6th december 2020

It's a first week on top for Disco album track Last Chance, really should have been the 3rd single, but Kylie as ever ignoring the obvious singles off her albums. That's her 14th for a 4th consecutive decade - no number one's in the 80's, one in the 90's, 5 in the 00's, 6 in the 10's and 2 so far this year. At 2 it's the 48-year-old gibberish-lyrics-but-fab track from Adriano Celentano, whil Jake Bugg gets his first-ever top 5.

There's a Xmas influx led by Freiheit's 1988 chart-topper (for me) which was recently covered by The Fizz. Keeping The Dream Alive is selling on itunes, and this is the first time it's re-charted, in at 38. Greg Lake's multiple chart-topper is also back, for the 8th time, having topped my chart for Xmas 1975 when it knocked Bohemian Rhapsody off the top before it got knocked off by Mamma Mia. Classic company. There's some new Xmas songs too, Keith Urban rounds off a fab year with his I'll Be Your Santa Tonight, in at 66, and Suzi Quatro is unexpectedly back with a soul Xmas ballad unlike anything she's done before - My Heart & My Soul in at 72 for her 4th of the 20th century and a run that started 47 years ago.

George Michael kicks out his other oldie to make space for a Xmas song - the twice-charted December Song, shame it's not better-known. Little Saint Nick is also back for The Beach Boys - incredibly it's never had another chart run since it first made my charts as an oldie in 1974! That was also the same Xmas I charted Darlene Love's Phil Spector Xmas song which also pops back 46 years since I first bought it as a vinyl single, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).

Mica Paris gets her first entry for a decade, having debuted back in 1988, Air return with a Moon Safari album track 22 years since Sexy Boy topped my charts, OMD bring Enola Gay back 40 years after peaking at 2, and The Jam bring a Town Like Alice back for a 3rd or 4th run since it went top 10 in 1982. Mental As Anything is huge on itunes this week, not sure why, but it gives the 1987 top 10 another bite of the cherry with Live It Up. Callum Beattie, and Meduza, both follow-up, Elton John's back again 47 years on from his first top 10 spot with it, and Chris Rea's classic perennial drives back in for the 15th time, starting in 1986, 1988, 1994, and every xmas since 2005, bar 2. So that's 5 consecutive decades, equalling the 70's classic from John & Yoko.
