keeping top 10 but still.

Posted by: gooddelta 9th December 2014, 02:19 PM

Take That looking for a safe third week in the top five with These Days biggrin.gif Interesting to see The Pogues in the top 10! Wizzard top 40 *.*

Band Aid will be overtaken by Mark Ronson I guess, it's hard to tell how quickly it will fade though. That said, it's not exactly a spectacular figure considering Asda alone ordered 250,000 copies...oops. Roll on bargain bin January.

Posted by: slowdown73 9th December 2014, 02:19 PM

Pogues top 10 ohmy.gif cheer.gif This would be the first time it's top 10 since 2007 I think, amazing. Mariah must be not too far behind as well.

Not entirely surprising to see Band Aid at number 1, it was always gonna jump back into the top 3 at least - 24k isn't spectacular and Mark Ronson will likely overtake, but unless they're really frontloaded (which it in theory shouldn't be, what with Christmas coming up), could be quite an interesting battle.

I thought that with the Mariah fall - she was top 5 on spotify at the weekend and still top 20 now with the coming weekend to boost her, she should end up at least top 20 by Sunday.

The albums look interesting is it possible the whole top 5 could challenge for 100k sales or will that more likely be on xmas week itself? they will all be close anyhow with heavy saturday sales in December. Band Aid probabaly would have ended up top 25 this week without the CD version by the looks of its sales so far. It sold 24k last week so going by downloads only it would be around 15k say this week so would have been on 5k in the mids so 20k cd sales app??

Wouldn't call it lazy, it was a big performance and quite a risk. The first time a song has been performed that isn't out. And although it has big views on YouTube, Lily Allen pointed out on Twitter it wasn't getting AirPlay here.

Secondly, you might "think" it would have done well without her performance. However that's wrong. It's release was brought forward 5 weeks BECAUSE Fleurs cover was number 1 on iTunes.

Fleur only sold that much because the song wasn't out.

And if those cover artists who release fake versions of big songs had the chance to perform on X-Factor, they'd also get to #1 on iTunes laugh.gif

Please! Fleur gave such an energetic and exciting performance. I can listen to the original but I'd actually rather watch Fleur's on YouTube. I don't think those terrible cover artists would get that reaction AT ALL.

Some of those fake covers have got into the Top 10 on iTunes.

A performance on X-Factor in front of 7m viewers would most certainly push them to #1.

Fleur fulfilled a demand while the original wasn't available.

The singles update isn't very reliable today (as often with the Tuesday updates) with some Spotify data missing, but with the lead they have it's safe to assume Band Aid 30 would be #1 anyway. I think Mark Ronson will probably beat them by the end of the week but pleased to see they should be safely back in the top 5 at least, hopefully at least #2! I would love it to be #1 so it breaks the record for the lowest position between weeks at #1 in the same chart run magic.gif It could potentially end up with a chart run like 1-2-12-1-3-12-x. V peculiar.

The Pogues in the top 10 is very *.*, I won't trust that until tomorrow though. Mariah could still be ahead of them with the missing data added. Wow at Olly Murs' album re-overtaking 1D's, the recovery begins now funky.gif Does he have that TV special this week? Uptown Funk is #28 on streaming Spotify thinking.gif

It'll most likely climb and it's #1 on iTunes so still unlikely Oliver will get #1.

Will be #1 on sales or will Taylor get there first?

I predict about #13 for Funk tomorrow, #8 for Thurs and #4 for Fri (presuming we get those)

Obviously it's #1 on Sunday (unless Banned Aid sales are too much)

I hope "Uptown Funk" get the #1, but I think Band Aid 30 will just about manage to hold it off, as I'm sure physicals will sell really well on Saturday.

Uptown Funk is 3 on spotify when you combine the versions of other songs in the spotify chart

Posted by: MrIndependent 9th December 2014, 08:37 PM

The sales in the album chart between 3-6 are all really, really close -- if it hasn't been posted George Ezra's album is at 6 on sales of 17k+. The positions in this range could be interchangeable (and more than likely will be) as the week goes on. I'm thinking Take That will end up at 6 -- One Direction, Olly and George all have high profile promo this week. #oops

Posted by: Doctor Blind 9th December 2014, 08:52 PM

Band Aid selling 19,944 CD singles - as expected then, impressive but hardly going to get them back to #1.

