BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Maroon 5 feat. Cardi B - Girls Like You

Posted by: Juan Carlos 🌴 9th May 2018, 03:49 AM

Third single from Red Pill Blues. The track will be available on May 14 June 1 in a new version featuring Cardi B.

Posted by: lewistgreen 9th May 2018, 05:23 AM

Fifth single no?
Don't Wanna Know, Cold, What Lovers Do, Wait and now Girls Like You

Posted by: Jay ☆ 9th May 2018, 08:11 AM

It seems that Don’t Wanna Know and Cold are technically counted as being stand alone singles now, even though they appear on the Deluxe version of the album.

Posted by: Midge 9th May 2018, 09:55 AM

Preferring this one to "Wait" on first listen. I think after this one they really need to move swiftly on to a new era and go back to a more credible sound.

Yass cardi

Posted by: Bjork 9th May 2018, 11:06 AM

don't think Maroon 5 can go back to be a credible band
a lot of people sees them as the silly band from the Voice guy, Adam is more famos for being the voice coach and a celeb than for being in M5 + they're not a band anymore, not sure ieven if they play instruments :/

Posted by: Dexton 9th May 2018, 11:17 AM

Yay for this, Cardi could be good news or bad news for me at this stage I still don’t know if I love or hate her laugh.gif

Red Pill Blues is criminally underrated though tbh, there’s lots of really great songs on there with a handful not being 100% their new sound either. I’m excited for this as Girls Like You was very much a highlight for me along with Help Me Out, Denim Jacket, and Bet My Heart wub.gif

Funny trivia: on the deluxe edition of the album, 8 out of 15 songs have three-word titles laugh.gif 7 out of 10 on the basic version too

They're definitely still a band and play instruments:

Ffs why does Cardi have to jump on EVERYTHING these days, piss off.

Posted by: Juan Carlos 🌴 9th May 2018, 03:14 PM

Welp! I thought "Don't Wanna Know" and "Cold" were relegated to standalone releases and they weren't in the album (including the deluxe version of course). This is me showing how much I know about Maroon 5. tongue.gif

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE 10th May 2018, 09:20 AM

I mean Cardi’s literally done one pop feature so idk what youre saying when you say “why does Cardi have to jump on everything”???

Posted by: danG 10th May 2018, 10:02 AM

well she is doing a Rita Ora feature as well as this in the space of a week.

Cardi is the new Quavo wink.gif

The release date has been pushed back to June 1. (http://pulsemusic.proboards.com/post/6567924/thread)

She's got a Rita Ora feature AND a Jennifer Lopez feature both out tomorrow, on top of Bruno Mars, Migos, G-Eazy, Ozuna and Juicy J in the past six months so I think it's safe to say that she's jumping on a fair few tracks ;o

Posted by: Bjork 10th May 2018, 04:18 PM

good call, would have been too confusing to have Girls like you and Girls
out the same day,too similar titles

I have found M5's choice of having a rapper on almost every recent major single of theirs interesting, but it has really helped produce some fantastic songs for them. I'm sure Cardi will kill it as usual!

Posted by: Sarahwill 22nd May 2018, 04:55 AM

I can’t wait to listen to this song. I really like Maroon 5. However, I agree that the tracks the band used to produce a few years back are better than the recent ones. For instance, She Will Be Loved is one of my favourite songs. I am still excited about the release though.

Posted by: T Boy 22nd May 2018, 05:39 PM

This isn’t a great song, and that’s before it’s been infected with Cardi B.

I'm really liking the video and the song!

Posted by: Cqmerqn 31st May 2018, 05:18 PM

This is MUCH better than I thought it would be ohmy.gif Can see it doing a Finesse

Camila, Ellen, J Lo and many more feature in the video!

Posted by: Dexton 2nd June 2018, 02:23 AM

This is such a bop, I passed it over a bit on the album but now it's a single I'm loving it so much better. Cardi sounds fab on here too

I'm loving the video too, great editing (apart from Camila's transition at the beginning tongue.gif)

Posted by: Jüpiter 2nd June 2018, 08:15 AM

Video is good but the song is reallly bad? Like, it doesn't go anywhere, even more so than a lot of M5's recent songs (Wait, Don't Wanna Know, Cold...)

