BuzzJack Music Forum _ Eurovision Song Contest _ Eurovision Song Contest 2015 · Semi Final Two

Posted by: Conderella 21st May 2015, 10:57 AM

So it's been almost two days since the last time we had one of these and it's now time for Semi final 2. I have no idea how we used to handle having only ONE show per year. Ridiculous times, I know!

So, unlike Semi 1, Semi 2 is generally more consistent with its highs. The Czech Republic through Sweden part is essentially flawless. However, it also contains some of the contest's worst moments. Namely San Marino, Cyprus, Portugal (although I love the latter). There's more or less a clear divide between the potential qualifiers and ones who are likely to miss out, which makes tonight especially exciting because in a situation like this you think you know what's going to happen but really you don't. And Eurovision Gods do not allow two perfect Semi final results in one year. We already had perfect Semi results back in 2007 so it's enough for one decade.

The show is opened by Lithuania who will briefly feature gay kisses on stage during their performance. I could not think of a better way to start the show really. Semi 1 had police and cuffs and Semi 2 will have a public gay kiss. In Russia, it usually happens the other way round~~ Molly comes right after with a soft classy ballad that hopefully doesn't get overlooked due to its unfortunate draw. San Marino and the horror of the year goes on after Molly. Let's hope they can score 0 points this year. It's been a while since we had a null points entrant. Montenegro goes after San Marino with a Zeljko-penned Balkan uptempo-ish ballad. Lack of Balkan countries in this Semi is worrying but it should at least get to the Final. There Knez can get those 12s from the rest of the Balkan bloc and finish in an okay 17th place. Maltese Amber with an inferior Warrior will go on stage after Knez. Unlikely to qualify in such a strong selection but you never know. Norway comes next with a haunting ballad which is very much expected to advance to the Final on Saturday. Supposedly DOA Portugal is performing in 7th slot. It's one of the more certain DNQs of the year so it'll be shocking if Leonor somehow makes it. Although if Suzy couldn't do it then this bitch definitely has no chance. Czech Republic performs their cliched but classy ballad. Hopefully the power of the voices and duo's chemistry will help the song to not finish bottom 5 and get country's best Eurovision result ever. Nadav from Israel performs right in the middle of the show. His ethnic titshaker is one of the fan favourites this year so everyone who can vote in this Semi needs to do it. It's already weird enough to not have Israel in the Final for 4 years in a row. Continuing this run of amazing entries we have Latvia with a modern slowtempo performed by Aminata. Elnur comes back to Eurovision 7 years later as a solo artist and will be performing his song 11th. Iceland with barefoot Maria Olafs got a not very fortunate draw after Azerbaijan and before Sweden, the current favourite to win the whole thing. After winning Melodifestivalen it was obvious Mans would shoot straight to the top of the bookmakers' to-win lists, which he did. Swiss Melanie Rene performs after Sweden therefore sorry but gurl bahh. Cyprus and one of the supposed fan favourite songs of this year that I am really not getting goes on stage next. He's likely to stand out and qualify so we'll probably see Cyprus' return to the Final after 3 years. Slovenia is also expected to qualify which would mark the first time since the introduction of the Semifinal system that they qualified for the final twice in a row. Poland's Monika is closing the Semifinals this year. This one is also quite a mystery for me personally. Can this performance not be a boring sitting in a wheelchair type plz thanx <3

UK is voting in this Semi Final so, Brits, charge your phones and forget about future phone bills.

So yeah tonight is likely to be fabulous so get ready and we'll meet in Vienna in a mere 8 hours *.*

I'm hoping Latvia and Czech Republic get through but I really don't know if they will (think it will be one or the other, not both qualifying). Everything else I've bolded should get through.

17. Poland Monika Kuszyńska - In The Name Of Love

The pessimistic set-up (with a hint of optimism with Czech qualifying as I think they will now and don't want to be wrong), aside from that, I don't think this could go any worse conceivably, although now I've said that it probably will. Would far rather Poland got swapped for Ireland but the draw will ensure that won't happen.

