Early History

The Vülkyrians are a Leto-Quilvor people related to the Nørk. It is believed that the first invaders came from Ethanola and that they've stayed only briefly. However, for centuries the tribes of Vülkyria had little contact with Western civilization. They traded with the Vikings in the country's only port at the time, they called it Vülk Køpunger, (Market of the Vülkyrians) which is now known as Vülköping, the capital. In the 11th and 12th centuries the Vülkyrians fought the Elëdani several times but they remained unconquered. Finally, in the 13th century the Danaelandan conquered Vülkyria.

Danaelandan monks had tried to convert the pagans of Vülkyria to EDM with little success. They then decided to use force to 'convert' them. In 1202 Klas Bergling, the bishop of Aelan, founded an order of crusading knights called the Jockeys of the Disc to subdue the pagans. In 1208 they invaded Vülkyria. Letimü, The Great Warrior led the Vülkyrians but he was killed in battle in 1217. The Danaelandan subsequently captured Southern Vülkyria.
Then Bergling made an agreement with the Trifoski, he would give them half of the Vülkyrian lands in exchange for the coastal part of their country. In 1219 the Trifoski successfully invaded Northern Vülkyria. There they built a fort, which the Vülkyrians called Ruaid Burg (red castle). By 1227 the whole of Vülkyria had been conquered.
In the 13th century Vülkyria was split in two. Danaelanda ruled the South while Trifoski ruled the North. Danaelandan people became the ruling class in Vülkyria.

In the 16th century both Ashton and Elëdan coveted Vülkyria. In 1558 the Elëdani invaded North Vülkyria. They had defeated the Trifoski and prepared to conquer the rest of the lands south. However the Ashtonise successfully captured Vülköping from Danaelandan rule in 1561 in order to forestall the Elëdani. A long and terrible war over Vülkyria then took place with the Ashtonise finally driving out the Elëdani by 1582. For a time Vülkyria prospered under Ashtonise rule, however in 1695-97 Vülkyria was struck by famine, which killed many of its people. In 1710 plague struck Vülköping and tens of thousands of its people died. At the beginning of the 18th century Ashton and Elëdan fought another war. With their numbers shortening rapidly, the Ashtonise retreaded and ceded Vülkyria to the Elëdani.

Modern History

During the 19th century nationalism was a growing force in Vülkyria. In late 19th century the Elëdani tried to enforce their language by forbidding the use of Vülkyr in public. This caused unrest in the country. Manor houses owned by Danaelandan were burned. There were also many demonstrations. The Elëdani army tried to restore order by executing and deporting many Vülkyrians.

Tired of the Elëdani, the Vülkyrian elite decided to restore their independence and prepared to depose the Queen of Elëdan of her duties over the country. As unrest grew, radicalists took over a more central role in this revolution. They were clamoring for the Let to rule over Vülkyria. The Let, one of the first people in the lands, were considered the true blood of the Vülkyrian territory. The elite contested this claim but to no avail, as by 1830 The Let Revolution saw the overthrow of the Queen of Elëdan with her army fleeing the country shortly after.
It marked the shift from one constitutional monarchy, the Elëdani Queendom, to another, the Lettish Monarchy, and the replacement of the principle of hereditary right by popular sovereignty.
The appointment of Vlad Wuitschik as the first King of the Lets was controversial. Wuitschik was known for being a direct descendant of Danaelandan and Elëdani, however, his claim of pure Let descendancy was taken very seriously by the Lettists thus becoming King Vlad I of Letland. Lita, a small town in the center of the country was made the capital of the new Kingdom of Letland while Sankt Jeroensen - the city known today as Stora Kvarnstad - served as the seat of government.