Posted by: Cqmerqn 6th June 2018, 03:00 PM

This is apparently going to debut with up to 100k pure sales in the US which is absolutely incredible in the streaming era ohmy.gif

Posted by: Dexton 6th June 2018, 03:08 PM

But it debuted at #94 on the chart right? How does Billboard work .-.

Posted by: Cqmerqn 6th June 2018, 03:11 PM

It was released on Thursday so charted on those sales alone

It’ll technically be it’s second week, should rise 90 spaces to #4!

Posted by: Dexton 6th June 2018, 03:14 PM

Ooohhhh right yeah that makes sense laugh.gif

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 6th June 2018, 08:42 PM

I'm absolutely loving this, I swear Maroon 5 release bop after bop!

Posted by: Jonjo 7th June 2018, 09:00 PM

The first M5 song I've loved since a long time ago!

It actually reminds me of Usher's 'Love In The Club' a lil bit!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 9th June 2018, 05:13 PM

Out of the blue, Maroon 5 have released a video for their cover of Bob Marley's Three Little Birds.

It's good to see the other band members featured prominently for once!

Such a lazy dig to make. I may not like the direction M5 have gone in and I certainly don’t like this piss poor song but can you blame them for going after lazy hits? When they were making great tunes in their own style like Misery and Never Gonna Leave This Bed, they were shunned and labelled over. Adam having a penis made very little difference back then. They broke lucky with MLJ and have smartly capitalised on it ever since.

I don't think it's lazy to say women of a similar age, with similarly lengthy careers, would struggle to maintain a string of hits like Maroon 5. It's not like the women on The Voice haven't also been releasing chart-friendly music over the years and watching it do nothing.

This. And Beyoncé is only a few years younger and also slaying. These two are always conveniently forgotten when people want to project sexism on to everything.

Speaking of which, isn’t Justin Timberlake approaching 40 and flopping?

But that’s the point I’m trying to make, I don’t think people are that turned off by age and gender. Maroon 5 are clearly providing something people are still interested in. To say they’re only successful at their age because they’re men is really demeaning. Not only to them, but to the general public. To say Maroon 5 get success because they’re male and the industry is sexist suggests that people have no minds of their own and are brainwashed. When in reality, they just have a different opinion.

It's not JUST because of their gender - but it is less of an issue for men. My point was most women with similar careers, similar ages, wouldn't be able to throw out basic bops and be top 5 on Billboard in their second week. Even with a Cardi B feature. They would barely be played on radio. Justin got playlisted. Filthy wasn't exactly Can't Stop the Feeling though, was it? His material was the problem (and generally being a bit problematic), not his age. He could easily bounce back tomorrow with a Max Martin song or something like Girls Like You.

It's funny when people try and pretend ageism and sexism don't exist in the music industry. Pink and Beyoncé are an exception, we all know that. I would say a lot of people were actually surprised Pink managed to get a hit this era. Even her team were telling her to soften her expectations because of her age.

But Maroon 5 have already been through a point of not being playlisted. They came through it with luck. Have a look at all the bands that came out the same time as them, consisting of men, and they’re not getting hit after hit in this day and age. Maroon 5 went further basic to remain popular, it was a marketing ploy on their behalf. They worked on that the same way Pink and Beyoncé work on their craft to remain relevant.

No one’s pretending that ageism and sexism don’t exist in the industry (thanks for the passive aggressive condescending comment tho) but to lump that at Maroon 5’s door, denounce their efforts and claim they’re only still popular because of what’s between their legs is an absolute insult. As it also is to assume the public don’t have minds of their own. It belittles the success of the artists who may sound basic, but have actually worked to hone a sound to keep them popular.

I’ve grown up in a world where Madonna, Cher, Kylie and JLo have all had big hits past 40 and I anticipate that Pink and Beyoncé will continue to get AirPlay when that time comes for them. I’ve also seen these artists struggle with eras at much younger ages than that. It’s unlikely you’ll ever be eternally popular unless you work for that reason. Maroon 5 do that, and should not have their achievements diminished because of their gender.

100% agree with this

And with blacksquare's comment.

Point me to a band of women in their late 30s-early 40s or a band with a woman in it of that age still getting easy top 10 and top 5 singles hits please.

Point to me a successful group of women who still perform together in their late 30s/early 40s? I’d give you All Saints but you have to account for long breaks and changing music scene.

