It's a miracle they've kept someone as fantastic as Shona for so long when she's utilised so little really, I hope they see the praise she's getting right now and give her more storylines going forward.

i could just watch babe for hours.Anette Badland is sublime

Nu Courtney seems like she's going to be like every soap teenager EVER.

Posted by: T Boy 4th August 2016, 08:00 PM

Courtney looks surprisingly younger than her cousin, Louise, who is almost 5 years her junior. I was wondering whether we'd get to see Courtney in all of this but the fact she apparently lives in London is an indicator that she could keep going even after Grant has gone back.

Interestingly, today is the first time Courtney and Sharon have ever shared screen time.

Posted by: Mart!n 4th August 2016, 08:18 PM

Yet to see this, nu Courteney, catches up now

Posted by: burbe 4th August 2016, 09:55 PM

Living in London suggests she'll be sticking around and potentially give another excuse for Grant to pop up in the future again.

I think the person who plays Louise is 18-19 years old for real so that might explain things.

So Grant is gonna be banging Belinda? I don't blame him, she is very attractive.

Posted by: liamk97 5th August 2016, 10:37 PM

Oh ffs, lets not try and recreate Sharongate.

Love how Abi immediately perked up and stopped sobbing when Mick said her job was safe.

I don't think she's my type!

Posted by: T Boy 8th August 2016, 08:40 PM

So the 21 year old secret is finally out the bag. But it feels slightly tacked on without Michelle's presence given how newer viewers have little connection to her as a character. Also I hate that Peggy went to her grave not knowing.

Oh yeah and any fireworks between her and Sharon occurring off screen drama.gif

Posted by: burbe 8th August 2016, 09:59 PM

Agreed. They should have only exploded this secret if Michelle was back on screen. Otherwise, they should have left it!

Posted by: liamk97 9th August 2016, 09:30 AM

Thing is, I don't think there is anything that Sue Tully would return for. There's been some great opportunities for her to make a guest appearance but she's declined them all, so the story just has to be told without her there. I just wish it all made a bit more sense, like why would Michelle decide to write to Peggy and reveal that and why is it a bit hazy as to how much Sharon knew beforehand and after? Her reaction was very muted if she only just found out that Michelle had slept with Grant.

Posted by: T Boy 9th August 2016, 10:55 AM

I don't see why Sharon had to hop on a plane to see Michelle about it especially since she seemingly didn't bring Mark Jnr back with her. We could have had her screaming at Michelle over the phone. Sharon doesn't seem that arsed about her best friend's betrayal. And why hasn't she spoken to Martin yet? I hazily remember he knew the truth and told Pauline before she died.

Posted by: toby 9th August 2016, 06:58 PM

Belinda is everything.

Posted by: liamk97 9th August 2016, 07:01 PM

^I second that.

Nice to see a bit of clarification in regards to the Mark Jnr. backstory tonight. I'm guessing Sharon mention he has a British accent (although I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have any aspect of an American accent) pretty much confirms he will be appearing at some point.

Love how Kathy thought £50 would be a good starting point to return tens of thousands of pounds! laugh.gif

Posted by: toby 9th August 2016, 07:08 PM

Was Kathy always this shit? From what I have seen she could at least act in her last stint. I blame Hollyoaks.

Posted by: T Boy 9th August 2016, 08:52 PM

Kathy's problem is that her reasons for pretending to be dead and abandoning her son are so ridiculous that Gillian Taylforth could be Dame Judi Dench and Kathy would still lack any kind of sincerity when she's pretending to care.

Belinda is absolutely wonderful.

I really enjoyed Jane and Grant's scene. It did emphasise just how farcical the storylining has been the past few years.

I legit thought Phil was going to ring Grant pretending to be Sharon. Looks like Mark will be turning up after all.

Posted by: burbe 9th August 2016, 08:58 PM

Bless Kathy for getting £50 from the cash point!!! laugh.gif

Posted by: liamk97 9th August 2016, 09:02 PM

Tbf, I thought the scene between Kathy and Grant was a sniff of the old Kathy who could be tough talking and not easily intimidated.

Posted by: T Boy 9th August 2016, 09:13 PM

I thought the Kathy scene was the most awkward scene Grant has been in since his return. That dialogue...

Posted by: jase. 10th August 2016, 08:53 PM

Kathy just needs to f*** off. I zone out whenever she's on screen.

Belinda *.* 'Bob the builder?' And Asylum

I could watch endless scenes of Claudette and Babe.

However, I'm tiring of the endless scenes of Phil, hands on table looking out of it, talking to Sharon as she gently slinks in to the opposite chair. Why the f*** does she keep getting up between scenes?

Kudos to the casting of Mark as well. He really does look like he could be the nephew of the original Mark Fowler.

I think I'm a little less surprised tbh. It's been hard to see where this character can actually go next given everything that's happened to them.

Back to Mark, isn't the most telling part of who is his dad is the fact that despite Tim raising him, he's always had his mother's maiden name as his surname? I'd be amazed if he wasn't suss over this at all in 20 years.

Posted by: toby 13th August 2016, 10:37 PM

that article makes it sound like they were axed.