Wanting:

01. Lithuania Monika Linkytė & Vaidas Baumila - This Time
02. Ireland Molly Sterling - Playing With Numbers

03. San Marino Anita Simoncini & Michele Perniola - Chain Of Lights
04. Montenegro Knez - Adio

05. Malta Amber - Warrior
06. Norway Mřrland & Debrah Scarlett - A Monster Like Me

07. Portugal Leonor Andrade - Há Um Mar Que Nos Separa
08. Czech Republic Marta Jandová & Václav Noid Bárta - Hope Never Dies
09. Israel Nadav Guedj - Golden Boy
10. Latvia Aminata - Love Injected
11. Azerbaijan Elnur Huseynov - Hour Of The Wolf

12. Iceland Maria Olafs - Unbroken

13. Sweden Mĺns Zelmerlöw - Heroes
14. Switzerland Mélanie René - Time To Shine

15. Cyprus John Karayiannis - One Thing I Should Have Done
16. Slovenia Maraaya - Here For You

17. Poland Monika Kuszyńska - In The Name Of Love

That is a very precarious selection of favourites, I can stand to lose perhaps Switzerland (preferably for Lithuania but it'll probably be for Cyprus, and obviously Sweden will take the place of one of these) but any more and I'll feel very crushed. This is the semi where I really WANTED perfect results. C'mon.

Seriously, I'm not even sure how I'm voting. I am planning currently to vote for Czech Republic definitely a couple of times, and then a vote to Norway and Slovenia to help them along, but I also want to vote for all of Azerbaijan/Ireland/Israel/Iceland/Latvia and if I do then it'll kind of be a bit of a waste. So I'll probably just stick to 3 but may chuck a vote to one of these if they do a great performance.

Posted by: *Tim 21st May 2015, 12:13 PM

I'll most likely have to give this a miss cry.gif damned uni work

Posted by: LexC 21st May 2015, 12:19 PM

I'll refrain from making my official predictions until I've heard the performances but at this point I am saying

IN:
Sweden
Norway
Azerbaijan
Slovenia
Lithuania
Cyprus
Latvia
Israel
Poland
Czech Republic

OUT:
Montenegro
Iceland
Ireland
Malta
Switzerland
Portugal
San Marino

All changeable after the performances tonight but I think that is how it'll go.

Omg. That 9-13 section!! *.*

Surely there will be one casualty from that section? sad.gif

Posted by: nickthenoodle 21st May 2015, 02:07 PM

Hope and pray that Israel can make it through!

Posted by: ScottyEm 21st May 2015, 02:33 PM

I think the following will qualify

Ireland (will be saved by the jury and only just)
Montenegro
Malta
Norway
Latvia (it bloody better, given the ever shortening in the odds is a classic sign of a dark horse)
Azerbaijan
Iceland (a lot thinking this will DNQ, but this will comfortably go through)
Sweden
Cyprus
Slovenia

I think Poland and Israel will narrowly miss out. Israel will probably get ruined by the jury vote.

hi.gif

I think I've only heard two of these songs so far. Latvia's is quite good, Sweden's is quite shit. Hoping this semi is less 'dull ballad ad infinitum' than the first ~ (I will actually be watching all of this, my first ever full ESC semi omg)

Posted by: Ryan. 21st May 2015, 03:12 PM

Well the first half of this semi is the worst of the four semi halves, but the second half is the best. The first semi was much more consistent whereas just about all the good ones here are found in the second half. So don't get put off straight away!

Posted by: Cameron 21st May 2015, 03:22 PM

I hope Ireland and Iceland make it through to the final. I can't see Ireland making it but I think Iceland have a good chance

The quality of this semi is much stronger than the other one! It's hard to predict who I think will get through as I think there's 11 that are strong enough to qualify, I think the running order might let Latvia down slightly being sandwiched between two big songs but I hope I can be proved wrong!

On board the 'Serbia got through, surely Israel have a good chance' train. Still expect Iceland to go through in about 9th, something like Switzerland or Poland just isn't strong enough imo to push it out hopefully! And wishing Ireland all the luck.

Posted by: pippa 21st May 2015, 05:09 PM

If Ireland, Sweden and Slovenia go through to the final it would be wonderful. I believe Sweden are extra safe to qualify, Slovenia likely, but Ireland may struggle. I would hope the jury can pull it over the line as it is a beautiful song.

