1999/2009 tie
not so eager for this week's chart, as it'll basically just be older hits rising/returning, and the only likely new entry is pretty crap sooooo..
The top 40 will pretty much just be a teaser for what will be in the chart of the year today, but it'll be interesting to see which songs do re-enter with no mids and if there's any unexpected beneficiaries.
Wouldn't be too surprised to see Alesso miss the top 20, rather brave decision to release it this week.

Nico & Vinz getting a play!
shame about Flutes missing the top 40 but it doesn't exactly deserve to do well with THAT kind of release strategy. That'll teach 3Beat a lesson.
Will be a slightly interesting chart as no midweeks and songs will be climbing, could get a few interesting re-entries. Alesso for top 10 please
Never cared for this song, don't see the appeal hmph

Song info
"Do They Know It's Christmas?" is a song written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984 to raise money for relief of the 1983–85 famine in Ethiopia. The original version was produced by Midge Ure and released by Band Aid on 28 November 1984.
At a press conference on 10 November 2014, Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure announced that in 2014 a group of artists would again come together to re-record the song, this time under the banner of 'Band Aid 30' and in aid of the Ebola crisis. It was released on the following Monday, 17 November, just 11 days short of the 30th anniversary of the release of the original version of the track. - iTunes

Eeek at those <10k sales for T10 singles in 2004 - thankful for the download era/gift card effect!
Doubt I'll tune in for much of this week's chart as it's all just re-entries and what not, I'm just eager to see the sales and how many Christmas tracks held on.
Last port of call for the Christmas songs this year.
2 awful re-entries
Lol @ Band Aid. At least it scraped the final week of the year!
Band Aid 30.
I really hope this is the last time I ever hear this.
Ouch at Band Aid down to 40. It will be interesting to see if Bob will re-do it again for a 40th anniversary in 10 years time.

Oh shut UP, Geldof.
Presumably the remaining Band Aid physicals were all given away for free then because it doesn't look like anybody's paid for the CD this week (#40 is about where I would expect it based on download sales).
BTW The BT40 is recorded today as I saw on a paper online Marvin and his Saturdays Missus heading off for holiday, They are doing their Chart of the year.
Is this Jameela's final week in the chart show?
Sinead O'Connor: Why is comfiirst sey yer, wisr tocutch sey yer.
(what actually is her line?!)
LOL at Geldof saying it sold 280k downloads in the first 10 minutes btw...and then 35k in the reminaing 10,070 minutes in the week? Impressive.
I expected a bit more than 3 re-entries but I suppose a lot of this years biggest hits were still in the top 40 last week! Band Aid 30 hanging on by the skin of its teeth, won't be top 100 next week most likely.
Pretty sad that a song that debuted with over 300k won't even go platinum.
Really surprised at how low Band Aid 30 are... they actually held up fairly well on iTunes even after the gift card effect kicked in. I wouldn't be surprised if its sales have actually increased from last week anyway.

A re-entry from Mr Probz. Was not expecting that
Mr. Probz re-entering thought the gift card effect would help this, yay for gift card owners' taste!
Thank god Band aid 30 is one its way out and a nice lovely Re-entery
A track by a Dutch artist, remixed by a German DJ, whose music video was shot in Mexico starring a Belarussian girl and an English guy.
"Put me in your bag, I'm flexible!"

Yay Shaky
Was not expecting THIS to re-enter!
Yay for Shakin' Stevens! What a pleasant surprise
One of the top 3 Xmas songs
So the 3 re-entries are "Waves", "Merry Xmas Everyone" and "Rude"
OMG SHAKIN' STEVENS IS BACK *.*.* classic Christmas song
Wham and Wizzard should be here if this is in, I imagine streaming has really helped the post-Christmas chart positions this year.

Biography:
Michael Barratt, known by the stage name of "Shakin' Stevens" (born 4 March 1948), is a platinum-selling Welsh rock and roll singer and songwriter who was the UK's biggest-selling singles artist of the 1980s.[1] His recording and performing career began in the late 1960s, although it was not until 1980 that he saw commercial success in his native land. In the UK alone, Stevens has charted 33 Top 40 hit singles. - Wikipedia

Wow, wasn't expecting Shaky to make an appearance today!
This hasn't ever been prepped, so full post later!
Shakin' Stevens must have had a really big late surge before Thursday and then sold next to nothing on the next few days, can't think of any other reason why it would be this high.
Wonder if Wham & Wizzard are top 40 too and Chris Rea not far off?
Good to see Wizzard hanging on in!

3 Xmas songs from 4 tracks! Still very much in the festive mood
The public chose well, what a fantastic pair of Xmas songs! And the last time I'll hear them this year.
Oh my @ all these Christmas three days after Christmas, it doesn't seem right (Pogues should still be top 20 I imagine though )
Another Christmas song! Loving the festiveness of the chart, makes up for everything else being stale.
I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday Glad Wham is (presumably) higher though
Kinda loving Christmas songs post Christmas
Just turned on the Chart Show to catch the end of Shaky followed by Wizzard! What a chart!

