BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Buzzjack's Ultimate UK Number 3 Single - 1st Round

Posted by: King Rollo 2nd January 2021, 06:19 PM

In 2019, we picked Madonna's 'Like A Prayer' as our favourite number 1 single and last year, we chose 'Take On Me' by Aha as our favourite number 2. Now it's time for the singles that peaked at number 3. Will the winner be from the 1980s again? Once more, in the first round, you vote for your top 30 number 3 singles. Please put them in order from 30 points for your favourite down to 1 point for your least favourite. The format after that will be a bit different this time. I don't think the quality of songs on the list is enough to justify having 200 in the semi-finals and 100 in the final rate, so this time, the 100 singles with the most points will go through to two semi-finals of 50 songs each and the top 25 from each semi will go through to a final rate of 50 singles (this will also mean there will be less work for me to do). However, each voter's favourite number 3 will be given a wild card into the semi-finals even if it didn't receive enough points from other people to qualify so there could be more than 50 songs in each semi-final.

Here is a link to the list of number 3 singles. There are a few on there that are re-releases of songs that previously reached number 1 or number 2 so obviously those are ineligible. There are two weeks for you to vote so plenty of time to look through this list to make sure you didn't forget any songs that don't immediately spring to mind.

The last #3 was Breaking Me really?

Not too many since then but looking at the OCC records, the songs that peaked at number 3 since Breaking Me are:

13/08/2020 Nathan Dawe feat. KSI - Lighter
03/09/2020 BTS - Dynamite
29/10/2020 Tate McRae - You Broke Me First
05/11/2020 KSI feat. Craig David & Digital Farm Animals - Really Love
12/11/2020 Wes Nelson & Hardy Caprio - See Nobody
19/11/2020 Little Mix - Sweet Melody
24/12/2020 Taylor Swift - Willow
07/01/2021 Jess Glynne - This Christmas

Obviously Taylor and Little Mix could still hit new peaks (plus KSI though less likely).

I've spent this evening creating a Spotify playlist for all the songs that are on there if anybody wants to listen or follow it, the fantastic The Boys on Amazon kept me entertained while I was putting it together! Buzzjack won't let me post it as I have not yet done 20 posts so if anybody would like the link I can DM it.

The only missing songs are:

The BC-52s - Meet the Flintstones (1994)
Baby D - So Pure (1996)
Denise and Johnny - Especially for You (1998)
Romeo - Romeo Dunn (2002)
Bandaged - Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth (2008)
Jess Glyne - This Christmas (2020 - Amazon exclusive)

The following songs also only had karaoke versions available on Spotify:

Lynne Hamilton - On the Inside (1989)
Curiosity - Hang on in there Baby (1992)
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - Power Rangers (1994)
Goldbug - Whole Lotta Love (1996)
Fugees - Rumble in the Jungle (1997)
David Sneddon - Don't Let Go (2003)
Victoria Beckham - This Groove/Let Your Head Go (2004)

I've spent this evening creating a Spotify playlist for all the songs that are on there if anybody wants to listen or follow it, the fantastic The Boys on Amazon kept me entertained while I was putting it together! Buzzjack won't let me post it as I have not yet done 20 posts so if anybody would like the link I can DM it.

Thanks for doing that. If you send it to me, I will put it in the opening post.

When i see someone put a song next to 30....does that mean its in 30th position...or 30 points (and therefore in 1st place!?) unsure.gif

Posted by: King Rollo 5th January 2021, 06:08 PM

I'm taking 30 at the top of a list to mean 30 points. If a list has 1. at the top, as with Dandy's list, I'm taking it to mean 1st place.

Posted by: garyfeld 5th January 2021, 06:10 PM

others agree??

Yeah that makes sense. The favourite song is always at the top of the list regardless of the number beside it. laugh.gif (for me at least)

I was able to work out your favourite was at the bottom of your list from looking at your lists for each set of decades so there's no need to edit your vote. Life On Mars has been given 30 pts down to 1 pt for Paranoid Android.

Sailing was a no.1 single, Mark. It returned to the chart and got to no.3 after being used as the theme tune to a BBC documentary series about the Ark Royal.

I'll add one point to your scores for your bottom 11 songs.

37 people voted which is a great response. Last year, 29 people voted in the first round of the no.2 poll and the year before, 25 voted in the first round of the no.1 poll.

This evening, I will start a countdown of the singles that didn't make it through to the semi-finals.

Barry Biggs - Sideshow
Eiffel 65 - Move Your Body
Milli Vanilli - Girl You Know It's True
Paul McCartney and Wings - Band On The Run
Oasis - Songbird
The Rolling Stones - Miss You/Faraway Eyes

I think Band On The Run is my favourite Wings song. It was on my shortlist but didn't make my top 30. Also here, from 1978, we have Miss You, the final top 5 single for the Rolling Stones. Oasis have two songs this time and the first one bows out early on. Sideshow was Barry Biggs' only top 20 hit. I don't think I've heard it since the 1970s but I still remember how the chorus goes. That's the test of a good song.