I suspect they may hang on to #2 but more likely they will slip to 3 behind Ed Sheeran. Ronson and Mars quite clearly going to smash the #1 with well over 100K.

Yes because the producing the song is such a small and insignificant role.

Well in that case any producer can credit their name as an artist if they produce the song, which I don't think is right.

"Artist" doesn't literally translate as "singer", it doesn't have to be the vocalist who's the artist and that's never been what is "right". You may not be a fan of it but at the end of the day, it's not exactly unjustified. Any producer could credit their name if they wanted to, indeed, some just choose to and some choose not to. Either way, it doesn't bother me really.

But if you look at it like this, Calvin Harris is credited as having a number of #1 singles, I don't know how many, but there are songwriters who have written a lot more #1 singles, and yet they wouldn't be credited as having #1 singles as they are not the performer. That's the point I was making.

Well I can't recall any instances where someone's been credited just for songwriting so I'd say that's a different case really to producing it. Equally, producing is different to singing and I do get your point really, I just wouldn't say it's not "right" (all my opinion of course!)

The bolded bit is the difference between them and the likes of Calvin Harris, David Guetta and Mark Ronson. Those three ARE the performers. They release their own singles to promote their own albums and they perform those songs live as part of their own promotion. The guest vocalists record the vocals for the production, whereas people like Max Martin for example produce the music for the vocals of other artists. There is more to being a musician than being a singer and producers like Calvin, David and Mark (specifically the latter two who don't sing at all) have simply made a name for themselves in a different way, they're still just as much the lead performers as any singer is on their albums' material.

Oh right kink.gif I guess it's down to their prerogative really. And what Bray said in a much better way than me laugh.gif

Posted by: Umi 9th December 2014, 11:10 PM

At the end of the day what you are saying is that these producers have no right to release music of their own volition. You are saying the likes of Calvin Harris should create songs and then beg for their vocalist to release them. That is ludicrous. The difference between most producers and people like Avicii is most producers are *asked* to make a song for someone else to release and only do so when asked. People like Dr. Luke have no desire to create and release music unless they are asked to do so by another performer. People like Calvin and Guetta *do* have a desire to create their own music and release it, so what other option do they have besides releasing an album under their own name?

Of course the majority of songwriters and producers don't get credited on hits they helped produce, but that is entirely because the drive to release those songs did not come from them.

That's a very good argument. However, it is also true that there have been other producers (Giorgio Moroder, Phil Spector) whose style has been just as distinctive as Calvin Harris and David Guetta. It's just that Spector and Moroder worked at a time when DJ / producers did not perform live in the way that Harris and Guetta do. Of course, Moroder is planning a new album so maybe he will soon add to his modest list of credited hits.

Posted by: The Hit Parade 9th December 2014, 11:21 PM

But clearly Giorgio Moroder did have credited hits, and in the same era so did Cerrone so there's nothing entirely new under the sun. Indeed in the early days of recording jazz bands would almost always be named after a conductor or an instrumentalist, rather than the singer.

He did indeed but he wasn't credited on a string of Donna Summer's hits even though his production played a very significant part. I Feel Love owes just as much to Moroder's production as it does to Summer's vocals.

Really quite incredible to see 'Uptown Funk' doing so well despite such a late release (in terms of this week). I can see this being to 2015 what 'Happy' was to this year.

Good to see Olly back in top 5 albums as well, atta boy smile.gif Does anyone know how 'Up' with Demi is doing? I know it's #40 or so on iTunes atm. The digital EP for it is out on 5th January and the video premieres tomorrow.

funny that cause that's one of the songs I'm thinking it'll perform like chart wise. I can see it going top 20 from the X Factor performance + Olly's tv special then shoot up to top 3 in the new year. Could maybe scrape top 40 this week too but doubt it.