Really surprised to see Band Aid as low as #40! The song was Top 40 on iTunes up until yesterday and of course the physical was being sold for 2p in Asda stores and online!
I find it incredibly Rude that this has re-entered. Way to spoil the great festive joy...
My family really hate this song! I'm fed up of it! Will it just go away please!
Somehow I understand the his girlfriend's father's point of view.
P.S. Can we please move on to the far superior "Don't Kill The Magic" now?
No top 40 returns for Rather Be, Happy and All Of Me after all.

Yay for the Mr. Probz & Shakin' Stevens re-entries~
Blonde holding on pretty well despite the gift card effect!
So happy Blonde stayed in! Had put in the bracket of "recent NEs being pushed out by the gift card effect"
Blonde falling really fast
'I Loved You' ~ such an amazing jam tho
thought Blonde would fall out the top 40 tbh, it's not one of my fave dance songs but nice to see it have a semi-decent run
The gift card effect tends to boost more recent hits than the older ones. I'm not too surprised at the likes of Rather Be missing out.

Biography
Timothy McKenzie (born 4 January 1989), better known by his stage name Labrinth, is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. Initially, he was tipped to work as a producer, but Simon Cowell signed him to his record label Syco Music as a solo act. In the process, Labrinth became Cowell's first non-talent show signing in six years.
Labrinth made his debut appearance on the UK Singles Chart in March 2010, when his collaboration with rapper Tinie Tempah, "Pass Out", reached number one. McKenzie has collaborated with Tinie Tempah on numerous occasions since. Labrinth's first solo single, "Let the Sun Shine" was released in September 2010, reaching number three in the same chart. His debut album Electronic Earth, was released on 31 March 2012, having been preceded by the singles "Earthquake" featuring Tinie Tempah and "Last Time", which peaked at number two and number four respectively. He achieved his first number-one single in November 2012 with "Beneath Your Beautiful", featuring Emeli Sandé. - Wikipedia

Labrinth is a terrible, terrible singer!
No big deal this is tanking, this vocal version really grates me for some reason.
Get a better vocal edit for your next animal Oliver!
I don't approve of this Koala fall Last week in the top 40 for it I guess, such a shame as it's in my top 40 songs of the year
Last All Night (Koala) is falling WAAAAAAY too fast. My favourite dance song of the year!
NOOO another dance song falling way too fast If I could time travel I would sort the streaming problem out or get rid of streaming sales...
At least we get another week in for 'Blame'.
What a shame, the track is too good for a chart run like that.

Biography
Favoring a naughty schoolboy look that makes him seem even younger than his already tender years (22 when his first major-label album was released), Scottish artist, producer, and remixer Calvin Harris has a similarly youthful and forward-looking approach to his music. Skipping the usual apprenticeship in the clubs or on indie labels, Harris went from posting his own D.I.Y. electroclash music online through MySpace and similar sites, to signing with the multinational giant EMI almost in a single step. A short time later, he was producing material for Kylie Minogue, Dizzee Rascal, and Rihanna.
Born on January 17, 1984, in the southern Scotland city of Dumfries, Harris was first attracted to electronic music in his teens and was recording bedroom demos by 1999. Two of these songs, "Da Bongos" and "Brighter Days," were released as a 12" club single and CD-EP by the Prima Facie label in early 2002 under the artist name Stouffer. With that single to his credit, the still teenaged Harris moved from Scotland to London, but as a very small fish in one of the world's largest and most competitive ponds, Harris floundered; only one of his songs was released during his time in London, "Let Me Know" with vocalist Ayah on the Unabombers' 2004 live-mix CD Electric Soul, Vol. 2.
Returning home to Dumfries, Harris began posting homemade solo recordings to his MySpace page. An A&R representative from EMI liked what he heard and signed Harris to the label in 2006. Following a pair of successful singles, Harris released his debut album, I Created Disco, in the summer of 2007. It featured two Top Ten hits ("Acceptable in the 80s" and "The Girls"), and climbed high in the album charts. Along with his work as a solo artist, including touring in front of a full live band, Harris quickly became an in-demand remixer — working on singles by Jamiroquai, Groove Armada, All Saints, and CSS. He also wrote and produced songs for Kylie Minogue's 2007 comeback album, and collaborated with Dizzee Rascal on "Dance wiv Me," which reached number one in the U.K.
"I'm Not Alone," the first single from his second album, also hit number one upon release in April 2009, as did the album when it appeared that August. That album, Ready for the Weekend, topped the U.K. album chart and peaked at number 12 on Billboard's U.S. dance/electronic chart. Through 2011, Harris took on production work for Example, Tinchy Stryder, and Rihanna ("We Found Love," a quadruple-platinum hit in the U.S.), while he also issued two more of his own singles (the Kelis collaboration "Bounce" and "Feel So Close"). Harris' third solo album, 18 Months, was a collaboration-filled affair that featured "We Found Love" and "Bounce" plus vocal spots from Ellie Goulding, Florence Welch, and Ne-Yo, among others. It was released in October of 2012. - iTunes

Well conjuring up the full chart run for 'Merry Christmas Everyone' took quite a while Just about got it done in time for the first recap post though! Nice to see that song back (first time since 2008 it's been top 40, no doubt with much thanks to streaming!) as odd as it is to hear it for the first time after Christmas
The gift card effect has seemed a little more muted than usual with only 2 older songs re-entering but I still expect sales will be pretty huge. Could just be few re-entries because all the benefiting songs were still in the top 40 anyway
I was fully expecting this to be Ghost playing, so you can imagine my disappointment at hearing this...