Posted by: T Boy 13th August 2016, 10:40 PM

It takes guts to axe a character like that one. Bit of a gamble.

Posted by: liamk97 13th August 2016, 10:41 PM

I know the character has been a bit lost atm and certainly wasn't as good as they were on their first stint, but I'd have thought they would have stayed. Surely they must have quit and not been axed?

Posted by: T Boy 13th August 2016, 10:45 PM

I dunno, it'd be good to see some big name axings to prove no one is safe. They tend to drop the easy targets when there's a changeover and I'm actually less bothered about this news than I was over some of the other recently announced departures.

Posted by: liamk97 13th August 2016, 10:51 PM

That's true, plus it feels like a long time since a big name character (who was already in the show on a regular basis, so not Peggy) had an exit and this one has potential to be great (or in equal measure be a flop like Carla's in Corrie).

Posted by: Froot. 13th August 2016, 10:51 PM

Not that I've watched the show regularly in a looong time but I'm gutted at that news as Ronnie has always been one of my favourite characters and I think Sam plays it so well. It's definitely a shock to axe them and potentially kill them off as I feel like it is suggesting! I would feel like it would be a waste if so!

Noooooooo cry.gif I feared this would happen because they aren't really taking her character anywhere atm.

BABE AND CLAUDETTE THO

Posted by: burbe 15th August 2016, 07:58 PM

We have finally found a spiritual successor who dunnit to Who Stole Dot's Cold Cuts?!!!!!! *.* Who shoved Babe in the freezer?!

I'm guessing it was Sylvie or Ollie getting an early start as the latest criminal mastermind of Walford.

Posted by: liamk97 15th August 2016, 08:07 PM

I'm guessing either Sylvie or Les, since they wouldn't have it in them to physically hurt Babe and spontaneously pushing the walk-in freezer (what do you even call those?) door shut seems like the extent of malicious intent.

Abi would have battered her, dusted herself off, walked towards the freezer door, looked back and say "things die" before strutting off, whereas Claudette's boobs would have knocked Babe out stone cold before she even reached the freezer door.

Yep, I think Sylvie tbh. Abi might have battered her (perhaps like a fish, being in the iamspamspamami but I'd like to think she'd go for the apple bobbing technique she used against Lauren and I'm amazed Claudette's boobs haven't killed anyone yet. As for Les, I'm not sure I can see it.

Living for whoever was blasting LAS KETCHUP through the market tho.

Also surprised Dot didn't confuse Claudette with Grace Olumbumni who she made friends with for an episode before we never saw her again.

I don't think it her. I think Babe is just jealous because the Carter family were being so welcoming to Sylvie and saying "she could come whenever she wanted".

I can't cope at Mick and Linda's nonchalant reaction to Babe blackmailing thousands of pounds out of Les and Pam for months on end.

Posted by: T Boy 17th August 2016, 09:17 PM

Mick and Linda have been extremely poorly written of late. Both Lee and Babe should be being treated like black sheep but everything is forgiven in a second just so that the Carters can remain a 'strong family unit'. I mean, seriously, Nancy got more grief for less.

Posted by: liamk97 17th August 2016, 09:20 PM

I do generally love the Carter family and I think Mick and Linda unusually work fantastically as a couple but I have to agree that some of the things they do and their reactions to things leave A LOT to be desired. I know it sounds like a broken record to say that "the current producer's own work isn't yet on screen; he's just playing out DTC's plans" but I do hope he can give them some good direction and make them feel as realistic as they did throughout 2014.

Posted by: T Boy 17th August 2016, 09:24 PM

I agree, I like them as characters but it almost comes off if late as if they have to stick together no matter what has happened and literally the only exception this year was Mick freezing Nancy out which led to her exit. The only one that annoys me character/acting wise is Johnny but that's because this actor is SHOCKING.

I know laugh.gif Poor Nancy!

Posted by: liamk97 17th August 2016, 09:38 PM

Absolutely, and unfortunately that seems to be something most Eastenders families go through at some point. I can see there being a cut down on the family; we know Buster is leaving, Babe surely has a sell-by-date, Tina screams being at risk of getting axed - it may still leave the main body of the Carter family intact but might be enough to give them the new sense of direction they need.

I've said before that nu Johnny's woodness was strangely endearing and gave a sense of the awkwardness of old Johnny's character, but it's been a few months now and he still hasn't settled into the role at all. He needs to go, I honestly can't bare him being on screen.

Posted by: burbe 17th August 2016, 09:39 PM

I agree about Johnny. He's such an awful actor! Almost on Kamil levels of cringe...

Posted by: T Boy 18th August 2016, 09:17 PM

Omg at it being Abi rotf.gif

I wonder if she will kill Babe eventually, I do feel Babe has a shelf life. Mick and Linda not telling her to pay the Cokers back tho...

And as amusing as it is to see Abi get fired and rehired on a daily basis, why is it the a job in the Vic iamspamspamamiis such a big deal to her? Isn't she also supposed to be working at a vets?

Posted by: Liаm 18th August 2016, 09:28 PM

The problem I feel there is that I've always wanted Roxy to break free of her sisters control. Perhaps they're just too iconic as the 'Mitchell sisters'.