Mark Ronson should hopefully be top 5 today, maybe even top 3, with that big lead on LPBs, looking forward to the mids later, should be interesting. I just wish he waited another fortnight though at least to have a consecutive run at #1 without a break. I'm not really a fan of seeing acts returning to the #1 spot weeks later.

Rather liking it on first listen, not their best song though ('Dead Air' is a lot better, shame that did nothing).

Still have never been able to get into 'Lies' for some reason, easily their weakest single for me, possibly the worst song on their album...

Positions 3-5 are very close in the album chart, disappointed with Take That dropping to number 5, i cant see them selling much more than 65,000 this week mad.gif These days is holding up much better than i thought.

Band Aid physicals must be low and not selling anywhere near what they expected.

Might drop to 6 as I said yesterday, George Ezra is at 6 and sold more copies than Take That yesterday with the amount between them being extremely minimal.

Ed's album selling +20k yesterday, just lol.

Come on CHVRCHES. Please stay top 40! Also nice to see Fifth Harmony still top 10, was hoping they'd be slightly higher (#7/8 at least) but it's ok. They haven't needed to resort to dirty 19p tactics to get a smash. smile.gif

Wonderful to see Wizzard in the top 40 too! Hoping it can go top 20 next week, for Christmas chart week!

For the record, what was the last track to have been #1, drop out of the top ten and then re-enter the top three? I have a feeling it's probably a giftcard effect one if any, but I'd be interested to know what tracks have done it (and why).

(and I want direct re-entries to the top three, no points for Boney M or Frankie Goes To Hollywood)

The Black Eyed Peas' 'Meet Me Halfway' is the closest thing I can find, dropping as far as #10 before rebounding to the top 3 from the giftcard effect. John Legend's 'All Of Me' (from X Factor) and Kings Of Leon's 'Use Somebody' (from a BRITs performance) have done similar things but not quite matching the criteria - both only peaked at #2 and John Legend 'only' got to #4 from the XF boost.

Predictions for Sunday:

1 Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk (120k)
2 Band Aid 30 - Do They Know It's Christmas? (2014) (90k)
4 Ed Sheeran - Thinking Out Loud
3 Oliver Heldens feat. KStewart - Last All Night (Koala)
5 Taylor Swift - Blank Space

Take That are performing on this BBC music awards tomorrow so hoping that boosts them. Must say I am very disappointed that the album is struggling. Still, a number 1 single and number 1 album is great and these days is still selling very consistently.

Posted by: gooddelta 10th December 2014, 04:52 PM

Happy for Mark and Bruno, the former is long overdue a No.1 and the Band Aid song already feels completely irrelevant. I can't see another version ever coming out (at least not using the same song).

Posted by: gooddelta 10th December 2014, 04:53 PM

1-5 for the Take That album hugely sucks :/ It does look like These Days is a genuinely popular song as opposed to a fanbase buy though, which is something.

Would love it if it beats the record set by Manic Street Preachers (2-26) [ignoring the 2-40 drop by RATM and the 2-65 drop by Wizard of Oz as those obviously dropped that fast under different circumstances]

Mark Ronson amassed 30k in sales for yesterday ohmy.gif so his sales for Monday was probably 4.5k just for a short time it was out, if it carries on selling 25k plus for the reminder of the week, probably looking at 135k to 140k.

I think the iTunes pre-orders weren't added until after midnight on Monday, so I think it will be more like 20k a day, for the rest of the week.

adding 60-80k depending on whether it slows down or stays the same (if Fleur performs it again on Saturday).

I wouldn't say the album is struggling. Its just not doing as well as many people expected but it's still doing fairly well and will have sold over 200k this week. Olly Murs album last week fell 1-6 but he has bounced back up and Take That may do but they need to do more promotion - I believe these days didn't get much airplay on radio 1 neither which won't help.

Masses of promo and events, XFactor performance, UnionJ now #4 on Radio airplay chart (5500 spins in last 30 days)-- and the single and album sales continue to drop like a stone a few days after release.

Sony must pull their hair out with this band.

Amazing its stormed to no.1 in a very short space of time, very happy that it has its the best song thats come out in a long time, of the year I'd almost go as far to say.