'Yours' has now matched the top 40 longevity of 'Glow' (kinda puts that in context really deserved so much more, easily my favourite of her 3 singles although I really like all of them).

Bet Ghost makes the New Year Fireworks soundtrack. Works really well.
I hate when an old single's popularity prevents the subsequent singles from decent runs like it is happening to Ella Henderson.
I don't think people should rule out the likes of "Happy", "All of Me" and "Rather Be" from re-entering just yet. With only Phillip George looking to enter the T40 next week and Band Aid 30, Shakin' Stevens, Wizzard, Wham, Mariah Carey and The Pogues all looking to fall out, we should get another round of re-entries!
Boo at the likes of Blonde, Oliver Heldens, Labrinth and Ella Henderson all falling - all deserve to sell a lot more!
Pretty sure it has to be Gorgon City who's dropped out. Suppose that's what happens when you release on Xmas week...

6 months for 'Chandelier' in the top 40!
So thoroughly deserved.
This is actually never going to leave!
To think I thought this would only get about 8 weeks in the top 40 when it debuted at #6.
Gorgon City had dropped to well outside the top 40 on iTunes by the end of the week so yes, it's pretty likely they'll be gone.
Such a shame Chandelier didn't get more time top 10 but 6 months in the chart definitely makes up for it.
So glad "Chandelier" is still top 40, amazing chart run! I thought it wouldn't even last a whole month in the top 40.
Still loving 'Last All Night (Koala)' ~ shame about the drop
'Blame'
Wham climbing! Great song!
Wham has climbed significantly! Maybe Mariah & The Pogues will too? Should see some monster streaming figures...
Hurray for Shakin' Stevens making it in the end caught the tail end of it though also next to Wizzard too my two favourites

Gorgon City won't be re-entering anytime I think.
Can't say this climb wasn't expected, at least it didn't re-enter top 20.
Ed sheeran and his first EVER number 1, how I will miss Jameela
this reminds me Don't will probably be back in the top 20 it'll be a long while before we have an Ed-free chart show.
And so begins the first of EIGHT tracks by the three dominating male solo artists of the moment (Sam Smith x 3, Ed Sheeran x 3, George Ezra x 2). You could even add Olly Murs to this list and it'll make TEN, but his 'domination' hasn't been for as long.
I wish every Nick Grimshaw show would feature minimum Nick Grimshaw!

Dangerous this low already was hoping it'd hold up better than Lovers on the Sun but it doesn't seem to be doing that.
I thought with this being 59p on iTunes, it could climb. Let's hope DG moves onto the next single from 'Listen' in January.
I forgot this song was in the chart this week as well Nice surprise though
thought Dangerous might've climbed a little! easily the best Guetta track in a long time still

Biography
Although the first solo single from soul-inspired, London-born artist Sam Smith was issued in early 2013, it was his soaring vocal contribution to Disclosure's October 2012 U.K. garage track "Latch" which brought him to most people's attention. For most of his teens, Smith balanced study with music, soaking in the raw and passionate approach to performance exemplified by his favorite artists at that time such as Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan. "Latch" hit the upper reaches of the U.K. singles chart when Smith was 21, and many were surprised when his debut solo track took a more tempered path. The production on February 2013's "Lay Me Down" — also courtesy of the ordinarily dancefloor-focused duo Disclosure — recalled the stripped-back material that had proved successful for Adele in the preceding years. Next, Shahid Khan — aka Naughty Boy — decided to follow his Emeli Sandé-fronted U.K. Top Ten hit "Wonder" with the infectious, Bollywood sample-driven "La La La." Featuring Smith's powerful lead vocal, it became an instant May 2013 U.K. number one single following his spring tour in support of Sandé. - iTunes

Dangerous has grown on me LOTS recently, really like it now
Perhaps Guetta shouldn't have held back this single for ages and then promoted a different single the week this came out?
Or perhaps he should have released a single that was actually good.
Stay With Me ahead of I'm Not the Only One will that song ever go???
Joey Essex is going into music? lawd, I hope he doesn't chart with anything
Am I the only one completely bored of the Christmas songs and the fact the same one re-enter every single year? The are just awful. The only Christmas song I have ever liked is Wham but its been so over played I can't listen to it now.

and now Budapest being ahead of Blame It On Me BIOM is better people!!!!!!!
I agree the Guetta song hasn't flopped but it hasn't had massive longevity either. And it's not bad it's just a bit ho-hum. Doesn't help that the intro is so much more interesting than the rest of the song.

Hozier. This should climb next week as it's back on the Radio 1 playlist. Unless it's an error on the Radio 1 website and they've playlisted the next single.
Can pigeonhole this painful track with the likes of the mainstays as well.
Take Me To Church just leave us already! His voice isn't even that good, makes a dull song worse
Take Me To Church This has really hit me this past week, really loving its longevity.
Hozier has held up better than expected this week~ maybe it has a chance of finally going top ten in 2015 with renewed R1 support?!
This seems to be a bit marmite from the reactions this week. I think its a gorgeous track personally.