Posted by: liamk97 19th August 2016, 08:58 AM

That's true. I suppose I'm holding out for an exit that suggests they'd go back or try to go back to how they were when they first came to the show, where both knew what the word "fun" meant and Ronnie genuinely protected Roxy rather than control her as such.

Posted by: T Boy 19th August 2016, 09:33 PM

My goodness, I haven't seen Ronnie played that well in years.

Posted by: toby 19th August 2016, 09:35 PM

Aside from the amazingness from Shirley and Linda Kathy for once didnt seem like an absolute flop.

Posted by: T Boy 19th August 2016, 09:36 PM

I've got a funny feeling Deano is coming back towards the end of the year.

Posted by: JosephSpears 19th August 2016, 09:45 PM

That was such a superbly executed episode. Kellie, Sam, Rita and Linda all played their parts to perfection, I loved their scenes together.

Posted by: HarryEzra 19th August 2016, 10:21 PM

That was an incredible episode from start to finish. Of course the four ladies mentioned all did amazing jobs as portraying their characters in this storyline but even Gillian did amazing in this ep wub.gif

Posted by: liamk97 19th August 2016, 10:56 PM

Loved that scene where the jury was dubbed over the scenes of Ronnie, Shirley, Roxy and Linda. Really moving and unexpected, which made it all the more touching. The scene where Linda had a flashback when cleaning the table was chilling. In fact, all four women were fantastic. Linda Henry was exceptional and Sam Womack remembered how to put effort into acting.

Can't believe he got off! I mean, it's realistic and it's kinda important to show that honesty but soaps always deliver justice in some way or another.

I was thinking similar actually, perhaps this could tie into Ronnie and Roxy's exits? Like I said above, it would seem strange if no justice of any sort was given to Dean.

Next character for the chop is Lee Carter.

Not as devastating this one. I thought he had potential to begin with but it hasn't been utilised and I'll be thankful if Whitney finally dumps him after the MESS that the resolution was a few weeks back. Although leaving the Carters with just Johnny is wacko.gif

Usually there is a death around Christmas/ New Year... reckon Deano will get a month contract to kill the character off, gets bumped off by Roxy and Ronnie and they both go on the run, taking the kids with them

No sad loss with Lee Carter bit wet behind the ears, never liked him to be honest, I can see Dot going early next year, apparently she is beginning to frail a bit health wise, it be sad to see her go, one of the longest characters in EE and probably Whitney if Rob comes back for a short stint since Lee is going I can't see her staying any longer, who is she going to hang out with... the Carters.

Surely Max is due back soon, he did wanted to take a year out. I also think a new family will be introduced if the culling continues.

Found this on YouTube today which shows the moment Pauline found out about Grant being Mark Junior's dad (be aware that this comes from the period the producers turned Pauline into a bitter, spiteful person). Just nice to have some evidence to support people's memory of who was aware of this secret.

Posted by: toby 21st August 2016, 10:07 PM

god Pauline was dreadful.

Posted by: T Boy 22nd August 2016, 09:44 AM

Thanks for that Liam! Was only dipping in and out back then so I couldn't remember.

Pauline became awfully bitter but given her 20 year history, everything that happened and her general personality, it was quite in character for her to be so bitter. And she was against Sonia of all people, I feel we can all relate. The most out of character thing she did was fake an illness.

So glad they recasted Martin tho. James Alexandriou was pretty shit.

Posted by: T Boy 22nd August 2016, 10:18 PM

I live for Sonia's hypocrisy 'it's my relationship and my life, Martin, nothing to do with you!'

That's funny. I must have imagined her sticking her beak into Martin and Stacey's relationship since day one.

It's alright! I was watching at the time but was just far too young to pick up on that. I'm sure I saw someone refer to there being a scene before she died where Martin told her about Mark's paternity but I didn't realise they meant in the same week she died.

Oh yeah, Sonia has delivered some great lines just for the sheer irony and oblivion. Tonight's was one of the best.

Does anyone else find it weird how Ronnie & Roxy barely interact with Phil these days? A few years ago they were couldn't leave each other alone. I especially miss Phil & Ronnie's scenes together. I was hoping we'd see Grant interact with them for the first time but nothing! Not very believable since Ronnie was supposed to have lived with Grant & Peggy during her brief break in 2014.

Posted by: T Boy 23rd August 2016, 08:19 PM

I would hope we would see Grant with Ronnie and Roxy when he's back in a couple of weeks but then it wouldn't surprise if it didn't happen at all.

Sonia is still killing me. She invited the whole of Tina's family around to her cramped living room so that they could ignore her, scoff their faces and she doesn't even attempt to broach the subject of why she'd asked them all round in the first place! And how irresponsible of all of them to leave an Alzheimer's sufferer alone with a school girl. I know Bex is pretty grown up but it's almost as ludicrous as when all the Beales left Louie alone in the house with Jane who couldn't walk!