Dread to think how much it would have sold in its first week if it had been held back for another month, it already had a healthy number of pre-orders plus the gift card effect would have added some extra sales. I think it would have easily done 200k+ if its original release date had been kept.

Shame it won't beat X Factor, but I really hope it does it would be great to see them finally get beaten good and proper by an actual popular track.

I expect a 1-2-2-1 type chart run depending on the popularity of the winner, if it is practically zero like for Sam Bailey then it might be 1-2-1-1-..

Yah... but surely people will buy Fleur East's winners track, if the track is more accessible than the dross of rock ballads e,g, Skyscraper sleep.gif

Posted by: mr_aly 11th December 2014, 01:55 PM

I think how 'Skyscraper' performed was more a testimony to Sam Bailey's actual popularity (or lack thereof) rather than the track itself.

Let's face it, all of the winner's singles are all interchangeable cheaply done karaoke ballad cover versions anyway. It makes no difference.

Posted by: pippa 11th December 2014, 02:08 PM

I liked Sam Baileys version of skyscrapper, thankfully her album has done half ok and is not the worst selling X Factor winners album. Previous winners such as Joe, Steve and Leon won with far bigger viewing figures and sold less and that is not taking into consideration the re-release.

I had thought, Sam Baileys album would be easily top 40 this week.

Great news on One More Sleep by Leona Lewis.

Ella Henderson is top 10 all week on itunes with yours, i wonder does it have any chance of an official top 10.

If it wasn't for the new streaming rule, she would be top 10. sleep.gif

It really depends on the chart run and how it holds up, unfortunately none of us have a crystal ball.

Yes quite, thanks for making this point TBoy.

Taylor Jago, I do not appreciate your demands and rude way of making them - your 'requests' will be answered if and when people with information choose to answer it. Putting it this way is not acceptable, so remember that when politely requesting smoothing that people do out of their own time.

At the current pace Ed should be on for ~128k if he sells 18.8k each day (as he did Wednesday). Last week he had 64.6k on Friday and ended up with ~106k so sold 41k+ on Friday/Saturday (~20.5k/day). He should be on ~90k or so for tomorrow and think he'll do 50k+ this Friday/Saturday. If he performs on X-factor final on saturday I wouldn't be surprised if he did 160k+ this week and then 220k+ next week. Love tracking huge album sales! biggrin.gif

No wonder all of Ella's other songs are flops. If she concentrated more on them instead of "Ghost", she'd have more than one big hit. Same thing happened last year happened with Naughty Boy. "Lifted" flopped because he kept promoting "La La La"

Understandable, it normally takes a few months out of the chart for a heavily-played song to become listenable again!

No wonder all of Ella's other songs are flops. If she concentrated more on them instead of "Ghost", she'd have more than one big hit. Same thing happened last year happened with Naughty Boy. "Lifted" flopped because he kept promoting "La La La"

And John Newman also ignored Cheating and Losing Sleep in favor of Love Me Again.
But Ella Henderson has actually been promoting Yours a bit (she has sung it on The X Factor, The Jonathan Ross Show, and obviously it got a boost from Hollyoaks). Not so much for Glow, though. But where is she performing Ghost, by the way?

I know, I had that problem with Ho Hey and How Long Will I Love You, which I couldn't stand during their latter life in the chart, but now find quite enjoyable. teresa.gif

BBC Music Awards. Clean Bandit & Jess Glynne performed "Rather Be" but they could have easily performed "Real Love" whereas George Ezra could have easily performed "Listen To The Man" instead of "Budapest"

Well, they're nominated for those songs, and those are the songs that got them awarded, so it makes sense.

I think it's highly likely. It's on 828k and the Christmas sales are the highest of the year, plus it's number 2 in the mids with more than 50k this week.

As for this week's chart, I can see Olly climbing back in the top 3 albums after his 'Night In' special, and I really believe Uptown Funk could be this year's Christmas Number One!

Does that not say it all about how radio hang on to older songs and refuse to let go of them to the point where it overshadows a newer release if people don't even know it exists?

37.6k for Band Aid 30?! Those are really, really poor physical sales. I imagine a fair few would have pre-ordered, then cancelled their pre-order once they actually heard it. It's not as good as the original or Band Aid 20.