Biography
Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1970) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, actress, and philanthropist. Under the guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, Carey released her self-titled debut studio album Mariah Carey in 1990; it went multi-platinum and spawned four consecutive number one singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Following her marriage to Mottola in 1993 and success with hit records Emotions (1991), Music Box (1993), and Merry Christmas (1994), Carey was established as Columbia's highest-selling act. Daydream (1995) made music history when its second single "One Sweet Day", a duet with Boyz II Men, spent a record sixteen weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100, and remains the longest-running number-one song in U.S. chart history. During the recording of the album, Carey began to deviate from her R&B and pop beginnings and slowly traversed into hip hop. This musical change became evident with the release of Butterfly (1997), at which time Carey had separated from Mottola.
Carey left Columbia in 2000, and signed a $100 million recording contract with Virgin Records. Before the release of her first feature film Glitter (2001), she suffered a physical and emotional breakdown and was hospitalized for severe exhaustion. Following the film's poor reception, she was bought out of her recording contract for $50 million, which led to a decline in her career. She signed a multi-million dollar contract deal with Island Records in 2002, and after an unsuccessful period, returned to the top of music charts with The Emancipation of Mimi (2005). Its second single "We Belong Together" became her most successful single of the 2000s, and was later named "Song of the Decade" by Billboard. Carey once again ventured into film with a well-received supporting role in Precious (2009); she was awarded the "Breakthrough Performance Award" at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and Black Reel and NAACP Image Award nominations.
In a career spanning over two decades, Carey has sold more than 200 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. In 1998, she was honored as the world's best-selling recording artist of the 1990s at the World Music Awards. Carey was also named the best-selling female artist of the millennium in 2000. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, she is the third best-selling female artist in the United States, with 63.5 million certified albums. With the release of "Touch My Body" (2008), Carey gained her eighteenth number one single in the United States, more than any other solo artist. In 2012, Carey was ranked second on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Women in Music". Aside from her commercial accomplishments, Carey has won five Grammy Awards, 17 World Music Awards, 11 American Music Awards, and 31 Billboard Music Awards. Referred to as the "songbird supreme" by the Guinness World Records, she is famed for her five-octave vocal range, power, melismatic style and signature use of the whistle register. - Wikipedia

Biography
Best known for her Tony-nominated performance in the Broadway smash Rent, singer/actress Idina Menzel made her solo debut in 1998 with the pop-soul effort Still I Can't Be Still. She joined the cast for Wicked in 2003 and appeared on the recording that same year, while 2004 saw her releasing the album Here. The following year, Menzel appeared on the soundtrack to the television show Desperate Housewives, and a duet with Ray Charles (which the pair had recorded back in 1998) found its way onto the tribute album Genius & Friends. In 2007, a dance version of Wicked's "Defying Gravity" became Menzel's first club hit. A year later she landed on the major label Warner Bros. and released a new album, I Stand. - iTunes

Non-moving top 5 - hooray, as I obviously had no mids to base any prep off. I suspect there will be no new entries in the top 40 (possibly even the top 100) so that'll be it for the albums this week.
Worst Ed song on the countdown playing now.
Let it go sounded amazing as usual
Listening in the car today so can't really comment much
Ed's sold 211k in the albums according to the OC.
+ - only 1 bad song
x - only 1 good song
'Don't'
Who are people predicting to dominate the albums chart in 2015 then? The four males (Ed, Sam, George and Olly) should all still sell well into January/February. Unsure how well James Bay is going to be received to tell the truth, though what he's released so far has all been rather pleasant. I'm hopeful that Tom Odell's second album can be promo'd/led with something strong to ensure that sells well, it's seems almost unjust that his former support act (George Ezra) is getting all this success.

Biography
The Pogues are an Irish band from London, formed in 1982 and fronted by Shane MacGowan. The band reached international prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. MacGowan left the band in 1991 due to drinking problems but the band continued first with Joe Strummer and then with Spider Stacy on vocals before breaking up in 1996. The band reformed in late 2001, and has been playing regularly ever since, most notably on the US East Coast around St Patrick's Day and across the UK and Ireland every December. The group has yet to record any new music and, according to Spider Stacy on Pogues.com, has no inclination to do so.
Their politically tinged music was informed by MacGowan and Stacy's punk backgrounds, yet used traditional Irish instruments such as the tin whistle, cittern, mandolin and accordion.
The Pogues were founded in Kings Cross, a district of Central London, in 1982 as Pogue Mahone—pogue mahone being the anglicisation of the Irish póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse". - Wikipedia