Posted by: Ryan. 21st May 2015, 06:14 PM

I have Slovenia through in my predictions but I feel like I need convincing they are safely going through, I'm thinking back to Feminnem in 2010 performing in the penultimate position (I think) and a fan and bookies favourite. I'm not overly convinced by what I'm reading regarding their staging, I feel like we are due a big shock and this is where its most likely to come from.

Even when Lithuania send a song I'd be happy for them to qualify with I'm still not fully supporting them. And their vocals aren't dominating hugely.

Think their couples thing is going to see them through but it'll be a close run thing, don't think that's quite the strongest performance they could have given.

8.5 - Lithuania

Posted by: Robot 21st May 2015, 07:15 PM

01 Lithuania - That wasn't bad but there's something about it that felt very messy and clunky and their harmonies weren't permanently on point. It was quite pleasant though and knowing what made it from Semi 1, it'd make a welcome finalist. It'd be a great entry if things were sort of... tidied up because it did feel a bit amateur but beneath it, there's a very catchy, fun little ditty there. 7/10

Really not one of my favourites, mainly because of her poor diction and weak voice trying to do more than it is but that's a flashy performance at least, I can see that possibly getting through now.

05 Malta - I feel like this would be so much better on the studio version, there's a great song there that's not being sold to the best of it's ability. I love the production though and it definitely got better as it went along, was a bit flat and dodgy to begin with but it definitely builds to something pretty great. I think she needs a TAD more power in her voice and stage presence to sell what seems like a very powerful song. 7/10

7/10 Malta // Amber - Warrior
7/10 Lithuania // Monika Linkytė & Vaidas Baumila - This Time

Morland looks very comfortable, Debrah not so much, hope she doesn't drag it down.

Norwegian's entry is actually pretty good, this could be a dark horse, hope the track makes it into the final

Posted by: Liаm 21st May 2015, 07:37 PM

Still can't fully get into the song, I think it's better with the video rather than the performance. Debrah's vocals aren't that good and it's a bit dry for minimal staging, it did come alive in the last part though. Still a very good song though and will likely be through.

06 Norway - I suppose it's one of the most interesting entries so far in that they tried to do something different, but not interesting in the fact that the song is actually doing nothing for me. I see the appeal but that sort of thing is just too stripped back for me to properly enjoy. The last chorus elevated it somewhat but I'm still not sold. 5.5/10

Song would be actually quite good if she had a more powerful voice. Which is a real shame, Portugal are overdue another qualifier but this isn't it.

I believe that this performance is what the hip kids would call a "hot mess".

While this oldie calls it bonkers but entertaining.

Posted by: Iz~ 21st May 2015, 07:49 PM

You see why this semi is giving me so many dilemmas. This is exactly what the final is needing and it's a very infectious bop.

Hope he can, that's certainly a very good effort from him, but I remain unsure.

Posted by: J▼hnkm 21st May 2015, 07:49 PM

That song is so irksome. I don't care if we need some uptempo, I don't want shit in the final.

09 Israel - Well, that was some much needed fun! I absolutely love ethno inspired entries and that has REALLY picked up my mood. The whole structure of it is a bit messy from Sing type verses to a Turkey entry in the chorus, so that stops it being OMG AMAZING in my books but that was still a great moment and undoubtedly stands out. 9/10

That singing <3 I had kinda let my love for Latvia fall a bit flat but this is really reawakening it.

I hope it isn't TOO indie for Eurovision, because it's a very enjoyable 3 minutes.

Posted by: Robot 21st May 2015, 07:54 PM

10 Latvia - Okay, I've been one of the main haters for that but it actually made a lot more sense that time round. I prefer it with the final chorus which lasts longer than 5 seconds, as I wish it would during the rest of the song. But I actually really enjoyed that quite surprisingly, especially for something so subtle which really isn't my field of interest in the slightest, let's face it. It does stand out though, especially amongst this semi and its quality.

11 Azerbaijan - I expect better of Azerbaijan because that really didn't do all that much for me. It was a decent attempt at trying to be quite dramatic but it never quite hit the mark it was aiming for in my eyes. Not too bad though. 12 Iceland - Those vocals were so shaky that it kind of spoiled what wasn't such a bad song. I don't like the whole staging of it, she looks way too twee which annoys me. I'd quite like to see it qualify though, a nice enough foot tapper that was ultimately quite enjoyable, her shaky vocals aside. 7/10

good visuals for sweden, and the best Avicii track since the last Avicii single. Fab though, add it to the top 3 tracks, Belguim, Latvia, Sweden, any of them would be good winners...