Many unfruitful attempts to overthrow the Lettish Monarchy took place, the most famous of them was Operation Vülkyria - a failed attempt to murder King Alexey II in 1944 which resulted in many of the general officers of the Lettish Army and key members of the Vülkyrian Resistance to be classed as traitors and sentenced to death for treason.
In an attempt to strengthen the international identity of the Kingdom and thus solidify the Lettish idealism nationally, Letland joins the Buzzjack Song Contest in its 26th edition in 1956, albeit to diminishing returns. Vlad Topalov, the Lettish representative in that edition, famously quit his music career after his last place in the contest. Conspiracy theorists still claim to this day he was imprisoned and tortured by King Alexey II for not honouring the name of the Kingdom abroad.

After thirteen years away from the contest, and following growing civil unrest and the substancial growth of Vülkyrian pride, King Sergey IV demands LTV to return to the contest following the same plan as his father. In 1987, Letland returns to the contest represented by girlband Tentações in what is considered by many purists a questionable choice.
Unbeknownst to the Lettish elite, their song 'Hey DJ', was a secret signal in the military coup by the Vülkyrian Resistance: the first airing of the song after the contest (at 10:55 pm) by LTV Radio alerted the rebel captains and soldiers to begin the coup and take over strategic points of power in the country, "announcing" that the revolution had started and nothing would stop it except "the possibility of the Monarchy's repression". The lyrics of the song, "Hey DJ, don't play that song for me" was a cryptic message against the rule of King Sergey IV.
Six hours later, the Lettish Monarchy relented. Despite repeated appeals from the Vülkyrian rebels on the radio warning the population to stay safe inside their homes, thousands of Vülkyrians took to the streets, mingling with the military insurgents and supporting them. Although there were no mass demonstrations by the general population prior to the coup, spontaneous civilian involvement turned the military coup into an event with unexpected popular participation.
King Sergey IV found refuge in the main Lita military police station. This building was surrounded by the Resistance, which pressured him to cede power to General Carlsson. The King and his family fled to Elëdan where they spent the rest of their lives.

The following day, newspaper Letland Gazeta announced: "To the Vülkyrian people - Constitution of the Provisional Government of the Republic — Today was proclaimed the Vülkyrian Republic in the grand hall of the Palaces of Gamlaborg Municipality, after the end of the Vülkyrian Revolution movement."
All traces of Elëdan influece were defaced or entirely removed with Vülköping being reinstated as the capital of the country and seat of government, Lita completely losing its city status and Sankt Jeroensen reverting to its original name of Stora Kvarnstad.
Vülkyria thus debuted in the Buzzjack Song Contest the following year with the military themed 'Drones' by underground group Night Drive.

Following years of rebuilding the Vülkyrian identity, the Ministry of Culture famously and controversially started working closely with the Elëdani Ministry of Culture. Many saw this as a way for Queen Jonna to regain control of the Vülkyrian people and territory.
This culminated in 1994 during the Elëdan-Vülkyria hosted Buzzjack Song Contest. With the use of the Vülkyrian capital for the Semi-Final stage of the contest and the selection of De Dødelige as the Vülkyrian representatives, complete unknowns in the country that had an established career in Elëdan, many saw little to no national identity in the presentation and protested in front of the newly built Buzzjack Arena and around the VLK headquarters. The protests quickly turned violent after Police clashed with demonstrators and all plans to host the Semi-Finals were abruptly cancelled after these protests grew into widespread national riots.
This caused tensions between the Vülkyrian and the Elëdani governments as the prior cited lack of support and no permission for their own input while the latter cited no responsibility for the Semi-Final stage and no jurisdiction over the civil unrest. The 64th contest was thus very delayed and remains to this day unbroadcasted by VLK, even though De Dødelige were still sent to the contest under the Vülkyrian flag, coming at a dysmal 50th place.
The Ministry of Culture ceased to collaborate with the Elëdani and VLK steered out of the contest for seven editions returning for the 72nd edition to mixed results.

Vülkyria achieved its best placing in the country this year with "You Got Me Baby" by Vülkyrian DJ and producer superstar Lushington, in what was his second showing at the contest.
To mark the occasion a new arena began to be built in the northernmost city of Ruaidburg in hopes to host the contest in the near future.