Biography
Rather than the usual bombast or snooze-inducing "relaxation music," the U.K. six-piece known as Clean Bandit mash classical music and pop forms for an airy and dreamy yet driven sound that's like the chamber music version of house music. The core four-piece of the group were known as the Chatto Quartet, a classically trained string quartet that performed J.S. Bach and cited Jacqueline du Pré as an influence, but their post-show, wind-down music often consisted of garage, two-step, Craig David, and Arcade Fire tracks. The quartet members were aware of both producer Jon Wandeck and MC Ssegamic through the duo's work in photography, and when Wandeck suggested they play on one of his house music cuts, Clean Bandit were born. With MC Ssegamic on the mike, they released the classical-meets-house-meets-hip-hop-meets-heartbreak song "Telephone Banking" in the summer of 2011. Their Dance Armstrong mixtape followed in 2012, while 2013 saw the release of their Mozart's House EP. - iTunes

'Real Love' still sounds immense~
If Sam, Ed and George are so horrible who should be reigning then? Cheryl lol?
I'm quite impressed at the 6 christmas songs in the chart this week - the most in a few years?
The first non-mover this week
Still lovin' Clean Bandit
It's good but definitely the weakest of their charting singles so far. Not that that's a bad thing as that's quite the high standard!
Loving Real Love so much more now. Their 2nd best behind Rather Be weirdly enough lol.
Fully expecting this to climb in the coming weeks, and if not then certainly next week - Clean Bandit are appearing on TOTP and Jools Holland for NYE specials; though the former might well be a performance of "Rather Be" and the latter a double performance with both. A fantastic pairing in any case, though I'm preferring "Real Love" atm, mainly because I've been listening to "Rather Be" since it debuted in 2013!

Biography
Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter. Raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, Swift moved to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of fourteen to pursue a career in country music. She signed with the independent label Big Machine Records and became the youngest songwriter ever hired by the Sony/ATV Music publishing house. The release of Swift's eponymous debut album in 2006 established her as a country music star. "Our Song", her third single, made her the youngest person to single-handedly write and perform a number one song on the country chart. She received a Best New Artist nomination at the 2008 Grammy Awards.
Swift's second album, Fearless, was released in 2008. Buoyed by the pop crossover success of the singles "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me", Fearless became the best-selling album of 2009 and was supported by an extensive concert tour. The record won four Grammy Awards, with Swift becoming the youngest ever Album of the Year winner. Swift's third album, 2010's Speak Now, sold over one million copies in its first week of US release and was supported by the Speak Now World Tour. The album's third single, "Mean", won two Grammy Awards. Swift's fourth album, Red, was released in 2012. Its opening US sales of 1.2 million were the highest recorded in a decade, with Swift becoming the only female artist to have two million-plus opening weeks. The singles "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and "I Knew You Were Trouble" were worldwide hits. The Red Tour is visiting worldwide venues in 2013 and 2014.
Swift is known for her narrative songs about her experiences as a teenager and young adult. As a songwriter, she has been honored by the Nashville Songwriters Association and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Swift's other achievements include seven Grammy Awards, twelve Billboard Music Awards, eleven American Music Awards, eleven Country Music Association Awards and six Academy of Country Music Awards. She has sold over 26 million albums and 75 million digital single downloads worldwide. Forbes estimates that she is worth over $220 million. In addition to her music career, Swift has appeared as an actress in the ensemble comedy Valentine's Day (2010) and the animated film The Lorax (2012). As a philanthropist, Swift supports arts education, children's literacy, natural disaster relief, LGBT anti-discrimination efforts, and charities for sick children. - Wikipedia

Shake it off
An amazing climb for one of the best songs this year
massive climb for Swifty
not too surprising with it being gift card week but still very impressive
Incredible climb for a song without streaming! Would have been a nailed on top 10.
I may be purchasing my first Taylor Swift album. Shake it Off and Especially Blan Space are excellent.
Impressive jump for 'Shake It Off', but the lack of streaming killed any potential top ten return~

Biography
Following the success of JLS and the Wanted, X Factor contestants One Direction were the next group of heartthrobs to help revive the boy-band concept. The quintet outdid all of their predecessors, becoming the biggest boy band since Take That, selling millions of albums and singles, filling arenas and making movies, while hitting number one many times over across the world with undeniably hooky songs and plenty of boy next door charm.
The group was formed by Niall Horan from Mullingar, Ireland; Zayn Malik from Bradford; Harry Styles from Cheshire; Louis Tomlinson from Doncaster, and Liam Payne from Wolverhampton (the latter had previously reached the judge's house stages of The X Factor as a 14-year-old back in 2008). Each originally entered 2010's seventh series of X Factor as individuals, but following a suggestion from guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, they were grouped together to become One Direction. Mentored by Simon Cowell, they soon became one of the favorites to win the show, thanks to renditions of Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You," Elton John's "Something About the Way You Look Tonight," and Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart." However, despite receiving a standing ovation for their duet with Robbie Williams ("She's the One") in the live final, they eventually finished third behind Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle.
Spotting the potential of five Justin Bieber-esque teen pinups, Cowell signed them to his Syco label in a two-million dollar deal, and after performing on the X Factor tour, the quintet began work on their debut album with Savan Kotecha (Britney Spears, Enrique Iglesias). Following a sponsorship deal with Nintendo DS and a book, Forever Young, named after their cover of the Alphaville classic that was intended to be their winner's song, they released their first single, "What Makes You Beautiful," in late 2011. The full-length album Up All Night followed soon after. In 2012, One Direction became the first British band to debut on top of the Billboard 200 list when Up All Night sold over 176,000 copies during its first week of release in America.
In late 2012, One Direction released their sophomore album, Take Me Home. Highlighting more of the band's melodic pop, Take Me Home featured songs and production via Sweden's Carl Falk, Rami Yacoub, and Savan Kotecha, who worked on Up All Night, as well as contributions from singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran. The album proved to be another smash and topped charts around the world, earning multi-platinum certification in half a dozen countries. The singles "Live While We're Young" and "Little Things" also hit number one across the globe, and "Kiss You" reached the Top Ten in the U.S.
One Direction then embarked on a globe-spanning tour in which the band played over 100 shows, including six sold-out nights at London's massive O2 Arena. At the same time, they were being filmed by director Morgan Spurlock for This Is Us, a mix of documentary and concert footage that proved to be successful at the box office when it was released in August of 2013. While they were touring, One Direction also began work on their third album, Midnight Memories. Released just in time for the 2013 holidays, the record featured songwriting input from all the members, a new production team, and some new folk and '80s hair metal influences. It nearly outdid Take Me Home and Up All Night, peaking at number one in seven countries and spawning the singles "Best Song Ever" and "Story of My Life." - iTunes