15 Cyprus - I can't work out how I feel about that. It was actually very different as far as ballads go, because it was very understated. No need for the big power ballad vocals that more often than not seem to fail to make the mark, while that was quite sweet and loveable, from the song to the vocals to the person singing it. It actually really worked. I'm not wowed but I'm a fan! 7.5/10

I'm definitely getting some Super Sonico vibes from her on-stage attire.

Her voice is so objectionable but the song is also undeniable

Yet another one where I can barely hear the vocals, what's going on tonight, it's very strange.

16 Slovenia - I've actually heard that before and forgot and it definitely sounded better on studio version than live, but it didn't help that the production was much louder than her vocals. One of the more credible entries but the staging was pretty awful and her headphone wearing was just bizarre and really distracted from a song that didn't match her attire at all. Rather jarring. A well crafted song though and would've sounded better with better sound mixing. 7.5/10

17 Poland - I mean, if it does get through, really it does smell of sympathy because it was just disgustingly "oh how nice". A very poor finisher, not really sure why it was picked to close at all because it left the semi on a really dour note. 3/10

such ANGER for a pleasant pop song. Obviously they deserve such vitriol for trying to win a song competition for the UK. How very dare they!

Frankly it's better than half the dire ones that got through Tuesday, and it at least tries to be different, which is more than can be said for the vast majority of Eurovision entrants this year.

Probably the least surprising results we've had since I've been following the semis! I would've preferred Czech Republic over Poland but that was never going to happen. Think I might be the sole Cyprus fan on here, I'd much rather have a simple ballad like that than Hungary's 'simple ballad'.

I PREDICTED 10/10 (on my twitter - @LexDANCE_ pls follow for proof) QUALIFIERS CORRECTLY THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE!

Posted by: Iz~ 21st May 2015, 09:08 PM

Switzerland and Czech Republic both gave pretty show-stopping performances, they must have been unlucky to have missed out. The rest are pretty deserved based on tonight's show but for those missing out it must feel terrible. Would certainly say they put in stronger efforts than Lithuania, which is a bit questionable based just on that performance to have qualified.

Honestly, I don't know, if that couldn't qualify I'm not sure what would. Hope you guys can keep trying and entice Slovakia back, if that can happen that'll help matters. But you got everything right this year I'd say, great song, charismatic performers, you must have been close. At least I HOPE.

Well, the Hungarian entry is boring as hell, the one of Cyprus is pure shite, I wouldn't say that it's an easy decision.

Posted by: LexC 21st May 2015, 09:12 PM

I think the Czechs just got let down by context, comig as the latest in a long line of all those ballads meant I think people didn't give them a chance. If they'd sent that song in another year I think they'd have qualified.

Posted by: AdamAloud 21st May 2015, 09:13 PM

Now I'm over my initial *.* over Israel qualifying I can reflect on the rest. Another set of results that have gone SO WELL heart.gif Really pleased Montenegro made it, Zeljko remains sans DNQ. So happy for Latvia as well, it was a great perf from Aminata. Sweden actually fell a little flat compared to the MF version but I still love it of course.

It'll be 'sweet', nice young boy who cleans up well singing a somewhat heartfelt love ballad. I can see the appeal, I don't like the appeal as the song is indeed terminally dull but I can see it.

I feel it reminds me of Within Temptation's 'Whole World Is Watching' but just a tad more downtempo. Mainly because Marta reminds me a lot of those sort of female rock singers that are very prominent in that sort of band. (you can see where my love for it comes from)

But that's probably not what you're looking for. Racking my brains for Muse songs now.

Honestly, I don't know, if that couldn't qualify I'm not sure what would. Hope you guys can keep trying and entice Slovakia back, if that can happen that'll help matters. But you got everything right this year I'd say, great song, charismatic performers, you must have been close. At least I HOPE.

i don't think slovakia will be interested in coming back when we failed to qualify. i think it's very probable that we're not coming back next year and i hope so as there's no place for us unfortunately.

also that's how varakians feel in bjsc i guess, ha