Posted by: liamk97 23rd August 2016, 08:24 PM

I don't think we're supposed to remember Ronnie's stay in Portugal. I'm sure it was insinuated that Ronnie hadn't seen Richard since he was a baby despite Sam too living in Portugal and I remember that scene with Peggy back in 2014, just before Sharon and Phil's wedding, where Peggy told her she always rose a glass to Pat, even though Ronnie would have already known that considering she'd already spent several months living there.

Kenneth?! We're built up this picture of this romantic guy Sylvie had this great fling with, and he was called Kenneth?

Posted by: liamk97 25th August 2016, 10:18 PM

Oh yes, I feel like the attention to detail with Sylvie's character has been excellent. I'll always remember the scene near to when she first came into the show and she got lost and confused in the market, which was really powerful even though I've not had any personal connection with the condition (p.s. don't think I was taking the piss from that Kenneth thing, I just hate that name!)

this being a DTC story was fully expecting her say his name was Gavin or something.

but why would a 20 year old hang out with 14 year olds? laugh.gif Not to sound ageist or anything lmao

Posted by: liamk97 1st September 2016, 06:08 PM

It does seem odd, especially with how flirty Mark is being (I get that's just the way he is in general but you think he'd be able to switch off the charm in front of clearly quite impressionable 14 year olds). I suppose it kinda makes sense for Mark to hang out with Shakil and then in turn be around 14 year olds, because it also kinda makes sense for 14 and 16 year olds to hang out. Tbf, I've not found it seems weird when watching on screen because I always assume Mark/Courtney are slightly younger than they are and Louise/Bex are slightly older.

Posted by: T Boy 1st September 2016, 06:08 PM

Why on Earth did the writers believe Shakil's 16th birthday should be an episode long event? That was awful.

And why on Earth is Mark so worried about going bald with that thick mane of hair? It's pretty obvious he's taking after his mum's side of the family in that regard but it's just so 'ooooh Grant's bald as well lol tease'.

And why did Mark get alcohol from the Vic, instead of some off licence? Are they running out of ways to shoehorn in Danny Dyer's contractual appearances?

It was rather uncharacteristic of Sonia not to be there, sticking her beak in tbh.

And WD Bex and Shakil for being older virgins than Martin and Sonia were parents.

Posted by: liamk97 1st September 2016, 09:42 PM

The younger cast are generally decent characters themselves but everything is just so forced when they're a group. We've already touched on the fact their ages range from 14-20 which is pushing the bounds of realism, but then there's the things they say and the way they act. A bad Hollyoaks plot describes the whole thing perfectly. I like that the producers are trying to show the younger characters socialising because that's something that has been missing for a while (and even longer when you consider the last time it was done well) but they've just got the whole thing wrong.

I'm assuming the younger cast are all friends off-screen so maybe it would be best to record how they act with each other and use that to help things on-screen?

I did enjoy the scene with Shakil and Martin though; that felt like Eastenders as it was character-driven, realistic and how two people in their positions would act.

Oh and this Mark Jnr stuff is so contrived.

Posted by: liamk97 6th September 2016, 10:24 PM

I hope something interesting happens regarding Jay (excluding him dying) because if tonight was the climax of the kidnap drama then my god that was underwhelming. Do you remember the days Eastenders were good at big drama? (and good aftermaths too but that seemed to disappear even longer ago).

Again, the Kim and Denise scenes were so good. Kim is great at the comedy but she also excels at these types of scenes too.

Posted by: pippa 8th September 2016, 03:55 PM

EastEnders and big drama, i miss those days too, i miss the days when they really pulled of great conclusions to storylines. Sometimes i find the conclusion to recent storylines very disappointing or sometimes confusing. The Claudette storyline where she was buried and in general the Hobbards storylines seems to be all over the place and we never get a full understanding of the storyline, is any else finding this with the storylines.

Ronnie's stalker storyline also had a real non impact ending. Storylines need conclusions and good endings so i would hope the new producer improves on this aspect of the show.

I'm not like Dot. I wouldn't go to Sonia's wedding. It doesn't matter if she's marrying a woman or a man, I wouldn't want to spend any time with Sonia ever.

Posted by: Bonquiqui 9th September 2016, 09:40 PM

I was dreading them but the Dot and Lord Cashman scenes where actually lovely.

Posted by: liamk97 9th September 2016, 10:33 PM

I'm actually quite glad the Mark/Grant storyline didn't develop further than it did. There's not really any point if Ross isn't committed to the show and Susan Tully is literally never ever going to return. Ever. Maybe it could be picked up again when someone has a clear direction of where they want to take the story.

Posted by: T Boy 10th September 2016, 09:00 AM

They blatantly knew they only had Ross back on Barbara's orders and there's a good chance he'll never be back and so panicked and decided this secret needed revealing no matter what. Not having Michelle made the whole thing ridiculous and most of the fall out fell flat. Sharon's reaction happened completely off screen.

Posted by: liamk97 10th September 2016, 09:40 AM

I'm half feeling it was the new producer's idea to cut the story short and DTC would have taken it further.

I'd like to know what happened to Jay, because one moment he is hiding from a policeman and the next he's at home after just getting out the shower.