Steal My Girl having fantastic longevity *.*
Considering the underwhelming start for this it's done really well!
I must admit Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and George Ezra tracks are going to be sticking around for a fair bit yet, with the BRITs coming up in Feb and probably Taylor Swift if she is nominated for an International Award.
It's a One Direction double play!

two 1D tracks in a row, yay
at least Night Changes doesn't look like spending as long near the top as Steal My Girl did
Double 1D, I'm in heaven *.* Night Changes still sounding absolutely gorgeous, easily one of their best for me.
Just returned from dinner.... have I missed a lot?
Olly double sleighing 1D (triple including the album) *.*
Whoops at this slipping out of the top 10 in the gift card week though, I was expecting it to benefit quite a bit. 'Steal My Girl' only going up 1 is a bit underwhelming too. Hm ~
Woo for the big climb for 'Shake It Off' though. Still really enjoying that.
Night Changes sounds like a Gwen Stefani song to me.

- iTunes

Really like Night Changes, in fact there haven't been many 1d singles I've really disliked. Probably Its Gotta be you is the worst.
Can any one say "Filler"?
My favourite solo Sam Smith song. This one can hang around!
Jameela, the iPlayer window is a month now,
Really expected this to go top 10 (and I wouldn't have been complaining for once if it did).
Great track.
The beat in the music duing the chorus reminds me of Next to me a bit is that just to me?

Biography
Jessica Ellen Cornish (born 27 March 1988), better known by her stage name Jessie J, is an English singer and songwriter. Born and brought up in London, England, she studied at the BRIT School before signing with Gut Records and striking a songwriting deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing where she wrote for artists including Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus.
After signing with Universal Republic, Jessie J came to prominence following the release of her debut single, "Do It Like a Dude", which peaked at number two on the UK Singles Charts. In 2011, after topping the charts in nineteen countries including the United Kingdom, France, Ireland and New Zealand, with the song "Price Tag", she released her début album, Who You Are, which charted at number two in the UK. Other releases from the album included "Nobody's Perfect", "Who's Laughing Now" and "Who You Are", which all charted within the top 20 in the UK. Release of the fifth single, "Domino", resulted in further international chart success, peaking at number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and becoming her second UK number one. The seventh single released from Who You Are, "LaserLight", became the album's sixth top ten single, making her the first British female artist to have six top ten singles from a studio album. Her second album, Alive, was released on 23 September 2013 and reached the top 5 in the UK Albums Chart. Aside from her musical career, Jessie J served as coach and mentor on television show, The Voice UK.
Citing various influences, Jessie J is recognised for an unconventional musical and performance style that mixes soul vocals with contemporary R&B, pop, electropop, and hip-hop beats. Jessie J has garnered various awards and nominations for contributions to the music industry, including the 2011 Critics' Choice BRIT Award and the BBC's Sound of 2011. As of April 2012, Jessie J had sold over 11 million singles and 2.5 million albums, worldwide. - Wikipedia

I wish this would Bang Bang out of the chart!
I'm pleased 'Heroes' is top 10, generic but I like it a lot.
I hope more importantly it can help push the release of her album here, it's frustrating we still don't have it.
a big climb for Jessie J! Makes up for the poor handling of the rest of the era I guess

Yes jessie j. Great to see it almost regain a top 10 position
I'm pleased Alesso is Top 10.
Jesus J almost top 10 *.*
YASSS for Heroes (we could be) also being top 10! I was always quite certain it'd be top 10 anyway though.
Jessie J urgh.
Completely forgot this was still to come, chuffed to see it boosted as high as #11 - would be great for it to hit 600k in the next month or so. Shame that it seems to be overshadowing everything the other three are releasing though... "Love Me Harder" in particular deserves to be a huge selling T10 record!

