He got there through being Wheelchair Jimmy basically

And come off it - Britney's WHOLE CAREER was based on looks

And how did they market it exactly?

Everything about it was based on style/ looks, so it IS one metric when talking aboot musicians, as we've seen them base whole careers around it

Drake's average voice, rap, looks, etc, do not compete with loads of others out there

Posted by: T Boy 17th February 2018, 08:52 PM

Lots of artists are good looking and use that fact to attempt to sell their music though. Doesn’t always work.

Besides, I’d wager the majority of people that bought BOMT didnt do so because they fancied Britney.

Not everyone is shallow minded.

The only reason he got where he is is due to past fame, as there are FAR better rappers/ singers out there

Wheelchair Jimmy = Drake

Drake = Wheelchair Jimmy

Speaking for myself, I find the lyrics in a lot of Drake songs very relatable. Songs like 'Passionfruit', 'With You' and 'Take Care' in particular.

Past fame? Most people don’t know who wheelchair Jimmy is.

He’s made music that connects with people. Just stop trying to rationalise the success of music you don’t like. I don’t care if you’re buddy or charmed of t seet, you do not have superior music taste to anyone else, and people listen to the music they like.

Posted by: Midge 17th February 2018, 09:04 PM

"God's Plan" is God-awful but Drake has had some great mainstream tracks in the past... "Hotline Bling", "One Dance", "Passionfruit", "Find Your Love", "Hold On, We're Going Home" etc. He's got a very distinct sound and has built a following. Hence why we're being put through one of the worst number 1s in ages now. But some obviously like it, just like Geri Halliwell fans liked "Bag It Up".

Bitch, stop coming for me

He got to where he is to even get to make it because of past fame!!

That's what let him break through over better rappers - what don't you get about that?

Wheelchair Jimmy was far more famous in the US anyway - which let him break through

'Rihanna, who do you want, this guy who is already famous, or this unknown rapper?' 'Hmm'

'Record producers, he is already famous, or you can have this unknown rapper' 'Hmmm'

Yeah but so what to all of that? Why shouldn’t he use any platform possible to get ahead? Any singer would, it’s not easy out there.

The fact is, people are enjoying Drake’s music. If he was truly as objectively awful as you are trying to force everyone to believe, he wouldn’t be so successful. You literally give the music loving public no credit. They can think for themselves and can choose what to listen to.

But then people also liked Westlife (but now laugh at them with the rest of us), sooo he isn't Westlife levels of awful tbh

but nobody will be laughing at Drake in ten years time - he's managed to have hits that span multiple genres over nearly a decade and he's widely known as a really nice guy so there's no denying his starpower and success, whether you like his music or not.

Speaking of Westlife, Amazing is my fave of theirs. Not a fan of most of their stuff but they had had a few decent boyband tracks like Fool Again & Swear It Again (as much as I want to hate the latter for keeping Right Here, Right Now off #1).

Posted by: Lomadz 18th February 2018, 08:31 PM

Really liked Amazing, Us against the world, Unbreakable and a few others. They had a lot of money backing them and the quality of songs proved that. Sadly they get knocked because of just how successful they were and people love to hate, especially boybands.

Posted by: ML Hammer95 18th February 2018, 08:32 PM

I remember loving 'Amazing' when it came out! To be fair, it still sounds alright now too.

Backstreet Boys and Blue are the more defining childhood boy bands for me... doesn't get more defining than 'I Want It That Way'. laugh.gif

Seriously?

All I ever thought during the whole sorry episode is they had a few years where Louis Walsh knew that they could release ANYTHING and it'd do well regardless, so in the cheapest way cut corners with the end result being the most ultimate cheap tat. I don't see any "quality" with the majority of their output whatsoever.

Posted by: Lomadz 18th February 2018, 09:49 PM

Oh definitely towards the end but the first few albums had a lot out into them and they had big tours. It got tiresome in the last few years and it felt like they were just releasing a cover followed by an album for easy money. First 3-4 years though was different imo and they had some decent pop songs written for them although obviously not everyone's taste. I had a best mate that was a massive fan and stuck up for them a lot so maybe image bit defensive.

