Take our U2 trivia quiz

By Jim Harrington and Roman Gokhman
Oakland Tribune

It's almost time for the U2 concert. Do you know where your tickets are?

Ducats for U2's show in Oakland first went on sale in the fall of 2009, with the concert scheduled for June 16 the following year. But two weeks before the band was scheduled to take the stage on the West Coast, Bono was partially paralyzed by a back injury that required emergency surgery. The summer tour was called off.

The band's huge circular stage -- known to fans as "The Claw" -- which had already been built in Salt Lake City, was torn down. Following Bono's recovery, U2 toured through Europe, Australia, South Africa and South America. By the time the tour ends next month in New Brunswick, Canada, U2 will have played 110 concerts in 30 countries. Which brings us back to Oakland, where the band is finally poised to make its first stop in the Bay Area since 2005.

The answers:

1. A. The other three belong to Sting, the Edge and Elton John, respectively.

2. B. The Edge was born in a London suburb to parents of Welsh decent.

3. C. Larry Mullen Jr. posted a note searching for bandmates at Mt. Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin. The original lineup included the Edge's brother, Dick Evans. Bono was the last addition.

4. D. Feedback came first, the Hype second, then finally the name U2 in 1978.

5. C. The original lyrics err in saying that King's shooting occurred "Early morning, April 4," when it actually happened that evening. Bono, however, is known to correct that error on stage.

6. C. Although, to be frank, that's something we'd love to hear.

7. A. Yuppies? In San Francisco?

8. A. The Dalton Brothers included Alton (Bono, in a cowboy hat), Luke (the Edge), Duke (Larry Mullen Jr.) and Betty (Adam Clayton in drag).

9. B. The techno-heavy "PopMart Mix" of M's crowning (sole?) achievement can be found on U2's "Last Night on Earth" single.

10. D. At No. 24, the Edge ranked below those guys, but above such greats as Angus Young, Trey Anastasio and Eddie Van Halen.

11. D. All of those artists trail U2, which came in at No. 22.

12. C. Shockingly, "Spider-Man" will have been previewed an estimated 180 times by opening night.

13. D. And those are just some of the headaches associated with "Spider-Man."

14. A. The Edge's theme song was used in seasons one and two of "The Batman."

15. D. We're still waiting "... .

16. A. Show designer Willie Williams came up with a design after trying to figure out how to build a concert "in the round" while not foregoing any bells and whistles that would come with a major rock spectacle.

17. D. The name was a reference to the opening line on the band's single "Get On Your Boots." The song begins: "The future needs a big kiss."

How'd you do?

15-17 correct: You're so smart you probably do know how to dismantle an atomic bomb.

12-14: Your memory's an unforgettable fire.

11-13: You still haven't found what you're looking for.

Under 5: You'd probably have a hard time spelling U2.