Might I just point out that Maroon 5 haven’t had a UK top 10 since Don’t Wanna Know and their album tanked? This song has been given a rent a rapper to save the era-if it’s working, then we’ll done. They’ve absolutely not just had it easy because they are men. It’s all well and good to discuss ageism and sexism but this situation doesn’t even lend itself to that debate.

Posted by: Jüpiter 12th June 2018, 08:29 PM

Different scene in the UK and US. US is much more ageist I would say too. Try seeing a woman over a certain age at all on TV there or a human at all that doesn't look like a supermodel unless their entire characteristic is being ugly or a funny fat person, or it being a joke that they can be not good looking and somehow also cool.

Obviously just like Beyonce - literally the biggest female artist in the country bar Adele - there are notable exceptions, but the trend leans HEAVILY in one direction.

I would argue that just because you like a band there's no point suggesting that biases towards people like them shouldn't be brought up. Many of the bands that I'm a fan of that are still successful - Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, etc. I have no illusions about the fact that they are male is incredibly helpful for them to remain successful. Because there's no social image negative about older men (excluding ofc extremes like Cosby etc.). Young men are cute and cool, and older men are respectable and cool, or cool because they refuse to become respectable. There's no such image for older women, whether that's in film, or tv, or music. Women's appeal is still tied to youth and beauty and not-aging. So of course it's harder, because that image is going against nature, we do age, it's human.

I kinda feel that your point also supports my point. Yes, where are the women still performing and trying to make it in their 30s and 40s? Does the huge lack of them perhaps suggest that the industry hasn't smiled on them and hasn't been willing to still pour big budgets into giving them hit singles?

Male bands are seen as a banker where female bands aren't. Nowadays, anyway. I don't think it's taboo to accept that instead of putting our heads in the sand and shrugging. It doesn't diminish their success but it is pretty important context for it. This video's also a pretty obvious case of spending money to make money, just saying.

Posted by: T Boy 12th June 2018, 08:39 PM

My argument was against Maroon 5s success coming easy because they’re men. Success has not come easy for them and their desperation for it has ultimately costed them their integrity and who they were as artists. The implication in that initial post was that they are where they are because of their gender and I’ve challenged that. I do t even like their latest material but I will call out flippant derogatory comments that undermine the efforts of artists.

Posted by: Bjork 13th June 2018, 05:42 AM

agree with T B, I think they're popular cos Adam's been on the Voice for ages and that keeps him in people's minds + he's releasing trendy easy songs, not cos he's a man, Alicia or Kelly or Gwen haven't benefitted from the Voice cos their latest material is less good and less chart-frienly + they're not the stars of the voice, adam is

Posted by: Jonjo 13th June 2018, 07:13 AM

Well that last sentence is a bit rubbish, coz from my understanding (and from what I saw) Kelly seemed to be the life and soul of the last season. However, it was just her first season. Wasn't it about S3 that M5 and Xtina released 'Moves Like Jagger'? Which is what really propelled M5 and Adam back into the top end of the charts?

Posted by: Dexton 13th June 2018, 07:17 AM

Why does the success of one artist over another always have to do with gender on here

They always manage a big hit every now and then but maroon 5 struggle with album sales although considering the low peak of the greatest hits it has sold nearly 200,000 and we'll outsold a few of their studio albums.

Posted by: Liаm 13th September 2018, 01:27 AM

I think this might be my worst song of the year for how utterly devoid of any personality or soul it is :/ It's so offensively bland and for me that's worse than just being outright bad.

The least interesting & distinguishable hit of 2018 by some margin.

tbh after reading who are all the possible candidates for #1 next week in the US, Girls like you is the least evil
the other candidates are In my feelings, but he's dropped too much in all fronts to be still #1
then theres the Machine Gun Kelly diss track, and then theres the silly Kanye West track
so I'd rather have M5 at #1, at least there's a song in there and it's not something idiotic aimed at kids age 7 like the other 3 candidates

Amazing if this can go #1! Really happy for them that they’ve managed to continue their success this long, Red Pill Blues wasn’t a spectacular album but there was a few highlights and that’s how I’ve seen most of their albums really. M5 have become more pop sounding over the years to help stay relevant chartwise (which they probably wouldn’t need to do considering how big they are anyway) but that’s not a bad thing tbh. Once upon a time they were a popular pop rock band but what similar bands from the early 00s are still making waves these days?

Posted by: Bjork 13th September 2018, 01:04 PM

Tea.