Posted by: Bonquiqui 10th September 2016, 03:26 PM

K, this is what the new producer really needs to do'

Have Claudette explain how she dug herself out of her grave.
Have Claudette dominate the show for a few months.
Give Donna a good storyline.
Bring in a new family.
Rest the Carters for a bit.
Give Shirley something to do away from her family.
Make Denise the new Leading Lady.
Axe Sonia and Jack.

Do that and we MAY have a good 2017

Posted by: T Boy 10th September 2016, 05:07 PM

Hopefully there will only be a couple more episodes of Sonia and then she'll be absent for about a year.

Claudette to murder someone with her boobs at Christmas.

Posted by: Liаm 10th September 2016, 05:19 PM

I definitely agree about the Grant/Mark/Michelle thing, it was Michelle's absence that was really detracting from it but there of course was no way that Susan would return so they couldn't get around that. It wasn't just that though, every little "storyline" he was in felt forced and like it was just their goal to rinse as much screen time out of him as possible. Flat is definitely the word, even when he was gonna get with his sister their reaction was just like "oh" :/

Posted by: T Boy 10th September 2016, 06:07 PM

His 2006 return was much more natural because you can tell the schedule wasn't planned around him back then. They didn't even have him take the one opportunity to interact with Ronnie or Roxy.

It was quite hilarious to hear Ronnie rant 'Grant this! Family that!' like the second coming of Peggy and yet she doesn't even get to *see* Grant. She literally only had the word of other characters that he was even there...

Posted by: burbe 10th September 2016, 06:49 PM

Hopefully Sonia "does a Cora"...speaking of which apparently she is coming back just not anytime soon laugh.gif

Posted by: T Boy 10th September 2016, 06:51 PM

Cora was good in her day, but that day has gone.

Posted by: liamk97 11th September 2016, 11:33 AM

Grant's return has proved that legend characters should probably remain in the past once they've left, unless there's plans to develop them and/or they are the sort of character that can be rested for a few years then brought back (like Janine or Sharon).

Posted by: T Boy 11th September 2016, 06:05 PM

If Grant had done a 2 month guest stint that was uninterrupted, it would have been ok. Or if there's been planning. Phil owes him money? Dropped in seconds. Still in love with Sharon? Forgotten after one line.

Posted by: Cameron 11th September 2016, 07:00 PM

I was thinking earlier, do you think the Denise being pregnant thing will have something to do with her wanting an abortion but a whole dramatic thing is made of the fact she was against Libby doing it earlier this year?

Posted by: T Boy 11th September 2016, 07:06 PM

It's been quite clear that Denise has been searching for purpose this year. She was eager to help Jordan and that went wrong. She thought she would raise JJ and couldn't. Libby aborted her grandchild. She would definitely be torn by whether to keep the baby to give her life more purpose or abort it because it's Phil's. But if she did the latter, she'd be a hypocrite for the way she treated Libby.

Posted by: liamk97 11th September 2016, 10:00 PM

Soaps tend to shy away from long running storylines where a character changes in such a way, like when Cindy Jnr had an underage pregnancy and the producers bailed on showing the effects of young motherhood by axing the story after a few weeks, or when characters suffer severe injuries/are paralysed and are fit and ready a month later, so I don't know whether they'll actually have Denise keep the baby. It sounds like too much perseverance for a soap.

Posted by: Liаm 11th September 2016, 10:18 PM

She'll probably want an abortion, realise she shouldn't because of Libby and have a miscarriage or something like that.

Posted by: T Boy 12th September 2016, 05:28 PM

I really want her to birth a Mitchell tho.

And the parallels it will draw with Mark jr. And Diane Parish won't f*** off and never return to acting so they can play it out better. If anything this storyline protects Denise from the axe.

It's very frustrating how no one has pulled any of the other Carters up on their neglect of Sylvie. I'd almost be on Sonia's side if she wasn't Sonia.

Posted by: liamk97 12th September 2016, 10:36 PM

Tbf this has been coming ever since March, at least now this gives good opportunity to have something really spectacular like we should have had ages ago.

At least Janine is back... kink.gif

Posted by: T Boy 13th September 2016, 06:42 PM

She's literally one of the best characters going but it was obvious this was going to happen. Characters like that have a shelf life (Babe's days could be numbered) and those awesome episodes in March came to nothing with that terribly messy follow up.

At least it won't be like with Grace Olubumni.

Posted by: pippa 13th September 2016, 07:21 PM

I wont miss Claudette too much, her character has just gone nowhere. I would say her character is written very badly as her storylines just dont add up alot of the time. I feel the exact same about Vincent and Donna to a lesser extent.

EastEnders needs a brand new family right now and a well thought out family. I would love a family to come into the show and make the impact the Slaters did when they arrived. I think the addition of the Slaters was handled superbly.

He's done nothing since his initial arrival storyline, so not surprised by this! Surely the new producer must be preparing to introduce new characters with all of these leaving. The cast is going to be looking a bit small soon!

Posted by: T Boy 14th September 2016, 09:26 PM

Unfortunately due to literally no development, it now seems that character was brought in for nothing more than a box ticking exercise. It really feels like DTC had no idea what he was doing post 30th anniversary.