Posted by: Jade 18th January 2021, 07:40 PM

Sorry I didn't submit in time, I tried cutting the list down the other day and it proved tougher than I was anticipating so I was going to come back to it, just didn't quite squeeze the right moment in to do so. But will vote in the next round and follow along with the results - 'Songbird' my favourite of that lot!

Lene Lovich - Lucky Number
Megan Thee Stallion - Savage
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Dear Prudence

This classic from the new wave era was Lene Lovich's only top 10 single. Dear Prudence is often cited as one of the best cover versions of a Beatles song. Savage is one of the songs from 2020 that made their way in.

Boyzone - Key To My Life
Dean Friedman - Lucky Stars
Sly Fox - Let's Go All The Way
Carly Rae Jepsen - I Really Like You

Lucky Stars from 1978 is a duet but Denise Marsa didn't get a credit. It was often the case at that time that a singer on a record would not be credited on the cover. We also have Boyzone's second single and a one hit wonder for Sly Fox.

Victoria Beckham - This Groove/Let Your Head Go
Destiny's Child - Emotion
The Grid - Swamp Thing
Delta Goodrem - Born To Try
Enrique Iglesias - Do You Know (The Ping Pong Song)
Alison Moyet - Is This Love?
The Script - Superheroes

I was trying to remember who was involved with The Grid. I knew it was someone from the 80s. On checking, I see it's David Ball from Soft Cell. This was one of six top 40 hits for the duo. Elsewhere, we also have Delta Goodrem's debut single and Alison Moyet's fourth solo top 10 hit.

Posted by: StoneDragon 19th January 2021, 10:22 AM

A few great songs out already - Carly Rae Jepsen - I Really Like You, Lene Lovich - Lucky Number and Siouxsie and the Banshees - Dear Prudence are (very different) classics but they just missed my votes.

Very surprised I'm the only person to vote for Born to try - I thought Delta was pretty loved on Buzzjack

An excellent use of the Elvis Costello sample by Rogue Traders while PM Dawn do the same with Spandau Ballet. There's also the disco classic from Van McCoy and a variety of acts from Slade and The Proclaimers to Sugababes and the two most well known Jacksons.

C & C Music Factory featuring Freedom Williams - Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)
Ricky Martin - She Bangs
David Sneddon - Don't Let Go
Wildchild - Renegade Master '98

A dance classic from the C & C Music Factory, the first of their two top 5 singles. I wasn't sure if I knew the Chris Andrews song from 1965 but having a listen, I do recognise it. Also here is Fame Academy winner David Sneddon with the follow-up to his number 1.

Atomic Kitten - It's OK
Bananarama - Robert De Niro's Waiting
Cliff Richard - Some People
Edwin Starr - War

Travis - Sing

Some People is the first from my own list to appear. In my opinion, it's Cliff's finest single. We also have two girl groups, two Scottish bands and Edwin Starr's landmark recording.

C&C Music Factory is probably my favourite of those that are out so far, don't think there have been any that votes from me would have saved though.

Only 1 of my nominations is already out. No surprise I was the only one who voted for a Morrissey song. There's hardly any hype for him on here.
Surprised 'Set Adrift On Memory Bliss' has already been eliminated. It wasn't close to my top 30 list but I really like it.

The Beach Boys - Barbara Ann
The Isley Brothers - This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)
McFly - Sorry's Not Good Enough/Friday Night
Queen - A Kind Of Magic
Taylor Swift - Willow
Unkle Kracker - Follow Me

A Kind Of Magic was written by Roger Taylor and was used as the ending theme of the Highlander film. Willow is the most recent number 3 to get a vote and is currently at number 13 on the chart. We also have two singles here from 1966.

The Proclaimers are the only of my nominations out so far. Although there are already a few songs I'd missed from going through the list of #3s so hadn't really considered, including that Isley Brothers one which probably wouldn't have made my final 30, but would have been close to it.

Irish Blood, English Heart wasn't far away from my nominations. However out of his solo songs, I'd only put Every Day Is Like Sunday up there with the 15 or so best songs by The Smiths.

Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart
Culture Club - Victims
The Damned - Eloise
Dua Lipa - IDGAF
Papa Roach - Last Resort
Donna Summer and Barbara Streisand - No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)
Peter Skellern - You're A Lady

The second song from my vote to go out, a beautiful song by Peter Skellern with great use of the brass band and choir. I think Victims by Culture Club is better than either of their number 1s and we have a great cover version of Eloise by The Damned. No More Tears really should have been a number 1 single.

Monday Monday
River Deep Mountain High
A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You
Zabadak
Walk Away Renee
Dock Of The Bay
This Guy's In LOve With You
This Old Heart Of Mine
Reflections Of My Life

and that's just the 60's and half the slots are already gone!