Biography
With a "cheeky chappy" persona to match Robbie Williams and vocals reminiscent of original Pop Idol Will Young, former call-center worker Olly Murs was one of the success stories of the 2009 season of The X Factor, finishing runner-up to Joe McElderry in the hotly contested final. Born in Essex in 1984, Murs showed little interest in singing while at school, focusing his attention on football, where he played for the school team and later semi-professionally for local non-league team Witham Town. In 2007, he appeared on Deal or No Deal, where he won a lowly £10, but it was his performance of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" on the sixth series of The X Factor that enabled him to show off his talents. Mentored by Simon Cowell in the live stages, he wowed judges with renditions of songs by the Beatles, Queen, and George Michael and soon became the favorite to win the show. However, despite a duet with musical hero Robbie Williams in the final, Murs finished a respectable second. In 2010, he signed a six-figure record deal with Epic/Syco Music and embarked on the sold-out X Factor arena tour. After being personally invited by Williams to play at the televised charity football event Soccer Aid, Murs released his first single, the Jason Mraz-inspired "Please Don't Let Me Go," in August. His debut album, featuring songs written by Eg White, Scouting for Girls' Roy Stride, and Wayne Hector, was released in 2010. The record produced three U.K. Top 20 singles, with "Thinking of Me" and "Heart on My Sleeve" racking up chart positions alongside the debut number one "Please Don't Let Me Go."
Murs took a short break from his musical career in late 2011 to present the eighth season of The Xtra Factor — a spinoff behind-the-scenes look at The X Factor — returning to the program that shot him to fame. His experience with the dynamics involved in the show and his upbeat character made him a firm favorite with the audience — as well as flirty co-presenter Caroline Flack. During the recording of each show, Murs was working on songs for his second album with writers Steve Robson (Lily Allen, James Morrison) and Claude Kelly (Kelly Clarkson, Backstreet Boys). The first single from his second record, "Heart Skips a Beat," featuring U.K. hip-hop duo Rizzle Kicks, was released in summer 2011 and swiftly became a hit. The full release, In Case You Didn't Know, followed in November and secured his first U.K. number one album. The following year, Murs opened for sprightly boy band One Direction on their North American tour and re-released the "Heart Skips a Beat" single, replacing Rizzle Kicks with Philadelphia rap duo Chiddy Bang, to coincide with the shows. Also in 2012, Murs released his third studio album, Right Place Right Time, which included the single "Troublemaker," featuring rapper Flo Rida. ~ Jon O'Brien & Scott Kerr, Rovi / iTunes

Wrapped Up back in the top 10!
Such an infectious song
Travie really sounds like Pitbull on this
Got the impression there was very little 'hype' building up to Olly's fourth album, but I'm so glad that since "Wrapped Up" was released it seems to have just exploded - this is such a great pop number and "Up" is just incredible!

Biography
Take That are a British pop group that formed in 1990 currently consisting of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, and Mark Owen. The original line-up also featured Jason Orange and Robbie Williams. Barlow acts as the group's lead singer and primary songwriter. Owen and Williams would provide backing vocals, with Donald and Orange serving primarily as dancers. In total, the group have had 27 top 40 singles and 16 top 5 singles in the United Kingdom alone, 11 of which have reached number 1, as well as having seven number 1 albums. Internationally the band have had 54 number one hits and 35 number-one albums. Robbie Williams left the band in 1995 while the four remaining members completed their world tour and released a final single before splitting up in 1996.
After filming a 2005 documentary about the group and releasing a new greatest hits album, a four-piece Take That without Williams officially announced a 2006 reunion tour around the UK, entitled The Ultimate Tour. On 9 May 2006, it was announced that the group were set to record new material together once again; their fourth studio album, Beautiful World, was released in 2006 and was followed up with The Circus, in 2008. The group achieved new success as a four-piece, scoring a string of chart hits across the UK and Europe while taking the number of records sold to 45 million worldwide. Williams rejoined Take That in 2010 for the band's sixth studio album, Progress. It was released on 15 November of that year and became the fastest selling album of the 21st century and the second fastest selling album in British history, whilst also making it the first album of new material to feature Take That's original line-up since their 1995 album, Nobody Else. Since 2011, Take That have set the new record for the fastest selling tour of all time in the UK with Progress Live, beating the previous record set by their Circus Live Tour in 2009, won the BRIT Award for Best British Group, and were named as Amazon's top-selling music artist of all time. In 2012, the band were announced by Forbes as the fifth highest-earning music stars in the world. In the same year, the Official Charts Company revealed the biggest selling singles artists in British music chart history with Take That currently placed at 15th overall, making them the most successful boy band in UK chart history. - Wikipedia

Alesso is at least in the Top 7.
Their totp performance has put me off this
I also really like Heroes so am pleased it's still to come.
I really like this!
5 weeks top 10 (probably 6 next week) has exceeded many an expectation. The Flood only managed 6 weeks!
Hooray for 'Wrapped Up' re-entering the top 10 - unfortunately missed almost all of it as the Internet cut off for a bit though

The tunes keep on coming. Once again the lower half of the top 10 is where all the best tracks reside
YAS @ Alesso/Tove still to come, was worried it'd miss top 10 so this is a relief