Posted by: T Boy 18th September 2016, 10:41 AM

Unfortunately, she couldn't last forever either.

At this rate, we'll need a Janine return sharpish.

Posted by: liamk97 18th September 2016, 10:45 AM

I wonder if a reduced cast improves quality (obviously not solely that factor alone) - I seem to recall whoever took over in ~1998 axed lots of characters (to the point he was called the Axe King or something like that by tabloids) and, by 2000, the show was in one of its "golden eras".

Posted by: T Boy 18th September 2016, 11:01 AM

Apart from Ronnie and Roxy all of the current axings have been pretty obvious ones, the kind that would fall under any producer. I wonder if he has the guts to axe some of the other spare parts like Jack or Billy or like asking Sonia to never return.

Posted by: HarryEzra 18th September 2016, 12:28 PM

Wow this culling is brutal laugh.gif

Posted by: burbe 18th September 2016, 08:17 PM

Who does everyone think will be next? I think Jack, Tina and Sylvie are potentially at threat of the axe. I could see June Brown retiring by the end of next year too, maybe even this year. Other than that, I think the rest can stay. Donna could potentially be axed but I think she'll be safe because she still has a lot of potential.

Posted by: Cameron 18th September 2016, 08:21 PM

I can't see Tina/Sylvie being there much longer. I can also see a possible shock Louise exit. Oh and the man bun child

Posted by: Bonquiqui 18th September 2016, 08:23 PM

they literally cant axe anyone else. theres about 12 people left

Posted by: JosephStyles 18th September 2016, 08:25 PM

Surely there aren't many more axes left? I think Tina, Shakil and Donna are probably most at risk at this point and honestly none of them would be particularly big losses.

Posted by: Bonquiqui 18th September 2016, 08:28 PM

Donna's look of utter disgust when she found out Claudette was shagging Patrick was amazing.

Posted by: T Boy 18th September 2016, 08:29 PM

Tina could be likely unless they bring Zsa Zsa back. Donna also but she's too awesome and hasn't been written into a corner yet.

I don't think Louise will go. If anything, there's a chance they could bring Lisa back.

Posted by: burbe 18th September 2016, 09:09 PM

I think another two axes would be doable but anymore than that would be too much unless they're bringing in a new family or having some characters return!

Is that both Buster and Masood gone? If so I shall miss both if only for the missed opportunities. I feel Buster had much more to give than what he had and could have survived outside of the Carters. Masood has been great and they just should have brought Zainab back.

Why did Linda take so long to demand Babe pay the money back? And why is Linda forcing this and not Mick?

Mick really has become a detestable character. He forgives Babe for all kinds of evil and yet Buster needs to stay and suck it up whilst Shirley ignores him.

And Kathy is so laughable. Comparing moving to the next town with Buster to making her sons believe she was dead for 10 years!

Posted by: Mack 24th September 2016, 06:34 PM

Buster had a lot more to give I felt.

Posted by: burbe 24th September 2016, 07:21 PM

It's a shame Masood didn't get the duff duff. After his length of time on the show, you'd expect a little more for his send off. I will miss Masood and especially his friendship with Denise. His scenes with Denise were my favourite yesterday.

Posted by: liamk97 24th September 2016, 11:01 PM

Yeah, the actor confirmed on Twitter that wasn't his last episode. Surely 9 years on the show earns a Julia's Theme?

Posted by: Bonquiqui 24th September 2016, 11:24 PM

tbh Masood was only any good when Zainab was around. as a stand alone character he's always been shit

Posted by: liamk97 24th September 2016, 11:33 PM

I don't think I've ever properly been that interested in Masood. He's a good supporting character and all, but I certainly don't feel sad he's leaving.

Posted by: T Boy 25th September 2016, 08:49 AM

Hes decent enough but without Zainab or the kids there's little point. All his love interests post Zainab were half hearted. Jane, Carol and what the Hell was supposed to be happening between him and Carmel?

Posted by: liamk97 25th September 2016, 09:37 AM

I thought him and Carol together was quite cute actually and I definitely still sided with him after David's return. You're quite right that, after Zainab left, everything has been half-hearted, despite a few initial attempts to make him interesting again (like Bad Masood when DTC took over).

Posted by: Mart!n 25th September 2016, 10:32 AM

I shall miss Masood, I thought he would get together with Carmel, Buster had potential, but where would he fit in without the Carters, he hardly mixes with anyone else on the set apart from Kathy.

Posted by: T Boy 25th September 2016, 12:18 PM

Sam has been on autopilot since she came back and Rita has been saddled with one of the worst characters in Eastenders history

Posted by: T Boy 25th September 2016, 07:38 PM

My take

I think it's foolish to kill them both. I sort of get it with Ronnie. She's run her course as a character and she's literally gotten away with murder thus far. It would be a shame for her to die now she's finally a proper mum but the writers really dropped the ball there because Matthew is constantly being looked after by a near 90 year old woman despite his mother not even having a job.

Roxy seems wrong though. Why leave poor Any without a mother and Roxy's crimes do not match up to her sister's.

Either way I expect it won't have much effect on Jack and that within the hour he will be boning Honey.

