BuzzJack Music Forum _ Katy Perry _ Will 'Small Talk' rebound, or be another '365'

Posted by: 365 13th August 2019, 10:13 AM

Despite better openings on Spotify than '365' 'Small Talk' is off to a very slow start and is looking to be Katy's first single to miss the top 40 on its first week (I think?). But there's still the vertical video and official video still to come, can Katy pull it back, we've seen loads of songs tank in the first week and slowly climb back...But sometimes it really just doesn't work out...Are we banking on 'Harleys in Hawaii'? laugh.gif

(I still think it's a really cute bop by the way, I'm not 100% it was right for the GP...)

Let me know what you voted for!

Unfortunately I think it’s another 365. I like the song but just don’t think it’s anything special, especially when compared to NRO.

I think it's another '365' unfortunately.

I believe we need a better way of measuring success when it comes to singles and overall success for artists. Chart positions just isn't enough to give an indication on how well a song is known/liked.

I think it could do a Bon Appetit, at best. It's such a shame sad.gif.

Another 365. 365 was so much better too. Katy is having a time of it when she can't even get bops like NRO and 365 into the top 10. If they don't cut it, this won't.

Unfortunately looking like another '365'. Although I hope that I'm proved wrong.

another 365 - it's a bit of a miss + she's going to lose all momentum that never really over built.

Give it a week.

There’s no video yet and limited airplay. It will be a cute top 20 hit.

I’ll just wait for what happens when it impacts radio in the US, which isn’t until next week

No, I can see this being a #33 peaker.

I'm thinking it'll perform similarly to Ellie's 'Hate Me'.

It's not doing quite as bad as 365, (that was #104 on Spotify at this point, and this is on #68, and this doesn't even have a music video yet - that had a big one).

I can see it being another '365' for her which is actually gutting considering she built up such good momentum with 'Never Really Over' sad.gif

I think it'll be a cute hit, might scrape top 20 if it's lucky, and keep the Katy train ticking along reasonably well.

Posted by: SKOB 13th August 2019, 08:51 PM

Zedd was the first artist to be credited on 365 so that might had an impact of its streaming performance? Dunno.

I don't think this can go higher than it does this week.

Hmm, I'll reserve predicting until the video but I could see this doing a Bon Appetite at best, without the eventual fanbase love. Just not clicking for me. sad.gif hopefully if it does show no signs of catching on, they'll swiftly move on. It would be a huge shame if all of her momentum was lost.

I'm feeling like this could be the final single Radio 1 ever playlist of hers and the end of her as a commercially viable artist, if I'm honest. sad.gif

I can still see her getting hits as a featured artist though if that does end up being the case.

This.

Well not all popstars last, but I'm surprised Katy was one of the ones to fizzle out like this ohmy.gif

She needed better 3rd album single choices and shorter gaps between albums after it.

I suppose when you think about it, she's been in the business for over a decade and it's now 9 years since she was at her absolute peak. So many others don't last as long as that.

Posted by: tommie 15th August 2019, 08:41 PM

I think they'll continue to try and push it for a bit, so I could see it ending up like Bon Appetit.

Posted by: blacksquare 15th August 2019, 08:57 PM

I don't particularly like this but I really did hope she would manage to turn it around.

It's easy to forget just how many hits were on Teenage Dream alone!

I can't really picture Katy Perry after the smash singles and mainstream success — when radio and the charts aren't interested in the slightest. She already seems a little disillusioned with the entire concept of making albums, projects, as well as the industry itself right now. I hope she doesn't just accept defeat. Maybe this will be a great turning point for her as an artist.

Honestly I still can't get over the fact 'Never Really Over' wasn't a worldwide smash hit drama.gif

I have to agree.

I thought it was gonna be a long running top 5 hit.

A surprise for sure as it wasn’t such a strong song packed with a chorus what stood out. M

Amongst her very very best.

Went with the third choice. This won't do much. Not surprised as I considered this DOA when I found out it was produced by Charlie Puth.
