BuzzJack Music Forum _ Madonna _ Nothing Really Matters ● 20 Years

Posted by: liamk97 Mar 8 2019, 02:58 PM

It's 20 years since the final single was released from Ray of Light, 'Nothing Really Matters'. The song was inspired by Madonna's daughter Lourdes; she reflected how motherhood had changed her perception of the world and what's important, concluding that sharing love is what matters most. It's lyrical content and the opening minute of the song gives the impression that 'Nothing Really Matters' is a ballad, however the chorus sees a more clubby sound introduced and William Orbit's signature electronic magic is cast over a heavy bassline.

The video saw Madonna take control of the choreography, stating that she didn't like how other people say she should move. Her jolty, disorganised movements add to the eerie mood of the video, which was influenced by the novel Memoirs of a Geisha. The video was recreated for the opening performance at the 41st Grammy Awards - a night that saw Madonna take home 4 trophies.

I adore this song. So many interesting production moments, from the distorted, slightly broken, electronic sound at the beginning and the deep bass that runs throughout. The middle 8 is the main highlight where it becomes more melodic and that gorgeous piano comes in.

I love the video too, definitely an underrated moment in her videography.

I always thought she seemed nervous during that performance and it really showed in the vocal.

The word gets banded around everywhere but for me, this is one of her most underrated songs. It is often overshadowed by the other huge moments on the Ray of Light album but for me, this puts up an almighty fight. Such a beautifully powerful and elegant song. And THE MUSIC VIDEO is easily one of my favourite ever from Madonna. The kimono look is iconic and it all just works expertly.

A TRUE MOMENT.

So well put! I suppose the comforting thing is knowing that those huge moments that tend to overshadow it are truly deserving of the praise they receive.

The video needs more appreciation though. Me and my friends were watching music videos on YouTube and I put this one - none are particularly Madonna fans but they kind liked the freakiness of the video. Unsurprisingly, my friend who is a Bjork fan enjoyed it.

Just discovered this. Cher is a fan!