Busters exit was extremely boring, they could have done so much more than that for the exit.

Im happy Ronnie is going as i havnt enjoyed her for a long time now, Roxy i can take or leave but i dont think either will be missed too much as they have run their course.

Posted by: burbe 25th September 2016, 09:10 PM

The problem with Ronnie is that they're really inconsistent with the writing, so it's no surprise Sam Womack doesn't want to put the effort. When the material is there, she delivers - i.e. the scenes during the rape trial verdict. I feel they're also quite inconsistent with Stacey too. Ronnie & Stacey were the centre of the show in the 2007-11 era and although both have had some good moments (particularly Stacey) since their return, they're both a long way from their original stints.

Roxy only ever felt like a supporting character for Ronnie and has mostly come into her own when away from Ronnie (during her break and the Dean storyline).

Given the way they've written I don't think she's salvageable now (as much as it saddens me to say) and the rumoured death would be a fitting ending as most of her story arc has been about being the tragic heroine. Plus it allows her to finally get her comeuppance for the killings of Carl and Fatboy. Roxy on the other hand is surprising to hear about! I think they would be better to go down the route of her being too distraught to stick around and leaving with Amy.

Ridiculous decision. They make the show.

Kim today! laugh.gif

Posted by: Mikee1981 27th September 2016, 08:06 AM

For the first time in a long time I felt lost with the show last night.

I felt as if I had missed an episode, gone from Masoods leaving party to not even being in the episode, to Kims sudden obsession with driving when she been using the bus recently, going with Denise to the scan on the bus, surely if going to start some storyline they could of had her in car parking wrong. And no real fall out or discovery of Buster leaving , he'd just gone and Shirley automatically knew and seemed to of moved straight on.

I quite enjoyed DTC's run on the show, there was stuff I didnt agree with but overall was pretty good but I'm not sure Sean O'connor going to keep me interested already axed majority of characters that I liked and felt had more to give, I'm interested to see where he goes I know he doesnt like sensationalism but if we got BinGate and BlueBadgeGate as our exciting storylines of things to come then I'm not looking forward to the future.

Posted by: liamk97 27th September 2016, 10:32 AM

I agree about it feeling like an episode was skipped, particularly with Masood not appearing but with the suggestion that he was gone (when Stacey said his house was now empty). I'm guessing he returns for some reason before properly leaving.

I don't think we need to prepare ourselves for storylines on bins and other Lorraine Newman-esque matters, I think that was just an attempt at bringing in realism to the show. It also feels like these recent episodes have been much more character focused which is important before injecting a storyline into the mix. I'd take these sort of filler episodes over other rubbish we're usually subjected to, because at least we see the characters actually being NICE to each other, which makes them people you care about and actually root for when a storyline is put into the mix. That's what has made the most iconic storylines so memorable and successful: we actually cared about the characters and were eager to see what happened to them in the aftermath, not just where the story would take us.

I really liked the fact the duff duff ended on a happy Martin and Stacey embrace. The end of the show doesn't have to be a cliffhanger every time, because that would only, and has only, dampened the impact of a killer duff duff. It felt quite old school Eastenders, where duff duffs were put at the end of a natural scene rather than a scene that was only put in so that you'd tune in next time, only for whatever it was to be concluded in the first five minutes of the succeeding episode.

Posted by: Bonq 27th September 2016, 12:32 PM

Back when it started the duff duff was hardly ever dramatic. My mum told one episode ended with Pauline putting the bins out*.*

Kim is SLAYING me in this driving storyline. Pearl is brilliant as well, already got so much attitude.

I'm all for these character driven storylines. As good as DTC could be, I don't want anymore Gavin-sequel stories.

I think it'll be Honey! She's likeable, has good morals (unlike most of the characters) and is very entertaining. She's crying out for a meaty storyline to put her at the centre of the show.

Queen Honey (the nicest character in ANY soap EVER) for landlady plz.

Posted by: liamk97 28th September 2016, 09:30 PM

It would be great if someone as lovely and genuine as Honey could be the main female of the show, but I feel it would be more likely for Belinda to take that role.

I'm glad the new producer is developing characters again. Only once we care about the characters can the more meaty storylines happen.

'Are you saying that what Ben did, killing Heather Trott, was my fault?'

Yes, you complete vacuum of common sense, Ben mightn't have done it if he didn't think his so called loving mother was dead and you were actually there to support him in his troubles instead of being chased around a massive house by weird Gavin holding a lighter for fifteen years.

GIVE WHITNEY A DAMN BREAK sad.gif

Posted by: liamk97 10th October 2016, 09:12 PM

The comedy and heartache was well balanced tonight. I always found counteracting comedy during the DTC period to be quite forced but it wasn't the case tonight (and it was usually the Carters supplying the light relief so it was nice to see them at the centre of the grit). Kim's expressions when she was acting interested in Denise's book was hilarious and I was genuinely laughing, yet I could be really feel for Whitney during her scenes in the hospital.

Posted by: T Boy 10th October 2016, 09:21 PM

You can tell DTC has gone since Mick didn't have a hissy fit in the hospital because the doctors couldn't Magic the baby back to life.