We would have had a million selling album last year if the compilation chart was never invented and the top 5 albums of 2013 would have looked like this:

1. NOW 86
2. NOW 85
3. NOW 84
4. Midnight Memories
5. Our Version Of Events

The best selling album should be Number One regardless of what tracks are on it.

Posted by: ThePensmith 12th December 2014, 09:16 AM

What I think the success of Ed's album this year has proved is that even in a tough or poor selling market, if the album's good (which X is, it's one of my albums of the year certainly) and people like it, then it will do well regardless of if it hits a million sales or not.

I remember when The Guardian published that snotty article earlier in the year declaring the album as a dead in the water format because the previous year (2013) didn't carry a million selling album and that Coldplay's 'Ghost Stories' was yet to surpass 300k (in spite of the fact that Olly's last one, 'Right Place Right Time' did reach a million sales across it's original release at the end of 2012 and the re-release with tour DVD last Christmas. Then again, this is The Guardian we are talking about).

I'm beyond delighted they've been proved wrong in this instance. And Ed most importantly is a nice man, very talented, great songs and deserves all his success. And there are so few apart from maybe Olly or Pharrell that you can say that about.

'Flops' really? A #7 and a sales #10 which has spent its 2 release weeks in the iTunes top 10 and is still going strong. Silly comment.

On the BBC music awards, the point of the show was to celebrate the year and its big songs and artists so obviously it was going to be Ghost, Rather Be, Budapest... It will be the same on TOTP Xmas.
On Ella, I can't recall her last TV performance of Ghost before this... She has always promos her latest single. Yours has been on XF, Jon Ross and Sunday Brunch for instance.
So you are plain wrong.

Posted by: pippa 12th December 2014, 09:59 AM

Classing Ella's singles outside Ghost flops is such a silly statement. Glow selling 100,000 is not a flop and it benefited album sales for her as yours has done. Yours will easily outsell Glow and sell well over 100,000. Performing Ghost at an awards show to celebrate the years music was the right move as it was a huge hit and it probably will benefit her album sales in the most important weeks of the year in terms of sales.

I disagree, artists albums are a piece of art and therefore take longer to make and even sell. Compilation albums have the advantage of being a bunch of really popular hits which gives them an advantage sales wise so should be listed seperately and thankfully are.

Well that's quite obviously a different kettle of fish, particularly in the case of artists who may not have necessarily been big album sellers. Firstly because it's lot of singles that have been big hits for that artist (often with a couple of new ones too, so not in effect a 'compilation' in the same way a Now album is).

Secondly because it often ends up being the biggest selling album for that artist. I can't think of many people for instance, who had picked up a Take That album prior to the release of the Ultimate Collection album. Likewise Girls Aloud when they bought out 'The Sound of...' in 2006.

Bob Geldof must be annoyed that X Factor is stopping him going back to #1 tongue.gif Although I think Ed Sheeran will take the #2, so it won't matter.

Although we don't have sales, it's a safe bet to say that both Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith will respectively have passed 4 x Platinum (1.2m) and 3 x Platinum (0.9m) total sales at some point either yesterday or, at the latest, this morning.

My guess for sales this week is that Ed will sell about 130k to 150k with Sam on 90k to 100k.

Haha no obviously, but it's more of a flop than predicted, considering they also appeared on TV.

McBusted's album charting higher than Union J's in its second week is quite embarrassing for them.

Thanks for the position, Martin. biggrin.gif

I can't wait to see where it is on the sales chart on Sunday! This is so exciting! Will it beat McFly's "Baby's Coming Back/Transylvania" record for steepest fall from number one on the sales chart?

Is Blame in the top 40? (Please don't)

Calvin Harris? If so, it's (or was yesterday - no mids today!) at number 37.

I had a look on the iTunes chart:

Ed Sheeran was just over 90K on Friday's midweek, so should manage around 140K for the week.

Ed is going to be over 200k next week easily, if he sings Photograph on X factor he will be feeding perfectly into the X factor demographic. 150k this week me thinks.
