31st March 2019
It's a 6th week (in total) on top for the Walker Brothers 1966 classic Four Seasons cover, the third time it has topped my chart as an oldie - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore is the jewel in the crown of the great back catalogue of Scott Walker and his magnificent voice, and quirky, dramatic, often-banned solo career outside the more widely-loved (in the UK) Walker Brothers career. An American who was bigger in Europe, and more influenced by Europe, his death this week was a loss to me, hence the entries lower down, including the naughty Jackie, later covered well by Marc Almond, in at 4, having topped my charts before, as has Make It Easy On Yourself. With the loss of Ranking Roger from The Beat, and oldies from cinema and elsewhere there is only one new entry this week, at 75! That'll be Marshmello and CHVRCHES then! Number 2 in 1974, The Hues Corporation disco classic is back after a key moment in the movie Fishermen's Friends, about the Cornish band of singing Fishermen (in the album chart again this week) - Rock The Boat, err well, it's about the sea, I suppose, in at 8, Jack Savoretti gets another top 20, Tame Impala & Olly Murs go top 40, Will Young has a big climb, and that's about it for the new stuff. Kate Bush pops in with a remix from her 4-track CD which I've bought, and the reason there's not much new stuff is I've been to Liverpool to see friends and to revisit the much-changed city centre since the days of my childhood, teens and 20's (my grandma lived there, and so did I back in 1966, the year The Walker Brothers topped the UK charts as it does this week). Beatles songs everywhere you go, quite rightly, in The Cavern, museums, bars, River Mersey seafront.... Just be thankful I didn;t re-chart them too! 1 NEW 1 1 THE SUN AIN’T GONNA SHINE ANYMORE The Walker Brothers 170000 2 2 2 3 SPARROW Emeli Sande 251000 3 1 1 4 CHRYSALIS Empire Of The Sun 370000 4 NEW 4 1 JACKIE Scott Walker 65000 5 3 1 6 YOUR EX Paloma Faith 409800 6 7 6 4 YOU BELONG TO ME Cat Pierce 208000 7 4 1 4 IT’S OVER Morrissey featuring LP 400000 8 NEW 8 1 ROCK THE BOAT The Hues Corporation 48000 9 5 3 7 BEST 54 (ALL GOOD NOW) Jungle 442100 10 6 6 4 KIND OF LOVE Rat City featuring Isak Heim 126100 11 10 10 7 TALK Khalid & Disclosure 215000 12 15 12 4 SUCKER Jonas Brothers 95250 13 11 2 7 365 Zedd & Katy Perry 484000 14 8 5 4 SON OF MAN GG/06 aka 10cc (Kevin Godley & Graham Gouldman) featuring Hotlegs 164000 15 24 15 4 WHAT MORE CAN I DO?