No one outside of their most diehard fans will see them as a band anymore. At this point, they're just Adam from the Voice and his faceless backup releasing whatever sound is big at the time. Clearly helps that recently they've relied on features.

Posted by: T Boy 13th September 2018, 07:09 PM

Maroon 5 were my favourite group when I was a teenager. Their first 3 albums were solid, catchy tunes and meaningful lyrics. Albums 4 and 5 were much more basic but full of enough bops to make it not matter. But this latest album is lazy and trash. I’m amazed that Girls Like You is doing so well as it’s easily the most forgettable song on an already turgid album. When the single was announced I actually had to check it was on the album as I couldn’t even recall the title. I don’t get why this has fared better than the superior What Lovers Do.

cos of the video maybe? well, in the US it's done better cos of airplay

Posted by: Rob S~ 14th September 2018, 08:22 AM

I didn't mind GLY for a while but I do get what people are saying with them latching onto any current artist/song genre to secure hits (and extending their longevity) can't remember the last Maroon 5 track outside of this Spotify stuff that I last liked... (probably their V album tho aside from Sugar which was really dull and irritating) it's a shame they've had to resort to being desperate and sell out in recent years sad.gif

It may be bland as hell but it's a goddamn bop and it obviously resonates with the GeePee

Posted by: T Boy 14th September 2018, 03:18 PM

But what’s the definition of a bop? Girls Like You seems way too drab to be described as such.

didn't realise they've done so well, they've made the top 10 with almost all singles since Moves like Jagger
thanks to airplay mostly

That’s not true. They’ve always done well across all formats.

Girls Like You spent weeks at #1 on iTunes, weeks at #1 on YouTube (the video is near 1b views already), #1 on airplay and did very well on streaming.

I classify it as a bop and so does the GP apparantly 💁‍♂️

Posted by: Jonjo 15th September 2018, 10:01 AM

I can bop along to it. Listen to it whilst literally (well sort of kink.gif) bopping laugh.gif The melody is easy to literally bop to haha.

I really enjoy this song. I get peoples criticisms towards it but I do think this would've been a hit regardless of the video. It's probably the easiest sound for a hit. It's catchy, incredibly radio friendly and so accessible (you don't need to be a fan of M5 to enjoy it etc..)

I just take it for what it is and I enjoy it so much laugh.gif

Posted by: Cqmerqn 15th September 2018, 10:06 AM

Posted by: T Boy 15th September 2018, 10:26 AM

Can't imagine raving and misbehaving to "Girls Like You" which is what 'bop' would mean to me but each to their own! tongue.gif

I don't mind the song, the level of its success surprises me though, there's not much to it, though at the same time I feel that's the appeal. That cheeky little guitar loop.

Posted by: SKepner 15th September 2018, 08:51 PM

Cardi’s bit is the only enjoyable bit for me. By M5 standards this isn’t up there for me.

You see I interpret a "bop" to be moving your head as you listen to it. You described a "banger" to me laugh.gif

Actually you’re right on both accounts. And since my trip to Australia, I now call something that is both a 'banger' and a 'bop' a 'bangaroo' tongue.gif

Posted by: Dexton 25th September 2018, 09:57 AM

I don’t really think anything this era has been amazing singlewise, not compared to previous eras anyway which were generally led by huge singles. Don’t Wanna Know was a decent comeback but it was 10/10 radio and Spotify fodder, but then Cold underperformed by comparison. What Lovers Do saved them before the album but it was again just total commercial fodder and a complete rip off of Sexual laugh.gif Girls Like You is probably my favourite single from this album but I’d still rank it below a good portion of their previous singles (Sunday Morning deserved more tbh) :’)

To be fair, it was a sample of Sexual and the artists got writing credits.

Yes and it beats their own record

GLY: 10-8-{7}-9-8-7-9-9-7-10-7-9 (12 weeks)
Sugar: {7}-9-9-11-10-9-7-7-9-9-9-10 (11 weeks)

I had a skim through the video and she is still there.

Hoping this new video has minimal effect because 'Girls Like You' needs to disappear. Such a bland, nothing-y song that is inexplicably inescapable, probably the worst chart hit of the year for me.

Posted by: Bjork 17th October 2018, 05:21 AM

guess they're doing this for the US, it's still at #1 and sure needs more YT views to keep it there