Eastenders is really quite terrible at the moment. I don't like the direction it's going in under the new producer. I'm all for character-driven plots and small intimate moments between characters but driving lessons and bins?? I hope this is the fluff they thought of very quickly to bridge the gap between executive producers and there's much better stuff coming.

I don't like how the new producer hasn't done interviews or given any indication of what type of show he's going to create. I'm not saying he needs to go down the DTC route of proclaiming this will be the best era of EastEnders since it started, but some hints about what he's planning might be nice.

Posted by: liamk97 24th October 2016, 10:30 PM

I thought the actor did the best with what he was working with but, as I was watching, I kinda just realised I don't give a shit about his character! laugh.gif

Posted by: Toby G 24th October 2016, 11:03 PM

I'll start giving a shit about him when he starts taking his shirt off

Posted by: Cameron 25th October 2016, 07:09 PM

Bex looked so much like Lauren tonight, it was scary.

I feel EE are forgetting Louise is meant to be like 14 laugh.gif

Posted by: T Boy 25th October 2016, 08:31 PM

Living for Bex shunning modern music and spending the day listening to the KOOKS of all things.

Also love Claudette being a general boss around the square.

I burst out laughing Shakil pulled his trousers down! laugh.gif

Posted by: T Boy 25th October 2016, 08:41 PM

At least Sonia wasn't in the episode.

Posted by: Blurbe Witch 25th October 2016, 08:47 PM

I can't get used to the new duff duffs. It felt so unnatural having the episode end mid conversation.

Posted by: jase. 25th October 2016, 09:51 PM

The new duffs are still HIGHLY amusing me laugh.gif

Posted by: Blurbe Witch 27th October 2016, 08:50 PM

Kim and her road rage! I love it! I could just watch a whole episode of her yelling at people laugh.gif

Posted by: T Boy 27th October 2016, 09:11 PM

Bex JAMMING to Scouting For Girls tonight.

I'll admit, it's not exactly Dot rocking out to Greenday tho.

Tiffany singing Firestarter tho

Is it necessary to remind us of Tyler Moon in 2016?

Laughable that Jack has no friends.

Didn't Jack only just jet off on holiday with Ronnie and Amy a couple of episodes back?

Dot cry.gif She's stealing every show atm!

Posted by: T Boy 31st October 2016, 09:52 PM

Claudette's boobs really outdid themselves tonight.

When Dot said she wanted a cup of tea, I was willing Mrs Doyle to burst into the room.

It's been ages since Dot had a good storyline, why has it taken the, so long to use her appropriately again?

Posted by: T Boy 1st November 2016, 09:47 PM

Gonna miss Claudette. Yet another character not quite used to her full potential and her legacy will be that bizarre Mother's Day week that had almost zero follow up.

Posted by: ¡Michael Myers! 1st November 2016, 09:51 PM

As Dot is awful and just rambles on about her god.

They need to bring back Tiffany full time! She's grown so much though, it's kinda weird ohmy.gif

I was wetting myself at Linda telling Lady Di she was a naughty girl laugh.gif

Posted by: T Boy 3rd November 2016, 10:25 PM

I would keep Morgan and Tiff in exchange for the brutal murder of Johnny tbh.

Charlie's trying to distance herself from Janine so it doesn't look like she'll be back sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

Posted by: liamk97 4th November 2016, 12:14 AM

She'll be back one day I'm sure. She's probably one of the few characters who'd be able to make a successful return to the show (unlike someone like Grant who I think should be left in the past now) and I don't think has ever been spoiled by bad writing or ran out of steam (she seems to be in the show for the correct length of time before leaving).

Was nice to see Tiff and Morgan back. Tiff has obviously grown up a lot but she looked younger and more like Tiff tonight than she has done in the "omg you won't believe what Tiff from Eastenders looks like now" articles). Morgan also has really grown up, like it's hard to imagine it's just been two years since he was last in the show.

We have another brief but out-there return soon for Derek Harkinson (Who? Pauline's gay best mate. Still don't know?) http://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/eastenders/news/a813070/dads-army-star-ian-lavender-returning-to-eastenders-as-derek-harkinson/

I'd definitely like to see Tiffany back full time, was a breath of fresh air in tonight's episode - although I'm not sure who her age group is. I'm assuming she's (a lot) older than Denny/William now but younger than Bex/Louise?

EDIT: Seems Denny is 10, William is 9 while Tiffany is 14, Bex is 16 (of course) and Louise is 15. I guess Tiffany could hang around with Bex and Louise, there could be a storyline where the older girls force Tiffany to do things she doesn't want to do somehow - maybe do a alternative version of Bethany's storyline in Corrie.

Anyhow yes I'd like to see Tiffany back, and deary me Johnny is the worst actor in EastEnders by FAR. He's giving Sarah Harding a run for her money.

So weird and pointless...though funnily enough I thought about this character yesterday as I saw the actor on something else.

I'm guessing he'll be part of the Christmas show based on him being involved in something that "involves the majority of the cast" and it's also 10 years since Pauline died this Christmas so he could be back to mark that occasion.