Biography
Alessandro Lindblad, more commonly known as Alesso, was a DJ and dance music producer from Stockholm, Sweden. His career quickly gained mainstream recognition for his remixes of Tiësto, Swedish House Mafia, and Avicii, as well as his own productions. His first major achievement was in 2011 when his remix of Nadia Ali's track "Pressure" was one of the most successful EDM tracks of the year. Later in the same year, he placed in DJ Mag's Top 100 list, debuting at number 70. Early 2012 started well for him also, when he was named one of MTV's "one to watch," making his first BBC Radio 1 essential mix, and earning the track of the year award on Zane Lowe's prime-time Radio 1 slot for the single "Calling (Lose My Mind)." He also managed to move up many places in DJ Mag's DJ of the Year listings to number 20. He leaped to major success when he achieved a U.K. chart number one with his collaborative single "Under Control" alongside Calvin Harris and Hurts. - iTunes

Alesso at #6. I was hoping he could go Top 5, but #6 is pretty respectable. Hope it doesn't dive down next week now.
That's a pretty excellent result for 'Heroes', much higher than I was expecting.
Tove Lo's vocals are so good.
Big congrats to Heroes! (was top 10 ever really in doubt?!)
The only new entry of the day and by FAR the best song in the entire chart!
YASS at this very comfortably in the top 10 I thought it would be top 10 but around #7-9, so it's even outdone my expectations, fabulous.
HEROES MISSING THE TOP 5
what a floppagé~
This is just growing and growing. Love Tove Lo on this.
"All About That Bass" is the only song I mute on the radio at the moment - I see the appeal but it's just really not for me.
This being held back has certainly done wonders for its peak, I'm dreading its chart run though - but hopeful it (and the likes of Blonde and Oliver Heldens) can all stabilise.
Very respectable result for Alesso in the post-Chrimbo madness~
I was expecting Heroes to underperform but the Gift Card effect wasn't anywhere near as big as I thought so not too surprised to see it top 10.
Anyway, this is...dull, these SHM member songs are starting to become completely indistinguishable.
Alesso track is much much better than philip George

This is a pretty mediocre follow-up IMO. Could be a grower but not feeling anything from it as of yet.
Happy enough for Tove to get another hit but 'Heroes (we could be)' is extremely formulaic and dull. Hope it doesn't hang around too long.
Up sounds like Counting Stars (or at least some OneRepublic song)
Really like this - easily his 3rd best song after Heart Skips A Beat and Dear Darlin'.
Sounds more like Try by Pink to me!

- Wikipedia

I was expecting "Heroes" to be related to the David Bowie track for some reason.
Anyway, it sounds sort of OK on first listen. "Up" isn't bad either.
Cheers to all the Starbucks lovers, merry Xmas!
Undoubtedly her best for me, but I only liked very few songs by her prior to this era anyway.
Aly:
Back at its peak yay. Still needs to go top 3 though, I guess it's just not happening.

3 songs I really like in the Top 5. That hasn't happened for a while (Ben/Taylor/UF)
I still quite like Thinking Out Loud; but I'll probably be sick of it by the time it leaves the chart in June.

WD Mark Preventing a second week at #1 that is something no one needs.
First EVER UK #1!!!
Thinking Out Loud is a brilliant song, those who don't hear it have only something against Sheeran in general. He's not my favourite artist either but with songs like this he deserves all the success he can get.
Most needlessly drawn out number 1 announcement of the year? She still nearly cocked it up
Actually quite like this Haenow track at the moment. I'd tentatively put it in my top 3 winners singles from X Factor.
sales thread up
Hope Ben had good sales behind UF and can stay Top 5 next week as well.
Happy New Year everyone
Good to see 'Uptown Funk' back at the top after being unjustly displaced by the latest useless X Factor karaoke~
I sense a Sam Bailey like drop to around 6/7 for this next week. Should still manage more weeks top 40 (not that that's anything to write home about)
That is the worst top 3 I have seen in a long time. Have a word with yourselves British Public.
Mark Ronson back on top where he should be Likely to stay there for a few more weeks too, deserves all of them anyway
"Something I Need" holding up despite streaming/gift card effect benefitting the likes of Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift. Hopeful that the lack of new releases can ensure it gets more than 3 weeks T10 (as Sam Bailey did), but I'm sure it will.
On the topic of #1, I'm only working up until the end of January here, but "Uptown Funk" could be looking to extend 1-2-1 to 1-2-1-1-1-1-2-1 (with Meghan Trainor being the only real competitor and that's not until January 19th!) There aren't many tracks around that look like they will 'climb' to #1 - I'd say "Up" with the inevitable radio/video play, but that's it. "Blank Space" would be a contender if it had streaming to help it.
as it's the last chart of the year it seems like the perfect time to thank everyone who puts effort into making this thread work Amazingly run every week!
Mark Ronson's FIRST EVER UK #1

Radio 1's chartbreaker: Phillip George - Wish You Were Mine.
'Wish You Were Mine' ~ what an amazing chart breaker
Best chartbreaker of the year in the final chart show of the year.
Here's to a great 2015 to everyone!
Happy new year to everyone!
Sorry I couldn't make it today
It's funny how "Stay With Me" is higher on sales