The Drake abuse is odd, he does well and his streaming is crazy but once again. He's not everyone's taste. I find his singles good but albums terrible but once again it's opinions.

Issue I have is that. All for constructive criticism towards artists but the nastiness that gets written by some is pointless and not needed.

I can't stand Jessie J for example but just don't listen to her or think about her....pretty simple.

What I found interesting looking at the thread about difference in sales/official peaks is that not much more than a year ago, Drake's song with 21 Savage "Sneakin'" was a sales top 40 hit, but floundered on streaming and didn't even hit the top 75 officially. Gente De Zona have one top 100 hit in the UK - #75 hit Bailando with Enrique Iglesias back in 2014. They have no name power and I don't think they'd boost the song at all.

Gente De Zona have one top 100 hit in the UK - #75 hit Bailando with Enrique Iglesias back in 2014. They have no name power and I don't think they'd boost the song at all.

I love Kylie and really like the song but let's not set unrealistic expectations!

Random post...

I still think the Gente De Zona mix is the main push for a single top 40 here for Kylie for Stop Me From Falling. The video is made around this and she has gone to Cuba etc to film so I am sure they will push that next week. It should bring the song to life even more

Yes that's why she hasn't publically announced that they are on the remix, or that a remix exists and why she is only talking about the solo version....

I never said Gente De Zona are big in UK...... But the sound of the song is different and I said the video will bring the song to life even more.

Why would you do a video of the remix etc and not want to push it!? Did know one see the clips last week? There are people in other forums saying it doesn't sound very Latino etc...... That's because BMG etc have not released this version yet.....

Anyway let's see.... It is only my opinion....

For those doubting me that Kylie has shot video with Gente De Zona and an edgier Latino cut of Stop Me from Falling here is a clip on the link http://www.rmscanal.tv/noticias/kylie-minogue-se-pasa-al-reggaeton-gente-zona/

Isn’t there a Kylie forum for all this sort of stuff?

Posted by: Bjork 10th March 2018, 08:24 AM

whats the point of having a kylie forum if you post any random thought that crosses your mind in here, no one cares

Posted by: danG 10th March 2018, 09:06 AM

iTunes thread cleaned again, posts moved here. We do indeed have a Kylie Minogue forum too.

can anyone explain what's happen when you follow someone on spotify...because to me does not seem to have any difference, no notifications about new music or appearing on the dashboard etc.

Posted by: danG 10th March 2018, 09:53 AM

They used to give you notifications when they released new music but they scrapped that in favour of a personalised 'Release Radar' playlist that has a selection of songs by artists you follow (as well as some that you don't) which appears on the home page every Friday.

He's been a high profile rapper since 2009 and is still at the top of his game, so the chances of Drake leaving the music scene anytime soon are very very very small. tongue.gif

I agree, can’t stand people talking about artists they like. They should shut up about it because it bores me. It’s not like I can just skip over their posts or anything rolleyes.gif

Is there not artist forums for that? I have no interest in Kylie yet currently I know what her next single is, where she filmed it, who it features, every remix of every song and when she last had a shit.

It isn't chart related which this part of the forum is supposed to be about.

B*Witched's Champagne or Guinness EP has so many good tracks!!!

Knowing what her single is and other versions IS chart related :/ it's the same thing that gets discussed about with other artists too.

And most of us have no interest in you constantly moaning about Kylie being discussed in the chart forum when she's in the chart. Most of the Kylie posts are relevant to the chart forum, the select few that aren't will be moved to the off topic thread.

I guess everyone will start listening to you when you become a chart moderator. If Kylie is currently releasing new music then she is relevant to Chart Chat. You actually could just skip posts rather than attempt to bend everyone to your will. If Kylie discussion is pushing you away from the site then bye. I doubt many will miss you.