No I couldnt have narrowed it down to 30, it would have driven me insane at having to dump major classics! I would have had to just go to my All-Time Top 900 and see which ones peaked at 3, otherwise I wouldnt even get beyond 1980.... laugh.gif

Crazy Town - Butterfly
Fatboy Slim and Riva Starr featuring Beardyman - Eat Sleep Rave Repeat
Lauren Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing)
The Human League - Love Action (I Believe In Love)
The Nolans - I'm In The Mood For Dancing
Duck Sauce - Barbra Streisand
Sam Smith - I'm Not The Only One
Taylor Swift featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco - Me!
Sunset Strippers - Falling Stars

Love Action was the first of eight top 10 hits for the Human League. A day after appearing as an artist, Barbra Streisand is now a song. It's great to see the Nolan sisters here, this must be the only type of Buzzjack poll in which they have the same points total as Taylor Swift.

The Corrs - What Can I Do
Earth Wind And Fire - Let's Groove
Kasabian - Fire
The Rasmus - In The Shadows
The Small Faces - Itchycoo Park
Transvision Vamp - Baby I Don't Care

The Small Faces had the same number of top 10 hits as the Human League, that's if you count Itchycoo Park twice. It got to number 9 when re-issued in 1975. All six songs here are by groups.

29 of the 31 points for Music were from me. It's from a time when a six minute orchestral rock epic could actually reach the top 3. It's a shame to see it bow out, I suppose not many on here know it even though lyrically it's the perfect anthem for a music forum. Also here is a classic chillout tune from Jakatta.

Fuse ODG featuring Sean Paul - Dangerous Love
O-Zone - Dragostea Din Tei
Topic and A7S - Breaking Me

I don't know any of these three but I have to pick one of them for the youtube clip so I chose the oldest. Having listened to it, I don't think I would give it any points if was entered into the current Club Bizarre foreign language edition in the dance forum.

Posted by: Santa Bré 25th January 2021, 08:05 PM

How can you NOT KNOW 'Dragostea Din Tei'. Literally iconic.

Posted by: King Rollo 25th January 2021, 08:11 PM

Top Of The Pops was still going then so I would have heard it at the time and maybe on the radio as well but I don't remember it.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 25th January 2021, 08:12 PM

I thought Fatboy Slim would appear on 25 with only my points, so not surprised to see it appear tonight. I always thought it was complete rubbish when it was out and I heard it on the radio and then I saw him live at Glastonbury and he opened his set with it, realised I’d just never heard it in its best setting.

Hey King, are u doing 2 semifinals with 200 songs like last year? Im shocked the cut-off is higher than 32. It was 24 last year.

It's 100 songs in the semi-finals plus wild cards. I explained the format in the opening post.

Intrigued as to how many songs are left to drop out before the top 100 plus wildcards. Last year I think the cut-off was 24 points for the top 200, and here I've counted 73 songs from 25-36 points, but with a few more voters this year.

SMTMOBL is one of two BSB songs that I asbloutely adore, with the other still to come.

STBFL is like the perfect 90s ballad. I wish people still made songs like that.

I lost 5 of my 30 early on and haven't lost any more since but it's nerve wracking with each update, not knowing how many more are still to come before we hit the top 100!

Plenty recent departures I'd have been happy to see in the top 100, not least You Got The Love and All The Lovers.

With its iconic saxophone riff, Baker Street was a top 3 hit for Gerry Rafferty in 1978. From five years earlier, we have another well known song by Carly Simon. Her four top 10 hits were in 1972,1977,1982 and 1987 so the title of the last one, Coming Around Again, is quite appropriate. Three other female singers go out here.

THE CUT OFF POINT HAS BEEN REACHED

There are 102 songs left with the next four on 53 points. Rather than eliminate two of them on a tie-break, I am putting all four of them into the semi-finals. I also promised that every voter's favourite number 3 single is guaranteed a place in the semis so we also have some wild cards:

Wild Cards

30 points

Jax Jones featuring Raye - You Don't Know Me (danuary)
Britney Spears - Sometimes (No Sleeep)
Son Of Dork - Ticket Outta Loserville (Jason)
Britney Spears - Womanizer (Nick F1)
The Weeknd - The Hills (coi)

Angry Anderson - Suddenly (Mango 30 points)

So there will be 51 qualifiers plus three wild cards in each semi-final. The first one will start on Monday.

Losing Charly at the last gasp is a shame. 22 of my 30 have made the cut though, including most of the top 10. Will settle for that!

'Suddenly' has always been one of my all time favourite songs (they don't make power ballads like that anymore) and then we had it as our first dance when I got married so yeah I'm glad it's going through as a wildcard wub.gif even though I doubt anyone else is gonna give it any votes!

I'm surprised 'Erotica' finished so high for what I believe is generally regarded as a not very good Madonna song (I think it's brilliant though).

I'm sorry but I didn't like this new system of only 100 songs going through to the semifinals. I preferred a lot more last year's sytem with 200 going through.

Hopefully we will be allowed to vote for only 10 songs in each seminfinal round because I don't think I like more than 10 songs left in the top 100.

Posted by: King Rollo 31st January 2021, 05:53 PM
