BuzzJack Music Forum _ Indie, Rock and Alternative _ 20 Years of Placebo

Posted by: Mattias Sep 10 2016, 11:00 AM

Placebo are celebrating 20 years since their first album came out and with that, on October 7th are releasing a compilation album of 36 tracks, featuring all their singles (although, funnily enough, 'Twenty Years' won't be on it, as well as a couple of others) and some live recordings etc. An EP called 'Life's What You Make It' will be coming out on the same day, featuring new single 'Jesus' Son', as well as some other new songs (including the title track, a cover of a Talk Talk song) and some live recordings.

When first listening to this new single, I was underwhelmed but I was actually really endeared by it by the end and now I can't stop listening to it wub.gif

They've really had such a great 20 years musically. Such warmth in their fuzzy sound <3

Omg enjoy ohmy.gif Didn't know you liked them too. They're also coming to Ireland, I would love to go if I can. I just had a look and apparently the support act on one of the dates is Minor Victories, who were entered into the last edition of Nuggets and got high points from me!

Saw them about five times between 1996 and 1998 and I remember hearing Bruise Pristine on the Evening Session back in 1995. Unfortunately, like many bands of the time, they went way off the boil after their first album. Teenage Angst and Come Home are still excellent singles though.

I used to consider them my favourite band, but they sort of lost me a bit with the last two albums onwards (the last album was really really awful sad.gif )

They have such an amazing discography though and were an integral part of my growing up, they'll always hold a special place in my heart.

You don't rate their second album much, richie?

I sort of agree with Richie. Great debut, so-so second and third albums. Permenant disappointment thereafter.

I haven't bothered with them for a few years now but I used to love them.
So many gems in their discography!

I may have only heard the singles from it but, no, I'd gone off them a bit by the time Pure Morning came out. The energy had gone. But I still saw them at a couple of festivals around that time.

Their second album was my favourite at the time but I pretty much loved everything on all their first three albums, they went a bit off after that but still had the odd moment. Allergic was my favourite track on the second album and is probably my favourite of theirs full stop.

their debut had great songs but also some terrible ones, i.e. Bruise Pristine, how could they pick that one as single and follow up to Nancy Boy!!!!

Posted by: richie Sep 13 2016, 08:17 AM

It was actually their debut single in 1995 - so they must have thought it was good enough to release twice. I'd agree it's not up there with the other singles off the debut album though, but better than Pure Morning.

This thread has made me spend much of today revisiting the first few albums and I've really enjoyed them - I was surprised by how much I liked Sleeping With Ghosts as I didn't have good memories of that one at all.

Bruise Pristine every time for me.

Saw them live in 1997 and 2015 (18 years apart!)

'Bruise Pristine' is a masterpiece!

amazed you all like Bruise Pristine, a 0/10 for me biggrin.gif and their worst single ever biggrin.gif

So I'm starting to really like Jesus' Son, it's their best single in years for me.
